Emergent integrable dynamics in a non-integrable Rydberg-atom chain

We show that integrable and non-integrable dynamics can coexist in the same Rydberg-atom chain, depending on the initial state in which the system is prepared. In the setting we consider, Rydberg atoms mainly experience an effective dipolar interaction and, within the nearest-neighbor approximation, their dynamics can be mapped onto an effective integrable Fermi gas with ballistic transport. The inclusion of longer-range couplings, however, is essential for the theory to be predictive; those terms break the conservation laws associated with integrability, enabling, in particular, the emergence of genuine diffusive transport. We study the dynamics generated by a bipartition protocol and reveal a sharp qualitative change in behavior as the particle density is varied, suggesting the possibility of accessing weaker and stronger integrability breaking dynamics in the same Hamiltonian depending on the relevance of local interactions. We propose a theoretical mechanism that accounts for the differences. Our findings provide clear and concrete evidence that integrability breaking is not solely a property of the Hamiltonian and of the magnitude of the couplings that break integrability, but also of the state in which the system is prepared.

Fate of a Fractional Chern Insulator under Nonlocal Interactions in Synthetic Dimensions

Synthetic dimensions provide a powerful route to engineer topological lattice models in ultracold atomic systems, but they contain intrinsic nonlocal interactions along the synthetic direction. We investigate an extended Harper-Hofstadter model subject to infinite-range column interactions that mimic this synthetic nonlocality. By tuning this interaction strength, we demonstrate an adiabatic evolution from a Laughlin-type bosonic fractional Chern insulator to a charge-ordered Tao-Thouless-like state without closing the many-body gap. Along this path, the many-body Chern number and the topological entanglement entropy remain unchanged, despite a pronounced restructuring of the entanglement spectrum and the loss of robustness against local perturbations. This adiabatic connectivity establishes a controlled bridge between topologically ordered and effect- ively one-dimensional charge-ordered regimes, opening potential new avenues for state preparation. Our results also show that conventional topological markers may fail to diagnose the breakdown of locality-protected topological order in synthetic dimensions, and identify nonlocal interactions as a powerful knob to coherently interpolate between distinct many-body regimes.

Universal properties of the many-body Lanczos algorithm at finite size

We study the universal properties of the Lanczos algorithm applied to finite-size many-body quantum systems. Focusing on autocorrelation functions of local operators and on their infinite-time behaviour at finite size, we conjecture that in the large $n$ limit, the ratios between consecutive Lanczos coefficients should have specific scalings with the size of the lattice that we make precise and that depend on the hydrodynamic tail of the autocorrelation function. The scaling associated with strong or approximate zero-modes is also discussed. We support our conjecture with a numerical study of different models.

Observing weakly broken conservation laws in a dipolar Rydberg quantum spin chain

Integrable quantum many-body systems host families of extensive conservation laws, some of which are fragile: even infinitesimal perturbations can qualitatively alter their dynamical constraints. Here we show that this fragility leaves a clear experimental fingerprint in a one-dimensional quantum spin chain of as few as 14 Rydberg atoms. Weak integrability breaking from interatomic dipolar couplings is directly detectable within experimentally accessible times in the dynamics of non-local observables. In particular, magnetization fluctuations are highly sensitive to the breaking of fragile conservation laws and exhibit anomalous growth, which we observe experimentally; similar signatures appear in a semilocal string observable. Numerical simulations on substantially longer chains and a simplified classical stochastic model reproduce those features. We establish non-local observables as a sensitive probe of fragile conservation laws in quantum spin chains and Rydberg-atom arrays as a platform to test perturbative descriptions of quantum many-body dynamics with weak integrability breaking.

Open quantum spin chains with non-reciprocity: a theoretical approach based on the time-dependent generalized Gibbs ensemble

We study an open quantum spin chain with non-reciprocal dissipation using a theoretical approach known as time-dependent generalized Gibbs ensemble. In the regime of weak dissipation the system is fully characterized by its rapidity distribution and we derive a closed set of coupled differential equations governing their time evolution. We check the accuracy of this theory by benchmarking the results against numerical simulations. Using this framework we are able to compute both the magnetization density and current dynamics, identifying some relations between the two. The problem of the anomalous power-law exponents identified in a previous work is discussed. Our work constitutes a theoretical approach that is able to describe the physics of non-reciprocal open quantum spin chains beyond analyses based on non-interacting fermions.

Transport in a System with a Tower of Quantum Many-Body Scars

We report the observation of unconventional transport phenomena in a spin-1 model that supports a tower of quantum many-body scars, and we discuss their properties uncovering their peculiar nature. In quantum many-body systems, the late-time dynamics of local observables are typically governed by conserved operators with local densities, such as energy and magnetization. In the model under investigation, however, there is an additional dynamical symmetry restricted to the subspace of the Hilbert space spanned by the quantum many-body scars. The latter significantly slows the decay of autocorrelation functions of certain coherent states of quantum many-body scars and is responsible for the unconventional form of transport that we detect numerically. We show that excited states with energy close to that of the quantum many-body scars play a crucial role in sustaining the transport. Finally, we propose a generalized eigenstate thermalization hypothesis to describe specific properties of states with energy close to the scars.

$\mathrm{SU}(3)$ Fermi-Hubbard gas with three-body losses: symmetries and dark states

We study an $\mathrm{SU}(3)$ invariant Fermi-Hubbard gas undergoing on-site three-body losses. The model presents eight independent strong symmetries preventing the complete depletion of the gas. By making use of a basis of semi-standard Young tableaux states, we reveal the presence of a rich phenomenology of stationary states. We classify the latter according to the irreducible representation of $\mathrm{SU}(3)$ to which they belong. We finally discuss the presence of three-particle stationary states that are not protected by the $\mathrm{SU}(3)$ symmetry.

Spin fractionalization at the edge of quantum Hall fluids induced by bulk quasiparticles

We define a measurable spin for the edge of a lowest Landau level and incompressible fractional quantum Hall state in the presence of an Abelian or non-Abelian bulk quasiparticle. We show that this quantity takes a fractional value inherited from the fractional spin of the bulk quasiparticle. We present a geometric picture that does not rely on global symmetries of the wavefunction but is able to treat quasiparticles and edges with different shapes. We study finite-size many-body wavefunctions on the cylinder with circular quasiparticles and straight edges. Our results are supported by matrix-product-state calculations for the Laughlin and the k=3 Read-Rezayi states.

Ergodicity and hydrodynamics: from quantum to classical spin systems

We show that in classical spin systems the precise nature of the late-time hydrodynamic tails of the autocorrelation functions of a generic observable is determined by (i) the dynamical critical exponent and (ii) the equilibrium thermodynamic properties of the corresponding observable. We provide numerical results for one- and two-dimensional systems and present theoretical considerations that only rely on the notion of ergodicity. Our result extends to the classical framework the relaxation-overlap inequality, first introduced in Capizzi et al. Phys. Rev. X 15, 011059 (2025)] for quantum many-body systems satisfying the eigenstate thermalization hypothesis.

Exceptional stationary state in a dephasing many-body open quantum system

We study a dephasing many-body open quantum system that hosts, together with the infinite-temperature state, another additional stationary state. The latter is exceptional in many respects, as it is pure and retains memory of the initial condition, whereas any orthogonal state evolves towards the infinite-temperature state erasing any information on the initial state. We discuss the approach to stationarity of the model focusing in particular on the fate of interfaces between the two states; a simple classical model based on a membrane picture helps developing an effective hydrodynamic theory even if the dynamics does not feature any conserved quantity. The fact that the model reaches stationary properties on timescales that depend on the system size while the asymptotic decay rate is finite is duly highlighted. We point out the reasons for considering these exceptional stationary states as quantum many-body scars in the open system framework.

Dynamics of the Bose-Hubbard Model Induced by On-Site or Long-Range Two-Body Losses

We present a theoretical study of the dissipative dynamics of the Bose-Hubbard model induced by on-site or long-range two-body losses. We first consider the one-dimensional chain and the two-dimensional square lattice, and study the dynamics induced by the sudden switch-on of two-body losses on a weakly-interacting superfluid state. The time-dependent density is obtained in the spirit of the Bogolyubov approach by calculating theoretically the equations of motion associated to the relevant quadratic bosonic correlators. In the one-dimensional case, our results compare very well with quasi-exact numerical calculations based on the quantum jump method implemented using tensor networks. We find that the intermediate-time dynamics of the density displays an algebraic decay characterized by an interaction-dependent power-law exponent. The latter property still holds for long-range two-body loss processes but it is absent in the two-dimensional square lattice with on-site losses.

Many-Body Open Quantum Systems

These Lecture Notes discuss the recent theoretical advances in the understanding of open quantum many-body physics in platforms where both dissipative and coherent processes can be tuned and controlled to a high degree. We start by reviewing the theoretical frameworks and methods used to describe and tackle open quantum many-body systems. We then discuss the use of dissipative processes to engineer many-body stationary states with desired properties and the emergence of dissipative phase transitions arising out of the competition between coherent evolution and dissipation. We review the dynamics of open quantum many body systems in the presence of correlated many-body dissipative processes, such as heating and many-body losses. Finally we provide a different perspective on open quantum many-body systems by looking at stochastic quantum trajectories, relevant for the case in which the environment represents a monitoring device, and the associated measurement-induced phase transitions.

Space-time first-order correlations of an open Bose-Hubbard model with incoherent pump and loss

We investigate the correlation properties in the steady state of driven-dissipative interacting bosonic systems in the quantum regime, as for example non-linear photonic cavities. Specifically, we consider the Bose-Hubbard model on a periodic chain and with spatially homogeneous one-body loss and pump within the Markovian approximation. The steady state is non-thermal and is formally equivalent to an infinite-temperature state with finite chemical potential set by the dissipative parameters. While there is no effect of interactions on the steady state, we observe a nontrivial behaviour of the space-time two-point correlation function, obtained by exact diagonalisation. In particular, we find that the decay width of the propagator is not only renormalised at increasing interactions, as it is the case of a single non-linear resonator, but also at increasing hopping strength. Furthermore, we numerically predict at large interactions a plateau value of the decay rate which goes beyond perturbative results in the interaction strength. We then compute the full spectral function, finding that it contains both a dispersive free-particle like dispersion at low energy and a doublon branch at energy corresponding to the on-site interactions. We compare with the corresponding calculation for the ground state of a closed quantum system and show that the driven-dissipative nature -- determining both the steady state and the dynamical evolution -- changes the low-lying part of the spectrum, where noticeably, the dispersion is quadratic instead of linear at small wavevectors. Finally, we compare to a high temperature grand-canonical equilibrium state and show the difference with respect to the open system stemming from the additional degree of freedom of the dissipation that allows one to vary the width of the dispersion lines.

Hydrodynamics and the eigenstate thermalization hypothesis

The eigenstate thermalization hypothesis (ETH) describes the properties of diagonal and off-diagonal matrix elements of local operators in the eigenenergy basis. In this work, we propose a relation between (i) the singular behaviour of the off-diagonal part of ETH at small energy differences, and (ii) the smooth profile of the diagonal part of ETH as a function of the energy density. We establish this connection from the decay of the autocorrelation functions of local operators, which is constrained by the presence of local conserved quantities whose evolution is described by hydrodynamics. We corroborate our predictions with numerical simulations of two non-integrable spin-1 Ising models, one diffusive and one super-diffusive, which we perform using dynamical quantum typicality up to 18 spins.

Energy-filtered quantum states and the emergence of non-local correlations

Energy-filtered quantum states are promising candidates for efficiently simulating thermal states. We explore a protocol designed to transition a product state into an eigenstate located in the middle of the spectrum; this is achieved by gradually reducing its energy variance, which allows us to comprehensively understand the crossover phenomenon and the subsequent convergence towards thermal behavior. We introduce and discuss three energy-filtering regimes (short, medium and long), and we interpret them as stages of thermalization. We show that the properties of the filtered states are locally indistinguishable from those of time-averaged density matrices, routinely employed in the theory of thermalization. On the other hand, unexpected non-local quantum correlations are generated in the medium regimes and are witnessed by the Rényi entanglement entropies of subsystems, which we compute via replica methods. Specifically, two-point correlation functions break cluster decomposition and the entanglement entropy of large regions scales as the logarithm of the volume during the medium filter time.

Quantum nonlinear optics on the edge of a few-particle fractional quantum Hall fluid in a small lattice

We study the quantum dynamics in response to time-dependent external potentials of the edge modes of a small fractional quantum Hall fluid composed of few particles on a lattice in a bosonic Laughlin-like state at filling ν = 1/2. We show that the nonlinear chiral Luttinger liquid theory provides a quantitatively accurate description even for the small lattices that are available in state-of-the-art experiments, away from the continuum limit. Experimentally-accessible data related to the quantized value of the bulk transverse Hall conductivity are identified both in the linear and the non-linear response to an external excitation. The strong nonlinearity induced by the open boundaries is responsible for sizable quantum blockade effects, leading to the generation of nonclassical states of the edge modes.

Loss induced collective mode in one-dimensional Bose gases

We show that two-body losses induce a collective excitation in a harmonically trapped one-dimensional Bose gas, even in the absence of a quench in the trap or any other external perturbation. Focusing on the dissipatively fermionized regime, we perform an exact mode expansion of the rapidity distribution function and characterize the emergence of the collective motion. We find clear coherent oscillations in the widths of the gas both in position and rapidity space as well as in the phase space quadrupole mode of the gas. We compare this motion to that of the well known breathing mode in the absence of losses and find that they differ in the motion of the density profile. We also discuss the role of losses in the collective motion of the gas following various other protocols, such as the removal of losses after a finite hold time, and when the harmonic trap is also quenched.

Breakdown of Linear Spin-Wave Theory in a Non-Hermitian Quantum Spin Chain

We present the spin-wave theory of the excitation spectrum and quench dynamics of the non-Hermitian transverse-field Ising model. The complex excitation spectrum is obtained for a generic hypercubic lattice using the linear approximation of the Holstein-Primakoff transformation together with the complex bosonic Bogolyubov transformation. In the one-dimensional case, our result compares very well with the exact quasiparticle dispersion relation obtained via a fermionic representation of the problem, at least in the regime of large dissipation and transverse field. When applied to the quench dynamics we show however that the linear spin-wave approximation breaks down and the bosonic theory is plagued by a divergence at finite times. We understand the origin of this instability using a single mode approximation. While limited to short times, we show that this approach allows us to characterize the dynamics arising from the quench of the dissipative term and the structure of the Lieb-Robinson light-cone of the propagation quantum correlations. Furthermore, for the one-dimensional case, the linear spin-wave dynamics shows good agreement with the exact fermionic solution, both for the local magnetization and the spin-spin correlations.
