Ballistic transport and boundary resistances in inhomogeneous quantum spin chains

Transport phenomena are central to physics, and transport in the many-body and fully-quantum regime is attracting an increasing amount of attention. It has been recently revealed that some quantum spin chains support ballistic transport of excitations at all energies. However, when joining two semi-infinite ballistic parts, such as the XX and XXZ spin-1/2 models, our understanding suddenly becomes less established. Employing a matrix-product-state ansatz of the wavefunction, we study the relaxation dynamics in this latter case. Here we show that it takes place inside a light cone, within which two qualitatively different regions coexist: an inner one with a strong tendency towards thermalization, and an outer one supporting ballistic transport. We comment on the possibility that even at infinite time the system supports stationary currents and displays a non-zero Kapitza boundary resistance. Our study paves the way to the analysis of the interplay between transport, integrability, and local defects.

Anyonic tight-binding models of parafermions and of fractionalized fermions

Parafermions are emergent quasi-particles which generalize Majorana fermions and possess intriguing anyonic properties. The theoretical investigation of effective models hosting them is gaining considerable importance in view of present-day condensed-matter realizations where they have been predicted to appear. Here we study the simplest number-conserving model of particle-like Fock parafermions, namely a one-dimensional tight-binding model. By means of numerical simulations based on exact diagonalization and on the density-matrix renormalization group, we prove that this quadratic model is nonintegrable and displays bound states in the spectrum, due to its peculiar anyonic properties. Moreover, we discuss its many-body physics, characterizing anyonic correlation functions and discussing the underlying Luttinger-liquid theory at low energies. In the case when Fock parafermions behave as fractionalized fermions, we are able to unveil interesting similarities with two counter-propagating edge modes of two neighboring Laughlin states at filling 1/3.

4$π$ and 8$π$ dual Josephson effects induced by symmetry defects

In topological insulator edges, the duality between the Zeeman field orientation and the proximitized superconducting phase has been recently exploited to predict a magneto-Josephson effect with a 4$π$ periodicity. We revisit this latter Josephson effect in the light of this duality and show that the same 4$π$ quantum anomaly occurs when bridging two spinless Thouless pumps to a p-wave superconducting region that could be as small as a single and experimentally-relevant superconducting quantum dot - a point-like defect. This interpretation as a dual Josephson effect never requires the presence of Majorana modes but rather builds on the topological properties of adiabatic quantum pumps with Z topological invariants. It allows for the systematic construction of dual Josephson effects of arbitrary periodicity, such as 4$π$ and 8$π$, by using point-like defects whose symmetry differs from that of the pump, dubbed symmetry defects. Although adiabatic quantum pumps are typically discussed via mappings to two-dimensional geometries, we show that this phenomenology does not have any counterpart in conventional two-dimensional systems.

Non-topological parafermions in a one-dimensional fermionic model with even multiplet pairing

We discuss a one-dimensional fermionic model with a generalized $\mathbb{Z}_{N}$ even multiplet pairing extending Kitaev $\mathbb{Z}_{2}$ chain. The system shares many features with models believed to host localized edge parafermions, the most prominent being a similar bosonized Hamiltonian and a $\mathbb{Z}_{N}$ symmetry enforcing an $N$-fold degenerate ground state robust to certain disorder. Interestingly, we show that the system supports a pair of parafermions but they are non-local instead of being boundary operators. As a result, the degeneracy of the ground state is only partly topological and coexists with spontaneous symmetry breaking by a (two-particle) pairing field. Each symmetry-breaking sector is shown to possess a pair of Majorana edge modes encoding the topological twofold degeneracy. Surrounded by two band insulators, the model exhibits for $N=4$ the dual of an $8 π$ fractional Josephson effect highlighting the presence of parafermions.

Braiding Majorana zero modes using quantum dots

We discuss a network of Kitaev wires coupled to several individually-tunable quantum dots as an extension of the recent experiments on a quantum dot coupled to a nanowire hosting Majorana zero modes [Deng et al. Science 354 1557 (2016) and Deng et al. arXiv:1712.03536 (2017)]. The setup features localized Majorana modes with exact zero energy and we show that they can be manipulated by solely acting on the quantum dots. A braiding process can be obtained by arranging three wires as a trijunction and a charge readout of the quantum dots can be used to reveal the non-Abelian statistics of Majorana zero modes. The setup can be scaled up to serve the more advanced purposes of topological quantum computation.

Energy transport in an integrable parafermionic chain via generalized hydrodynamics

We study energy transport in the integrable $\mathbb Z_3$ parafermionic chain using the partitioning protocol. By exploiting the Bethe-ansatz solution for the thermodynamics of the system, we develop a generalized hydrodynamic description of the non-equilibrium steady states, which we benchmark using numerical simulations based on matrix product states. The model features a low-energy conformal limit with central charge $c=4/5$, which affects the low-temperature energy current, as we explicitly show. Moreover, we exploit that, for energies close to the maximally excited state, the system is also critical and described by a conformal field theory with $c=1$. By considering the two halves prepared at two temperatures both low in value but opposite in sign, we are able to investigate in an exact and controlled way the junction between two conformal field theories with different central charges. Notwithstanding the absence of global conformal invariance, we find results that approximate to a high degree those of out-of-equilibrium conformal field theories. Our study extends the generalized hydrodynamics to a novel framework, where it can be profitably used for exploring new physical phenomena.

Spin-gap spectroscopy in a bosonic flux ladder

Ultracold bosonic atoms trapped in a two-leg ladder pierced by a magnetic field provide a minimal and quasi-one-dimensional instance to study the interplay between orbital magnetism and interactions. Using time-dependent matrix-product-states simulations, we investigate the properties of the so-called "Meissner" and "vortex" phases which appear in such system, focusing on experimentally accessible observables. We discuss how to experimentally monitor the phase transition, and show that the response to a modulation of the density imbalance between the two legs of the ladder is qualitatively different in the two phases. We argue that this technique can be used as a tool for many-body spectroscopy, allowing to quantitatively measure the spin gap in the Meissner phase. We finally discuss its experimental implementation

Laughlin-like states in bosonic and fermionic atomic synthetic ladders

The combination of interactions and static gauge fields plays a pivotal role in our understanding of strongly-correlated quantum matter. Cold atomic gases endowed with a synthetic dimension are emerging as an ideal platform to experimentally address this interplay in quasi-one-dimensional systems. A fundamental question is whether these setups can give access to pristine two-dimensional phenomena, such as the fractional quantum Hall effect, and how. We show that unambiguous signatures of bosonic and fermionic Laughlin-like states can be observed and characterized in synthetic ladders. We theoretically diagnose these Laughlin-like states focusing on the chiral current flowing in the ladder, on the central charge of the low-energy theory, and on the properties of the entanglement entropy. Remarkably, Laughlin-like states are separated from conventional liquids by Lifschitz-type transitions, characterized by sharp discontinuities in the current profiles, which we address using extensive simulations based on matrix-product states. Our work provides a qualitative and quantitative guideline towards the observability and understanding of strongly-correlated states of matter in synthetic ladders. In particular, we unveil how state-of-the-art experimental settings constitute an ideal starting point to progressively tackle two-dimensional strongly interacting systems from a ladder viewpoint, opening a new perspective for the observation of non-Abelian states of matter.

Topological phases of parafermions: a model with exactly-solvable ground states

Parafermions are emergent excitations that generalize Majorana fermions and can also realize topological order. In this paper we present a non-trivial and quasi-exactly-solvable model for a chain of parafermions in a topological phase. We compute and characterize the ground-state wave-functions, which are matrix-product states and have a particularly elegant interpretation in terms of Fock parafermions, reflecting the factorized nature of the ground states. Using these wavefunctions, we demonstrate analytically several signatures of topological order. Our study provides a starting point for the non-approximate study of topological one-dimensional parafermionic chains with spatial-inversion and time-reversal symmetry in the absence of strong edge modes.

Cluster mean-field approach to the steady-state phase diagram of dissipative spin systems

We show that short-range correlations have a dramatic impact on the steady-state phase diagram of quantum driven-dissipative systems. This effect, never observed in equilibrium, follows from the fact that ordering in the steady state is of dynamical origin, and is established only at very long times, whereas in thermodynamic equilibrium it arises from the properties of the (free) energy. To this end, by combining the cluster methods extensively used in equilibrium phase transitions to quantum trajectories and tensor-network techniques, we extend them to nonequilibrium phase transitions in dissipative many-body systems. We analyze in detail a model of spin-1=2 on a lattice interacting through an XYZ Hamiltonian, each of them coupled to an independent environment that induces incoherent spin flips. In the steady-state phase diagram derived from our cluster approach, the location of the phase boundaries and even its topology radically change, introducing reentrance of the paramagnetic phase as compared to the single-site mean field where correlations are neglected. Furthermore, a stability analysis of the cluster mean field indicates a susceptibility towards a possible incommensurate ordering, not present if short-range correlations are ignored.

Topological fractional pumping with alkaline-earth(-like) ultracold atoms

Alkaline-earth(-like) ultracold atoms, trapped in optical lattices and in the presence of an external gauge field, can stabilise Mott insulating phases characterised by density and magnetic order. We show that this property can be used to realise a topological fractional pump. Our analysis is based on a many-body adiabatic expansion and on time-dependent matrix-product-states numerical simulations. We characterise the pumping protocol by including both finite-size and non-adiabatic corrections. For a specific form of atom-atom interaction, we present an exactly-solvable model of a fractional pump. Finally, the numerical simulations allow us to thoroughly study a realistic setup amenable of an experimental realisation.

Destruction of string order after a quantum quench

We investigate the evolution of string order in a spin-1 chain following a quantum quench. After initializing the chain in the Affleck-Kennedy-Lieb-Tasaki state, we analyze in detail how string order evolves as a function of time at different length scales. The Hamiltonian after the quench is chosen either to preserve or to suddenly break the symmetry which ensures the presence of string order. Depending on which of these two situations arises, string order is either preserved or lost even at infinitesimal times in the thermodynamic limit. The fact that non-local order may be abruptly destroyed, what we call string-order melting, makes it qualitatively different from typical order parameters in the manner of Landau. This situation is thoroughly characterized by means of numerical simulations based on matrix product states algorithms and analytical studies based on a short-time expansion for several simplified models.

Quantum memories with zero-energy Majorana modes and experimental constraints

In this work we address the problem of realizing a reliable quantum memory based on zero-energy Majorana modes in the presence of experimental constraints on the operations aimed at recovering the information. In particular, we characterize the best recovery operation acting only on the zero-energy Majorana modes and the memory fidelity that can be therewith achieved. In order to understand the effect of such restriction, we discuss two examples of noise models acting on the topological system and compare the amount of information that can be recovered by accessing either the whole system, or the zero-modes only, with particular attention to the scaling with the size of the system and the energy gap. We explicitly discuss the case of a thermal bosonic environment inducing a parity-preserving Markovian dynamics in which the introduced memory fidelity decays exponentially in time, independent from system size, thus showing the impossibility to retrieve the information by acting on the zero-modes only. We argue, however, that even in the presence of experimental limitations, the Hamiltonian gap is still beneficial to the storage of information.

Energy transport between two integrable spin chains

We study the energy transport in a system of two half-infinite XXZ chains initially kept separated at different temperatures, and later connected and let free to evolve unitarily. By changing independently the parameters of the two halves, we highlight, through bosonisation and time-dependent matrix-product-state simulations, the different contributions of low-lying bosonic modes and of fermionic quasi-particles to the energy transport. In the simulations we also observe that the energy current reaches a finite value which only slowly decays to zero. The general pictures that emerges is the following. Since integrability is only locally broken in this model, a pre-equilibration behaviour may appear. In particular, when the sound velocities of the bosonic modes of the two halves match, the low-temperature energy current is almost stationary and described by a formula with a non-universal prefactor interpreted as a transmission coefficient. Thermalisation, characterized by the absence of any energy flow, occurs only on longer time-scales which are not accessible with our numerics.

Dissipative topological superconductors in number-conserving systems

We discuss the dissipative preparation of p-wave superconductors in number-conserving one-dimensional fermionic systems. We focus on two setups: the first one entails a single wire coupled to a bath, whereas in the second one the environment is connected to a two-leg ladder. Both settings lead to stationary states which feature the bulk properties of a p-wave superconductor, identified in this number-conserving setting through the long-distance behavior of the proper p-wave correlations. The two schemes differ in the fact that the steady state of the single wire is not characterized by topological order, whereas the two-leg ladder hosts Majorana zero modes, which are decoupled from damping and exponentially localized at the edges. Our analytical results are complemented by an extensive numerical study of the steady-state properties, of the asymptotic decay rate and of the robustness of the protocols.

Synthetic gauge fields in synthetic dimensions: Interactions and chiral edge modes

Synthetic ladders realized with one-dimensional alkaline-earth(-like) fermionic gases and subject to a gauge field represent a promising environment for the investigation of quantum Hall physics with ultracold atoms. Using density-matrix renormalization group calculations, we study how the quantum Hall-like chiral edge currents are affected by repulsive atom-atom interactions. We relate the properties of such currents to the asymmetry of the spin resolved momentum distribution function, a quantity which is easily addressable in state-of-art experiments. We show that repulsive interactions significantly stabilize the quantum Hall-like helical region and enhance the chiral currents. Our numerical simulations are performed for atoms with two and three internal spin states.

Methods for detecting charge fractionalization and winding numbers in an interacting fermionic ladder

We consider a spin-1/2 fermionic ladder with spin-orbit coupling and a perpendicular magnetic field, which shares important similarities with topological superconducting wires. We fully characterize the symmetry-protected topological phase of this ladder through the identification of fractionalized edge modes and non-trivial spin winding numbers. We propose an experimental scheme to engineer such a ladder system with cold atoms in optical lattices, and we present two protocols that can be used to extract the topological signatures from density and momentum-distribution measurements. We then consider the presence of interactions and discuss the effects of a contact on-site repulsion on the topological phase. We find that such interactions could enhance the extension of the topological phase in certain parameters regimes.

Localized Majorana-like modes in a number conserving setting: An exactly solvable model

In this letter we present, in a number conserving framework, a model of interacting fermions in a two-wire geometry supporting non-local zero-energy Majorana-like edge excitations. The model has an exactly solvable line, on varying the density of fermions, described by a topologically non-trivial ground state wave-function. Away from the exactly solvable line we study the system by means of the numerical density matrix renormalization group. We characterize its topological properties through the explicit calculation of a degenerate entanglement spectrum and of the braiding operators which are exponentially localized at the edges. Furthermore, we establish the presence of a gap in its single particle spectrum while the Hamiltonian is gapless, and compute the correlations between the edge modes as well as the superfluid correlations. The topological phase covers a sizeable portion of the phase diagram, the solvable line being one of its boundaries.
