Efficient Adaptation of Deep Neural Networks for Semantic Segmentation in Space Applications

In recent years, the application of Deep Learning techniques has shown remarkable success in various computer vision tasks, paving the way for their deployment in extraterrestrial exploration. Transfer learning has emerged as a powerful strategy for addressing the scarcity of labeled data in these novel environments. This paper represents one of the first efforts in evaluating the feasibility of employing adapters toward efficient transfer learning for rock segmentation in extraterrestrial landscapes, mainly focusing on lunar and martian terrains. Our work suggests that the use of adapters, strategically integrated into a pre-trained backbone model, can be successful in reducing both bandwidth and memory requirements for the target extraterrestrial device. In this study, we considered two memory-saving strategies: layer fusion (to reduce to zero the inference overhead) and an ``adapter ranking'' (to also reduce the transmission cost). Finally, we evaluate these results in terms of task performance, memory, and computation on embedded devices, evidencing trade-offs that open the road to more research in the field.

Machine Learning for Mini-EUSO Telescope Data Analysis

Neural networks as well as other methods of machine learning (ML) are known to be highly efficient in different classification tasks, including classification of images and videos. Mini- EUSO is a wide-field-of-view imaging telescope that operates onboard the International Space Station since 2019 collecting data on miscellaneous processes that take place in the atmosphere of Earth in the UV range. Here we briefly present our results on the development of ML-based approaches for recognition and classification of track-like signals in the Mini-EUSO data, among them meteors, space debris and signals the light curves and kinematics of which are similar to those expected from extensive air showers generated by ultra-high-energy cosmic rays. We show that even simple neural networks demonstrate impressive performance in solving these tasks.

A sensitivity study of VBS and diboson WW to dimension-6 EFT operators at the LHC

We present a parton-level study of electro-weak production of vector-boson pairs at the Large Hadron Collider, establishing the sensitivity to a set of dimension-six operators in the Standard Model Effective Field Theory (SMEFT). Different final states are statistically combined, and we discuss how the orthogonality and interdependence of different analyses must be considered to obtain the most stringent constraints. The main novelties of our study are the inclusion of SMEFT effects in non-resonant diagrams and in irreducible QCD backgrounds, and an exhaustive template analysis of optimal observables for each operator and process considered. We also assess for the first time the sensitivity of vector-boson-scattering searches in semileptonic final states.
