Haag Duality in the Thermal Sector

We prove that the net of localised von Neumann algebras associated with a real scalar field propagating on Minkowski spacetime, in the KMS representation, satisfies a generalised version of Haag duality. Our proof combines ideas from existing arguments for the ground-state representation with purification techniques.

Integral representations of $f$-divergences for general von Neumann algebras

We define and analyze hockeystick divergences and $f$-divergences for normal positive functionals on general von Neumann algebras, generalizing and unifying previous work in classical probability and finite-dimensional von Neumann algebras. All the main properties of these state distinguishability measures (including in particular monotonicity, convexity, semicontinuity, bounds, state discrimination, data processing inequality) are derived from properties of the Jordan decomposition of selfadjoint normal functionals. This is done by representing the $f$-divergences as integrals over hockeystick divergences, and their significance in quantum hypothesis testing is reviewed. The $f_0$-divergence given by the information function $f_0(t) = t \ln t$ is shown to coincide with Araki's relative entropy, extending results of Frenkel to general von Neumann algebras.

A UV-Finite Ryu-Takayanagi Relation from Relative Entropy in AdS$_3$/CFT$_2$

We establish a Ryu-Takayanagi (RT) relation in AdS$_3$/CFT$_2$ using \emph{relative entropy} as the central object, in place of the ultraviolet-divergent von Neumann entanglement entropy. Adapting Hollands' exact result for the chiral relative entropy to a diamond region, we express the boundary relative entropy between the vacuum and a coherent state as a Schwarzian functional, which the Fefferman-Graham dictionary identifies with the asymptotic data of a Bañados geometry; the rigidity of three-dimensional gravity promotes this boundary identification to the bulk. To linear order in the metric perturbation, the relative entropy then equals the variation of the RT geodesic length divided by $4G_N$. The construction rests only on the Bisognano-Wichmann/Borchers theorem and the holographic dictionary, giving a UV-finite, operator-algebraic counterpart to the RT relation.

Bounding relative entropy for non-unitary excitations in quantum field theory

We show how one can use the convexity of non-commutative $L^p$ norms to bound the relative entropy between a faithful state on a von Neumann algebra and an arbitrary excitation thereof. Our results hold for general von Neumann algebras, including the local algebras of type III that are ubiquitous in quantum field theory, and do not require knowledge of the relative modular operator. As an application of our results, we prove that for the chiral current on a light ray, the relative entropy between the vacuum and a dense set of single-particle states is uniformly bounded.

Quantum $L^p$ inequalities in thermal states

In thermal quantum field theory, the global Liouvillian (the generator of time translations) is passive. How is this reflected in the properties of its local density, a quantum field? We propose that the locally averaged density is bounded below, but not above, with respect to the noncommutative $L^4$ norm. This is analogous to the known quantum energy inequalities in the vacuum situation. Our examples include thermal equilibrium on Minkowski space, and the Unruh effect on the Rindler wedge, both for the real scalar free field.

Petz-Rényi relative entropy in QFT from modular theory

We consider the generalization of the Araki-Uhlmann formula for relative entropy to Petz-Rényi relative entropy. We compute this entropy for a free scalar field in the Minkowski wedge between the vacuum and a coherent state, as well as for the free chiral current in a thermal state. In contrast to the relative entropy which in these cases only depends on the sympletic form and thus reduces to the classical entropy of a wave packet, the Petz-Rényi relative entropy also depends on the symmetric part of the two-point function and is thus genuinely quantum. We also consider the relation with standard subspaces, where we define the Rényi entropy of a vector and show that it admits an upper bound given by the entropy of the vector.

Secular growths and their relation to equilibrium states in perturbative QFT

In the perturbative treatment of interacting quantum field theories, if the interaction Lagrangian changes adiabatically in a finite interval of time, secular growths may appear in the truncated perturbative series also when the interaction Lagrangian density is returned to be constant. If this happens, the perturbative approach does not furnish reliable results in the evaluation of scattering amplitudes or expectation values. In this paper we show that these effects can be avoided for adiabatically switched-on interactions, if the spatial support of the interaction is compact and if the background state is suitably chosen. We start considering equilibrium background states and show that, when thermalisation occurs (interaction Lagrangian of spatial compact support), secular effects are avoided. Furthermore, no secular effects pop up if the limit where the Lagrangian is supported everywhere in space is taken after thermalisation (large time limit), in contrast to the reversed order. This result is generalized showing that if the interaction Lagrangian is spatially compact, secular growths are avoided for generic background states which are only invariant under time translation and to states whose explicit dependence of time is not too strong. Finally, as an application, the presented theorems are used to study a complex scalar and a Dirac field, on a background KMS state, in a classical external electromagnetic potential and the contribution to the two point-function given by a generic loop diagram arising from a second order perturbative expansion.
