A distant brown dwarf coplanar to a warm Jupiter and a hot super-Earth

In transiting planetary systems, in which planetary sizes are accurately determined from transit observations, the presence of transit-timing variations (TTVs), especially when combined with radial velocity (RV) data, provides powerful constraints on masses and orbital eccentricities. Together, these measurements offer crucial insights into system architecture, formation mechanisms and dynamical evolution. We present long-term RV and transit/TTV monitoring of the relatively young star (age approximately 1 Gyr) TOI-201, revealing an exceptional multi-planet system composed of a hot super-Earth (SE) size planet transiting every 5.8 days, a warm Jupiter (WJ) on a 53-day orbit and an eccentric (e = 0.62) low-mass brown dwarf (BD) on an approximately 8-year orbit, with an estimated mass of about 16 Jupiter masses. The BD is the longest-period transiting substellar object ever characterized by means of RVs and the only one known to be coplanar with inner planets. The architecture of this system suggests that the SE was formed isolated and in the innermost region of the gaseous disk. On the other hand, the orbital configuration of the outer companions suggests a nearly in situ formation of both objects, with the WJ forming in a dense inner disk. Alternatively, the BD might have formed farther out and migrated inward, while increasing its eccentricity owing to interactions with the disk.

TIC65910228b: A single-transit discovery of a massive long-period warm Jupiter with TESS

Context. Warm Jupiters are excellent case studies for the investigation of giant planet internal structures and formation theories. However, the sample of long-period transiting giants is still small today for a better understanding of this population. Aims. Starting from a single transit found in the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) data, we confirm the planetary nature of the signal and measure its orbital parameters, mass, and radius. We put this system in the context of long-period giant transiting planets and analyzed the viability to sustain atmospheric or dynamical follow-up. Methods. We carried out a spectroscopic follow-up using FEROS and PLATOSpec to obtain precise radial velocities. We added a photometric follow-up with HATPI and Observatoire Moana to obtain a more precise estimate of the orbital period. We derived the orbital and physical parameters through a joint analysis of this data. Results. We report the discovery and characterization of TIC65910228b, a transiting warm Jupiter with a mass of $4.554 \pm 0.255$ $M_J$ and a radius of $1.088 \pm 0.061$ $R_J$, orbiting an evolved F-type star every $\sim 180.52$ days in an eccentric orbit ($e = 0.25 \pm 0.04$). Conclusions. This planet joins a still under-explored population of long-period ($P > 100$) massive ($M_p > 4$ $M_J$) transiting giant planets, being one of the few with a mild eccentricity. This target is a nice example of the potential of single-transit events to populate this region of the parameter space.

Unraveling the Brown Dwarf Desert: Four New Discoveries and a Unifying, Period-Coded Picture

We present four newly validated transiting brown dwarfs identified through TESS photometry and confirmed with high-precision radial velocity measurements obtained from the FEROS and PLATOSpec spectrographs. Notably, three of these companions exhibit orbital periods exceeding 100 days, thereby expanding the sample of long-period transiting brown dwarfs from two to five systems. The host stars of long-period brown dwarfs show mild subsolar metallicity. These discoveries highlight the expansion of the metal-poor, long-period distribution and help us better understand the brown dwarf desert. In our comparative analysis of eccentricity and metallicity demographics, we utilize catalogues of long-period giant planets, brown dwarfs, and low-mass stellar companions. After accounting for tidal influences, the eccentricity distribution aligns with that of low-mass stellar binaries, presenting a different profile than that observed within the giant planet population. Additionally, the metallicity of the host stars reveals a noteworthy trend: short-period transiting brown dwarfs are predominantly associated with metal-rich stars, whereas long-period brown dwarfs are more often found around metal-poor stars, demonstrating statistical similarities to low-mass stellar hosts. This trend has also been previously observed in studies of hot and cold Jupiters and points to a period-coded mixture of channels. A natural explanation is that most brown dwarfs originate from fragmentation at wider separations, with long-period systems retaining this stellar-like imprint, while only those embedded in massive, long-lived, metal-rich protoplanetary discs are efficiently delivered and stabilised to short orbits.

The evolution of PUCHEROS from a basic to a competitive tool for stellar astrophysics

We present PUCHEROS +, a new spectrograph developed as an enhanced version of PUCHEROS (Pontificia Universidad Catolica High Echelle Resolution Optical Spectrograph), which was the first high-resolution spectrograph built at the Pontificia Universidad Catolica de Chile (UC). With respect to its predecessor, PUCHEROS + includes a substantial number of improvements, mainly: a new scientific detector, improved objective optics, calibration system, guiding, active thermal control, and remote observing mode. These upgrades convert our early prototype into a much more powerful instrument for science. With a spectral resolution of R = 18000, a spectral range between 400 and 730 nm and an instrument efficiency of about 30 per cent, PUCHEROS + was tested at the ESO (European Southern Observatory) 1.52-m telescope where it has reached a limiting magnitude of about 12 in V band and radial velocity precision of about 30 m/s. The instrument was conceived as a pathfinder for the high-resolution echelle spectrograph PLATOSpec and at the same time, it demonstrates that a compact, relatively low-cost spectrograph can be efficiently employed for long-term monitoring campaigns and as support facility for space missions, in particular if operated remotely at relatively small- or medium-sized telescopes.

Two Earth-size Planets and an Earth-size Candidate Transiting the Nearby Star HD 101581

We report the validation of multiple planets transiting the nearby ($d = 12.8$ pc) K5V dwarf HD 101581 (GJ 435, TOI-6276, TIC 397362481). The system consists of at least two Earth-size planets whose orbits are near a mutual 4:3 mean-motion resonance, HD 101581 b ($R_{p} = 0.956_{-0.061}^{+0.063}~R_{\oplus}$, $P = 4.47$ days) and HD 101581 c ($R_{p} = 0.990_{-0.070}^{+0.070}~R_{\oplus}$, $P = 6.21$ days). Both planets were discovered in Sectors 63 and 64 TESS observations and statistically validated with supporting ground-based follow-up. We also identify a signal that probably originates from a third transiting planet, TOI-6276.03 ($R_{p} = 0.982_{-0.098}^{+0.114}~R_{\oplus}$, $P = 7.87$ days). These planets are remarkably uniform in size and their orbits are evenly spaced, representing a prime example of the "peas-in-a-pod" architecture seen in other compact multi-planet systems. At $V = 7.77$, HD 101581 is the brightest star known to host multiple transiting planets smaller than $1.5~R_{\oplus}$. HD 101581 is a promising system for atmospheric characterization and comparative planetology of small planets.

BD-14 3065b (TOI-4987b): from giant planet to brown dwarf: evidence for deuterium burning in old age?

The present study reports the confirmation of BD-14 3065b, a transiting planet/brown dwarf in a triple-star system, with a mass near the deuterium burning boundary. BD-14 3065b has the largest radius observed within the sample of giant planets and brown dwarfs around post-main-sequence stars. Its orbital period is 4.3 days, and it transits a subgiant F-type star with a mass of $M_\star=1.41 \pm 0.05 M_{\odot}$, a radius of $R_\star=2.35 \pm 0.08 R_{\odot}$, an effective temperature of $T_{\rm eff}=6935\pm90$ K, and a metallicity of $-0.34\pm0.05$ dex. By combining TESS photometry with high-resolution spectra acquired with the TRES and Pucheros+ spectrographs, we measured a mass of $M_p=12.37\pm0.92 M_J$ and a radius of $R_p=1.926\pm0.094 R_J$. Our discussion of potential processes that could be responsible for the inflated radius led us to conclude that deuterium burning is a plausible explanation resulting from the heating of BD-14 3065b's interior. Detection of the secondary eclipse with TESS photometry enables a precise determination of the eccentricity $e_p=0.066\pm0.011$ and reveals BD-14 3065b has a brightness temperature of $3520 \pm 130$ K. With its unique characteristics, BD-14 3065b presents an excellent opportunity to study its atmosphere through thermal emission spectroscopy.

Mass ratio of single-line spectroscopic binaries with visual orbits using Bayesian inference and suitable priors

We present orbital elements for twenty-two single-line binaries, nine of them studied for the first time, determined from a joint spectroscopic and astrometric solution. The astrometry is based on interferometric measurements obtained with the HRCam Speckle camera on the SOAR 4.1m telescope at Cerro Pachon, Chile, supplemented with historical data. The spectroscopic observations were secured using Echelle spectrographs (FEROS, FIDEOS and HARPS) at La Silla, Chile. A comparison of our orbital elements and systemic velocities with previous studies, including Gaia radial velocities, show the robustness of our estimations. By adopting suitable priors of the trigonometric parallax and spectral type of the primary component, and using a Bayesian inference methodology developed by our group, we were able to estimate mass ratios for these binaries. Combining the present results with a previous study of other single-line from our team we present a pseudo mass-to-luminosity relationship based on twenty three systems (45 stars) in the mass range 0.6 <= M_Sun <= 2.5. We find a reasonable correspondence with a fiducial mass-to-luminosity relationship. We conclude that our methodology does allow to derive tentative mass ratios for this type of binaries.

Three Saturn-mass planets transiting F-type stars revealed with TESS and HARPS

While the sample of confirmed exoplanets continues to increase, the population of transiting exoplanets around early-type stars is still limited. These planets allow us to investigate the planet properties and formation pathways over a wide range of stellar masses and study the impact of high irradiation on hot Jupiters orbiting such stars. We report the discovery of TOI-615b, TOI-622b, and TOI-2641b, three Saturn-mass planets transiting main sequence, F-type stars. The planets were identified by the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) and confirmed with complementary ground-based and radial velocity observations. TOI-615b is a highly irradiated ($\sim$1277 $F_{\oplus}$) and bloated Saturn-mass planet (1.69$^{+0.05}_{-0.06}$$R_{Jup}$ and 0.43$^{+0.09}_{-0.08}$$M_{Jup}$) in a 4.66 day orbit transiting a 6850 K star. TOI-622b has a radius of 0.82$^{+0.03}_{-0.03}$$R_{Jup}$ and a mass of 0.30$^{+0.07}_{-0.08}$~$M_{Jup}$ in a 6.40 day orbit. Despite its high insolation flux ($\sim$600 $F_{\oplus}$), TOI-622b does not show any evidence of radius inflation. TOI-2641b is a 0.39$^{+0.02}_{-0.04}$$M_{Jup}$ planet in a 4.88 day orbit with a grazing transit (b = 1.04$^{+0.05}_{-0.06 }$) that results in a poorly constrained radius of 1.61$^{+0.46}_{-0.64}$$R_{Jup}$. Additionally, TOI-615b is considered attractive for atmospheric studies via transmission spectroscopy with ground-based spectrographs and $\textit{JWST}$. Future atmospheric and spin-orbit alignment observations are essential since they can provide information on the atmospheric composition, formation and migration of exoplanets across various stellar types.

HIRES, the high-resolution spectrograph for the ELT

HIRES will be the high-resolution spectrograph of the European Extremely Large Telescope at optical and near-infrared wavelengths. It consists of three fibre-fed spectrographs providing a wavelength coverage of 0.4-1.8 mic (goal 0.35-1.8 mic) at a spectral resolution of ~100,000. The fibre-feeding allows HIRES to have several, interchangeable observing modes including a SCAO module and a small diffraction-limited IFU in the NIR. Therefore, it will be able to operate both in seeing and diffraction-limited modes. ELT-HIRES has a wide range of science cases spanning nearly all areas of research in astrophysics and even fundamental physics. Some of the top science cases will be the detection of bio signatures from exoplanet atmospheres, finding the fingerprints of the first generation of stars (PopIII), tests on the stability of Nature's fundamental couplings, and the direct detection of the cosmic acceleration. The HIRES consortium is composed of more than 30 institutes from 14 countries, forming a team of more than 200 scientists and engineers.

TOI-481 b & TOI-892 b: Two long period hot Jupiters from the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite

We present the discovery of two new 10-day period giant planets from the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite ($TESS$) mission, whose masses were precisely determined using a wide diversity of ground-based facilities. TOI-481 b and TOI-892 b have similar radii ($0.99\pm0.01$ $\rm R_{J}$ and $1.07\pm0.02$ $\rm R_{J}$, respectively), and orbital periods (10.3311 days and 10.6266 days, respectively), but significantly different masses ($1.53\pm0.03$ $\rm M_{J}$ versus $0.95\pm0.07$ $\rm M_{J}$, respectively). Both planets orbit metal-rich stars ([Fe/H]= $+0.26\pm 0.05$ dex and [Fe/H] = $+0.24 \pm 0.05$ dex, for TOI-481 and TOI-892, respectively) but at different evolutionary stages. TOI-481 is a $\rm M_{\star}$ = $1.14\pm0.02$ $\rm M_{\odot}$, $\rm R_{\star}$ = $1.66\pm0.02$ $\rm R_{\odot}$ G-type star ($T_{\rm eff}$ = $5735 \pm 72$ K), that with an age of 6.7 Gyr, is in the turn-off point of the main sequence. TOI-892, on the other hand, is a F-type dwarf star ($T_{\rm eff}$ = $6261 \pm 80$ K), which has a mass of $\rm M_{\star}$ = $1.28\pm0.03$ $\rm M_{\odot}$, and a radius of $\rm R_{\star}$ = $1.39\pm0.02$ $\rm R_{\odot}$. TOI-481 b and TOI-892 b join the scarcely populated region of transiting gas giants with orbital periods longer than 10 days, which is important to constrain theories of the formation and structure of hot Jupiters.

HD 1397b: a transiting warm giant planet orbiting a V = 7.8 mag sub-giant star discovered by TESS

We report the discovery of a transiting planet first identified as a candidate in Sector 1 of the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS), and then confirmed with precision radial velocities. HD1397b has a mass of ${\rm M_P}$ = $0.335_{-0.018}^{+0.018}$ ${\rm M_J}$, a radius of ${\rm R_P}$ = $1.021_{-0.014}^{+0.015}$ ${\rm M_J}$, and orbits its bright host star ($V = 7.8$ mag) with an orbital period of $11.53508 \pm 0.00057 $ d, on a moderately eccentric orbit ($e$ = 0.210 $\pm$ 0.038). With a mass of ${\rm M}_{\star}$ = $1.284_{-0.016}^{+0.020}$ ${\rm M}_{J}$, a radius of ${\rm R}_{\star}$ = 2.314$_{-0.042}^{+0.049}$ ${\rm R_J}$, and an age of 4.7 $\pm$ 0.2 Gyr, the solar metallicity host star has already departed from the main sequence. We find evidence in the radial velocity measurements for a long term acceleration, and a $P \approx 18$ d periodic signal that we attribute to rotational modulation by stellar activity. The HD1397 system is among the brightest systems currently known to host a transiting planet, which will make it possible to perform detailed follow-up observations in order to characterize the properties of giant planets orbiting evolved stars.

The interstellar medium of dwarf galaxies: new insights from Machine Learning analysis of emission line spectra

Dwarf galaxies are ideal laboratories to study the physics of the interstellar medium (ISM). Emission lines have been widely used to this aim. Retrieving the full information encoded in the spectra is therefore essential. This can be efficiently and reliably done using Machine Learning (ML) algorithms. Here, we apply the ML code GAME to MUSE (Multi Unit Spectroscopic Explorer) and PMAS (Potsdam Multi Aperture Spectrophotometer) Integral Field Unit (IFU) observations of two nearby Blue Compact Galaxies (BCGs): Henize 2-10 and IZw18. We derive spatially resolved maps of several key ISM physical properties. We find that both galaxies show a remarkably uniform metallicity distribution. Henize 2-10 is a star forming dominated galaxy, with a Star Formation Rate (SFR) of about 1.2 M$_{\odot}$ yr$^{-1}$. Henize 2-10 features dense and dusty ($A_V$ up to 5-7 mag) star forming central sites. We find IZw18 to be very metal-poor ($Z$= 1/20 $Z_{\odot}$). IZw18 has a strong interstellar radiation field, with a large ionization parameter. We also use models of PopIII stars spectral energy distribution as a possible ionizing source for the HeII $λ$4686 emission detected in the IZw18 NW component. We find that PopIII stars could provide a significant contribution to the line intensity. The upper limit to the PopIII star formation is 52% of the total IZw18 SFR.

$τ$ Ori and $τ$ Lib: Two new massive heartbeat binaries

We report the discovery of two massive eccentric systems with BRITE data, $τ$ Ori and $τ$ Lib, showing heartbeat effects close to the periastron passage. $τ$ Lib exhibits shallow eclipses that will soon vanish due to the apsidal motion in the system. In neither system, tidally excited oscillations were detected.

The Association of Molecular Gas and Natal Super Star Clusters in Henize 2-10

We present ALMA observations of the dwarf starburst galaxy Henize 2-10 in combination with previous SMA CO observations to probe the molecular environments of natal super star clusters. These observations include the HCO$^+$(1-0), HCN(1-0), HNC(1-0), and CCH(1-0) molecular lines, as well as 88 GHz continuum with a spatial resolution of $1''.7\times 1''.6$. After correcting for the contribution from free-free emission to the 88 GHz continuum flux density ($\sim$ 60% of the 88 GHz emission), we derive a total gas mass for He~2-10 of $M_{gas} = 4-6\times10^8$ M$_{\odot}$, roughly 5-20% of the dynamical mass. Based on a principle component analysis, HCO$^+$ is found to be the best "general" tracer of molecular emission. The line widths and luminosities of the CO emission suggests that the molecular clouds could either be as small as $\sim 8$ pc, or alternately have enhanced line widths. The CO emission and 88 GHz continuum are anti-correlated, suggesting that either the dust and molecular gas are not cospatial, which could reflect the 88 GHz continuum is dominated by free-free emission. The CO and CCH emission are also relatively anti-correlated, which is consistent with the CCH being photo-enhanced, and/or the CO being dissociated in the regions near the natal super star clusters. The molecular line ratios of regions containing the natal star clusters are different from the line ratios observed for regions elsewhere in the galaxy. In particular, the regions with thermal radio emission all have CO(2-1)/HCO$^+(1-0) < 16$, and the HCO$^+$/CO ratio appears to be correlated with the evolutionary stage of the clusters.

The MUSE view of He 2-10: no AGN ionization but a sparkling starburst

We study the physical and dynamical properties of the ionized gas in the prototypical HII galaxy Henize 2-10 using MUSE integral field spectroscopy. The large scale dynamics is dominated by extended outflowing bubbles, probably the results of massive gas ejection from the central star forming regions. We derive a mass outflow rate dMout/dt~0.30 Msun/yr, corresponding to mass loading factor eta~0.4, in range with similar measurements in local LIRGs. Such a massive outflow has a total kinetic energy that is sustainable by the stellar winds and Supernova Remnants expected in the galaxy. We use classical emission line diagnostic to study the dust extinction, electron density and ionization conditions all across the galaxy, confirming the extreme nature of the highly star forming knots in the core of the galaxy, which show high density and high ionization parameter. We measure the gas phase metallicity in the galaxy taking into account the strong variation of the ionization parameter, finding that the external parts of the galaxy have abundances as low as 12 + log(O/H)~8.3, while the central star forming knots are highly enriched with super solar metallicity. We find no sign of AGN ionization in the galaxy, despite the recent claim of the presence of a super massive active Black Hole in the core of He~2-10. We therefore reanalyze the X-ray data that were used to propose the presence of the AGN, but we conclude that the observed X-ray emission can be better explained with sources of a different nature, such as a Supernova Remnant.

VISTA Variables in the Vía Láctea (VVV): Halfway Status and Results

The VISTA Variables in the Vía Láctea (VVV) survey is one of six public ESO surveys, and is now in its 4th year of observing. Although far from being complete, the VVV survey has already delivered many results, some directly connected to the intended science goals (detection of variables stars, microlensing events, new star clusters), others concerning more exotic objects, e.g. novae. Now, at the end of the fourth observing period, and comprising roughly 50% of the proposed observations, the actual status of the survey, as well some of the results based on the VVV data, are presented.

Variability of the Infrared Excess of Extreme Debris Disks

Debris disks with extremely large infrared excesses (fractional luminosities $> 10^{-2}$) are rare. Those with ages between 30 and 130 Myr are of interest because their evolution has progressed well beyond that of protoplanetary disks (which dissipate with a timescale of order 3 Myr), yet they represent a period when dynamical models suggest that terrestrial planet building may still be progressing through large, violent collisions that could yield large amounts of debris and large infrared excesses. For example, our Moon was formed through a violent collision of two large proto-planets during this age range. We report two disks around the solar-like stars ID8 and HD 23514 in this age range where the 24 μm infrared excesses vary on timescales of a few years, even though the stars are not variable in the optical. Variations this rapid are difficult to understand if the debris is produced by collisional cascades, as it is for most debris disks. It is possible that the debris in these two systems arises in part from condensates from silicate-rich vapor produced in a series of violent collisions among relatively large bodies. If their evolution is rapid, the rate of detection of extreme excesses would indicate that major collisions may be relatively common in this age range.

Integral-field near-infrared spectroscopy of two blue dwarf galaxies: NGC 5253 and He 2-10

We present integral field spectroscopy in the near infrared (NIR) of He 2-10 and NGC 5253, two well known nearby dwarf irregular galaxies showing high star-formation rates. Our data provide an unprecedented detailed view of the interstellar medium and star formation in these galaxies, allowing us to obtain spatially resolved information from the NIR emission and absorption line tracers. We study the spatial distribution and kinematics of different components of the interstellar medium (ISM) mostly through the Bracket series lines, the molecular hydrogen spectrum, [FeII] emission, and CO absorptions. Although the ISM is mostly photo-excited, as derived by the [FeII]/Bry and H2 line ratios, some regions corresponding to non-thermal radio sources show a [FeII]/Bry excess due to a significant contribution of SN driven shocks. In He 2-10 we find that the molecular gas clouds, as traced by CO(2-1) and H2 infrared line, show consistent morphologies and velocities when studied with the two different tracers. Moreover, there is a clear association with the youngest super star clusters as traced by the ionized gas. In the same galaxy we observe a cavity depleted of gas, which is surrounded by some of the most active regions of star formation, that we interpret as a signature of feedback-induced star formation from older episodes of star formation. Finally, we measured high turbulence in the ISM of both galaxies, sigma~30-80 km/s, driven by the high star-formation activity.
