On stochastic perturbations of slowly changing dynamical systems

In this paper we consider a diffusion process obtained as a small random perturbation of a dynamical system attracted to a stable equilibrium point. The drift and the diffusive perturbation are assumed to evolve slowly in time. We describe the asymptotics of the time it takes the process to exit a given domain and the limiting distribution of the exit point.

On the behavior of diffusion processes with traps

We consider processes that coincide with a given diffusion process outside a finite collection of domains. In each of the domains, there is, additionally, a large drift directed towards the interior of the domain. We describe the limiting behavior of the processes as the magnitude of the drift tends to infinity, and thus the domains become trapping, with the time to exit the domains being exponentially large. In particular, in exponential time scales, metastable distributions between the trapping regions are considered.

Critical behavior of random polymers

The aim of this paper is to investigate the distribution of a continuous homopolymer in the presence of an attractive finitely supported potential. The most intricate behavior can be observed if we simultaneously vary two parameters: the temperature, which approaches the critical value, and the length of the polymer, which tends to infinity. As the main result, we identify the distributions that appear in the limit (after a diffusive scaling of the original polymer measures) and depend on the relation between the two parameters.

Branching diffusion in the super-critical regime

We investigate the long-time evolution of branching diffusion processes (starting with a single particle) in inhomogeneous media. The qualitative behavior of the processes depends on the intensity of the branching. We analyze the super-critical case, when the total number of particles growing exponentially with positive probability. We study the asymptotics of the number of particles in different regions of space and describe the growth of the region occupied by the particles.

Branching diffusion in inhomogeneous media

We investigate the long-time evolution of branching diffusion processes (starting with a finite number of particles) in inhomogeneous media. The qualitative behavior of the processes depends on the intensity of the branching. In the super-critical regime, we describe the asymptotics of the number of particles in a given domain. In the sub-critical and critical regimes, we show that the limiting number of particles is finite and describe its distribution.

Motion in a Random Force Field

We consider the motion of a particle in a random isotropic force field. Assuming that the force field arises from a Poisson field in $\mathbb{R}^d$, $d \geq 4$, and the initial velocity of the particle is sufficiently large, we describe the asymptotic behavior of the particle.

Averaging of Hamiltonian flows with an ergodic component

We consider a process on $\mathbb{T}^2$, which consists of fast motion along the stream lines of an incompressible periodic vector field perturbed by white noise. It gives rise to a process on the graph naturally associated to the structure of the stream lines of the unperturbed flow. It has been shown by Freidlin and Wentzell [Random Perturbations of Dynamical Systems, 2nd ed. Springer, New York (1998)] and [Mem. Amer. Math. Soc. 109 (1994)] that if the stream function of the flow is periodic, then the corresponding process on the graph weakly converges to a Markov process. We consider the situation where the stream function is not periodic, and the flow (when considered on the torus) has an ergodic component of positive measure. We show that if the rotation number is Diophantine, then the process on the graph still converges to a Markov process, which spends a positive proportion of time in the vertex corresponding to the ergodic component of the flow.

Sample path properties of the stochastic flows

We consider a stochastic flow driven by a finite dimensional Brownian motion. We show that almost every realization of such a flow exhibits strong statistical properties such as the exponential convergence of an initial measure to the equilibrium state and the central limit theorem. The proof uses new estimates of the mixing rates of the multipoint motion.

Hausdorff dimension in stochastic dispersion

We consider the evolution of a connected set in Euclidean space carried by a periodic incompressible stochastic flow. While for almost every realization of the random flow at time t most of the particles are at a distance of order sqrt{t} away from the origin [DKK1], there is an uncountable set of measure zero of points, which escape to infinity at the linear rate [CSS1]. In this paper we prove that this set of linear escape points has full Hausdorff dimension.

A limit shape theorem for periodic stochastic dispersion

We consider the evolution of a connected set on the plane carried by a periodic incompressible stochastic flow. While for almost every realization of the random flow at time t most of the particles are at a distance of order sqrt{t} away from the origin, there is a measure zero set of points, which escape to infinity at the linear rate. We study the set of points visited by the original set by time t, and show that such a set, when scaled down by the factor of t, has a limiting non random shape.
