Eigenforms of hyperelliptic curves with many automorphisms

Given a pair of translation surfaces it is very difficult to determine whether they are supported on the same algebraic curve. In fact, there are very few examples of such pairs. In this note we present infinitely many examples of finite collections of translation surfaces supported on the same algebraic curve. The underlying curves are hyperelliptic curves with many automorphisms. For each curve, the automorphism of maximal order acts on the space of holomorphic 1-forms. We present a translation surface corresponding to each of the eigenforms of this action.

Complete quadrics: Schubert calculus for Gaussian models and semidefinite programming

We establish connections between: the maximum likelihood degree (ML-degree) for linear concentration models, the algebraic degree of semidefinite programming (SDP), and Schubert calculus for complete quadrics. We prove a conjecture by Sturmfels and Uhler on the polynomiality of the ML-degree. We also prove a conjecture by Nie, Ranestad and Sturmfels providing an explicit formula for the degree of SDP. The interactions between the three fields shed new light on the asymptotic behaviour of enumerative invariants for the variety of complete quadrics. We also extend these results to spaces of general matrices and of skew-symmetric matrices.

Maximum likelihood degree, complete quadrics and ${\mathbb C}^*$-action

We study the maximum likelihood (ML) degree of linear concentration models in algebraic statistics. We relate it to an intersection problem on the variety of complete quadrics. This allows us to provide an explicit, basic, albeit of high computational complexity, formula for the ML-degree. The variety of complete quadrics is an exact analog for symmetric matrices of the permutohedron variety for the diagonal matrices.

Overdetermined Systems of Equations on Toric, Spherical, and Other Algebraic Varieties

Let $E_1,\ldots,E_k$ be a collection of linear series on an algebraic variety $X$ over $\mathbb{C}$. That is, $E_i\subset H^0(X, \mathcal{L}_i)$ is a finite dimensional subspace of the space of regular sections of line bundles $ \mathcal{L}_i$. Such a collection is called overdetermined if the generic system \[ s_1 = \ldots = s_k = 0, \] with $s_i\in E_i$ does not have any roots on $X$. In this paper we study solvable systems which are given by an overdetermined collection of linear series. Generalizing the notion of a resultant hypersurface we define a consistency variety $R\subset \prod_{i=1}^k E_i$ as the closure of the set of all systems which have at least one common root and study general properties of zero sets $Z_{\bf s}$ of a generic consistent system ${\bf s}\in R$. Then, in the case of equivariant linear series on spherical homogeneous spaces we provide a strategy for computing discrete invariants of such generic non-empty set $Z_{\bf s}$. For equivariant linear series on the torus $(\mathbb{C}^*)^n$ this strategy provides explicit calculations and generalizes the theory of Newton polyhedra.

On normalizations of Thurston measure on the space of measured laminations

The space of measured laminations $\mathcal{ML}(Σ)$ associated to a topological surface $Σ$ of genus $g$ with $n$ punctures is an integral piecewise linear manifold of real dimension $6g-6+2n$. There is also a natural symplectic structure on $\mathcal{ML}(Σ)$ defined by Thurston. The integral and symplectic structures define a pair of measures on $\mathcal{ML}(Σ)$ which are known to be proportional. The projective class of these measures on $\mathcal{ML}(Σ)$ is called the Thurston measure. In this note we compute the ratio between two normailzations of the Thurston measure.

Discrete Invariants of Generically Inconsistent Systems of Laurent Polynomials

Let $ \mathcal{A}_1, \ldots, \mathcal{A}_k $ be finite sets in $ \mathbb{Z}^n $ and let $ Y \subset (\mathbb{C}^*)^n $ be an algebraic variety defined by a system of equations \[ f_1 = \ldots = f_k = 0, \] where $ f_1, \ldots, f_k $ are Laurent polynomials with supports in $\mathcal{A}_1, \ldots, \mathcal{A}_k$. Assuming that $ f_1, \ldots, f_k $ are sufficiently generic, the Newton polyhedron theory computes discrete invariants of $ Y $ in terms of the Newton polyhedra of $ f_1, \ldots, f_k $. It may appear that the generic system with fixed supports $ \mathcal{A}_1, \ldots, \mathcal{A}_k $ is inconsistent. In this paper, we compute discrete invariants of algebraic varieties defined by system of equations which are generic in the set of consistent system with support in $\mathcal{A}_1, \ldots, \mathcal{A}_k$ by reducing the question to the Newton polyhedra theory. Unlike the classical situation, not only the Newton polyhedra of $f_1,\dots,f_k$, but also the supports $\mathcal{A}_1, \ldots, \mathcal{A}_k$ themselves appear in the answers.

The Resultant of Developed Systems of Laurent Polynomials

Let $R_Δ(f_1,\ldots,f_{n+1})$ be the {\it $Δ$-resultant} (see below) of $(n+1)$-tuple of Laurent polynomials. We provide an algorithm for computing $R_Δ$ assuming that an $n$-tuple $(f_2,\dots,f_{n+1})$ is {\it developed} (see sec.6). We provide a relation between the product of $f_1$ over roots of $f_2=\dots=f_{n+1}=0$ in $(\mathbb C^*)^n$ and the product of $f_2$ over roots of $f_1=f_3=\dots=f_{n+1}=0$ in $(\mathbb C^*)^n$ assuming that the $n$-tuple $(f_1f_2,f_3,\ldots,f_{n+1})$ is developed. If all $n$-tuples contained in $(f_1,\dots,f_{n+1})$ are developed we provide a signed version of Poisson formula for $R_Δ$. In our proofs we use a topological arguments and topological version of the Parshin reciprocity laws.

Equations of $\,\overline{M}_{0,n}$

Following work of Keel and Tevelev, we give explicit polynomials in the Cox ring of $\mathbb{P}^1\times\cdots\times\mathbb{P}^{n-3}$ that, conjecturally, determine $\overline{M}_{0,n}$ as a subscheme. Using Macaulay2, we prove that these equations generate the ideal for $n=5, 6, 7, 8$. For $n \leq 6$ we give a cohomological proof that these polynomials realize $\overline{M}_{0,n}$ as a projective variety, embedded in $\mathbb{P}^{(n-2)!-1}$ by the complete log canonical linear system.
