Quantum phase slips in the presence of finite-range disorder

To study the effect of disorder on quantum phase slips (QPS) in superconducting wires, we consider the plasmon-only model where disorder can be incorporated into a first-principles instanton calculation. We consider weak but general finite-range disorder and compute the formfactor in the QPS rate associated with momentum transfer. We find that the system maps onto dissipative quantum mechanics, with the dissipative coefficient controlled by the wave (plasmon) impedance Z of the wire and with a superconductor-insulator transition at Z=6.5 kOhm. We speculate that the system will remain in this universality class after resistive effects at the QPS core are taken into account.

Scalable design of tailored soft pulses for coherent control

We present a scalable scheme to design optimized soft pulses and pulse sequences for coherent control of interacting quantum many-body systems. The scheme is based on the cluster expansion and the time dependent perturbation theory implemented numerically. This approach offers a dramatic advantage in numerical efficiency, and it is also more convenient than the commonly used Magnus expansion, especially when dealing with higher order terms. We illustrate the scheme by designing 2nd-order pi-pulses and a 6th-order 8-pulse refocusing sequence for a chain of qubits with nearest-neighbor couplings. We also discuss the performance of soft-pulse refocusing sequences in suppressing decoherence due to low-frequency environment.

Supersolids versus phase separation in two-dimensional lattice bosons

We study the nature of the ground state of the strongly-coupled two dimensional extended boson Hubbard model on a square lattice. We demonstrate that strong but finite on-site interaction U along with a comparable nearest-neighbor repulsion V result in a thermodynamically stable supersolid ground state just above half-filling, and that the checker-board crystal is unstable for smaller V, and for any V just below half-filling. The interplay between these two interaction energies results in a rich phase diagram which is studied in detail using quantum Monte Carlo methods.

Driven classical diffusion with strong correlated disorder

We analyze one-dimensional motion of an overdamped classical particle in the presence of external disorder potential and an arbitrary driving force F. In thermodynamical limit the effective force-dependent mobility mu(F) is self-averaging, although the required system size may be exponentially large for strong disorder. We calculate the mobility mu(F) exactly, generalizing the known results in linear response (weak driving force) and the perturbation theory in powers of the disorder amplitude. For a strong disorder potential with power-law correlations we identify a non-linear regime with a prominent power-law dependence of the logarithm of mu(F) on the driving force.

Low-frequency conductivity of a non-degenerate 2D electron liquid in strong magnetic fields

We study the conductivity of a nondegenerate 2D electron liquid in a quantizing magnetic field for frequencies well below the cyclotron frequency. The conductivity is formed by electron transitions in which the energy of a photon goes to the interaction energy of the many-electron system, whereas the involved momentum is transferred to quenched disorder. The conductivity peak is non-Lorentzian. Its shape depends on the relation between the correlation length r_c of the disorder potential and the typical amplitude delta_f of vibrations of the electrons about their quasi-equilibrium positions in the liquid. The width of the peak is determined by the reciprocal time it takes an electron to move over r_c (or the magnetic length l, for r_c< l). In turn, this time is determined by vibrational or diffusive motion, depending on the ratio r_c/delta_f. We analyze the tail of the conductivity peak for short-range disorder. It is formed by multiple collisions with the disorder potential. We also analyze scattering by rare negatively charged traps and show that the conductivity spectrum in this case depends on both short- and long-time electron dynamics.

Single electron magneto-conductivity of a nondegenerate 2D electron system in a quantizing magnetic field

We study transport properties of a non-degenerate two-dimensional system of non-interacting electrons in the presence of a quantizing magnetic field and a short-range disorder potential. We show that the low-frequency magnetoconductivity displays a strongly asymmetric peak at a nonzero frequency. The shape of the peak is restored from the calculated 14 spectral moments, the asymptotic form of its high-frequency tail, and the scaling behavior of the conductivity for omega -> 0. We also calculate 10 spectral moments of the cyclotron resonance absorption peak and restore the corresponding (non-singular) frequency dependence using the continuous fraction expansion. Both expansions converge rapidly with increasing number of included moments, and give numerically accurate results throughout the region of interest. We discuss the possibility of experimental observation of the predicted effects for electrons on helium.

The fractional quantum Hall effect in infinite layer systems

Stacked two dimensional electron systems in transverse magnetic fields exhibit three dimensional fractional quantum Hall phases. We analyze the simplest such phases and find novel bulk properties, e.g., irrational braiding. These phases host ``one and a half'' dimensional surface phases in which motion in one direction is chiral. We offer a general analysis of conduction in the latter by combining sum rule and renormalization group arguments, and find that when interlayer tunneling is marginal or irrelevant they are chiral semi-metals that conduct only at T > 0 or with disorder.

Notes on Infinite Layer Quantum Hall Systems

We study the fractional quantum Hall effect in three dimensional systems consisting of infinitely many stacked two dimensional electron gases placed in transverse magnetic fields. This limit introduces new features into the bulk physics such as quasiparticles with non-trivial internal structure, irrational braiding phases, and the necessity of a boundary hierarchy construction for interlayer correlated states. The bulk states host a family of surface phases obtained by hybridizing the edge states in each layer. We analyze the surface conduction in these phases by means of sum rule and renormalization group arguments and by explicit computations at weak tunneling in the presence of disorder. We find that in cases where the interlayer electron tunneling is not relevant in the clean limit, the surface phases are chiral semi-metals that conduct only in the presence of disorder or at finite temperature. We show that this class of problems which are naturally formulated as interacting bosonic theories can be fermionized by a general technique that could prove useful in the solution of such ``one and a half'' dimensional problems.

Edge Dynamics in Quantum Hall Bilayers II: Exact Results with Disorder and Parallel Fields

We study edge dynamics in the presence of interlayer tunneling, parallel magnetic field, and various types of disorder for two infinite sequences of quantum Hall states in symmetric bilayers. These sequences begin with the 110 and 331 Halperin states and include their fractional descendants at lower filling factors; the former is easily realized experimentally while the latter is a candidate for the experimentally observed quantum Hall state at a total filling factor of 1/2 in bilayers. We discuss the experimentally interesting observables that involve just one chiral edge of the sample and the correlation functions needed for computing them. We present several methods for obtaining exact results in the presence of interactions and disorder which rely on the chiral character of the system. Of particular interest are our results on the 331 state which suggest that a time-resolved measurement at the edge can be used to discriminate between the 331 and Pfaffian scenarios for the observed quantum Hall state at filling factor 1/2 in realistic double-layer systems.

Low-frequency peak in the magnetoconductivity of a non-degenerate 2D electron liquid

We study the frequency-dependent magnetoconductivity of a strongly correlated nondegenerate 2D electron system in a quantizing magnetic field. We first restore the single-electron conductivity from calculated 14 spectral moments. It has a maximum for omega ~ gamma (hbar gamma is the disorder-induced width of the Landau level), and scales as a power of omega for omega ->0, with a universal exponent. Even for strong coupling to scatterers, the electron-electron interaction modifies the conductivity for low and high frequencies, and gives rise to a nonzero static conductivity. We analyze the full many-electron conductivity, and discuss the experiment.

Holons on a meandering stripe: quantum numbers

We attempt to access the regime of strong coupling between charge carriers and transverse dynamics of an isolated conducting ``stripe'', such as those found in cuprate superconductors. A stripe is modeled as a partially doped domain wall in an antiferromagnet (AF), introduced in the context of two different models: the t-J model with strong Ising anisotropy, and the Hubbard model in the Hartree-Fock approximation. The domain walls with a given linear charge density are supported artificially by boundary conditions. In both models we find a regime of parameters where doped holes lose their spin and become holons (charge Q=1, spin S_z=0), which can move along the stripe without frustrating AF environment. One aspect in which the holons on the AF domain wall differ from those in an ordinary one-dimensional electron gas is their transverse degree of freedom: a mobile holon always resides on a transverse kink (or antikink) of the domain wall. This gives rise to two holon flavors and to a strong coupling between doped charges and transverse fluctuations of a stripe.

Search for effective models of stripes in the cuprates

We argue that effective 1D models of stripes in the cuprate superconductors can be constructed by studying ground states and elementary excitations of domain walls in 2D model antiferromagnets. This method, applied to the t-J model with Ising anisotropy, yields two such limiting cases: an ordinary 1D electron gas and a 1D gas of holons strongly coupled to transversal fluctuations of the stripe.

Quantum Hall Bilayers and the Chiral Sine-Gordon Equation

The edge state theory of a class of symmetric double-layer quantum Hall systems with interlayer electron tunneling reduces to the sum of a free field theory and a field theory of a chiral Bose field with a self-interaction of the sine-Gordon form. We argue that the perturbative renormalization group flow of this chiral sine-Gordon theory is distinct from the standard (non-chiral) sine-Gordon theory, contrary to a previous assertion by Renn, and that the theory is manifestly sensible only at a discrete set of values of the inverse period of the cosine interaction (beta). We obtain exact solutions for the spectra and correlation functions of the chiral sine-Gordon theory at the two values of beta at which the electron tunneling in bilayers is not irrelevant. Of these, the marginal case (beta^2=4) is of greatest interest: the spectrum of the interacting theory is that of two Majorana fermions with different, dynamically generated, velocities. For the experimentally observed bilayer 331 state at filling factor 1/2, this implies the trifurcation of electrons added to the edge. We also present a method for fermionizing the theory at the discrete points (integer beta^2) by the introduction of auxiliary degrees of freedom that could prove useful in other problems involving quantum Hall multilayers.

Intersecting Loop Models on Z^D: Rigorous Results

We consider a general class of (intersecting) loop models in D dimensions, including those related to high-temperature expansions of well-known spin models. We find that the loop models exhibit some interesting features - often in the ``unphysical'' region of parameter space where all connection with the original spin Hamiltonian is apparently lost. For a particular n=2, D=2 model, we establish the existence of a phase transition, possibly associated with divergent loops. However, for n >> 1 and arbitrary D there is no phase transition marked by the appearance of large loops. Furthermore, at least for D=2 (and n large) we find a phase transition characterised by broken translational symmetry.

Coulomb interactions and delocalization in quantum Hall constrictions

We study a geometry-dependent effect of long-range Coulomb interactions on quantum Hall (QH) tunneling junctions. In an X-shaped geometry, duality relates junctions with opening angles alpha and (pi - alpha). We prove that duality between weak tunneling and weak backscattering survives in the presence of long range interactions, and that their effects are precisely cancelled in the self dual geometry alpha=pi/2. Tunneling exponents as a function of alpha, the interaction strength chi, and the filling fraction nu are calculated. We find that Coulomb interaction induces localization in narrow channels (large alpha), and delocalization for sharply pinched constrictions (small alpha). Consequently, an insulator to metal transition happens at an angle alpha_c(chi,nu) <=pi/2. We discuss the implications of our results for tunneling experiments in QH-constriction and cleaved-edge geometries.

Holons on a meandering stripe

To study a possible effect of transverse fluctuations of a stripe in a 2D antiferromagnet on its charge dynamics, we identify elementary excitations of a weakly doped domain wall in the Hubbard model. Hartree-Fock numerics and analysis of fermion zero modes suggest that for U>=3t charged excitations are mobile holons, Q=1, S=0. Each holon resides on a kink in the position of the domain wall. We construct a simple model in which transverse stripe dynamics is induced solely by motion of the holons. In the absence of spin excitations (spinons, Q=0, S=1/2), stripe fluctuations DO NOT suppress a tendency to form a global charge-density order.

Topological doping and the stability of stripe phases

We analyze the properties of a general Ginzburg-Landau free energy with competing order parameters, long-range interactions, and global constraints (e.g., a fixed value of a total ``charge'') to address the physics of stripe phases in underdoped high-Tc and related materials. For a local free energy limited to quadratic terms of the gradient expansion, only uniform or phase-separated configurations are thermodynamically stable. ``Stripe'' or other non-uniform phases can be stabilized by long-range forces, but can only have non-topological (in-phase) domain walls where the components of the antiferromagnetic order parameter never change sign, and the periods of charge and spin density waves coincide. The antiphase domain walls observed experimentally require physics on an intermediate lengthscale, and they are absent from a model that involves only long-distance physics. Dense stripe phases can be stable even in the absence of long-range forces, but domain walls always attract at large distances, i.e., there is a ubiquitous tendency to phase separation at small doping. The implications for the phase diagram of underdoped cuprates are discussed.

Hall Resistivity and Dephasing in the Quantum Hall Insulator

The longstanding problem of the Hall resistivity rho(x,y) in the Hall insulator phase is addressed using four-lead Chalker-Coddington networks. Electron interaction effects are introduced via a finite dephasing length. In the quantum coherent regime, we find that rho(x,y) scales with the longitudinal resistivity rho(x,x), and they both diverge exponentially with dephasing length. In the Ohmic limit, (dephasing length shorter than Hall puddles' size), rho(x,y) remains quantized and independent of rho(x,x). This suggests a new experimental probe for dephasing processes.
