Chiral spin symmetry and the QCD phase diagram

Lattice QCD simulations with chirally symmetric quarks have recently established approximate $SU(2)_{CS}$ and $SU(2N_F)$ symmetries of the quantum effective action in a temperature range above the chiral crossover $T_\mathrm{ch}$, in which color-electric interactions between quarks dominate the dynamics. We show that such an intermediate temperature range between the chirally broken and plasma regimes is fully consistent with published screening mass spectra, which demonstrate the breakdown of thermal perturbation theory at the crossover between the partonic and the chiral spin symmetric regime at $T_s\sim (2-3)T_\mathrm{ch}$. From the known behavior of screening masses with baryon chemical potential, we deduce qualitatively how this chiral spin symmetric band extends into the QCD phase diagram. In the cold and dense region, we propose parity doubled baryons as possible candidates for chiral spin symmetric matter. This represents a special case of quarkyonic matter with confinement and restored chiral symmetry, and can smoothly transform to quark matter at sufficiently high densities. Finally, we discuss the potential of dilepton spectra to identify such matter forms.

On chiral spin symmetry and the QCD phase diagram

Recently, an approximate $SU(4)$ chiral spin-flavour symmetry was observed in multiplet patterns of QCD meson correlation functions, in a temperature range above the chiral crossover. This symmetry is larger than the chiral symmetry of massless QCD, and can only arise effectively when colour-electric quark-gluon interactions dynamically dominate the quantum effective action. At temperatures about three times the crossover temperature, these patterns disappear again, indicating the screening of colour-electric interactions, and the expected chiral symmetry is recovered. In this contribution we collect independent evidence for such an intermediate temperature range, based on screening masses and the pion spectral function. Both kinds of observables behave non-perturbatively in this window, with resonance-like peaks for the pion and its first excitation disappearing gradually with temperature. Using symmetry arguments and the known behaviour of screening masses at small densities, we discuss how this chiral spin symmetric band continues into the QCD phase diagram.

Chiral-spin symmetry emergence in baryons and eigenmodes of the Dirac operator

Truncating the low-lying modes of the lattice Dirac operator results in an emergence of the chiral-spin symmetry $SU(2)_{CS}$ and its flavor extension $SU(2N_F)$ in hadrons. These are symmetries of the quark - chromo-electric interaction and include chiral symmetries as subgroups. Hence the quark - chromo-magnetic interaction, which breaks both symmetries, is located at least predominantly in the near - zero modes. Using as a tool the expansion of propagators into eigenmodes of the Dirac operator we here analytically study effects of a gap in the eigenmode spectrum on baryon correlators. We find that both $U(1)_A$ and $SU(2)_L \times SU(2)_R$ emerge automatically if there is a gap around zero. Emergence of larger $SU(2)_{CS}$ and $SU(4)$ symmetries requires in addition a microscopical dynamical input about the higher-lying modes and their symmetry structure.

Baryon axial charges from Chirally Improved fermions - first results

We present first results from dynamical Chirally Improved (CI) fermion simulations for the axial charge $G_A$ of various hadrons. We work with 16^3x32 lattices of spatial extent 2.4 fm and use the variational method with a suitable basis of Jacobi-smeared interpolators to suppress contaminations from excited states.

The chiral and angular momentum content of the rho-meson

It is possible to define and calculate in a gauge-invariant manner the chiral as well as the partial wave content of the quark-antiquark Fock component of a meson in the infrared, where mass is generated. Using the variational method and a set of interpolators that span a complete chiral basis we extract in a lattice QCD Monte Carlo simulation with two dynamical light quarks the orbital angular momentum and spin content of the rho-meson. We obtain in the infrared a simple 3S1 component as a leading component of the rho-meson with a small admixture of the 3D1 partial wave, in agreement with the SU(6) flavor-spin symmetry.

Angular momentum content of the rho-meson in lattice QCD

The variational method allows one to study the mixing of interpolators with different chiral transformation properties in the non-perturbatively determined physical state. It is then possible to define and calculate in a gauge-invariant manner the chiral as well as the partial wave content of the quark-antiquark component of a meson in the infrared, where mass is generated. Using a unitary transformation from the chiral basis to the LSJ basis one may extract a partial wave content of a meson. We present results for the ground state of the rho-meson using quenched simulations as well as simulations with two dynamical quarks, all for lattice spacings close to 0.15 fm. We point out that these results indicate a simple 3S1-wave composition of the rho-meson in the infrared, like in the SU(6) flavor-spin quark model.

Derivative sources in lattice spectroscopy of excited light-quark mesons

We construct efficient interpolating fields for lattice spectroscopy of mesons by applying covariant derivatives on Jacobi smeared quark sources. These interpolators are tested in a quenched calculation of excited mesons based on the variational method. We present results for pseudoscalar, scalar, vector and pseudovector mesons.

Meson spectroscopy with derivative quark sources

We present results for masses of light mesons obtained with the variational method using an enhanced basis of interpolating field operators with different quark smearings. The interpolators are constructed from Jacobi-smeared quarks of a Gaussian type as well as from derivative quark sources obtained by a covariant derivative acting on the Gaussian sources. For our analysis we use quenched gauge configurations with Chirally Improved quarks and the Luescher-Weisz gauge action on a 16^3 x 32 lattice with a = 0.148 fm. We discuss the influence of derivative sources on the overlap with excited states.

A simple toy model for effective restoration of chiral symmetry in excited hadrons

A simple solvable toy model exhibiting effective restoration of chiral symmetry in excited hadrons is constructed. A salient feature is that while physics of the low-lying states is crucially determined by the spontaneous breaking of chiral symmetry, in the high-lying states the effects of chiral symmetry breaking represent only a small correction. Asymptotically the states approach the regime where their properties are determined by the underlying unbroken chiral symmetry.

Excited hadrons on the lattice: Mesons

We present results for masses of excited mesons from quenched calculations using chirally improved quarks at pion masses down to 350 MeV. The key features of our analysis are the use of a matrix of correlators from various source and sink operators and a basis which includes quark sources with different spatial widths, thereby improving overlap with states exhibiting radial excitations.

Excited hadrons on the lattice: Baryons

We present results for masses of excited baryons from a quenched calculation with Chirally Improved quarks at pion masses down to 350 MeV. Our analysis of the correlators is based on the variational method. In order to provide a large basis set for spanning the physical states, we use interpolators with different Dirac structures and Jacobi smeared quark sources of different width. Our spectroscopy results for a wide range of ground state and excited baryons are discussed.

Variational method for lattice spectroscopy with ghosts

We discuss the variational method used in lattice spectroscopy calculations. In particular we address the role of ghost contributions which appear in quenched or partially quenched simulations and have a non-standard euclidean time dependence. We show that the ghosts can be separated from the physical states. Our result is illustrated with numerical data for the scalar meson.

Baryon spectroscopy with spatially improved quark sources

We study baryons on the lattice with a special focus on excited states. For that purpose we construct several interpolators which differ in their Dirac structure. These interpolators are built from Jacobi smeared quarks with different widths in order to allow for operators with improved spatial wavefunctions. We compute all cross correlations and use the variational method to determine which combinations of operators have best overlap with ground and excited states. Our approach yields promising results for the spin-1/2 baryons: nucleon, sigma, xi and lambda. For the spin-3/2 baryons, delta and omega, we obtain results which are consistent with results of other groups.

Masses of excited baryons from chirally improved quenched lattice QCD

Whereas ground state spectroscopy for quenched QCD is well understood, it is still a challenge to obtain results for excited hadron states. In our study we present results from a new approach for determining spatially optimized operators for lattice spectroscopy of excited hadrons. In order to be able to approach physical quark masses we work with the chirally improved Dirac operator, i.e., approximate Ginsparg-Wilson fermions. Since these are computationally expensive we restrict ourselves to a few quark sources. We use Jacobi smeared quark sources with different widths and combine them to construct hadron operators with different spatial wave functions. This allows us to identify the Roper state and other excited baryons, also in the strange sector.

Excited hadrons from improved interpolating fields

The calculation of quark propagators for Ginsparg-Wilson-type Dirac operators is costly and thus limited to a few different sources. We present a new approach for determining spatially optimized operators for lattice spectroscopy of excited hadrons. Jacobi smeared quark sources with different widths are combined to construct hadron operators with different spatial wave functions. We study the Roper state and excited rho and pion mesons.

Update of the Hagedorn mass spectrum

We present an update of the Hagedorn hypothesis of the exponential growth of the number of hadronic resonances with mass. We use the newest available experimental data for the non-strange mesons and baryons, as well as fill in some missing states according to the observation that the high-lying states form chiral multiplets. The results show, especially for the case of the mesons, that the Hagedorn growth continues with the increasing mass, with the new states lining up along the exponential growth.

Spatially improved operators for excited hadrons on the lattice

We present a new approach for determining spatially optimized operators that can be used for lattice spectroscopy of excited hadrons. Jacobi smeared quark sources with different widths are combined to construct hadron operators with different spatial wave functions. We use the variational method to determine those linear combinations of operators that have optimal overlap with ground and excited states. The details of the new approach are discussed and we demonstrate the power of the method using examples from quenched baryon and meson spectroscopy. In particular we study the Roper state and rho(1450) and discuss some physical implications of our tests.
