Conditions for semi-boundedness and discreteness of the spectrum to Schr\"odinger operator and some nonlinear PDEs

For Schr\"odinger operator $H=-\Delta+ V({\mathbf x})\cdot$, acting in the space $L_2(\mathbb R^d)\,(d\ge 3)$, necessary and sufficient conditions for semi-boundedness and discreteness of its spectrum.are obtained without assumption that the potential $V({\mathbf x})$ is bounded below. By reduction of the problem to investigation of existence of regular solutions for Riccati PDE necessary conditions for discreteness of the spectrum of operator $H$ are obtained under assumption that it is bounded below. These results are similar to ones obtained by author in \cite{Zel} for the one-dimensional case. Furthermore, sufficient conditions for the semi-boundedness and discreteness of the spectrum of $H$ are obtained in terms of a non-increasing rearrangement, mathematical expectation and standard deviation from the latter for positive part $V_+({\mathbf x})$ of the potential $V({\mathbf x})$ on compact domains that go to infinity, under certain restrictions for its negative part $V_-({\mathbf x})$. Choosing in an optimal way the vector field associated with difference between the potential $V({\mathbf x})$ and its mathematical expectation on the balls that go to infinity, we obtain a condition for semi-boundedness and discreteness of the spectrum for $H$ in terms of solutions of Neumann problem for nonhomogeneous $d/(d-1)$-Laplace equation. This type of optimization refers to a divergence constrained transportation problem.

Generic monodromy group of Riemann surfaces for inverses to entire functions of finite order

We consider the vector space $E_{\rho,p}$ of entire functions of finite order, whose types are not more than $p>0$, endowed with Frechet topology, which is generated by a sequence of weighted norms. We call a function $f\in E_{\rho,p}$ {\it typical} if it is surjective and has an infinite number critical points such that each of them is non-degenerate and all the values of $f$ at these points are pairwise different. We prove that the set of all typical functions contains a set which is $G_\delta$ and dense in $E_{\rho,p}$. Furthermore, we show that inverse to any typical function has Riemann surface whose monodromy group coincides with finitary symmetric group of permutations of naturals, which is unsolvable in the following strong sense: it does not have a normal tower of subgroups, whose factor groups are or abelian or finite. As a consequence from these facts and Topological Galois Theory, we obtain that generically (in the above sense) for $f\in E_{\rho,p}$ the solution of equation $f(w)=z$ cannot be represented via $z$ and complex constants by a finite number of the following actions: algebraic operations (i.e., rational ones and solutions of polynomial equations) and quadratures (in particular, superpositions with elementary functions).

Criterion of holomorphy with respect to a coupling constant of continuous functions of a perturbed self-adjoint operator

Sufficient and necessary conditions on the spectral measure of a self-adjoint operator $A$, acting in a Hilbert space, are obtained, under which for any continuous scalar function the operator function $ϕ(A+γB)$ is holomorphic with rspect to the coupling constant $γ$ in a neighborhood of $γ=0$, where $B$ is a self-adjoint operator. The sharpest results are obtained in the case where $B$ is a rank-one operator.

Conditions for discreteness of the spectrum to Schrödinger operator via non-increasing rearrangement, Lagrangian relaxation and perturbations

This work is a continuation of our previos paper, where for the Schrödinger operator $H=-Δ+ V(\e)\cdot$ $(V(\e)\ge 0)$, acting in the space $L_2(\R^d)\,(d\ge 3)$, some sufficient conditions for discreteness of its spectrum have been obtained on the base of well known Mazya -Shubin criterion and an optimization problem for a set function, which is an infinite-dimensional generalization of a binary linear programming problem. A sufficient condition for discreteness of the spectrum is formulated in terms of the non-increasing rearrangement of the potential $V(\e)$. Using the method of Lagrangian relaxation for this optimization problem, we obtain a sufficient condition for discreteness of the spectrum in terms of expectation and deviation of the potential. By means of suitable perturbations of the potential we obtain conditions for discreteness of the spectrum, covering potentials which tend to infinity only on subsets of cubes, whose Lebesgue measures tend to zero when the cubes go to infinity. Also the case where the operator $H$ is defined in the space $L_2(Ω)$ is considered ($Ω$ is an open domain in $\R^d$).

Conditions for discreteness of the spectrum to multi-dimensional Schrödinger operator

This work is a continuation of our previos paper \cite{Zel1}, where for the the Schrödinger operator $H=-Δ+ V(\e)\cdot$ $(V(\e)\ge 0)$, acting in the space $L_2(\R^d)\,(d\ge 3)$, some constructive sufficient conditions for discreteness of its spectrum have been obtained on the base of well known Mazya -Shubin criterion and an optimization problem for a set function. Using a {\it capacitary strong type inequality} of David Adams, the concept of {\it base polyhedron} for the harmonic capacity and some properties of Choquet integral by this capacity, we obtain more general sufficient conditions for discreteness of the spectrum of $H$ in terms of a repeated nonincreasing rearrangement of the function $Y(\e,\bt)=\sqrt{V(\e)}\frac{1}{|\e-\bt|^{d-2}}\sqrt{V(\bt)}$ on cubes that are going to infinity.

Conditions of discreteness of the spectrum for Schrödinger operator and some optimization problems for capacity and measures

For the the Schrödinger operator $H=-Δ+ V(x)\cdot$, acting in the space L_2(\R^d)\,(d\ge 3), with V(x)\ge 0 and V(\cdot)\in L_{1,loc}(\R^d), we obtain some constructive conditions for discreteness of its spectrum. Basing on the Mazya-Shubin criterion for discreteness of the spectrum of $H$ and using the isocapacity inequality and the concept of base polyhedron for the harmonic capacity, we have estimated from below the cost functional of an optimization problem, involved in this criterion, replacing a submodular constrain (in terms of the harmonic capacity) by a weaker but additive constrain (in terms of a measure). By this way we obtain an optimization problem, which can be considered as an infinite-dimensional analogue of the optimal covering problem. We have solved this problem for the case of a non-atomic measure. This approach enables us to obtain for the operator H some sufficient conditions for discreteness of its spectrum in terms of non-increasing rearrangements, with respect to measures from the base polyhedron, for some functions connected with the potential V(x). We construct some counterexamples, which permit to compare our results between themselves and with results of other authors.

Prescribing the mixed scalar curvature of a foliated Riemann-Cartan manifold

The mixed scalar curvature is one of the simplest curvature invariants of a foliated Riemannian manifold. We explore the problem of prescribing the mixed scalar curvature of a foliated Riemann-Cartan manifold by conformal change of the structure in tangent and normal to the leaves directions. Under certain geometrical assumptions and in two special cases: along a compact leaf and for a closed fibred manifold, we reduce the problem to solution of a leafwise elliptic equation, which has three stable solutions -- only one of them corresponds to the case of a foliated Riemannian manifold.

Virtual bound levels in a gap of the essential spectrum of the Schroedinger operator with a weakly perturbed periodic potential

In the space $L_2(R^d)$ we consider the Schrödinger operator $H_γ=-Δ+ V(x)\cdot+γW(x)\cdot$, where $V(x)=V(x_1,x_2,\dots,x_d)$ is a periodic function with respect to all the variables, $γ$ is a small real coupling constant and the perturbation $W(x)$ tends to zero sufficiently fast as $|x|\rightarrow\infty$. We study so called virtual bound levels of the operator $H_γ$, that is those eigenvalues of $H_γ$ which are born at the moment $γ=0$ in a gap $(λ_-,\,λ_+)$ of the spectrum of the unperturbed operator $H_0=-Δ+ V(x)\cdot$ from an edge of this gap while $γ$ increases or decreases. For a definite perturbation $(W(x)\ge 0)$ we investigate the number of such levels and an asymptotic behavior of them and of the corresponding eigenfunctions as $γ\rightarrow 0$ in two cases: for the case where the dispersion function of $H_0$, branching from an edge of $(λ_-,λ_+)$, is non-degenerate in the Morse sense at its extremal set and for the case where it has there a non-localized degeneration of the Morse-Bott type. In the first case in the gap there is a finite number of virtual eigenvalues if $d<3$ and we count the number of them, and in the second case in the gap there is an infinite number of ones, if the codimension of the extremal manifold is less than $3$. For an indefinite perturbation we estimate the multiplicity of virtual bound levels. Furthermore, we show that if the codimension of the extremal manifold is at least $3$ at both edges of the gap $(λ_-,\,λ_+)$, then under additional conditions there is a threshold for the birth of the impurity spectrum in the gap, that is $σ(H_γ)\cap(λ_-,\,λ_+)=\emptyset$ for a small enough |γ|.

The mixed Yamabe problem for harmonic foliations

The mixed scalar curvature of a foliated Riemannian manifold, i.e., an averaged mixed sectional curvature, has been considered by several geometers. We explore the Yamabe type problem: to prescribe the constant mixed scalar curvature for a foliation by a conformal change of the metric in normal directions only. For a harmonic foliation, we derive the leafwise elliptic equation and explore the corresponding nonlinear heat type equation. We assume that the leaves are compact submanifolds and the manifold is fibered instead of being foliated, and use spectral parameters of certain Schrödinger operator to find solution, which is attractor of the equation.

The mixed scalar curvature flow and harmonic foliations

We introduce and study the flow of metrics on a foliated Riemannian manifold $(M,g)$, whose velocity along the orthogonal distribution is proportional to the mixed scalar curvature, $\Sc_{\,\rm mix}$. The flow is used to examine the question: When a foliation admits a metric with a given property of $\Sc_{\,\rm mix}$ (e.g., positive or negative)\/? We observe that the flow preserves harmonicity of foliations and yields the Burgers type equation along the leaves for the mean curvature vector $H$ of orthogonal distribution. If $H$ is leaf-wise conservative, then its potential obeys the non-linear heat equation $\dt u=nΔ_\calf\,u +(nβ_{\mathcal D}+Φ)\,u+Ψ^\calf_1 u^{-1}-Ψ^\calf_2 u^{-3}$ with a leaf-wise constant $Φ$ and known functions $β_{\mathcal D}\ge0$ and $Ψ^\calf_i\ge0$. We study the asymptotic behavior of its solutions and prove that under certain conditions (in terms of spectral parameters of leaf-wise Schrödinger operator $\mathcal{H}_\calf=-Δ_\calf -β_{\mathcal D}\id$) there exists a unique global solution $g_t$, whose $\Sc_{\rm mix}$ converges exponentially as $t\to\infty$ to a leaf-wise constant. The metrics are smooth on $M$ when all leaves are compact and have finite holonomy group. Hence, in certain cases, there exist ${\mathcal D}$-conformal to $g$ metrics, whose $\Sc_{\rm mix}$ is negative or positive.

The mixed scalar curvature flow on a fiber bundle

We apply conformal flows of metrics restricted to the orthogonal distribution $D$ of a foliation to study the question: Which foliations admit a metric such that the leaves are totally geodesic and the mixed scalar curvature is positive? Our evolution operator includes the integrability tensor of $D$, and for the case of integrable orthogonal distribution the flow velocity is proportional to the mixed scalar curvature. We observe that the mean curvature vector $H$ of $D$ satisfies along the leaves the forced Burgers equation, this reduces to the linear Schrödinger equation, whose potential function is a certain "non-umbilicity" measure of $D$. On order to show convergence of the solution metrics $g_t$ as $t\to\infty$, we normalize the flow, and instead of a foliation consider a fiber bundle $π: M\to B$ of a Riemannian manifold $(M, g_0)$. In this case, if the "non-umbilicity" of $D$ is smaller in a sense then the "non-integrability", then the limit mixed scalar curvature function is positive. For integrable $D$, we give examples with foliated surfaces and twisted products.

On surfaces with a prescribed curvilinear projection of one field of principal directions

A class of surfaces-graphs in a Riemannian 3-space with a prescribed projection of one field of principal directions onto a surface $Π$ is considered. A problem of determination of such surfaces when both principal curvatures are given over a line in $Π$ is formulated and studied. The geometric problem is reduced to the Cauchy problem for quasilinear PDE's which, under certain conditions for data, are hyperbolic and admit a unique solution. It is shown that the parallel curved (PC) surfaces in space forms provide a special class of global solutions to the geometrical problem with weaker regularity assumptions. Such solutions may be found by an iteration function sequence.
