Fuzzy Spheres in Stringy Matrix Models: Quantifying Chaos in a Mixed Phase Space

We consider a truncation of the BMN matrix model to a configuration of two fuzzy spheres, described by two coupled non-linear oscillators dependent on the mass parameter $μ$. The classical phase diagram of the system generically ($μ\neq 0$) contains three equilibrium points: two centers and a center-saddle; as $μ\to 0$ the system exhibits a pitchfork bifurcation. We demonstrate that the system is exactly integrable in quadratures for $μ=0$, while for very large values of $μ$, it approaches another integrable point characterized by two harmonic oscillators. The classical phase space is mixed, containing both integrable islands and chaotic regions, as evidenced by the classical Lyapunov spectrum. At the quantum level, we explore indicators of early and late time chaos. The eigenvalue spacing is best described by a Brody distribution, which interpolates between Poisson and Wigner distributions; it dovetails, at the quantum level, the classical results and reemphasizes the notion that the quantum system is mixed. We also study the spectral form factor and the quantum Lyapunov exponent, as defined by out-of-time-ordered correlators. These two indicators of quantum chaos exhibit weak correlations with the Brody distribution. We speculate that the behavior of the system as $μ\to 0$ dominates the spectral form factor and the quantum Lyapunov exponent, making these indicators of quantum chaos less effective in the context of a mixed phase space.

The Giant Graviton Expansion from Bubbling Geometry

The superconformal index of half-BPS states in ${\cal N}=4$ supersymmetric Yang-Mills with gauge group $U(N)$ admits an expansion in terms of giant gravitons, ${\cal I}_N(q)={\cal I}_\infty(q) \sum\limits_{m=0}^\infty q^{mN}\hat{\mathcal I}_m(q)$, where $m$ is the number of giant gravitons. We derive this expansion directly in supergravity from the class of half-BPS solutions due to Lin, Lunin, and Maldacena in type IIB supergravity. The moduli space of these configurations can be quantized using covariant quantization methods. We review how this quantization leads to the graviton index, ${\cal I}_\infty(q)$, and present a modification that leads to the precise expression for the expansion in terms of giant gravitons. Our proposal provides a derivation of the giant graviton expansion directly in terms of supergravity degrees of freedom. We also comment on how to derive the expansion in terms of the effective Fermi droplet picture.

Universality in Logarithmic Temperature Corrections to Near-Extremal Rotating Black Hole Thermodynamics in Various Dimensions

The low-temperature thermodynamics of near-extremal rotating black holes has recently been revisited to incorporate one-loop contributions that are dominant in this regime. We discuss these quantum corrections to the gravitational path integral for asymptotically Anti de-Sitter black holes in four and five dimensions. In four dimensions we explicitly consider Kerr-AdS$_4$, Kerr-Newman-AdS$_4$ and the rotating black hole in ${\cal N}=4$ gauged supergravity with two scalars and two electric charges turned on. In five dimensions we explicitly address the asymptotically flat Myers-Perry black hole and the Kerr-AdS$_5$ black hole. In every case we find that tensor modes contribute $\frac{3}{2} \log T_{\rm Hawking}$ to the low-temperature thermodynamics. We identify the root cause of this universality in two facts: (i) the universal presence of a $SL(2,\mathbb{R})$ subgroup of isometries in the near-horizon geometry and (ii) a set of cancellations in the Lichnerowicz operator. We show that these two conditions hold for near-extremal black holes in asymptotically flat and asymptotically AdS spacetimes of various dimensions.

Non-topological logarithmic corrections in minimal gauged supergravity

We compute the logarithmic correction to the entropy of asymptotically AdS$_4$ black holes in minimal ${\cal N}=2$ gauged supergravity. We show that for extremal black holes the logarithmic correction computed in the near horizon geometry agrees with the result in the full geometry up to zero mode contributions, thus clarifying where the quantum degrees of freedom lie in AdS spacetimes. In contrast to flat space, we observe that the logarithmic correction for supersymmetric black holes can be non-topological in AdS as it is controlled by additional four-derivative terms other than the Euler density. The available microscopic data and results in 11d supergravity indicate that the full logarithmic correction is topological, which suggests that the topological nature of logarithmic corrections could serve as a diagnosis of whether a low-energy gravity theory admits an ultraviolet completion.

Beyond AdS$_2$/dCFT$_1$: Insertions in Two Wilson Loops

We consider two-point correlators of local operator insertions in a system of two Wilson-Maldacena loops in ${\cal N}=4$ supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory on both sides of the AdS/CFT correspondence. On the holographic side the correlator of two Wilson-Maldacena loops is given by a classical string world-sheet which in one phase connects two asymptotically AdS$_2$ regions and in the other phase is given by two disconnected AdS$_2$ caps; this configuration breaks supersymmetry as well as conformal invariance. We present a complete systematic account of the string world-sheet fluctuations, including the fermionic sector, and study the behavior of the holographic two-point correlators. On the field theory side we compute certain two-point correlators of local operator insertions by resumming sets of ladder diagrams. Our results demonstrate the efficacy of previously developed methods in tackling this non-conformal, non-susy regime.

$c$-functions in Higher-derivative Flows Across Dimensions

In the context of gravitational theories describing renormalization group flows across dimensions via AdS/CFT, we study the role of higher-derivative corrections to Einstein gravity. We use the Null Energy Condition to derive monotonicity properties of candidate holographic central charges formed by combinations of metric functions. We also implement an entropic approach to the characterization of the four-derivative flows using the Jacobson-Myers functional and demonstrate, under reasonable conditions, monotonicity of certain terms in the entanglement entropy via the appropriate generalization of the Ryu-Takayanagi prescription. In particular, we show that any flow from a higher dimensional theory to a holographic CFT$_2$ satisfies a type of monotonicity. We also uncover direct relations between NEC-motivated and entropic central charges.

Entanglement and Topology in RG Flows Across Dimensions: Caps, Bridges and Corners

We quantitatively address the following question: for a QFT which is partially compactified, so as to realize an RG flow from a $D$-dimensional CFT in the UV to a $d$-dimensional CFT in the IR, how does the entanglement entropy of a small spherical region probing the UV physics evolve as the size of the region grows to increasingly probe IR physics? This entails a generalization of spherical regions to setups without full Lorentz symmetry, and we study the associated entanglement entropies holographically. We find a tight interplay between the topology and geometry of the compact space and the evolution of the entanglement entropy, with universal transitions from `cap' through `bridge' and `corner' phases, whose features reflect the details of the compact space. As concrete examples we discuss twisted compactifications of 4d ${\cal N}=4$ SYM on $T^2$, $S^2$ and hyperbolic Riemann surfaces.

Cardy Expansion of 3d Superconformal Indices and Corrections to the Dual Black Hole Entropy

We consider the superconformal index of three-dimensional ${\cal N}=2$ supersymmetric field theories computed via localization on $S^1\times S^2$. We systematically develop an expansion where the ratio of the radius of $S^1$ to the radius of $S^2$ is taken very small -- a Cardy-like expansion. We emphasize the sub-leading structures in this Cardy-like expansion as well as their interplay with the large-$N$ limit for theories with gauge group of the form product of $U(N)$ factors. We demonstrate that taking the large-$N$ limit first leads to an expression for the index that only includes terms proportional to $1/β$ and powers of $β^{i=0,1,2}$ where $β$ is the ratio of radii. As we depart from the $β\to 0$ limit for finite $N$, we find indications of non-perturbative contributions of the form $e^{-1/β}$. For the ABJM theory we explore the implications of the Cardy-like expansion for corrections to the entropy of the rotating, electricallly charged, asymptotically AdS$_4$ dual black hole. Interestingly, we find that the corrections in $β$ to the entropy can be accounted for by appropriately shifting the electric charges and the angular momentum

$c$-Functions in Flows Across Dimensions

We explore the notion of $c$-functions in renormalization group flows between theories in different spacetime dimensions. We discuss functions connecting central charges of the UV and IR fixed point theories on the one hand, and functions which are monotonic along the flow on the other. First, using the geometric properties of the holographic dual RG flows across dimensions and the constraints from the null energy condition, we construct a monotonic holographic $c$-function and thereby establish a holographic $c$-theorem across dimensions. Second, we use entanglement entropies for two different types of entangling regions in a field theory along the RG flow across dimensions to construct candidate $c$-functions which satisfy one of the two criteria but not both. In due process we also discuss an interesting connection between corner contributions to the entanglement entropy and the topology of the compact internal space. As concrete examples for both approaches, we holographically study twisted compactifications of 4d $\mathcal N=4$ SYM and compactifications of 6d $\mathcal N=(2,0)$ theories.

Logarithmic Corrections to the Entropy of Rotating Black Holes and Black Strings in AdS$_5$

We investigate logarithmic corrections to the entropy of supersymmetric, rotating, asymptotically AdS$_5$ black holes and black strings. Within the framework of the AdS/CFT correspondence, the entropy of these black objects is determined, on the field theory side, by the superconformal index and the refined topologically twisted index of $\mathcal{N}=4$ supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory, respectively. We read off the logarithmic correction from those field-theoretic partition functions. On the gravity side, we take the near-horizon limit and apply the Kerr/CFT correspondence whose associated charged Cardy formula describes the degeneracy of states at subleading order and determines the logarithmic correction to the entropy. We find perfect agreement between these two approaches. Our results provide a window into precision microstate counting and demonstrate the efficacy of low-energy, symmetry-based approaches such as the Kerr/CFT correspondence for asymptotically AdS black objects under certain conditions.

Microscopic Entropy of Rotating Electrically Charged AdS$_4$ Black Holes from Field Theory Localization

We employ supersymmetric localization to determine the exact partition function of 3d $\mathcal{N}=2$ gauge theories on a background given by a round $S^2$ fibered over a circle and certain complexified background fields. The Coulomb branch localization locus includes monopole configurations, and the partition function reduces to a matrix model. We consider the partition function of the ABJM theory on this background as an explicit case. We verify that the large-$N$ limit of the ABJM theory partition function produces, in the Cardy limit, the entropy function of the dual rotating, electrically charged asymptotically AdS$_4$ supersymmetric black holes and thus provides a microscopic explanation for the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy.

Sub-leading Structures in Superconformal Indices: Subdominant Saddles and Logarithmic Contributions

We systematically study various sub-leading structures in the superconformal index of ${\cal N}=4$ supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory with SU($N$) gauge group. We concentrate in the superconformal index description as a matrix model of elliptic gamma functions and in the Bethe-Ansatz presentation. Our saddle-point approximation goes beyond the Cardy-like limit and we uncover various saddles governed by a matrix model corresponding to SU($N$) Chern-Simons theory. The dominant saddle, however, leads to perfect agreement with the Bethe-Ansatz approach. We also determine the logarithmic correction to the superconformal index to be $\log N$, finding precise agreement between the saddle-point and Bethe-Ansatz approaches in their respective approximations. We generalize the two approaches to cover a large class of 4d ${\cal N}=1$ superconformal theories. We find that also in this case both approximations agree all the way down to a universal contribution of the form $\log N$. The universality of this last result constitutes a robust signature of this ultraviolet description of asymptotically AdS$_5$ black holes and could be tested by low-energy IIB supergravity.

Retarded Green's Function from Rotating AdS Black Holes: Emergent CFT$_2$ and Viscosity

Using the AdS/CFT correspondence we consider the retarded Green's function in the background of rotating near-extremal AdS$_4$ black holes. Following the canonical AdS/CFT dictionary into the asymptotic boundary we get a CFT$_3$ result. We also take a new route and zoom in on the near-horizon region, blow up this region and show that it yields a CFT$_2$ result. We argue that the decoupling of the near-horizon region is akin to the decoupling of the near-throat region of a D3-brane, which led to the original formulation of the AdS/CFT correspondence, thus implying that the Kerr/CFT correspondence follows as a decoupling of the standard AdS/CFT correspondence applied to rotating black holes. As a byproduct, we compute the shear viscosity to entropy density ratio for the strongly coupled boundary CFT$_3$, and find that it violates the $1 / (4 π)$ bound.

The Bethe-Ansatz approach to the $\mathcal N=4$ superconformal index at finite rank

We investigate the Bethe-Ansatz (BA) approach to the superconformal index of ${\cal N}=4$ supersymmetric Yang-Mills with SU($N$) gauge group in the context of finite rank, $N$. We explicitly explore the role of the various types of solutions to the Bethe-Ansatz Equations (BAE) in recovering the exact index for $N=2,3$. We classify the BAE solutions as standard (corresponding to a freely acting orbifold $T^2/\mathbb{Z}_m \times \mathbb{Z}_n$) and non-standard. For $N=2$, we find that the index is fully recovered by standard solutions and displays an interesting pattern of cancellations. However, for $N\ge 3$, the standard solutions alone do not suffice to reconstruct the index. We present quantitative arguments in various regimes of fugacities that highlight the challenging role played by the continuous families of non-standard solutions.

Toward an Effective CFT$_2$ from $\mathcal{N}=4$ Super Yang-Mills and Aspects of Hawking Radiation

Using $\mathcal{N}=4$ supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory we recover important aspects of the near-extremal thermodynamics of AdS$_5$ black holes including both the outer and the inner horizons with their corresponding entropy and energy. This $\mathcal{N}=4$ supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory approach to black hole thermodynamics leads to an effective CFT$_2$ interpretation similar to the work by Callan and Maldacena. We corroborate this effective CFT$_2$ by implementing a particular near-horizon limit that geometrizes the Virasoro algebras as asymptotic symmetries. Using the effective CFT$_2$ picture, we discuss aspects of the Hawking radiation rate for a region of the near-extremal AdS$_5$ black hole quantum evolution.

Complement to thermodynamics of dyonic Taub-NUT-AdS spacetime

We examine the thermodynamics of Euclidean dyonic Taub-NUT/Bolt-AdS4 black holes for a variety of horizon geometries to understand how gauge field regularity conditions influence the thermodynamic relations. We find several distinct features that distinguish the NUT-charged case from its dyonic Reissner-Nordstrom counterpart. For the NUT solution, the gauge field vanishes at the horizon and so regularity is ensured. For the Bolt solution we find that the norm of the gauge field is required to vanish at the horizon in order to satisfy both regularity and the first law of thermodynamics. This regularity condition yields a constraint on the electric and magnetic charges and so reduces cohomogeneity of the system; for spherical horizons, the regularity condition removing the Misner string singularity further reduces cohomogeneity, We observe that bolt solutions with increasing electric charge have positive heat capacity, but upon turning on the magnetic charge to make the solution dyonic, we find that the properties of the uncharged one are retained, having both positive and negative heat capacity. We also study the extremal Bolt solution, finding that Misner string disappears at the horizon in the zero temperature limit. We find that the extremal solution has finite-temperature-like behaviour, with the electric potential playing a role similar to temperature.

Universal Logarithmic Behavior in Microstate Counting and the Dual One-loop Entropy of AdS$_4$ Black Holes

We numerically study the topologically twisted index of several three-dimensional supersymmetric field theories on a genus $g$ Riemann surface times a circle, $Σ_g\times S^1$. We show that for a large class of theories with leading term of the order $N^{3/2}$, where $N$ is generically the rank of the gauge group, there is a universal logarithmic correction of the form $\frac{g-1}{2} \log N$. We explain how this logarithmic subleading correction can be obtained as a one-loop effect on the dual supergravity theory for magnetically charged, asymptotically AdS$_4\times M^7$ black holes for a large class of Sasaki-Einstein manifolds, $M^7$. The matching of the logarithmic correction relies on a generic cohomological property of $M^7$ and it is independent of the black hole charges. We argue that our supergravity results apply also to rotating, electrically charged asymptotically AdS$_4\times M^7$ black holes. We present explicitly the quiver gauge theories and the gravity side corresponding to $M^7=N^{0,1,0}, V^{5,2}$ and $Q^{1,1,1}$.

Gravitational Cardy Limit and AdS Black Hole Entropy

We explore the gravitational implementation of the field theory Cardy-like limit recently used in the successful microstate countings of AdS black hole entropy in various dimensions. On the field theory side, the Cardy-like limit focuses on a particular scaling of conserved electric charges and angular momenta, and we first translate this scaling to the gravitational side by a limiting procedure on the black hole parameters. We note that the scaling naturally accompanies a near-horizon region for which these black hole solutions are greatly simplified. Applying the Kerr/CFT correspondence to the near-horizon region, we precisely reproduce the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy of asymptotically AdS$_{4, 5, 6, 7}$ BPS black holes. Our results explicitly provide a microscopic and universal low energy description for AdS black holes across various dimensions.
