On strong exceptional collections of line bundles of maximal length on Fano toric Deligne-Mumford stacks

We study strong exceptional collections of line bundles on Fano toric Deligne-Mumford stacks $\mathbb{P}_{\mathbfΣ}$ with rank of Picard group at most two. We prove that any strong exceptional collection of line bundles generates the derived category of $\mathbb{P}_{\mathbfΣ}$, as long as the number of elements in the collection equals the rank of the (Grothendieck) $K$-theory group of $\mathbb{P}_{\mathbfΣ}$.

Equivariant exceptional collections on smooth toric stacks

We study the bounded derived categories of torus-equivariant coherent sheaves on smooth toric varieties and Deligne-Mumford stacks. We construct and describe full exceptional collections in these categories. We also observe that these categories depend only on the PL homeomorphism type of the corresponding simplicial complex.

On stringy Euler characteristics of Clifford non-commutative varieties

It was shown by Kuznetsov that complete intersections of $n$ generic quadrics in ${\mathbb P}^{2n-1}$ are related by Homological Projective Duality to certain non-commutative (Clifford) varieties which are in some sense birational to double covers of ${\mathbb P}^{n-1}$ ramified over symmetric determinantal hypersurfaces. Mirror symmetry predicts that the Hodge numbers of the complete intersections of quadrics must coincide with the appropriately defined Hodge numbers of these double covers. We observe that these numbers must be different from the well-known Batyrev's stringy Hodge numbers, else the equality fails already at the level of Euler characteristics. We define a natural modification of stringy Hodge numbers for the particular class of Clifford varieties, and prove the corresponding equality of Euler characteristics in arbitrary dimension.

On mirrors of elliptically fibered K3 surfaces

We study a two-parameter family of K3 surfaces of (generic) Picard rank $18$ which is mirror to the $18$-dimensional family of elliptically fibered K3 surfaces with a section. Members of this family are given as compactifications of hypersurfaces in three dimensional algebraic torus given by equations $y^2+z+z^{-1} + x^3 + ax +b =0$ where $a$ and $b$ are the parameters of the family. It follows from previous work of Morrison that these surfaces are double covers of Kummer surfaces coming from products of elliptic curves, and we establish this connection explicitly. This in turn provides a description of the one-parameter families of K3 surfaces which are mirror to polarized K3 surfaces of Picard rank one. It has been brought to our attention that the results of this paper have already appeared in the literature. The appropriate references are added at the end of the introduction.

Optimality of the relaxed polar factors by a characterization of the set of real square roots of real symmetric matrices

We consider the problem to determine the optimal rotations $R \in {\rm SO}(n)$ which minimize $$W: {\rm SO}(n) \to \mathbb{R}^+_0,\quad W(R\,;D) := ||{\rm sym}(RD - 1)||^2$$ for a given diagonal matrix $D := {\rm diag}(d_1, ..., d_n) \in \mathbb{R}^{n \times n}$. The function $W$ subject to minimization is the reduced form of the Cosserat shear-stretch energy, which, in its general form, is a contribution in any geometrically nonlinear, isotropic and quadratic Cosserat micropolar (extended) continuum model. We characterize the critical points of the energy $W(R\,;D)$, determine the global minimizers and the global minimum. This proves the correctness of previously obtained formulae for the optimal Cosserat rotations in dimensions two and three. The key to the proof is a characterization of the entire set of (possibly non-symmetric) real matrix square roots of (possibly non-positive definite) real symmetric matrices which does not seem to be known in the literature.

Ulrich Bundles on Enriques Surfaces

We study Ulrich bundles and their moduli on unnodal Enriques surfaces. In particular, we prove that unnodal Enriques surfaces are of wild representation type by constructing moduli spaces of stable Ulrich bundles of arbitrary rank and arbitrarily large dimension.

On Clifford double mirrors of toric complete intersections

We present a construction of noncommutative double mirrors to complete intersections in toric varieties. This construction unifies existing sporadic examples and explains the underlying combinatorial and physical reasons for their existence.

The sum of squared logarithms inequality in arbitrary dimensions

We prove the \emph{sum of squared logarithms inequality} (SSLI) which states that for nonnegative vectors $x, y \in \mathbb{R}^n$ whose elementary symmetric polynomials satisfy $e_k(x)\le e_k(y)$ (for $1\le k < n$) and $e_n(x)=e_n(y)$, the inequality $\sum_i (\log x_i)^2 \le \sum_i (\log y_i)^2$ holds. Our proof of this inequality follows by a suitable extension to the complex plane. In particular, we show that the function $f\colon M\subseteq \mathbb{C}^n\to \mathbb{R}$ with $f(z)=\sum_i(\log z_i)^2$ has nonnegative partial derivatives with respect to the elementary symmetric polynomials of $z$. This property leads to our proof. We conclude by providing applications and wider connections of the SSLI.

Twistor geometry and warped product orthogonal complex structures

The twistor space of the sphere S^{2n} is an isotropic Grassmannian that fibers over S^{2n}. An orthogonal complex structure on a subdomain of S^{2n} (a complex structure compatible with the round metric) determines a section of this fibration with holomorphic image. In this paper, we use this correspondence to prove that any finite energy orthogonal complex structure on R^6 must be of a special warped product form, and we also prove that any orthogonal complex structure on R^{2n} that is asymptotically constant must itself be constant. We will also give examples defined on R^{2n} which have infinite energy, and examples of non-standard orthogonal complex structures on flat tori in complex dimension three and greater.

Absorption Probabilities for the Two-Barrier Quantum Walk

Let p_j^(n) be the probability that a Hadamard quantum walk, started at site j on the integer lattice {0,...,n}, is absorbed at 0. We give an explicit formula for p_j^(n). Our formula proves a conjecture of John Watrous, concerning an empirically observed linear fractional recurrence relation for the numbers p_1^(n).

On the conjecture of King for smooth toric Deligne-Mumford stacks

We construct full strong exceptional collections of line bundles on smooth toric Fano Deligne-Mumford stacks of Picard number at most two and of any Picard number in dimension two. It is hoped that the approach of this paper will eventually lead to the proof of the existence of such collections on all smooth toric nef-Fano Deligne-Mumford stacks.

Threefolds of order one in the six-quadric

Consider the smooth quadric Q_6 in P^7. The middle homology group H_6(Q_6,Z) is two-dimensional with a basis given by two classes of linear subspaces. We classify all threefolds of bidegree (1,p) inside Q_6.

The Pfaffian-Grassmannian derived equivalence

We argue that there exists a derived equivalence between Calabi-Yau threefolds obtained by taking dual hyperplane sections (of the appropriate codimension) of the Grassmannian G(2, 7) and the Pfaffian Pf(7). The existence of such an equivalence has been conjectured by physicists for almost ten years, as the two families of Calabi-Yau threefolds are believed to have the same mirror. It is the first example of a derived equivalence between Calabi-Yau threefolds which are provably non-birational.

Self-self-dual spaces of polynomials

A space of polynomials V of dimension 7 is called self-dual if the divided Wronskian of any 6-subspace is in V. A self-dual space V has a natural inner product. The divided Wronskian of any isotropic 3-subspace of V is a square of a polynomial. We call V self-self-dual if the square root of the divided Wronskian of any isotropic 3-subspace is again in V. We show that the self-self-dual spaces have a natural non-degenerate skew-symmetric 3-form defined in terms of Wronskians. We show that the self-self-dual spaces correspond to G_2-populations related to the Bethe Ansatz of the Gaudin model of type G_2 and prove that a G_2-population is isomorphic to the G_2 flag variety.
