On the distribution function of the information speed in computer network

We review a study of the Internet traffic properties. We analyze under what conditions the reported results could be reproduced. Relations of results of passive measurements and those of modelling are also discussed. An example of the first-order phase transitions in the Internet traffic is presented.

On the quality of random number generators with taps

Recent exact analytical results developed for the random number generators with taps are reported. These results are applicable to a wide class of algorithms, including random walks, cluster algorithms, Ising models. Practical considerations on the improvement of the quality of random numbers are discussed as well.

The critical amplitude ratio of the susceptibility in the random-site two-dimensional Ising model

We present a new way of probing the universality class of the site-diluted two-dimensional Ising model. We analyse Monte Carlo data for the magnetic susceptibility, introducing a new fitting procedure in the critical region applicable even for a single sample with quenched disorder. This gives us the possibility to fit simultaneously the critical exponent, the critical amplitude and the sample dependent pseudo-critical temperature. The critical amplitude ratio of the magnetic susceptibility is seen to be independent of the concentration $q$ of the empty sites for all investigated values of $q\le 0.25$. At the same time the average effective exponent $γ_{eff}$ is found to vary with the concentration $q$, which may be argued to be due to logarithmic corrections to the power law of the pure system. This corrections are canceled in the susceptibility amplitude ratio as predicted by theory. The central charge of the corresponding field theory was computed and compared well with the theoretical predictions.

Quenched bond dilution in two-dimensional Potts models

We report a numerical study of the bond-diluted 2-dimensional Potts model using transfer matrix calculations. For different numbers of states per spin, we show that the critical exponents at the random fixed point are the same as in self-dual random-bond cases. In addition, we determine the multifractal spectrum associated with the scaling dimensions of the moments of the spin-spin correlation function in the cylinder geometry. We show that the behaviour is fully compatible with the one observed in the random bond case, confirming the general picture according to which a unique fixed point describes the critical properties of different classes of disorder: dilution, self-dual binary random-bond, self-dual continuous random bond.

Number of bonds in the site-diluted lattices: sampling and fluctuations

We have calculated analytically the mean value and the variance of the number of bonds on the lattices of dimension $d$ for the given occupation of sites. We consider both kinds of site occupation: with the fixed concentration $n_s$ of occupied sites and with the probability $p$ for a site to be occupied. We found that the variance are smaller in the former case and not depends from the dimensionality of the hypercubic lattice. Whereas in the last case it grows with the space dimensionality. The ratio of variances are quite different in the limit of $p\to 1$. Finally, we demonstrate the relevance of the level of fluctuations on the precision of energy calculations for the Ising model in the Monte Carlo simulations.

The Cluster Processor: New Results

We present a progress report on the Cluster Processor, a special-purpose computer system for the Wolff simulation of the three-dimensional Ising model, including an analysis of simulation results obtained thus far. These results allow, within narrow error margins, a determination of the parameters describing the phase transition of the simple-cubic Ising model and its universality class. For an improved determination of the correction-to-scaling exponent, we include Monte Carlo data for systems with nearest-neighbor and third-neighbor interactions in the analysis.

Incipient Spanning Clusters in Square and Cubic Percolation

The analysis of extensive numerical data for the percolation probabilities of incipient spanning clusters in two dimensional percolation at criticality are presented. We developed an effective code for the single-scan version of the Hoshen-Kopelman algorithm. We measured the probabilities on the square lattice forming samples of rectangular strips with widths from 8 to 256 sites and lengths up to 3200 sites. At total of more than $10^{15}$ random numbers are generated for the sampling procedure. Our data confirm the proposed exact formulaes for the probability exponents conjectured recently on the base of 2D conformal field theory. Some preliminary results for 3D percolation are also discussed.

The RANLUX generator: resonances in a random walk test

Using a recently proposed directed random walk test, we systematically investigate the popular random number generator RANLUX developed by Luescher and implemented by James. We confirm the good quality of this generator with the recommended luxury level. At a smaller luxury level (for instance equal to 1) resonances are observed in the random walk test. We also find that the lagged Fibonacci and Subtract-with-Carry recipes exhibit similar failures in the random walk test. A revised analysis of the corresponding dynamical systems leads to the observation of resonances in the eigenvalues of Jacobi matrix.

Cluster Monte Carlo: Scaling of Systematic Errors in the 2D Ising Model

We present an extensive analysis of systematic deviations in Wolff cluster simulations of the critical Ising model, using random numbers generated by binary shift registers. We investigate how these deviations depend on the lattice size, the shift-register length, and the number of bits correlated by the production rule. They appear to satisfy scaling relations.

Probability of Incipient Spanning Clusters in Critical Square Bond Percolation

The probability of simultaneous occurence of at least k spanning clusters has been studied by Monte Carlo simulations on the 2D square lattice at the bond percolation threshold $p_c=1/2$. It is found that the probability of k and more Incipient Spanning Clusters (ISC) has the values $P(k>1) \approx 0.00658(3)$ and $P(k>2) \approx 0.00000148(21)$ provided that the limit of these probabilities for infinite lattices exists. The probability $P(k>3)$ of more than three ISC could be estimated to be of the order of 10^{-11} and is beyond the possibility to compute a such value by nowdays computers. So, it is impossible to check in simulations the Aizenman law for the probabilities when $k>>1$. We have detected a single sample with 4 ISC in a total number of about 10^{10} samples investigated. The probability of single event is 1/10 for that number of samples.

Critical region of the random bond Ising model

We describe results of the cluster algorithm Special Purpose Processor simulations of the 2D Ising model with impurity bonds. Use of large lattices, with the number of spins up to $10^6$, permitted to define critical region of temperatures, where both finite size corrections and corrections to scaling are small. High accuracy data unambiguously show increase of magnetization and magnetic susceptibility effective exponents $β$ and $γ$, caused by impurities. The $M$ and $χ$ singularities became more sharp, while the specific heat singularity is smoothed. The specific heat is found to be in a good agreement with Dotsenko-Dotsenko theoretical predictions in the whole critical range of temperatures.

Critical Point Correlation Function for the 2D Random Bond Ising Model

High accuracy Monte Carlo simulation results for 1024*1024 Ising system with ferromagnetic impurity bonds are presented. Spin-spin correlation function at a critical point is found to be numerically very close to that of a pure system. This is not trivial since a critical temperature for the system with impurities is almost two times lower than pure Ising $T_c$. Finite corrections to the correlation function due to combined action of impurities and finite lattice size are described.
