Dynamics of axial separation in long rotating drums

We propose a continuum description for the axial separation of granular materials in a long rotating drum. The model, operating with two local variables, concentration difference and the dynamic angle of repose, describes both initial transient traveling wave dynamics and long-term segregation of the binary mixture. Segregation proceeds through ultra-slow logarithmic coarsening.

Communication with Chaos over Band-Limited Channels

Methods of communications using chaotic signals use an ability of a chaos generator (encoder) and matched response system (decoder) to behave identically despite the instability of chaotic oscillations. Chaotic oscillations cover a wide spectral domain and can efficiently mask an information signal scrambled by the chaotic encoder. At the same time the wide spectrum poses intrinsic difficulties in the chaotic decoding if the chaotic signal is transmitted over real communication channels with limited bandwidth. We address this problem both numerically and experimentally. Two alternative ways to improve communication with chaos over band-limited channels are investigated. The first method employs a matching filter in the decoder which compensates channel distortions of the transmitted signal. This modification does not change the individual dynamics of chaotic systems in the synchronous state however the information signal injected into the driving system, breaks the symmetry between encoder and decoder and therefore exact recovery is impossible. We show that this approach has limited ability for synchronization of chaotic encoder. The second approach does not use adaptive compensation but relies on the design of chaotic oscillators which produce narrow-band chaotic waveforms.

Spiral Dynamics in Pattern-Forming Systems: Mean Flow Effects

Mean flow effects are discussed for two different pattern-forming systems: Rayleigh-Benard convection and Faraday instability in viscous fluid. In both systems spirals are observed in certain parameter regions. In the Rayleigh-Benard convection, the spiral core instability and subsequent generation of up- and downflow hexagons are shown to occur due to the mean flow generated by the curved rolls near the core. In the Faraday instability, the mean flow which is generated by rapidly decaying surface waves near the wall, causes wavenumber frustration which leads to a rigid-body spiral rotation. In both cases we use phenomenological Swift-Hohenberg-type equations for the order parameter coupled to a large-scale mean flow. Numerical simulations are compared to recently reported experimental results.

Large-Scale Flow and Spiral Core Instability in Rayleigh-Benard Convection

The spiral core instability, observed in large aspect ratio Rayleigh-Benard convection, is studied numerically in the framework of the Swift-Hohenberg equation coupled to a large-scale flow. It is shown that the instability leads to non-trivial core dynamics and is driven by the self-generated vorticity. Moreover, the recently reported transition from spirals to hexagons near the core is shown to occur only in the presence of a non-variational nonlinearity, and is triggered by the spiral core instability. Qualitative agreement between the simulations and the experiments is demonstrated.

Penta-Hepta Defect Motion in Hexagonal Patterns

Structure and dynamics of penta-hepta defects in hexagonal patterns is studied in the framework of coupled amplitude equations for underlying plane waves. Analytical solution for phase field of moving PHD is found in the far field, which generalizes the static solution due to Pismen and Nepomnyashchy (1993). The mobility tensor of PHD is calculated using combined analytical and numerical approach. The results for the velocity of PHD climbing in slightly non-optimal hexagonal patterns are compared with numerical simulations of amplitude equations. Interaction of penta-hepta defects in optimal hexagonal patterns is also considered.
