Generalized Gibbs ensemble in integrable lattice models

The generalized Gibbs ensemble (GGE) was introduced ten years ago to describe observables in isolated integrable quantum systems after equilibration. Since then, the GGE has been demonstrated to be a powerful tool to predict the outcome of the relaxation dynamics of few-body observables in a variety of integrable models, a process we call generalized thermalization. This review discusses several fundamental aspects of the GGE and generalized thermalization in integrable systems. In particular, we focus on questions such as: which observables equilibrate to the GGE predictions and who should play the role of the bath; what conserved quantities can be used to construct the GGE; what are the differences between generalized thermalization in noninteracting systems and in interacting systems mappable to noninteracting ones; why is it that the GGE works when traditional ensembles of statistical mechanics fail. Despite a lot of interest in these questions in recent years, no definite answers have been given. We review results for the XX model and for the transverse field Ising model. For the latter model, we also report original results and show that the GGE describes spin-spin correlations over the entire system. This makes apparent that there is no need to trace out a part of the system in real space for equilibration to occur and for the GGE to apply. In the past, a spectral decomposition of the weights of various statistical ensembles revealed that generalized eigenstate thermalization occurs in the XX model (hard-core bosons). Namely, eigenstates of the Hamiltonian with similar distributions of conserved quantities have similar expectation values of few-spin observables. Here we show that generalized eigenstate thermalization also occurs in the transverse field Ising model.

Matrix-product-state method with a dynamical local basis optimization for bosonic systems out of equilibrium

We present a method for simulating the time evolution of one-dimensional correlated electron-phonon systems which combines the time-evolving block decimation algorithm with a dynamical optimization of the local basis. This approach can reduce the computational cost by orders of magnitude when boson fluctuations are large. The method is demonstrated on the nonequilibrium Holstein polaron by comparison with exact simulations in a limited functional space and on the scattering of an electronic wave packet by local phonon modes. Our study of the scattering problem reveals a rich physics including transient self-trapping and dissipation.

Relaxation dynamics of the Holstein polaron

Keeping the full quantum nature of the problem we compute the relaxation time of the Holstein polaron after it was driven far from the equilibrium by a strong oscillatory pulse. Just after the pulse the polaron's kinetic energy increases and subsequently exhibits relaxation type decrease with simultaneous emission of phonons. In the weak coupling regime partial tunneling of the electron from the polaron self-potential is observed. The inverse relaxation time is for small values of electron-phonon coupling $λ$ linear with $λ$, while it deviates downwards from the linear regime at $λ\gtrsim 0.1/ω_0$. The imaginary part of the equilibrium self energy shows good agreement with the inverse relaxation time obtained from nonequilibrium simulations.

Quantum Dynamics of a Driven Correlated System Coupled to Phonons

Nonequilibrium interplay between charge, spin and lattice degrees of freedom on a square lattice is studied for a single charge carrier doped in the t-J-Holstein model. In the presence of an uniform electric field we calculate the qusistationary state. With increasing electron-phonon (e-ph) coupling the carrier mobility decreases, however, we find increased steady state current due to e-ph coupling in the regime of negative differential resistance. We explore the distribution of absorbed energy between the spin and the phonon subsystem. For model parameters as relevant for cuprates, the majority of the gained energy flows into the spin subsystem.

Nonequilibrium quantum dynamics of a charge carrier doped into a Mott insulator

We study real-time dynamics of a charge carrier introduced into undoped Mott insulator propagating under a constant electric field F on the t-J ladder and square lattice. We calculate quasistationary current. In both systems adiabatic regime is observed followed by the positive differential resistivity (PDR) at moderate fields where carrier mobility is determined. Quantitative differences between ladder and 2-dimensional (2D) system emerge when at large fields both systems enter negative differential resistivity (NDR) regime. In the ladder system Bloch-like oscillations prevail, while in 2D the current remains finite, proportional to 1/F. The crossover between PDR and NDR regime in 2D is accompanied by a change of the spatial structure of the propagating spin polaron.

Nonequilibrium dynamics of the Holstein polaron driven by external electric field

This work represents a fundamental study of a Holstein polaron in one dimension driven away from the ground state by a constant electric field. Taking fully into account quantum effects we follow the time-evolution of the system from its ground state as the constant electric field is switched on at t = 0, until it reaches a steady state. At weak electron phonon coupling (EP) the system experiences damped Bloch oscillations (BO) characteristic for noninteracting electron band. An analytic expression of the steady state current is proposed in terms of weak EP coupling and large electric field. For moderate values of EP coupling the oscillations are almost critically damped and the system reaches the steady state after a short time. In the strong coupling limit weakly damped BO, consistent with nearly adiabatic evolution within the polaron band, persist up to extremely large electric fields. A traveling polaron under the influence of the electric field leaves behind a trail of phonon excitations absorbing the excess energy gained from the electric field. The shape of the traveling polaron is investigated in details.

Emergence of states in the phonon spectral function of the Holstein polaron below and above the one-phonon continuum

We investigate the low-energy properties of the Holstein polaron through calculation of the q-dependent phonon spectral function using an improved exact-diagonalization technique, defined over a variational Hilbert space. We perform a comprehensive study of the low-energy excitations of the polaron. Beside the energy range, where the additional phonon excitation is unbound, we observe separate coherent peaks which correspond to bound and antibound states of a polaron and additional phonon quanta. These novel states can be observed for intermediate and strong electron-phonon coupling strengths, as well as below and above the unbound one-phonon excitation spectrum. A detailed investigation of their properties is presented. We find good agreement between the phonon spectral function obtained from the first-order strong-coupling perturbation theory and numerical results.

Gain of the kinetic energy of bipolarons in the t-J-Holstein model based on electron-phonon coupling

With increasing electron-phonon coupling as described within the t-J-Holstein model, bipolaron kinetic energy is lowered in comparison with that of the polaron. This effect is accompanied with "undressing" of bipolaron from lattice degrees of freedom. Consequently, the effective bipolaron mass becomes smaller than the polaron mass. Magnetic as well as lattice degrees of freedom cooperatively contribute to formation of spin-lattice bipolarons.

Bipolaron in the t-J model coupled to longitudinal and transverse quantum lattice vibrations

We explore the influence of two different polarizations of quantum oxygen vibrations on the spacial symmetry of the bound magnetic bipolaron in the context of the t-J model by using exact diagonalization within a limited functional space. Quadratic electron phonon coupling to transverse polarization stabilizes d-wave symmetry. The existence of a magnetic background is essential for the formation of a d-wave bipolaron state. With increasing linear electron phonon coupling to longitudinal polarization the symmetry of a d-wave bipolaron state changes to a p-wave. Bipolaron develops a large anisotropic effective mass.
