Topological properties and Majorana Multiplicity in Zigzag Kitaev Chain

We investigate the spectral and topological properties of a zigzag Kitaev chain constructed from two diagonally coupled one dimensional Kitaev chains with a zero and finite superconducting pairing phase difference. Using a Bogoliubov-de Gennes formulation, we analyze the energy spectrum, distribution of Majorana zero modes (MZMs), the quasi-particle dispersion, and the winding number, respectively. For a zero phase difference, the resulting energy spectrum shows topological phases with two, four MZMs, and trivial regions. The phases of gap closure determine the topological phase boundaries. In particular, for the phase difference between $ϕ=π$, the degeneracy of MZMs is partially lifted, leading to modified topological phases compared to the case $ϕ=0$. The topological and trivial phase boundaries are further confirmed by evaluating the quasi-particle dispersion and the topological invariant, namely the winding number. We show that the zigzag Kitaev chain contributes independently to the total winding number $ν= 1$ and $2$, giving rise to distinct topological phases that support two and four MZMs. The $ν= 0$ gives rise to a trivial region. The energy spectrum of systems corroborates the analytical phase boundaries and reveals characteristics associated with hybridization, enabling us to obtain the complete phase diagram of the zigzag model. Our results establish the zigzag Kitaev chain as a minimal platform for engineering MZM quantum computations, with potential applications in the study of topological phases and Majorana based qubit physics.

Majorana bound states in a hybrid Kitaev ladder with long-range pairing

We investigate an inter-leg coupled hybrid Kitaev ladder composed of two parallel superconducting chains with distinct pairing interactions. The upper chain of the ladder hosts conventional $p$-wave pairing, while the lower chain exhibits long-range pairing that decays algebraically with distance. We demonstrate that the mutual influence of long-range pairing exponent, chemical potential, and inter-leg coupling strength gives rise to a rich topological phase diagram characterized by multiple Majorana zero modes and massive Dirac modes. In particular, we show that the inter-leg coupling renormalizes the effective energy scales, leading to a systematic shift of the topological phase boundaries and enabling controlled tuning of the Majorana modes. Furthermore, we identify a transition from a two Majorana zero mode phase to a phase encapsulating four Majorana zero modes, as the long-range pairing exponent is varied. This transition is accompanied by a crossover regime in which Majorana zero modes coexist with massive Dirac modes, reflecting hybridization between edge and bulk excitations. This ladder thus provides a minimal and attractive platform for realizing the impact of a long-range pairing on topological phases. Our results highlight the potential of long-range hybrid systems for engineering tunable topological states relevant for quantum information applications.

Quantum memory and scrambling from the perspective of a classical neural network

Entropic uncertainty relations are universal quantifiers of fundamental uncertainties of quantum measurements and are widely discussed in the quantum metrology literature. Quantum memory is a phenomenon related to the specific type of quantum correlations that allows for reducing fundamental uncertainties of quantum measurements. In the present work, the modified concept of quantum memory for time-dependent problems is proposed. We compare the time-dependent formulation of quantum memory with the out-of-time-ordered correlator (OTOC). Quantum memory is a rigorous mathematical concept that requires demanding calculations. Thus, until now, quantum memory has been discussed mainly for simple model systems and stationary problems. In the present work, we demonstrate that quantum memory can also be studied for realistic and physically relevant systems, e.g., the atomic helical spin chain, as well as the emergence and propagation of quantum correlations in time. We found that quantum memory manifests faster oscillations in time than OTOC and does not equilibrate. Furthermore, an artificial neural network is trained and asked to predict results for OTOC and quantum memory. These results show that quantum memory is more sensitive than OTOC in terms of broken inversion symmetry and the nonreciprocal effect.

Dynamics of Majorana zero modes across hybrid Kitaev chain

The Kitaev chain has been extensively explored in the context of uniform couplings, with studies focusing either on purely nearest-neighbor interactions or on systems dominated by long-range superconducting pairing. Building on these investigations, we introduce a hybrid Kitaev chain in which the lattice is partitioned into two segments: the left segment comprises nearest-neighbor couplings, while the right segment incorporates long-range pairing. To probe the role of the interface, we study two scenarios: a decoupled (suppressed hopping) case, where the segments are isolated, and a coupled case, where they are connected via interface hopping that enables tunneling. Using this setup, we investigate the behavior of Majorana zero modes at the interface between the two segments, finding that in the decoupled case, Majorana zero modes remain sharply localized at the left segment chain edges while massive Dirac modes remain in right segment chain edges, with their energies and localization strongly dependent on the long-range pairing exponent. Introducing a finite interface coupling enables transfer of Majorana zero modes from the edges of the left segment to those of the right segment of the chain. We characterize this dynamics by the fidelity of state transfer, dynamical rotation, and inverse participation ratio. We show the signature of Majorana zero mode transfer across the interface by the spatiotemporal profile of the probability distribution of the time evolved state.

Prethermal Floquet time crystals in chiral multiferroic chains and applications as quantum sensors of AC fields

We study the emergence of prethermal Floquet Time Crystal (pFTC) in disordered chiral multiferroic chains. The model is an extension of the usual periodically driven nearest-neighbor disordered Heisenberg chain, with additional next-nearest-neighbor Heisenberg couplings and DMI interactions due to external magnetic and electric couplings. We derive the phase diagram of the model, characterizing the magnetization, entanglement, and coherence dynamics of the system along the extended interactions. In addition, we explore the application of the pFTC as quantum sensors of AC fields. The sensor performance to estimate small AC fields is quantified through the quantum Fisher information (QFI) measure. The sensor offers several advantages as compared to those composed of non-interacting spins due to its intrinsic robustness, long coherent interrogation time, and many-body correlations. Specifically, the sensor can overcome the standard quantum limit ($\rm{SQL} \sim N t^2$) during the prethermal regime, reaching an optimum performance at the pFTC lifetime $t^*$, where the $\rm{QFI}/Nt^{*^2} \sim N^α$ with $α> 0$, scaling superlinarly with the number of spins. Different from \text{full} FTCs, the prethermal lifetime does not diverge in the thermodynamic limit, nevertheless it can be increasingly long with tuning system parameters.

Quantum information diode based on a magnonic crystal

Exploiting the effect of nonreciprocal magnons in a system with no inversion symmetry, we propose a concept of a quantum information diode, {\it i.e.}, a device rectifying the amount of quantum information transmitted in the opposite directions. We control the asymmetric left and right quantum information currents through an applied external electric field and quantify it through the left and right out-of-time-ordered correlation (OTOC). To enhance the efficiency of the quantum information diode, we utilize a magnonic crystal. We excite magnons of different frequencies and let them propagate in opposite directions. Nonreciprocal magnons propagating in opposite directions have different dispersion relations. Magnons propagating in one direction match resonant conditions and scatter on gate magnons. Therefore, magnon flux in one direction is damped in the magnonic crystal leading to an asymmetric transport of quantum information in the quantum information diode. A quantum information diode can be fabricated from an yttrium iron garnet (YIG) film. This is an experimentally feasible concept and implies certain conditions: low temperature and small deviation from the equilibrium to exclude effects of phonons and magnon interactions. We show that rectification of the flaw of quantum information can be controlled efficiently by an external electric field and magnetoelectric effects.

Quantum discord and entropic measures of two relativistic fermions

In the present work, we study the interplay between relativistic effects and quantumness in the system of two relativistic fermions. In particular, we explore entropic measures of quantum correlations and quantum discord before and after application of a boost and subsequent Wigner rotation. We also study the positive operator-valued measurements (POVM) invasiveness before and after the boosts. While the relativistic principle is universal and requires Lorentz invariance of quantum correlations in the entire system, we have found specific partitions where quantum correlations stored in particular subsystems are not invariant. We calculate quantum discords corresponding of the states before and after applying a boost, and observe that the state gains extra discord after the boost. When analyzing the invasiveness of the POVMs, we have found that the POVM applied to the initial entangled state reduces the discord to zero. However, discord of the boosted state survives after the same POVM. Thus we conclude that the quantum discord generated by Lorentz boost is robust concerning the protective POVM, while the measurement exerts an invasive effect on the discord of the initial state. Finally, we discuss potential implementation of the ideas of this work using top quarks as a benchmark scenario.

Switching of the information backflow between a helical spin system and non-Markovian bath

The dissipative dynamics of the spin chain coupled to the non-Markovian magnonic reservoir was studied. The chirality of the chain is formed due to the magnetoelectric coupling. We explored the sign of the trace distance derivative and found the alternating positive/negative periods in system's time evolution. The negative sign is associated with the flow of information from the system to the bath and decrease in states distinguishability, while the positive sign is related to the flow of the information in the opposite direction and increase in distinguishability. We found the distinct effect of the applied electric and magnetic fields. While the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction and external electric field lead to reshuffling of the periods, the applied magnetic field leads to the swift positive-negative transitions. Thus, in the helical quantum rings coupled to the non-Markovian magnonic baths, it is possible to control the directions of information flow through the external fields.

Quantum teleportation by utilizing helical spin chains for sharing entanglement

We develop a new protocol for sharing entanglement (one ebit) between two parties using the natural dynamics of helical multiferroic spin chains. We introduce a novel kicking scheme of the electric field for enhancing the teleportation fidelity in our protocol that works in the presence of an appropriate choice of parameters. We also investigate the effect of a common spin environment causing decoherence in the entanglement sharing channel. We compare the results to that of XXZ and XX models subject to a similar entanglement sharing protocol and find that the helical multiferroic chain with the kicking scheme provides a better singlet fraction. We show that the kicking scheme in conjugation with the optimized parameters enhances the fidelity of teleportation even in the presence of impurities and/or decoherence. The advantage of the kicking scheme shown in the impurity cases is an important result to be useful in a realizable setup of helical multiferroic spin chain.

A Comprehensible Review: Magnonic Magnetoelectric Coupling in Ferroelectric/ Ferromagnetic Composites

Composite materials consisting of coupled magnetic and ferroelectric layers hold the promise for new emergent properties such as controlling magnetism with electric fields. Obviously, the interfacial coupling mechanism plays a crucial role and its understanding is the key for exploiting this material class for technological applications. This short review is focused on the magnonic-based magnetoelectric coupling that forms at the interface of a metallic ferromagnet with a ferroelectric insulator. After analyzing the physics behind this coupling, the implication for the magnetic, transport, and optical properties of these composite materials is discussed. Furthermore, examples for the functionality of such interfaces are illustrated by the electric field controlled transport through ferroelectric/ferromagnetic tunnel junctions, the electrically and magnetically controlled optical properties, and the generation of electromagnon solitons for the use as reliable information carriers.

Entanglement balance of quantum $(e,2e)$ scattering processes

The theory of quantum information constitutes the functional value of the quantum entanglement, i.e., quantum entanglement is essential for high fidelity of quantum protocols, while fundamental physical processes behind the formation of quantum entanglement are less relevant for practical purposes. In the present work, we explore physical mechanisms leading to the emergence of quantum entanglement in the initially disentangled system. In particular, we analyze spin entanglement of outgoing electrons in a nonrelativistic quantum $(e,2e)$ collision on a target with one active electron. Our description exploits the time-dependent scattering formalism for typical conditions of scattering experiments, and contrary to the customary stationary formalism operates with realistic scattering states. We quantify the spin entanglement in the final scattering channel through the pair concurrence and express it in terms of the experimentally measurable spin-resolved $(e,2e)$ triple differential cross sections. Besides, we consider Bell's inequality and inspect the regimes of its violation in the final channel. We address both the pure and the mixed initial spin state cases and uncover kinematical conditions of the maximal entanglement of the outgoing electron pair. The numerical results for the pair concurrence, entanglement of formation, and violation of Bell's inequality obtained for the $(e,2e)$ ionization process of atomic hydrogen show that the entangled electron pairs indeed can be formed in the $(e,2e)$ collisions even with spin-unpolarized projectile and target electrons in the initial channel. The positive entanglement balance---the difference between entanglements of the initial and final electron pairs---can be measured in the experiment.

Spin-flavor oscillations of ultrahigh-energy cosmic neutrinos in interstellar space: The role of neutrino magnetic moments

A theoretical analysis of possible influence of neutrino magnetic moments on the propagation of ultrahigh-energy cosmic neutrinos in the interstellar space is carried out under the assumption of two-neutrino mixing. The exact solution of the effective equation for neutrino evolution in the presence of a magnetic field and matter is obtained, which accounts for four neutrino species corresponding to two different flavor states with positive and negative helicities. Using most stringent astrophysical bounds on the putative neutrino magnetic moment, probabilities of neutrino flavor and spin oscillations are calculated on the basis of the obtained exact solution. Specific patterns of spin-flavor oscillations are determined for neutrino-energy values characteristic of, respectively, the cosmogenic neutrinos, the Greisen-Zatsepin-Kuz'min (GZK) cutoff, and well above the cutoff.

Positive-Negative Birefringence in Multiferroic Layered Metasurfaces

We uncover and identify the regime for a magnetically and ferroelectrically controllable negative refraction of light traversing multiferroic, oxide-based metastructure consisting of alternating nanoscopic ferroelectric (SrTiO$_2$) and ferromagnetic (Y$_3$Fe$_2$(FeO$_4$)$_3$, YIG) layers. We perform analytical and numerical simulations based on discretized, coupled equations for the self-consistent Maxwell/ferroelectric/ferromagnetic dynamics and obtain a biquadratic relation for the refractive index. Various scenarios of ordinary and negative refraction in different frequency ranges are analyzed and quantified by simple analytical formula that are confirmed by full-fledge numerical simulations. Electromagnetic-waves injected at the edges of the sample are propagated exactly numerically. We discovered that for particular GHz frequencies, waves with different polarizations are characterized by different signs of the refractive index giving rise to novel types of phenomena such as a positive-negative birefringence effect, and magnetically controlled light trapping and accelerations.

Functionalizing Fe adatoms on Cu(001) as a nanoelectromechanical system

This study demonstrates how the spin quantum dynamics of a single Fe atom adsorbed on Cu(001) can be controlled and manipulated by the vibrations of a nearby copper tip attached to a nano cantilever by virtue of the dynamic magnetic anisotropy. The magnetic properties of the composite system are obtained from \emph{ab initio} calculations in completely relaxed geometries and turned out to be dependent considerably on the tip-iron distance that changes as the vibrations set in. The level populations, the spin dynamics interrelation with the driving frequency, as well as quantum information related quantities are exposed and analyzed.

Swift thermal steering of domain walls in ferromagnetic MnBi stripes

We predict a fast domain wall (DW) motion induced by a thermal gradient across a nanoscopic ferromagnetic stripe of MnBi. The driving mechanism is an exchange torque fueled by magnon accumulation at the DWs. Depending on the thickness of the sample, both hot-to-cold and cold-to-hot DW motion directions are possible. The finding unveils an energy efficient way to manipulate DWs as an essential element in magnetic information processing such as racetrack memory.

Quantum Otto heat engine based on a multiferroic chain working substance

We study a quantum Otto engine operating on the basis of a helical spin- 1/2 multiferroic chain with strongly coupled magnetic and ferroelectric order parameters. The presence of a finite spin chirality in the working substance enables steering of the cycle by an external electric field that couples to the electric polarization. We observe a direct connection between the chirality, the entanglement and the efficiency of the engine. An electric-field dependent threshold temperature is identified above which the pair correlations in the system, as quantified by the thermal entanglement, diminish. In contrast to the pair correlations, the collective many-body thermal entanglement is less sensitive to the electric field, and in the high temperature limit converges to a constant value. We also discuss the correlations between the threshold temperature of the pair entanglement, the spin chirality and the minimum of the fidelities in relation to the electric and magnetic fields. The efficiency of the quantum Otto cycle shows a saturation plateau with increasing electric field amplitude.

Self-Chaotization in Coupled Optical Waveguides

We consider theoretically two coupled optical waveguides with a varying barrier height along the waveguides direction. The barrier could be constructed by the elongated island with a reduced refractive index (which acts as a potential barrier), such that in the middle region it splits a waveguide into two weakly coupled parts. It is predicted by numerical simulations and analytical consideration that the presence of some imperfection of the system parameters can cause splitting of injected laser beam and one will observe two intensity maximums at the output, while for small imperfections the input and output beam intensity distributions will be the same. The switching between two regimes could be achieved changing spectral width of the beam or refractive index of the island. This nontrivial effect is explained by possibility of transitions between the different eigenstates of the system in the region of large potential barrier heights. The mentioned effect could be used for all-optical readdressing and filtering purposes.
