Stochastic dynamics and pattern formation of geometrically confined skyrmions

Ensembles of magnetic skyrmions in confined geometries are shown to exhibit thermally driven motion on two different time scales. The intrinsic fluctuating dynamics ($t\sim 1~$ps) is governed by short-range symmetric and antisymmetric exchange interactions, whereas the long-time limit ($t\gtrsim10\,$ns) is determined by the coaction of skyrmion-skyrmion-repulsion and the system's geometry. Micromagnetic simulations for realistic island shapes and sizes are performed and analyzed, indicating the special importance of skyrmion dynamics at finite temperatures. We demonstrate how the competition between skyrmion mobility and observation time directly affects the addressability of skyrmionic bits, which is a key challenge on the path of developing skyrmion-based room-temperature applications. The presented quasiparticle Monte Carlo approach offers a computationally efficient description of the diffusive motion of skyrmion ensembles in confined geometries, like racetrack memory setups.

Magnetism and in-gap states of 3d transition metal atoms on superconducting Re

Magnetic atoms on heavy-element superconducting substrates are potential building blocks for realizing topological superconductivity in one- and two-dimensional atomic arrays. Their localized magnetic moments induce so-called Yu-Shiba-Rusinov (YSR) states inside the energy gap of the substrate. In the dilute limit, where the electronic states of the array atoms are only weakly coupled, proximity of the YSR states to the Fermi energy is essential for the formation of topological superconductivity in the band of YSR states. Here, we reveal via scanning tunnel spectroscopy and ab initio calculations of a series of 3d transition metal atoms (Mn, Fe, Co) adsorbed on the heavy-element superconductor Re that the increase of the Kondo coupling and sign change in magnetic anisotropy with d-state filling is accompanied by a shift of the YSR states through the energy gap of the substrate and a crossing of the Fermi level. The uncovered systematic trends enable the identification of the most promising candidates for the realization of topological superconductivity in arrays of similar systems.

Effective damping enhancement in noncollinear spin structures

Damping mechanisms in magnetic systems determine the lifetime, diffusion and transport properties of magnons, domain walls, magnetic vortices, and skyrmions. Based on the phenomenological Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert equation, here the effective damping parameter in noncollinear magnetic systems is determined describing the linewidth in resonance experiments or the decay parameter in time-resolved measurements. It is shown how the effective damping can be calculated from the elliptic polarization of magnons, arising due to the noncollinear spin arrangement. It is concluded that the effective damping is larger than the Gilbert damping, and it may significantly differ between excitation modes. Numerical results for the effective damping are presented for the localized magnons in isolated skyrmions, with parameters based on the Pd/Fe/Ir(111) model-type system.

Localized spin waves in isolated $kπ$ skyrmions

The localized magnon modes of isolated $kπ$ skyrmions on a field-polarized background are analyzed based on the Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert equation within the terms of an atomistic classical spin model, with system parameters based on the Pd/Fe biatomic layer on Ir(111). For increasing skyrmion order $k$ a higher number of excitation modes are found, including modes with nodes in the radial eigenfunctions. It is shown that at low fields $2π$ and $3π$ skyrmions are destroyed via a burst instability connected to a breathing mode, while $1π$ skyrmions undergo an elliptic instability. At high fields all $kπ$ skyrmions collapse due to the instability of a breathing mode. The effective damping parameters of the spin waves are calculated in the low Gilbert damping limit, and they are found to diverge in the case of the lowest-lying modes at the burst and collapse instabilities, but not at the elliptic instability. It is shown that the breathing modes of $kπ$ skyrmions may become overdamped at higher Gilbert damping values.

Theory of high-resolution tunneling spin transport on a magnetic skyrmion

Tunneling spin transport characteristics of a magnetic skyrmion are described theoretically in magnetic scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). The spin-polarized charge current in STM (SP-STM) and tunneling spin transport vector quantities, the longitudinal spin current and the spin transfer torque, are calculated in high spatial resolution within the same theoretical framework. A connection between the conventional charge current SP-STM image contrasts and the magnitudes of the spin transport vectors is demonstrated that enables the estimation of tunneling spin transport properties based on experimentally measured SP-STM images. A considerable tunability of the spin transport vectors by the involved spin polarizations is also highlighted. These possibilities and the combined theory of tunneling charge and vector spin transport pave the way for gaining deep insight into electric-current-induced tunneling spin transport properties in SP-STM and to the related dynamics of complex magnetic textures at surfaces.

Controlled creation and stability of kπ-skyrmions on a discrete lattice

We determine sizes and activation energies of kπ-skyrmions on a discrete lattice using the Landau- Lifshitz-Gilbert equation and the geodesic nudged elastic band method. The employed atomic material parameters are based on the skyrmionic material system Pd/Fe/Ir(111). We find that the critical magnetic fields for collapse of the 2π-skyrmion and 3π-skyrmion are very close to each other and considerably lower than the critical field of the 1π-skyrmion. The activation energy protecting the structures does not strictly decrease with increasing k as it can be larger for the 3π-skyrmion than for the 2π-skyrmion depending on the applied magnetic field. Furthermore, we propose a method of switching the skyrmion order k by a reversion of the magnetic field direction in samples of finite size.

Spin-polarized scanning tunneling microscopy characteristics of skyrmionic spin structures exhibiting various topologies

The correct identification of topological magnetic objects in experiments is an important issue. In the present work we report on the characterization of metastable skyrmionic spin structures with various topological charges ($Q=-3,-2,-1,0,+1,+2$) in the (Pt$_{1-x}$Ir$_{x}$)Fe/Pd(111) ultrathin magnetic film by performing spin-polarized scanning tunneling microscopy (SP-STM) calculations. We find that an out-of-plane magnetized tip already results in distinguished SP-STM contrasts for the different skyrmionic structures corresponding to their symmetries. Our work also establishes an understanding of the relationship between in-plane SP-STM contrasts and skyrmionic topologies through an investigation of the variation of the in-plane angle between the spins along the perimeter of the structures, which can be characterized by the local vorticity or linear density of the winding number. For spin structures exhibiting a uniform sign of the local vorticity throughout the whole skyrmionic area, we demonstrate that (i) $|Q|$ can be determined from a single SP-STM image taken by any in-plane magnetized tip, and (ii) an in-plane tip magnetization rotation provides the sign of $Q$ independently of the sign of the effective spin polarization in the tunnel junction. We also discuss cases where the local vorticity is changing sign. Finally, by increasing the Ir content of the PtIr overlayer, we find an appearing secondary outer ring in-plane SP-STM contrast that is indicative of attractive skyrmions or antiskyrmions.

Temperature scaling of the Dzyaloshinsky-Moriya interaction in the spin wave spectrum

The temperature scaling of the micromagnetic Dzyaloshinsky-Moriya exchange interaction is calculated for the whole range of temperature. We use Green's function theory to derive the finite-temperature spin wave spectrum of ferromagnetic systems described by a classical atomistic spin model Hamiltonian. Within this model, we find universal expressions for the temperature scaling not only of the Dzyaloshinsky-Moriya interaction but also of the Heisenberg exchange stiffness and the single-ion anisotropy. In the spirit of multiscale models, we establish a clear connection between the atomistic interactions and the temperature-dependent coefficients in the spin wave spectrum and in the micromagnetic free energy functional. We demonstrate that the corrections to mean-field theory or the random phase approximation for the temperature scaling of Dzyaloshinsky-Moriya and Heisenberg exchange interactions assume very similar forms. In the presence of thermal fluctuations and Dzyaloshinsky-Moriya interaction an anisotropy-like term emerges in the spin wave spectrum which, at low temperature, increases with temperature, in contrast to the decreasing single-ion anisotropy. We evaluate the accuracy of the theoretical method by comparing it to the spin wave spectrum calculated from Monte Carlo simulations.

Formation and stability of metastable skyrmionic spin structures with various topologies in an ultrathin film

We observe metastable localized spin configurations with topological charges ranging from $Q=-3$ to $Q=2$ in a (Pt$_{0.95}$Ir$_{0.05}$)/Fe bilayer on Pd$(111)$ surface by performing spin dynamics simulations, using a classical Hamiltonian parametrized by ab initio calculations. We demonstrate that the frustration of the isotropic exchange interactions is responsible for the creation of these various types of skyrmionic structures. The Dzyaloshinsky--Moriya interaction present due to the breaking of inversion symmetry at the surface energetically favors skyrmions with $Q=-1$, distorts the shape of the other objects, and defines a preferred orientation for them with respect to the underlying lattice.

Temperature-induced increase of spin spiral periods

Spin-polarized scanning tunneling microscopy investigations reveal a significant increase of the magnetic period of spin spirals in three-atomic-layer-thick Fe films on Ir(111), from about 4nm at 8K to about 65nm at room temperature. We attribute this considerable influence of temperature on the magnetic length scale of noncollinear spin states to different exchange interaction coefficients in the different Fe layers. We thus propose a classical spin model which reproduces the experimental observations and in which the crucial feature is the presence of magnetically coupled atomic layers with different interaction strengths. This model might also apply for many other systems, especially magnetic multilayers.

Skyrmions with attractive interactions in an ultrathin magnetic film

We determined the parameters of a classical spin Hamiltonian describing an Fe monolayer on Pd(111) surface with a Pt_{1-x}Ir_{x} alloy overlayer from ab initio calculations. While the ground state of the system is ferromagnetic for x=0.00, it becomes a spin spiral state as Ir is intermixed into the overlayer. Although the Dzyaloshinsky-Moriya interaction is present in the system, we will demonstrate that the frustrated isotropic exchange interactions play a prominent role in creating the spin spiral state, and these frustrated couplings lead to an attractive interaction between skyrmions at short distances. Using spin dynamics simulations, we show that under these conditions the individual skyrmions form clusters, and that these clusters remain stable at finite temperature.

Complex magnetic phase diagram and skyrmion lifetime in an ultrathin film from atomistic simulations

We determined the magnetic B-T phase diagram of PdFe bilayer on Ir(111) surface by performing Monte Carlo and spin dynamics simulations based on an effective classical spin model. The parameters of the spin model were determined by ab initio methods. At low temperatures we found three types of ordered phases, while at higher temperatures, below the completely disordered paramagnetic phase, a large region of the phase diagram is associated with a fluctuation-disordered phase. Within the applied model, this state is characterized by the presence of skyrmions with finite lifetime. According to the simulations, this lifetime follows the Arrhenius law as a function of temperature.

Magnetic phase diagram of an Fe monolayer on W(110) and Ta(110) surfaces based on ab initio calculations

We present detailed investigations of the magnetic properties of an Fe monolayer on W and Ta (110) surfaces based on the ab initio screened Korringa-Kohn-Rostoker method. By calculating tensorial exchange coupling coefficients, the ground states of the systems are determined using atomistic spin dynamics simulations. Different types of ground states are found in the systems as a function of relaxation of the Fe layer. In case of W(110) substrate this is reflected in a reorientation of the easy axis from in-plane to out-of-plane. For Ta(110) a switching appears from the ferromagnetic state to a cycloidal spin spiral state, then to another spin spiral state with a larger wave vector and, for large relaxations, a rotation of the normal vector of the spin spiral is found. Classical Monte Carlo simulations indicate temperature-induced transitions between the different magnetic phases observed in the Fe/Ta(110) system. These phase transitions are analyzed both quantitatively and qualitatively by finite-temperature spin wave theory.
