Enhanced squeezing for quantum gravimetry in a Bose-Einstein condensate with focussing

Free-fall atom interferometers offer a powerful platform for accurate, absolute gravitational sensing. Szigeti et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 125, 100402 (2020)] recently proposed a quantum-enhanced scheme that uses a spin-squeezed Bose-Einstein condensate as an input state to improve the phase sensitivity of the interferometer. The spin squeezing, generated via one-axis twisting interactions, was limited by condensate expansion. Here we present an improved state preparation in which a sudden trapping potential -- a delta kick -- is initially applied to focus the condensate. The resulting increase in density enhances the one-axis-twisting interactions and produces greater spin squeezing. Using multimode truncated-Wigner simulations, we quantify the performance of the interferometer and find that, for an optimal kick strength, the phase sensitivity surpasses the standard quantum limit by a factor of $\sim 20$. This represents a fourfold improvement over the original scheme without the delta kick and is well captured by a two-mode approximation.

Polar core vortex dynamics in disc-trapped homogeneous spin-1 Bose-Einstein condensates

We study the dynamics of polar core vortices in the easy plane phase of an atomic spin-1 Bose-Einstein condensate confined in a two-dimensional disc potential. A single vortex moves radially outward due to its interaction with background flows that arise from boundary effects. Pairs of opposite sign vortices, which tend to attract, move either radially inward or outward, depending on their strength of attraction relative to boundary effects. Pairs of same sign vortices repel. Spiral vortex dynamics are obtained for same-sign pairs in the presence of a finite axial magnetization. We quantify the dynamics for a range of realistic experimental parameters, finding that the vortex dynamics are accelerated with increasing quadratic Zeeman energy, consistent with existing studies in planar systems.

Dynamics of Polar-Core Spin Vortices in Inhomogeneous Spin-1 Bose-Einstein Condensates

In the easy-plane phase, a ferromagnetic spin-1 Bose-Einstein condensate is magnetized in a plane transverse to the applied Zeeman field. This phase supports polar-core spin vortices (PCVs), which consist of phase windings of transverse magnetization. Here we show that spin-changing collisions cause a PCV to accelerate down density gradients in an inhomogeneous condensate. The dynamics is well-described by a simplified model adapted from scalar systems, which predicts the dependence of the dynamics on trap tightness and quadratic Zeeman energy. In a harmonic trap, a PCV accelerates radially to the condensate boundary, in stark contrast to the azimuthal motion of vortices in a scalar condensate. In a trap that has a local potential maximum at the centre, the PCV exhibits oscillations around the trap centre, which persist for a remarkably long time. The oscillations coincide with the emission and reabsorption of axial spin waves, which reflect off the condensate boundary.

A damped point-vortex model for polar-core spin vortices in a ferromagnetic spin-1 Bose-Einstein condensate

Ferromagnetic spin-1 Bose-Einstein condensates in the broken-axisymmetric phase support polar-core spin vortices (PCVs), which are intimately linked to the nonequilibrium dynamics of the system. For a purely transversely magnetized system, the Turner point-vortex model predicts that PCVs behave like massive charged particles interacting via a two-dimensional Coulomb potential. We test the accuracy of the Turner model for two oppositely charged PCVs, via comparisons with numerical simulations. While the bare Turner model shows discrepancies with our numerical results, we find that a simple rescaling of the PCV mass gives much better agreement. This can be explained via a phenomenological damping arising from coupling to modes extrinsic to the point-vortex phase space. We also identify the excitations produced following PCV annihilation, which help elucidate recent phase ordering results. We extend the Turner model to cases where the system is magnetized both transversally and axially, identifying a crossover to scalar vortex dynamics for increasing external Zeeman field.

Coarsening dynamics of an isotropic ferromagnetic superfluid

In zero magnetic field the ground state manifold of a ferromagnetic spin-1 condensate is SO(3) and exhibits $\mathbb{Z}_2$ vortices as topological defects. We investigate the phase ordering dynamics of this system after being quenched into this ferromagnetic phase from a zero temperature unmagnetized phase. Following the quench, we observe the ordering of both magnetic and gauge domains. We find that these domains grow diffusively, i.e. with domain size $L(t)\sim t^{1/2}$, and exhibit dynamic scale invariance. The coarsening dynamics progresses as $\mathbb{Z}_2$ vortices annihilate, however we find that at finite energy a number of these vortices persist in small clumps without influencing magnetic or gauge order. We consider the influence of a small non-zero magnetic field, which reduces the ground state symmetry, and show that this sets a critical length scale such that when the domains reach this size the system dynamically transitions in order parameter and scaling behaviour from an isotropic to an anisotropic ferromagnetic superfluid.

Dynamics of polar-core spin vortices in a ferromagnetic spin-1 Bose-Einstein condensate

A ferromagnetic spin-1 condensate supports polar-core spin vortices (PCVs) in the easy-plane phase. We derive a model for the dynamics of these PCVs using a variational Lagrangian approach. The PCVs behave as massive charged particles interacting under the two dimensional Coulomb interaction, with the mass arising from interaction effects within the vortex core. We compare this model to numerical simulations of the spin-1 Gross-Pitaevskii equations and find semi-quantitative agreement. In addition, the numerical results suggest that the PCV core couples to spin waves, and this affects the PCV dynamics even far from the core. We identify areas of further research that could extend the model of PCV dynamics presented here.

Coarsening and thermalisation properties of a quenched ferromagnetic spin-1 condensate

We examine the dynamics of a quasi-two-dimensional spin-1 condensate in which the quadratic Zeeman energy q is suddenly quenched to a value where the system has a ferromagnetic ground state. There are two distinct types of ferromagnetic phases, i.e. a range of q values where the magnetization prefers to be in the direction of the external field (easy-axis), and a range of q values where it prefers to be transverse to the field (easy-plane). We study the quench dynamics for a variety of q values and show that there is a single dynamical critical exponent to characterize the scale invariant domain growth for each ferromagnetic phase. For both quenches we give simple analytic models that capture the essential scale invariant dynamics, and correctly predict the exponents. Because the order parameter for each phase is different, the natures of the domains and the relevant topological defects in each type of coarsening is also different. To explore these differences we characterize the fractal dimension of the domain walls, and the relationship of polar-core spin vortices to the domains in the easy-plane phase. Finally, we consider how the energy liberated from the quench thermalizes in the easy-axis quench. We show that local equilibrium is established in the spin waves on moderate time scales, but continues to evolve as the domains anneal.

Universal coarsening dynamics of a quenched ferromagnetic spin-1 condensate

We demonstrate that a quasi-two-dimensional spin-1 condensate quenched to a ferromagnetic phase undergoes universal coarsening in its late time dynamics. The quench can be implemented by a sudden change in the applied magnetic field and, depending on the final value, the ferromagnetic phase has easy-axis (Ising) or easy-plane (XY) symmetry, with different dynamical critical exponents. Our results for the easy-plane phase reveal a fractal domain structure and the crucial role of polar-core spin vortices in the coarsening dynamics.

A magneto-optic modulator with unit quantum effciency

We propose a device for the reversible and quiet conversion of microwave photons to optical sideband photons, that can reach 100% quantum effciency. The device is based on an erbium doped crystal placed in both an optical and microwave resonator. We show that effcient conversion can be achieved so long as the product of the optical and microwave cooperativity factors can be made large. We argue achieving this regime is feasible with current technology and we discuss a possible implementation.
