Perceptual Quality Assessment of Omnidirectional Audio-visual Signals

Omnidirectional videos (ODVs) play an increasingly important role in the application fields of medical, education, advertising, tourism, etc. Assessing the quality of ODVs is significant for service-providers to improve the user's Quality of Experience (QoE). However, most existing quality assessment studies for ODVs only focus on the visual distortions of videos, while ignoring that the overall QoE also depends on the accompanying audio signals. In this paper, we first establish a large-scale audio-visual quality assessment dataset for omnidirectional videos, which includes 375 distorted omnidirectional audio-visual (A/V) sequences generated from 15 high-quality pristine omnidirectional A/V contents, and the corresponding perceptual audio-visual quality scores. Then, we design three baseline methods for full-reference omnidirectional audio-visual quality assessment (OAVQA), which combine existing state-of-the-art single-mode audio and video QA models via multimodal fusion strategies. We validate the effectiveness of the A/V multimodal fusion method for OAVQA on our dataset, which provides a new benchmark for omnidirectional QoE evaluation. Our dataset is available at https://github.com/iamazxl/OAVQA.

Dynamical-Corrected Nonadiabatic Geometric Quantum Computation

Recently, nonadiabatic geometric quantum computation has been received great attentions, due to its fast operation and intrinsic error resilience. However, compared with the corresponding dynamical gates, the robustness of implemented nonadiabatic geometric gates based on the conventional single-loop scheme still has the same order of magnitude due to the requirement of strict multi-segment geometric controls, and the inherent geometric fault-tolerance characteristic is not fully explored. Here, we present an effective geometric scheme combined with a general dynamical-corrected technique, with which the super-robust nonadiabatic geometric quantum gates can be constructed over the conventional single-loop and two-loop composite-pulse strategies, in terms of resisting the systematic error, i.e., $σ_x$ error. In addition, combined with the decoherence-free subspace (DFS) coding, the resulting geometric gates can also effectively suppress the $σ_z$ error caused by the collective dephasing. Notably, our protocol is a general one with simple experimental setups, which can be potentially implemented in different quantum systems, such as Rydberg atoms, trapped ions and superconducting qubits. These results indicate that our scheme represents a promising way to explore large-scale fault-tolerant quantum computation.

A spectral-timing study of the inner flow geometry in MAXI J1535--571 with $Insight$-HXMT and NICER

We have performed a spectral-timing analysis on the black hole X-ray binary MAXI J1535--571 during its 2017 outburst, with the aim of exploring the evolution of the inner accretion flow geometry. X-ray reverberation lags are observed in the hard-intermediate state (HIMS) and soft-intermediate state (SIMS) of the outburst. During the HIMS, the characteristic frequency of the reverberation lags $ν_0$ (the frequency at which the soft lag turns to zero in the lag-frequency spectra) increases when the spectrum softens. This reflects a reduction of the spatial distance between the corona and accretion disc, when assuming the measured time lags are associated with the light travel time. We also find a strong correlation between $ν_0$ and type-C Quasi Periodic Oscillation (QPO) centroid frequency $ν_{QPO}$, which can be well explained by the Lense-Thirring (L-T) precession model under a truncated disk geometry. Despite the degeneracy in the spectral modellings, our results suggest that the accretion disc is largely truncated in the low hard state (LHS), and moves inward as the spectrum softens. Combine the spectral modelling results with the $ν_0$ - $ν_{QPO}$ evolution, we are inclined to believe that this source probably have a truncated disk geometry in the hard state.

$L^p$-Poincaré inequalities on nested fractals

We prove on some nested fractals scale invariant $L^p$-Poincaré inequalities on metric balls in the range $1 \le p \le 2$. Our proof is based on the development of the local $L^p$-theory of Korevaar-Schoen-Sobolev spaces on fractals using heat kernel methods. Applications to scale invariant Sobolev inequalities and to the study of maximal functions and Hajłasz-Sobolev spaces on fractals are given. Results are illustrated and further developed in the case of the Vicsek set.

Near-Field Beam Management for Extremely Large-Scale Array Communications

Extremely large-scale arrays (XL-arrays) have emerged as a promising technology to achieve super-high spectral efficiency and spatial resolution in future wireless systems. The large aperture of XL-arrays means that spherical rather than planar wavefronts must be considered, and a paradigm shift from far-field to near-field communications is necessary. Unlike existing works that have mainly considered far-field beam management, we study the new near-field beam management for XL-arrays. We first provide an overview of near-field communications and introduce various applications of XL-arrays in both outdoor and indoor scenarios. Then, three typical near-field beam management methods for XL-arrays are discussed: near-field beam training, beam tracking, and beam scheduling. We point out their main design issues and propose promising solutions to address them. Moreover, other important directions in near-field communications are also highlighted to motivate future research.

Cramér-Rao Bounds of Near-Field Positioning Based on Electromagnetic Propagation Model

The adoption of large-scale antenna arrays at high-frequency bands is widely envisioned in the beyond 5G wireless networks. This leads to the near-field regime where the wavefront is no longer planar but spherical, bringing new opportunities and challenges for communications and positioning. In this paper, we improve the near-field positioning technology from the classical spherical wavefront model (SWM) to the more accurate and true electromagnetic propagation model (EPM). A generic near-field positioning model with different observation capabilities for three electric field types (vector, scalar, and overall scalar electric field) is developed based on the complete EPM. For these three observed electric field types, the Cramér-Rao bound (CRB) is adopted to evaluate the achievable estimation accuracy. The expressions of the CRBs for different electric field observations are derived by combining electromagnetic propagation concepts with estimation theory. Closed-form expressions can be further obtained as the terminal is assumed to be on the central perpendicular line (CPL) of the receiving antenna surface. Moreover, the above discussions are extended to the system with multiple receiving antennas. In this case, the CRBs using various electric field types are derived, and the effect of different numbers of receiving antennas is deeply investigated. Numerical results are provided to quantify the CRBs and validate the analytical results. Also, the impact of different system parameters, including electric field type, wavelength, size of the receiving antenna, and number of antennas, is evaluated.

Scene as Occupancy

Human driver can easily describe the complex traffic scene by visual system. Such an ability of precise perception is essential for driver's planning. To achieve this, a geometry-aware representation that quantizes the physical 3D scene into structured grid map with semantic labels per cell, termed as 3D Occupancy, would be desirable. Compared to the form of bounding box, a key insight behind occupancy is that it could capture the fine-grained details of critical obstacles in the scene, and thereby facilitate subsequent tasks. Prior or concurrent literature mainly concentrate on a single scene completion task, where we might argue that the potential of this occupancy representation might obsess broader impact. In this paper, we propose OccNet, a multi-view vision-centric pipeline with a cascade and temporal voxel decoder to reconstruct 3D occupancy. At the core of OccNet is a general occupancy embedding to represent 3D physical world. Such a descriptor could be applied towards a wide span of driving tasks, including detection, segmentation and planning. To validate the effectiveness of this new representation and our proposed algorithm, we propose OpenOcc, the first dense high-quality 3D occupancy benchmark built on top of nuScenes. Empirical experiments show that there are evident performance gain across multiple tasks, e.g., motion planning could witness a collision rate reduction by 15%-58%, demonstrating the superiority of our method.

A Generative Hypergraph Model for Double Heterogeneity

While network science has become an indispensable tool for studying complex systems, the conventional use of pairwise links often shows limitations in describing high-order interactions properly. Hypergraphs, where each edge can connect more than two nodes, have thus become a new paradigm in network science. Yet, we are still in lack of models linking network growth and hyperedge expansion, both of which are commonly observable in the real world. Here, we propose a generative hypergraph model by employing the preferential attachment mechanism in both nodes and hyperedge formation. The model can produce bi-heterogeneity, exhibiting scale-free distributions in both hyperdegree and hyperedge size. We provide a mean-field treatment that gives the expression of the two scaling exponents, which agree with the numerical simulations. Our model may help to understand the networked systems showing both types of heterogeneity and facilitate the study of complex dynamics thereon.

Harmonic enhancement using learnable comb filter for light-weight full-band speech enhancement model

With fewer feature dimensions, filter banks are often used in light-weight full-band speech enhancement models. In order to further enhance the coarse speech in the sub-band domain, it is necessary to apply a post-filtering for harmonic retrieval. The signal processing-based comb filters used in RNNoise and PercepNet have limited performance and may cause speech quality degradation due to inaccurate fundamental frequency estimation. To tackle this problem, we propose a learnable comb filter to enhance harmonics. Based on the sub-band model, we design a DNN-based fundamental frequency estimator to estimate the discrete fundamental frequencies and a comb filter for harmonic enhancement, which are trained via an end-to-end pattern. The experiments show the advantages of our proposed method over PecepNet and DeepFilterNet.

A mixed-norm estimate of the two-particle reduced density matrix of many-body Schrödinger dynamics for deriving the Vlasov equation

We re-examine the combined semi-classical and mean-field limit in the $N$-body fermionic Schrödinger equation with pure state initial data using the Husimi measure framework. The Husimi measure equation involves three residue types: kinetic, semiclassical, and mean-field. The main result of this paper is to provide better estimates for the kinetic and mean-field residue than those in \cite{Chen2021JSP}. Especially, the estimate for the mean-field residue is shown to be smaller than the semiclassical residue by a mixed-norm estimate of the two-particle reduced density matrix factorization. Our analysis also updates the oscillation estimate parts in the residual term estimates appeared in \cite{Chen2021JSP}.

Regression analysis of longitudinal data with mixed synchronous and asynchronous longitudinal covariates

In linear models, omitting a covariate that is orthogonal to covariates in the model does not result in biased coefficient estimation. This in general does not hold for longitudinal data, where additional assumptions are needed to get unbiased coefficient estimation in addition to the orthogonality between omitted longitudinal covariates and longitudinal covariates in the model. We propose methods to mitigate the omitted variable bias under weaker assumptions. A two-step estimation procedure is proposed for inference about the asynchronous longitudinal covariates, when such covariates are observed. For mixed synchronous and asynchronous longitudinal covariates, we get parametric rate of convergence for the coefficient estimation of the synchronous longitudinal covariates by the two-step method. Extensive simulation studies provide numerical support for the theoretical findings. We illustrate the performance of our method on dataset from the Alzheimers Disease Neuroimaging Initiative study.

Complex-valued neural operator assisted soliton identification

The numerical determination of solitary states is an important topic for such research areas as Bose-Einstein condensates, nonlinear optics, plasma physics, etc. In this paper, we propose a data-driven approach for identifying solitons based on dynamical solutions of real-time differential equations. Our approach combines a machine-learning architecture called the complex-valued neural operator (CNO) with an energy-restricted gradient optimization. The former serves as a generalization of the traditional neural operator to the complex domain, and constructs a smooth mapping between the initial and final states; the latter facilitates the search for solitons by constraining the energy space. We concretely demonstrate this approach on the quasi-one-dimensional Bose-Einstein condensate with homogeneous and inhomogeneous nonlinearities. Our work offers a new idea for data-driven effective modeling and studies of solitary waves in nonlinear physical systems.

Mid-Infrared Upconversion Imaging Under Different Illumination Conditions

Converting the medium infrared field to the visible band is an effective image detection method. We propose a comprehensive theory of image up-conversion under continuous optical pumping, and discuss the relationship between the experimental parameters and imaging field of view, resolution, quantum efficiency, and conversion bandwidth. Theoretical predictions of upconversion imaging results are given based on numerical simulations, which show good agreement with experimental results. In particular, coherent and incoherent light illumination are studied separately and the advantages and disadvantages of their imaging performance are compared and analysed. This work provides a study of the upconversion image detection performance of the system, which is of great value in guiding the design of the detection system and bringing it to practical applications.

Think Twice before Driving: Towards Scalable Decoders for End-to-End Autonomous Driving

End-to-end autonomous driving has made impressive progress in recent years. Existing methods usually adopt the decoupled encoder-decoder paradigm, where the encoder extracts hidden features from raw sensor data, and the decoder outputs the ego-vehicle's future trajectories or actions. Under such a paradigm, the encoder does not have access to the intended behavior of the ego agent, leaving the burden of finding out safety-critical regions from the massive receptive field and inferring about future situations to the decoder. Even worse, the decoder is usually composed of several simple multi-layer perceptrons (MLP) or GRUs while the encoder is delicately designed (e.g., a combination of heavy ResNets or Transformer). Such an imbalanced resource-task division hampers the learning process. In this work, we aim to alleviate the aforementioned problem by two principles: (1) fully utilizing the capacity of the encoder; (2) increasing the capacity of the decoder. Concretely, we first predict a coarse-grained future position and action based on the encoder features. Then, conditioned on the position and action, the future scene is imagined to check the ramification if we drive accordingly. We also retrieve the encoder features around the predicted coordinate to obtain fine-grained information about the safety-critical region. Finally, based on the predicted future and the retrieved salient feature, we refine the coarse-grained position and action by predicting its offset from ground-truth. The above refinement module could be stacked in a cascaded fashion, which extends the capacity of the decoder with spatial-temporal prior knowledge about the conditioned future. We conduct experiments on the CARLA simulator and achieve state-of-the-art performance in closed-loop benchmarks. Extensive ablation studies demonstrate the effectiveness of each proposed module.

High-Accuracy Multicommodity Flows via Iterative Refinement

The multicommodity flow problem is a classic problem in network flow and combinatorial optimization, with applications in transportation, communication, logistics, and supply chain management, etc. Existing algorithms often focus on low-accuracy approximate solutions, while high-accuracy algorithms typically rely on general linear program solvers. In this paper, we present efficient high-accuracy algorithms for a broad family of multicommodity flow problems on undirected graphs, demonstrating improved running times compared to general linear program solvers. Our main result shows that we can solve the $\ell_{q, p}$-norm multicommodity flow problem to a $(1 + \varepsilon)$ approximation in time $O_{q, p}(m^{1+o(1)} k^2 \log(1 / \varepsilon))$, where $k$ is the number of commodities, and $O_{q, p}(\cdot)$ hides constants depending only on $q$ or $p$. As $q$ and $p$ approach to $1$ and infinity respectively, $\ell_{q, p}$-norm flow tends to maximum concurrent flow. We introduce the first iterative refinement framework for $\ell_{q, p}$-norm minimization problems, which reduces the problem to solving a series of decomposable residual problems. In the case of $k$-commodity flow, each residual problem can be decomposed into $k$ single commodity convex flow problems, each of which can be solved in almost-linear time. As many classical variants of multicommodity flows were shown to be complete for linear programs in the high-accuracy regime [Ding-Kyng-Zhang, ICALP'22], our result provides new directions for studying more efficient high-accuracy multicommodity flow algorithms.

Electrostatic effects of the MnBi2Te4-superconductor hetero-structures in chiral Majorana search

The realization of chiral Majorana modes is a challenging task. We aim to comprehend the phase diagrams and parameter control capabilities of the actual devices used in the chiral Majorana search. Beyond the well-known minimal models, we develop a numerical simulation scheme using a self-consistent Schrodinger-Poisson approach to study, as an example, the MnBi2Te4 thin film coupled to an s-wave superconductor. We show that both the superconducting proximity effect and the tunability of the chemical potential for the topological surface states are significantly influenced by the gate-induced electrostatic potential. This complicates the implementation in experiments, and the actual topological region will be narrowed in stark contrast to those predicted in the previous minimal models. Nevertheless, we demonstrate that the chiral Majorana mode still exists in a wide range of experimental parameters with practical tunability.

Coexistence Designs of Radar and Communication Systems in a Multi-path Scenario

The focus of this study is on the spectrum sharing between multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) communications and co-located MIMO radar systems in multi-path environments. The major challenge is to suppress the mutual interference between the two systems while combining the useful multi-path components received at each system. We tackle this challenge by jointly designing the communication precoder, radar transmit waveform and receive filter. Specifically, the signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) at the radar receiver is maximized subject to constraints on the radar waveform, communication rate and transmit power. The multi-path propagation complicates the expressions of the radar SINR and communication rate, leading to a non-convex problem. To solve it, a sub-optimal algorithm based on the alternating maximization is used to optimize the precoder, radar transmit waveform and receive filter iteratively. Simulation results are provided to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed design.
