Van der Waals Magnetic Electrode Transfer for Two-Dimensional Spintronic Devices

Two-dimensional (2D) materials are promising candidates for spintronic applications. Maintaining their atomically smooth interfaces during integration of ferromagnetic (FM) electrodes is crucial since conventional metal deposition tends to induce defects at the interfaces. Meanwhile, the difficulties in picking up FM metals with strong adhesion and in achieving conductance match between FM electrodes and spin transport channels make it challenging to fabricate high-quality 2D spintronic devices using metal transfer techniques. Here, we report a solvent-free magnetic electrode transfer technique that employs a graphene layer to assist in the transfer of FM metals. It also serves as part of the FM electrode after transfer for optimizing spin injection, which enables the realization of spin valves with excellent performance based on various 2D materials. In addition to two-terminal devices, we demonstrate that the technique is applicable for four-terminal spin valves with nonlocal geometry. Our results provide a promising future of realizing 2D spintronic applications using the developed magnetic electrode transfer technique.

Optimal Second-Order Rates for Quantum Information Decoupling

In this paper, we consider the standard quantum information decoupling, in which Alice aims to decouple her system from the environment by local operations and discarding some of her systems. To achieve an $\varepsilon$-decoupling with trace distance as the error criterion, we establish a near-optimal one-shot characterization for the largest dimension of the remainder system in terms of the conditional $(1-\varepsilon)$-hypothesis-testing entropy. When the underlying system is independent and identically prepared, our result leads to the matched second-order rate as well as the matched moderate deviation rate. As an application, we find an achievability bound in entanglement distillation protocol, where the objective is for Alice and Bob to transform their quantum state to maximally entangled state with largest possible dimension using only local operations and one-way classical communications.

On Strong Converse Theorems for Quantum Hypothesis Testing and Channel Coding

Strong converse theorems refer to the study of impossibility results in information theory. In particular, Mosonyi and Ogawa established a one-shot strong converse bound for quantum hypothesis testing [Comm. Math. Phys, 334(3), 2014], which servers as a primitive tool for establishing a variety of tight strong converse theorems in quantum information theory. In this short note, we demonstrate an alternative one-line proof for this bound via the variational expression of measured Rényi divergences [Lett. Math. Phys, 107(12), 2017]. Then, we show that the variational expression is a direct consequence of Hölder's inequality.

Experimental investigations of quasi-coherent micro-instabilities in Ohmic plasmas

The ITG and TEM instabilities with quasi-coherent spectra have been identified experimentally, by the newly developed far-forward collective scattering measurements in J-TEXT tokamak Ohmical plasmas. The ITG mode has characteristic frequencies in the range of 30-100kHz and wavenumber of k_θρ_s<0.3. After the plasma density exceeds at critical value, the ITG mode shows a bifurcation behavior, featured by frequency decrease and amplitude enhancement. Meanwhile, the ion energy loss enhancement and confinement degradation are also observed. It gives the direct experimental evidence for ion thermal transport caused by ITG instability.

Relative entropy decay and complete positivity mixing time

We prove that the complete modified logarithmic Sobolev constant of a quantum Markov semigroup is bounded by the inverse of its complete positivity mixing time. For classical Markov semigroups, this implies that every sub-Laplacian given by a Hörmander system on a compact manifold satisfies a uniform modified log-Sobolev inequality for matrix-valued functions. For quantum Markov semigroups, we obtain that the complete modified logarithmic Sobolev constant is comparable to spectral gap up to a constant as logarithm of dimension constant. This estimate is asymptotically tight for a quantum birth-death process. Our results and the consequence of concentration inequalities apply to GNS-symmetric semigroups on general von Neumann algebras.

Privacy Amplification Against Quantum Side Information Via Regular Random Binning

We consider privacy amplification against quantum side information by using regular random binning as an effective extractor. For constant-type sources, we obtain error exponent and strong converse bounds in terms of the so-called quantum Augustin information. Via type decomposition, we then recover the error exponent for independent and identically distributed sources proved by Dupuis [arXiv:2105.05342]. As an application, we obtain an achievable secrecy exponent for classical-quantum wiretap channel coding in terms of the Augustin information, which solves an open problem in [IEEE Trans.~Inf.~Theory, 65(12):7985, 2019]. Our approach is to establish an operational equivalence between privacy amplification and quantum soft covering; this may be of independent interest.

This article presents an in-depth study of the sequence of events leading to density limit disruption in J-TEXT tokamak plasmas, with an emphasis on boudary turbulent transport and the high-field-side high-density (HFSHD) front. These phenomena were extensively investigated by using Langmuir probe and Polarimeter-interferometer diagnostics.

Tight One-Shot Analysis for Convex Splitting with Applications in Quantum Information Theory

Convex splitting is a powerful technique in quantum information theory used in proving the achievability of numerous information-processing protocols such as quantum state redistribution and quantum network channel coding. In this work, we establish a one-shot error exponent and a one-shot strong converse for convex splitting with trace distance as an error criterion. Our results show that the derived error exponent (strong converse exponent) is positive if and only if the rate is in (outside) the achievable region. This leads to new one-shot exponent results in various tasks such as communication over quantum wiretap channels, secret key distillation, one-way quantum message compression, quantum measurement simulation, and quantum channel coding with side information at the transmitter. We also establish a near-optimal one-shot characterization of the sample complexity for convex splitting, which yields matched second-order asymptotics. This then leads to stronger one-shot analysis in many quantum information-theoretic tasks.

Quantum Broadcast Channel Simulation via Multipartite Convex Splitting

We show that the communication cost of quantum broadcast channel simulation under free entanglement assistance between the sender and the receivers is asymptotically characterized by an efficiently computable single-letter formula in terms of the channel's multipartite mutual information. Our core contribution is a new one-shot achievability result for multipartite quantum state splitting via multipartite convex splitting. As part of this, we face a general instance of the quantum joint typicality problem with arbitrarily overlapping marginals. The crucial technical ingredient to sidestep this difficulty is a conceptually novel multipartite mean-zero decomposition lemma, together with employing recently introduced complex interpolation techniques for sandwiched Rényi divergences. Moreover, we establish an exponential convergence of the simulation error when the communication costs are within the interior of the capacity region. As the costs approach the boundary of the capacity region moderately quickly, we show that the error still vanishes asymptotically.

Validation of the plasma-wall self-organization model for density limit in ECRH-assisted start-up of Ohmic discharges on J-TEXT

A recently developed plasma-wall self-organization (PWSO) model predicts a significantly enhanced density limit, which may be attainable in tokamaks with ECRH-assisted ohmic startup and sufficiently high initial neutral density. Experiments have been conducted on J-TEXT to validate such a density limit scenario based on this model. Experimental results demonstrate that increasing the pre-filled gas pressure or ECRH power during the startup phase can effectively enhance plasma purity and raise the density limit at the flat-top. Despite the dominant carbon fraction in the wall material, some discharges approach the edge of the density-free regime of the 1D model of PWSO.

Sufficient statistic and recoverability via Quantum Fisher Information metrics

We prove that for a large class of quantum Fisher information, a quantum channel is sufficient for a family of quantum states, i.e., the input states can be recovered from the output, if and only if the quantum Fisher information is preserved under the quantum channel. This class, for instance, includes Winger-Yanase-Dyson skew information. On the other hand, interestingly, the SLD quantum Fisher information, as the most popular example of quantum analog of Fisher information, does not satisfy this property. Our recoverability result is obtained by studying Riemannian monotone metrics on the quantum state space, i.e. metrics monotone decreasing under the action of quantum channels, a property often called data processing inequality. For two quantum states, the monotone metric gives the corresponding quantum $χ^2$ divergence. We obtain an approximate recovery result in the sense that, if the quantum $χ^2$ divergence is approximately preserved by a quantum channel, then two states can be approximately recovered by the Petz recovery map. We also obtain a universal recovery bound for the $χ_{\frac{1}{2}}$ divergence. Finally, we discuss applications in the context of quantum thermodynamics and the resource theory of asymmetry.

Entropy Uncertainty Relations and Strong Sub-additivity of Quantum Channels

We prove an entropic uncertainty relation for two quantum channels, extending the work of Frank and Lieb for quantum measurements. This is obtained via a generalized strong super-additivity (SSA) of quantum entropy. Motivated by Petz's algebraic SSA inequality, we also obtain a generalized SSA for quantum relative entropy. As a special case, it gives an improved data processing inequality.

Sample optimal tomography of quantum Markov chains

A state on a tripartite quantum system $\mathcal{H}_{A}\otimes \mathcal{H}_{B}\otimes\mathcal{H}_{C} $ forms a Markov chain, i.e., quantum conditional independence, if it can be reconstructed from its marginal on $\mathcal{H}_{A}\otimes \mathcal{H}_{B}$ by a quantum operation from $\mathcal{H}_{B}$ to $\mathcal{H}_{B}\otimes\mathcal{H}_{C}$ via the famous Petz map: a quantum Markov chain $ρ_{ABC}$ satisfies $ρ_{ABC}=ρ_{BC}^{1/2}(ρ_B^{-1/2}ρ_{AB}ρ_B^{-1/2}\otimes id_C)ρ_{BC}^{1/2}$. In this paper, we study the robustness of the Petz map for different metrics, i.e., the closeness of marginals implies the closeness of the Petz map outcomes. The robustness results are dimension-independent for infidelity $δ$ and trace distance $ε$. The applications of robustness results are The sample complexity of quantum Markov chain tomography, i.e., how many copies of an unknown quantum Markov chain are necessary and sufficient to determine the state, is $\tildeΘ(\frac{(d_A^2+d_C^2)d_B^2}δ)$, and $\tildeΘ(\frac{(d_A^2+d_C^2)d_B^2}{ε^2}) $. The sample complexity of quantum Markov Chain certification, i.e., to certify whether a tripartite state equals a fixed given quantum Markov Chain $σ_{ABC}$ or at least $δ$-far from $σ_{ABC}$, is $Θ(\frac{(d_A+d_C)d_B}δ)$, and $Θ(\frac{(d_A+d_C)d_B}{ε^2})$. $\tilde{O}(\frac{\min\{d_Ad_B^3d_C^3,d_A^3d_B^3d_C\}}{ε^2})$ copies to test whether $ρ_{ABC}$ is a quantum Markov Chain or $ε$-far from its Petz recovery state. We generalized the tomography results into multipartite quantum system by showing $\tilde{O}(\frac{n^2\max_{i} \{d_i^2d_{i+1}^2\}}δ)$ copies for infidelity $δ$ are enough for $n$-partite quantum Markov chain tomography with $d_i$ being the dimension of the $i$-th subsystem.

Properties of Noncommutative Renyi and Augustin Information

Rényi and Augustin information are generalizations of mutual information defined via the Rényi divergence, playing a significant role in evaluating the performance of information processing tasks by virtue of its connection to the error exponent analysis. In quantum information theory, there are three generalizations of the classical Rényi divergence -- the Petz's, sandwiched, and log-Euclidean versions, that possess meaningful operational interpretation. However, the associated quantum Rényi and Augustin information are much less explored compared with their classical counterpart, and lacking crucial properties hinders applications of these quantities to error exponent analysis in the quantum regime. The goal of this paper is to analyze fundamental properties of the Rényi and Augustin information from a noncommutative measure-theoretic perspective. Firstly, we prove the uniform equicontinuity for all three quantum versions of Rényi and Augustin information, and it hence yields the joint continuity of these quantities in order and prior input distributions. Secondly, we establish the concavity of the scaled Rényi and Augustin information in the region of $s\in(-1,0)$ for both Petz's and the sandwiched versions. This completes the open questions raised by Holevo [IEEE Trans.~Inf.~Theory, 46(6):2256--2261, 2000], and Mosonyi and Ogawa [Commun.~Math.~Phys., 355(1):373--426, 2017]. For the applications, we show that the strong converse exponent in classical-quantum channel coding satisfies a minimax identity, which means that the strong converse exponent can be attained by the best constant composition code. The established concavity is further employed to prove an entropic duality between classical data compression with quantum side information and classical-quantum channel coding, and a Fenchel duality in joint source-channel coding with quantum side information.

On a tracial version of Haemers bound

We extend upper bounds on the quantum independence number and the quantum Shannon capacity of graphs to their counterparts in the commuting operator model. We introduce a von Neumann algebraic generalization of the fractional Haemers bound (over $\mathbb{C}$) and prove that the generalization upper bounds the commuting quantum independence number. We call our bound the tracial Haemers bound, and we prove that it is multiplicative with respect to the strong product. In particular, this makes it an upper bound on the Shannon capacity. The tracial Haemers bound is incomparable with the Lovász theta function, another well-known upper bound on the Shannon capacity. We show that separating the tracial and fractional Haemers bounds would refute Connes' embedding conjecture. Along the way, we prove that the tracial rank and tracial Haemers bound are elements of the (commuting quantum) asymptotic spectrum of graphs (Zuiddam, Combinatorica, 2019). We also show that the inertia bound (an upper bound on the quantum independence number) upper bounds the commuting quantum independence number.

Complete Modified Logarithmic Sobolev inequality for sub-Laplacian on $SU(2)$

We prove that the canonical sub-Laplacian on $SU(2)$ admits a uniform modified log-Sobolev inequality for all its matrix-valued functions, independent of the matrix dimension. This is the first example of sub-Laplacian that a matrix-valued modified log-Sobolev inequality has been obtained. We also show that on Lie groups, the heat kernel measure $p_t$ at time $t$ admits matrix-valued modified log-Sobolev constants of order $O(t^{-1})$.

A Comparative Study of Deep Reinforcement Learning-based Transferable Energy Management Strategies for Hybrid Electric Vehicles

The deep reinforcement learning-based energy management strategies (EMS) have become a promising solution for hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs). When driving cycles are changed, the neural network will be retrained, which is a time-consuming and laborious task. A more efficient way of choosing EMS is to combine deep reinforcement learning (DRL) with transfer learning, which can transfer knowledge of one domain to the other new domain, making the network of the new domain reach convergence values quickly. Different exploration methods of DRL, including adding action space noise and parameter space noise, are compared against each other in the transfer learning process in this work. Results indicate that the network added parameter space noise is more stable and faster convergent than the others. In conclusion, the best exploration method for transferable EMS is to add noise in the parameter space, while the combination of action space noise and parameter space noise generally performs poorly. Our code is available at https://github.com/BIT-XJY/RL-based-Transferable-EMS.git.

Optimal Second-Order Rates for Quantum Soft Covering and Privacy Amplification

We study quantum soft covering and privacy amplification against quantum side information. The former task aims to approximate a quantum state by sampling from a prior distribution and querying a quantum channel. The latter task aims to extract uniform and independent randomness against quantum adversaries. For both tasks, we use trace distance to measure the closeness between the processed state and the ideal target state. We show that the minimal amount of samples for achieving an $\varepsilon$-covering is given by the $(1-\varepsilon)$-hypothesis testing information (with additional logarithmic additive terms), while the maximal extractable randomness for an $\varepsilon$-secret extractor is characterized by the conditional $(1-\varepsilon)$-hypothesis testing entropy. When performing independent and identical repetitions of the tasks, our one-shot characterizations lead to tight asymptotic expansions of the above-mentioned operational quantities. We establish their second-order rates given by the quantum mutual information variance and the quantum conditional information variance, respectively. Moreover, our results extend to the moderate deviation regime, which are the optimal asymptotic rates when the trace distances vanish at sub-exponential speed. Our proof technique is direct analysis of trace distance without smoothing.
