Design of a 325MHz SC Spoke040 cavity at IHEP

The 325MHz, β=0.40 superconducting single spoke cavity (Spoke040) was one of the most challenges for the China-ADS (Accelerator Driven System) project. The design was finished, and the fabrication was in progressing. In this paper, we studied the main radio frequency (RF) and mechanical parameters, and compared the arc-shaped and plate-shaped end group structures.

The study of tuning system for BEPC II

Tuning system plays a very important role when superconducting cavity works. It cooperates with other control loops, to adjust the frequency of cavity with high precision, reduce the reflection power, guarantee the stability of beam and ensure the safety of superconducting cavity. This paper focuses mainly on the tuning system working principle, the working state and problems that BEPC (Beijing Electron Positron Collider) II has encountered during operation.

Low beta spoke cavity multipacting analysis

The simulation and analysis for electron multipacting phenomenon in low β spoke superconducting cavity in ADS proton accelerator are proposed. Using both CST and Track3P codes, the electron multipacting calculation for β = 0.12 spoke superconducting cavity is implemented. The methods of multipacting calculation on both codes are studied and described. With the comparison between the calculation results and the cavity vertical test results, the accuracy and reliability of different code on calculating multipacting are analyzed. Multipacting calculation can help to understand the result of vertical test and also can help to do the optimation in cavity design.

Parity violating superfluidity in ultra-cold fermions under the influence of artificial non-Abelian gauge fields

We discuss the creation of parity violating Fermi superfluids in the presence of non-Abelian gauge fields involving spin-orbit coupling and crossed Zeeman fields. We focus on spin-orbit coupling with equal Rashba and Dresselhaus (ERD) strengths which has been realized experimentally in ultra-cold atoms, but we also discuss the case of arbitrary mixing of Rashba and Dresselhaus (RD) and of Rashba-only (RO) spin-orbit coupling. To illustrate the emergence of parity violation in the superfluid, we analyze first the excitation spectrum in the normal state and show that the generalized helicity bands do not have inversion symmetry in momentum space when crossed Zeeman fields are present. This is also reflected in the superfluid phase, where the order parameter tensor in the generalized helicity basis violates parity. However, the pairing fields in singlet and triplet channels of the generalized helicity basis are still parity even and odd, respectively. Parity violation is further reflected on ground state properties such as the spin-resolved momentum distribution, and in excitation properties such as the spin-dependent spectral function and density of states.

Quantum Degenerate Fermi Gas with Spin-orbit Coupling and Crossed Zeeman Fields

We study quantum degenerate ultra-cold Fermi gases in the presence of artificial spin-orbit coupling and crossed Zeeman fields. We emphasize the case where parity is violated in the excitation spectrum and compare it with the simpler situation where parity is preserved. We investigate in detail spectroscopic properties such as the excitation spectrum, the spectral function, momentum distribution and density of states for the cases where parity is preserved or violated. Similarly, we show that thermodynamic properties such as pressure, chemical potential, entropy, specific heat, isothermal compressibility and induced spin polarization become anisotropic as a function of Zeeman field components, when parity is violated. Lastly, we discuss the effects of interactions and present results for the pairing temperature as the precursor for the transition to a superfluid state. In particular, we find that the pairing temperature is dramatically reduced in the weak interaction regime as parity violation gets stronger, and that the momentum dependence of the order parameter for superfluidity violates parity when crossed Zeeman fields are present for finite spin-orbit coupling.

Ultra-cold fermions in the flatland: evolution from BCS to Bose superfluidity in two-dimensions with spin-orbit and Zeeman fields

We discuss the evolution from BCS to Bose superfluidity for ultracold fermions in two-dimensions and in the presence of simultaneous spin-orbit and Zeeman fields. We analyze several thermodynamic properties to characterize different superfluid phases including pressure, compressibility, induced polarization, and spin susceptibility. Furthermore, we compute the momentum distribution and construct topological invariants for each of the superfluid phases.

Who is the Lord of the Rings: Majorana, Dirac or Lifshitz? The Spin-Orbit-Zeeman Saga in Ultra-cold Fermions

We discuss the emergence of rings of zero-energy excitations in momentum space for superfluid phases of ultra-cold fermions when spin-orbit, Zeeman fields and interactions are varied. We show that phases containing rings of nodes possess non-trivial topological invariants, and that phase transitions between distinct topological phases belong to the Lifshitz class. Upon crossing phase boundaries, existing massless Dirac fermions in the gapless phase anihilate to produce bulk zero-mode Majorana fermions at phase boundaries and then become massive Dirac fermions in the gapped phase. We characterize these tunable topological phase transitions via several spectroscopic properties, including excitation spectrum, spectral function and momentum distribution. Since the emergence or disappearance of rings leads to topological transitions in momentum space, we conclude that Lifshitz is the lord of the rings.

Artificial spin-orbit coupling in ultra-cold Fermi superfluids

We develop a theory for interacting fermions in the presence of spin-orbit coupling and Zeeman fields, and show that many new superfluids phases, which are topological in nature, emerge. Depending on values of spin-orbit coupling, Zeeman fields, and interactions, initially gapped s-wave superfluids acquire p-wave, d-wave, f-wave and higher angular momentum components, which produce zeros in the excitation spectrum, rendering the superfluid gapless. Several multi-critical points, which separate topological superfluid phases from normal or non-uniform, are accessible depending on spin-orbit coupling, Zeeman fields or interactions, setting the stage for the study of tunable topological superfluids.

Topological phase transitions in ultra-cold Fermi superfluids: the evolution from BCS to BEC under artificial spin-orbit fields

We discuss topological phase transitions in ultra-cold Fermi superfluids induced by interactions and artificial spin orbit fields. We construct the phase diagram for population imbalanced systems at zero and finite temperatures, and analyze spectroscopic and thermodynamic properties to characterize various phase transitions. For balanced systems, the evolution from BCS to BEC superfluids in the presence of spin-orbit effects is only a crossover as the system remains fully gapped, even though a triplet component of the order parameter emerges. However, for imbalanced populations, spin-orbit fields induce a triplet component in the order parameter that produces nodes in the quasiparticle excitation spectrum leading to bulk topological phase transitions of the Lifshitz type. Additionally a fully gapped phase exists, where a crossover from indirect to direct gap occurs, but a topological transition to a gapped phase possessing Majorana fermions edge states does not occur.

Evolution from BCS to BEC superfluidity in the presence of spin-orbit coupling

We discuss the evolution from BCS to BEC superfluids in the presence of spin-orbit coupling, and show that this evolution is just a crossover in the balanced case. The dependence of several thermodynamic properties, such as the chemical potential, order parameter, pressure, entropy, isothermal compressibility and spin susceptibility tensor on the spin-orbit coupling and interaction parameter at low temperatures are analyzed. We studied both the case of equal Rashba and Dresselhaus (ERD) and the Rashba-only (RO) spin-orbit coupling. Comparisons between the two cases reveal several striking differences in the corresponding thermodynamic quantities. Finally we propose measuring the spin susceptibility as a means to detect the spin-orbit coupling effect.

The evolution from BCS to BEC superfluidity in the presence of disorder

We describe the effects of disorder on the critical temperature of $s$-wave superfluids from the BCS to the BEC regime, with direct application to ultracold fermions. We use the functional integral method and the replica technique to study Gaussian correlated disorder due to impurities, and we discuss how this system can be generated experimentally. In the absence of disorder, the BCS regime is characterized by pair breaking and phase coherence temperature scales which are essentially the same allowing strong correlations between the amplitude and phase of the order parameter for superfluidity. As non-pair breaking disorder is introduced the largely overlapping Cooper pairs conspire to maintain phase coherence such that the critical temperature remains essentially unchanged, and Anderson's theorem is satisfied. However in the BEC regime the pair breaking and phase coherence temperature scales are very different such that non-pair breaking disorder can affect dramatically phase coherence, and thus the critical temperature, without the requirement of breaking tightly-bound fermion pairs simultaneously. In this case, Anderson's theorem does not apply, and the critical temperature can be more easily reduced in comparison to the BCS limit. Lastly, we find that the superfluid is more robust against disorder in the intermediate region near unitarity between the two regimes.

Electrostatically induced phase transitions in superconducting complex oxides

We describe quantum phase transitions in superconducting complex oxides which could be tuned by electrostatic charge transfer. Using a simple model for the superconductivity of a thin film or surface of a bulk copper oxide, we show that tuning the carrier density may allow the visitation of several superconducting phases with different pairing symmetries such as extended $s$- $(se)$, $d$- and $(se \pm id)$-wave. We construct a universal phase diagram for single-band superconductors with $se$- and d-wave components of the order parameter based on symmetry considerations alone. For a specific model with nearest neighbor attraction, we obtain the phase diagram in the interaction versus filling factor space showing the boundaries of the possible phases. Finally, we calculate the superfluid density and penetration depth as characteristic properties of each phase.

Disorder effects during the evolution from BCS to BEC superfluidity

However, in the BEC regime the pair breaking and phase coherence temperature scales are very different such that non-pair breaking disorder can affect dramatically phase coherence, and thus the critical temperature, without the requirement of breaking tightly-bound fermion pairs simultaneously. Finally, we find that the superfluid is more robust against weak disorder in the intermediate region between the two regimes.

Generating Function in Quantum Mechanics: An Application to Counting Problems

In this paper we present a generating function approach to two counting problems in elementary quantum mechanics. The first is to find the total ways of distributing identical particles among different states. The second is to find the degeneracies of energy levels in a quantum system with multiple degrees of freedom. Our approach provides an alternative to the methods in textbooks.

Comment on "Berry Phase in a Composite System"

We show in this comment that the results obtained in a recent work by Yi et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 92, 150406 (2004)] are quantitatively not correct and the proposed subsystem Berry phase is not well-defined.
