Image color transfer to evoke different emotions based on color combinations

In this paper, a color transfer framework to evoke different emotions for images based on color combinations is proposed. The purpose of this color transfer is to change the "look and feel" of images, i.e., evoking different emotions. Colors are confirmed as the most attractive factor in images. In addition, various studies in both art and science areas have concluded that other than single color, color combinations are necessary to evoke specific emotions. Therefore, we propose a novel framework to transfer color of images based on color combinations, using a predefined color emotion model. The contribution of this new framework is three-fold. First, users do not need to provide reference images as used in traditional color transfer algorithms. In most situations, users may not have enough aesthetic knowledge or path to choose desired reference images. Second, because of the usage of color combinations instead of single color for emotions, a new color transfer algorithm that does not require an image library is proposed. Third, again because of the usage of color combinations, artifacts that are normally seen in traditional frameworks using single color are avoided. We present encouraging results generated from this new framework and its potential in several possible applications including color transfer of photos and paintings.

Further results on controlling the false discovery proportion

The probability of false discovery proportion (FDP) exceeding $γ\in[0,1)$, defined as $γ$-FDP, has received much attention as a measure of false discoveries in multiple testing. Although this measure has received acceptance due to its relevance under dependency, not much progress has been made yet advancing its theory under such dependency in a nonasymptotic setting, which motivates our research in this article. We provide a larger class of procedures containing the stepup analog of, and hence more powerful than, the stepdown procedure in Lehmann and Romano [Ann. Statist. 33 (2005) 1138-1154] controlling the $γ$-FDP under similar positive dependence condition assumed in that paper. We offer better alternatives of the stepdown and stepup procedures in Romano and Shaikh [IMS Lecture Notes Monogr. Ser. 49 (2006a) 33-50, Ann. Statist. 34 (2006b) 1850-1873] using pairwise joint distributions of the null $p$-values. We generalize the notion of $γ$-FDP making it appropriate in situations where one is willing to tolerate a few false rejections or, due to high dependency, some false rejections are inevitable, and provide methods that control this generalized $γ$-FDP in two different scenarios: (i) only the marginal $p$-values are available and (ii) the marginal $p$-values as well as the common pairwise joint distributions of the null $p$-values are available, and assuming both positive dependence and arbitrary dependence conditions on the $p$-values in each scenario. Our theoretical findings are being supported through numerical studies.

Capturing the Severity of Type II Errors in High-Dimensional Multiple Testing

The severity of type II errors is frequently ignored when deriving a multiple testing procedure, even though utilizing it properly can greatly help in making correct decisions. This paper puts forward a theory behind developing a multiple testing procedure that can incorporate the type II error severity and is optimal in the sense of minimizing a measure of false non-discoveries among all procedures controlling a measure of false discoveries. The theory is developed under a general model allowing arbitrary dependence by taking a compound decision theoretic approach to multiple testing with a loss function incorporating the type II error severity. We present this optimal procedure in its oracle form and offer numerical evidence of its superior performance over relevant competitors.

A 25 Gb/s Silicon Photonics Platform

Silicon has attracted attention as an inexpensive and scalable material system for photonic-electronic, system-on-chip development. For this, a platform with both photodetectors and modulators working at high speeds, with excellent cross-wafer uniformity, is needed. We demonstrate an optical-lithography, wafer-scale photonics platform with 25 Gb/s operation. We also demonstrate modulation with an ultra-low drive voltage of 1 Vpp at 25 Gb/s. We demonstrate attractive cross-wafer uniformity, and provide detailed information about the device geometry. Our platform is available to the community as part of a photonics shuttle service.

Gate-controlled weak antilocalization effect in inversion layer on p-type HgCdTe

We discover weak antilocalization effect of two-dimensional electron gas with one electric subband occupied in the inversion layer on p-type HgCdTe crystal. By fitting the model of Iordanskii, Lyanda-Geller and Pikus to data at varies temperatures and gate voltages, we extract phase coherence and spin-orbit scattering times as functions of temperature and carrier density. We find that Elliot-Yafet mechanism and Nyquist mechanism are the dominating spin decoherence and dephasing mechanisms, respectively. We also find that the Rashba parameter is relatively large and the dependence of Rashba parameter upon carrier density is not monotonic and an optimal carrier density exists for the maximization of spin-orbit coupling.
