Machine Learning-based Signal Detection for PMH Signals in Load-modulated MIMO System

Phase Modulation on the Hypersphere (PMH) is a power efficient modulation scheme for the \textit{load-modulated} multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) transmitters with central power amplifiers (CPA). However, it is difficult to obtain the precise channel state information (CSI), and the traditional optimal maximum likelihood (ML) detection scheme incurs high complexity which increases exponentially with the number of antennas and the number of bits carried per antenna in the PMH modulation. To detect the PMH signals without knowing the prior CSI, we first propose a signal detection scheme, termed as the hypersphere clustering scheme based on the expectation maximization (EM) algorithm with maximum likelihood detection (HEM-ML). By leveraging machine learning, the proposed detection scheme can accurately obtain information of the channel from a few of the received symbols with little resource cost and achieve comparable detection results as that of the optimal ML detector. To further reduce the computational complexity in the ML detection in HEM-ML, we also propose the second signal detection scheme, termed as the hypersphere clustering scheme based on the EM algorithm with KD-tree detection (HEM-KD). The CSI obtained from the EM algorithm is used to build a spatial KD-tree receiver codebook and the signal detection problem can be transformed into a nearest neighbor search (NNS) problem. The detection complexity of HEM-KD is significantly reduced without any detection performance loss as compared to HEM-ML. Extensive simulation results verify the effectiveness of our proposed detection schemes.

Double Anchor R-CNN for Human Detection in a Crowd

Detecting human in a crowd is a challenging problem due to the uncertainties of occlusion patterns. In this paper, we propose to handle the crowd occlusion problem in human detection by leveraging the head part. Double Anchor RPN is developed to capture body and head parts in pairs. A proposal crossover strategy is introduced to generate high-quality proposals for both parts as a training augmentation. Features of coupled proposals are then aggregated efficiently to exploit the inherent relationship. Finally, a Joint NMS module is developed for robust post-processing. The proposed framework, called Double Anchor R-CNN, is able to detect the body and head for each person simultaneously in crowded scenarios. State-of-the-art results are reported on challenging human detection datasets. Our model yields log-average miss rates (MR) of 51.79pp on CrowdHuman, 55.01pp on COCOPersons~(crowded sub-dataset) and 40.02pp on CrowdPose~(crowded sub-dataset), which outperforms previous baseline detectors by 3.57pp, 3.82pp, and 4.24pp, respectively. We hope our simple and effective approach will serve as a solid baseline and help ease future research in crowded human detection.

The Politics of Attention

We develop an equilibrium theory of attention and politics. In a spatial model of electoral competition where candidates have varying policy preferences, we examine what kinds of political behaviors capture voters' limited attention and how this concern affects the overall political outcomes. Following the seminal works of Downs (1957) and Sims (1998), we assume that voters are rationally inattentive and can process information about the policies at a cost proportional to entropy reduction. The main finding is an equilibrium phenomenon called attention- and media-driven extremism, namely as we increase the attention cost or garble the news technology, a truncated set of the equilibria captures voters' attention through enlarging the policy differentials between the varying types of the candidates. We supplement our analysis with historical accounts, and discuss its relevance in the new era featured with greater media choices and distractions, as well as the rise of partisan media and fake news.

Quantitatively analyzing intrinsic plasmonic chirality by tracking the interplay of electric and magnetic dipole modes

Plasmonic chirality exhibits great potential for novel nanooptical devices due to the generation of a strong chiroptical response. Previous reports on plasmonic chirality explanations are mainly based on phase retardation and coupling. We propose a quantitative model similar to the chiral molecules for explaining the mechanism of the intrinsic plasmonic chirality quantitatively based on the interplay and mixing of electric and magnetic dipole modes, which forms a mixed electric and magnetic polarizability. The analysis method is also suitable for small chiral object down to quasi-static limit without phase delay and expected to be a universal rule.

Heterodimer nanostructures induced energy focusing on metal film

As an interesting surface plasmon phenomenon discovered several years ago, electromagnetic field redistribution in nanoparticle dimer on film system provides a novel thought to enhance the light power on a plain film which could been widely used in surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS), solar cells, photo-catalysis, etc. Homodimers on film are mainly investigated in past years, while the properties of heterodimers on film are still unclear. In this work, size difference induced electromagnetic field redistribution in Ag nanoparticle dimer on Au film system is investigated first. The results obtained from finite element method indicate that the smaller nanoparticle has much greater ability to focus light energy on Au film, which even reached more than 5 time compared to the larger one. Further researches indicate that this energy focusing ability has a strong relationship to the wavelength and diameter ration in dimer. Similar focusing phenomenon is found in the system of thick wire-smaller particle on film. Later, the SERS spectra collected in the small nanoparticle-large nanowire system provide an experimental evidence for this theoretic predication. Our results strengthen the understanding of surface plasmon on plane film and have potential application prospects in the surface plasmon related fields.

Quantitatively analyzing the mechanism of giant circular dichroism in extrinsic plasmonic chiral nanostructures by the interplay of electric and magnetic dipoles

The plasmonic chirality has drawn a lot of attention because of the tunable circular dichroism (CD) and the enhancement for the signal of chiral molecules. Different mechanisms have been proposed for explaining the plasmonic CD, however, a quantitative one like ab initio mechanism in chiral molecules is still unavailable. In this work, a mechanism similar to the chiral molecules is analyzed. The giant extrinsic circular dichroism of plasmonic splitting rectangle ring is quantitatively investigated theoretically. The interplay of electric and magnetic modes of the meta-structure is proposed to explain the giant CD. The interplay is analyzed both in an analytical coupled electric-magnetic dipoles model and finite element method model. The surface charge distributions show that the circular current yielded in the splitting rectangle ring makes it behave like a magneton at some resonant modes, which interact with electric modes and results in a mixing of the two kinds of modes. The strong interplay of the two kinds of modes is mainly responsible for the giant CD.The analysis of the chiral near field of the structure shows potential applications in chiral molecule sensing.

Fano resonance assisting plasmonic circular dichroism from nanorice heterodimers for extrinsic chirality

In this work, the circular dichroisms (CD) of nanorice heterodimers consisting of two parallel arranged nanorices with the same size but different materials are investigated theoretically. Symmetry-breaking is introduced by using different materials and oblique incidence to achieve strong CD at the vicinity of Fano resonance peaks. We demonstrate that all Au-Ag heterodimers exhibit multipolar Fano resonances and strong CD effect. A simple quantitative analysis shows that the structure with larger Fano asymmetry factor has stronger CD. The intensity and peak positions of the CD effect can be flexibly tuned in a large range by changing particle size, shape, the inter-particle distance and surroundings. Furthermore, CD spectra exhibit high sensitivity to ambient medium in visible and near infrared regions. Our results here are beneficial for the design and application of high sensitive CD sensors and other related fields.

Utility Optimal Scheduling in Degree-Limited Satellite Networks

In this paper, we consider the problem of flow control together with power allocation to antennas on satellite with arbitrary link states, so as to maximize the utility function while stabilizing the network. Inspired by Lyapunov optimization method, a Degree-Limited Scheduling Algorithm (DLSA) is proposed with a control parameter V, which requires no stochastic knowledge of link state. Discussion about implementation is carried out about the complexity of DLSA and several approximation methods to reduce complexity. Analyze shows DLSA stabilizes the network and the gap between utility function under DLSA and the optimal value is arbitrarily close to zero on the order of O(1/V). Simulation results verify DLSA on a simple network.

Spherical cloaking using nonlinear transformations for improved segmentation into concentric isotropic coatings

Two novel classes of spherical invisibility cloaks based on nonlinear transformation have been studied. The cloaking characteristics are presented by segmenting the nonlinear transformation based spherical cloak into concentric isotropic homogeneous coatings. Detailed investigations of the optimal discretization (e.g., thickness control of each layer, nonlinear factor, etc.) are presented for both linear and nonlinear spherical cloaks and their effects on invisibility performance are also discussed. The cloaking properties and our choice of optimal segmentation are verified by the numerical simulation of not only near-field electric-field distribution but also the far-field radar cross section (RCS).
