Reconfigurable Terahertz Multi-Harmonic Dual-Combs

Dual-comb spectroscopy, constructed from two frequency combs with slightly different repetition frequencies, enables real-time and high-precision measurements without mechanical scanning. In the terahertz spectral range, dual-comb techniques provide a powerful tool for high-resolution and rapid spectroscopy. Quantum cascade lasers (QCLs), owing to their compact footprint and favorable size, weight, and power, have emerged as promising sources for THz dual-comb systems. In QCL frequency combs, the repetition frequency generated through intrinsic four-wave mixing is typically equal to the cavity round-trip frequency, corresponding to the fundamental comb. Although this repetition frequency can be tuned via current and temperature control, the accessible tuning range remains limited. Recently, harmonic frequency combs, whose repetition frequencies are integer multiples of the cavity round-trip frequency, have attracted increasing attention, offering enhanced single-line signal-to-noise ratios and providing direct insight into the strong nonlinearity of QCLs. Here, we demonstrate a reconfigurable multi-harmonic dual-comb system realized on a single self-detected THz QCL platform. By precisely controlling the driving current and thermal conditions, we achieve and switch between multiple dual-comb configurations, including fundamental-fundamental, fundamental-second-harmonic, second-harmonic-second-harmonic, and second-harmonic-third-harmonic dual-combs. These results establish harmonic order as an additional degree of freedom for dual-comb operation within a single laser system. The demonstrated platform enables high-resolution and high-sensitivity measurements while significantly simplifying the system architecture. This reconfigurable multi-band dual-comb approach based on a single QCL opens new opportunities for compact THz spectroscopy and frequency metrology.

DepthSeg: Depth prompting in remote sensing semantic segmentation

Remote sensing semantic segmentation is crucial for extracting detailed land surface information, enabling applications such as environmental monitoring, land use planning, and resource assessment. In recent years, advancements in artificial intelligence have spurred the development of automatic remote sensing semantic segmentation methods. However, the existing semantic segmentation methods focus on distinguishing spectral characteristics of different objects while ignoring the differences in the elevation of the different targets. This results in land cover misclassification in complex scenarios involving shadow occlusion and spectral confusion. In this paper, we introduce a depth prompting two-dimensional (2D) remote sensing semantic segmentation framework (DepthSeg). It automatically models depth/height information from 2D remote sensing images and integrates it into the semantic segmentation framework to mitigate the effects of spectral confusion and shadow occlusion. During the feature extraction phase of DepthSeg, we introduce a lightweight adapter to enable cost-effective fine-tuning of the large-parameter vision transformer encoder pre-trained by natural images. In the depth prompting phase, we propose a depth prompter to model depth/height features explicitly. In the semantic prediction phase, we introduce a semantic classification decoder that couples the depth prompts with high-dimensional land-cover features, enabling accurate extraction of land-cover types. Experiments on the LiuZhou dataset validate the advantages of the DepthSeg framework in land cover mapping tasks. Detailed ablation studies further highlight the significance of the depth prompts in remote sensing semantic segmentation.

Degenerate phase-matching for multi-wavelength nonlinear mixing in aperiodic lattice lasers

Holographically-designed aperiodic lattices have proven to be an exciting engineering technique for achieving electrically switchable single- or multi-frequency emissions in terahertz (THz) semiconductor lasers. Here, we employ the nonlinear transfer matrix modeling method to investigate multi-wavelength nonlinear (sum- or difference-) frequency generation within an integrated THz (idler) laser cavity that also supports optical (pump and signal) waves. The laser cavity includes an aperiodic lattice, which engineers the idler photon lifetimes and effective refractive indices. The key findings are: (i) the nonlinear conversion efficiency reveals resonant enhancement at those idler frequencies where the photon lifetime is high; (ii) the resonant phase-matching process between the pump and idler waves has a one-to-one link with absence of any other dispersion, the lowest threshold, multi-wavelength defect modes of the aperiodic lattice laser have degenerate phase-matched pump frequencies. This set of results will potentially have a significant impact on the wavelength multiplexing in electronically switchable THz-over-fiber communication systems [1].

An insight into acupoints and meridians in human body based on interstitial fluid circulation

The atlas of human acupoints and meridians has been utilized in clinical practice for almost a millennium although the anatomical structures and functions remain to be clarified. It has recently been reported that a long-distance interstitial fluid (ISF) circulatory pathway may originate from the acupoints in the extremities. As observed in living human subjects, cadavers and animals using magnetic resonance imaging and fluorescent tracers, the ISF flow pathways include at least 4 types of anatomical structures: the cutaneous-, perivenous-, periarterial-, and neural-pathways. Unlike the blood or lymphatic vessels, these ISF flow pathways are composed of highly ordered and topologically connected interstitial fibrous connective tissues that may work as guiderails for the ISF to flow actively over long distance under certain driving forces. Our experimental results demonstrated that most acupoints in the extremity endings connect with one or more ISF flow pathways and comprise a complex network of acupoint-ISF-pathways. We also found that this acupoint-ISF-pathway network can connect to visceral organs or tissues such as the pericardium and epicardium, even though the topographical geometry in human extremities does not totally match the meridian lines on the atlas that is currently used in traditional Chinese medicine. Based on our experimental data, the following working hypotheses are proposed. A comprehensive atlas will be constructed to systemically reveal the detailed anatomical structures of the acupoints-originated ISF circulation. Such an atlas may shed light on the mysteries shrouding the visceral correlations of acupoints and meridians, and inaugurate a new frontier for innovative medical applications.

Active interfacial dynamic transport of fluid in fibrous connective tissues and a hypothesis of interstitial fluid circulatory system

Fluid in interstitial spaces accounts for ~20% of an adult body weight. Does it circulate around the body like vascular circulations besides a diffusive and short-ranged transport? This bold conjecture has been debated for decades. As a conventional physiological concept, interstitial space was the space between cells and a micron-sized space. Fluid in interstitial spaces is thought to be entrapped within interstitial matrix. However, our serial data have further defined an interfacial transport zone on a solid fiber of interstitial matrix. Within this fine space that is probably nanosized, fluid can transport along a fiber under a driving power. Since 2006, our imaging data from volunteers and cadavers have revealed a long-distance extravascular pathway for interstitial fluid flow, comprising four types of anatomic distributions at least. The framework of each extravascular pathway contains the longitudinally assembled and oriented fibers, working as a fibrous guiderail for fluid flow. Interestingly, our data showed that the movement of fluid in a fibrous pathway is in response to a dynamic driving source and named as dynamotaxis. By analysis of some representative studies and our experimental results, a hypothesis of interstitial fluid circulatory system is proposed.

Iterative Thresholded Bi-Histogram Equalization for Medical Image Enhancement

Enhancement of human vision to get an insight to information content is of vital importance. The traditional histogram equalization methods have been suffering from amplified contrast with the addition of artifacts and a surprising unnatural visibility of the processed images. In order to overcome these drawbacks, this paper proposes interative, mean, and multi-threshold selection criterion with plateau limits, which consist of histogram segmentation, clipping and transformation modules. The histogram partition consists of multiple thresholding processes that divide the histogram into two parts, whereas the clipping process nicely enhances the contrast by having a check on the rate of enhancement that could be tuned. Histogram equalization to each segmented sub-histogram provides the output image with preserved brightness and enhanced contrast. Results of the present study showed that the proposed method efficiently handles the noise amplification. Further, it also preserves the brightness by retaining natural look of targeted image.
