Collapse of quasiparticle multiplets and $5f$ itinerant-localized crossovers in cubic phase Pu$_{3}$Ga

The physical properties of plutonium and plutonium-based intermetallic compounds are extremely sensitive to temperature, pressure, and chemical alloying. A celebrated example is the high-temperature $δ$ phase plutonium, which can be stabilized at room temperature by doping it with a few percent trivalent metal impurities, such as gallium or aluminum. The cubic phase Pu$_{3}$Ga, one of the plutonium-gallium intermetallic compounds, plays a key role in understanding the phase stability and phase transformation of the plutonium-gallium system. Its electronic structure might be essential to figure out the underlying mechanism that stabilizes the $δ$ phase plutonium-gallium alloy. In the present work, we studied the temperature-dependent correlated electronic states of cubic phase Pu$_{3}$Ga by means of a combination of the density functional theory and the embedded dynamical mean-field theory. We identified orbital selective 5$f$ itinerant-localized (coherent-incoherent) crossovers which could occur upon temperature. Actually, there exist two well-separated electronic coherent temperatures. The higher one is for the $5f_{5/2}$ state [$T_{\text{coh}}(5f_{5/2}) \approx 700$ K], while the lower one is for the $5f_{7/2}$ state [$T_{\text{coh}}(5f_{7/2}) \approx 100$ K]. In addition, the quasiparticle multiples which originate from the many-body transitions among the $5f^{4}$, $5f^{5}$, and $5f^{6}$ electronic configurations, decay gradually. The hybridizations between the localized 5$f$ bands and conduction bands are subdued by high temperature. Consequently, the Fermi surface topology is changed, which signals a temperature-driven electronic Lifshitz transition. Finally, the calculated linear specific heat coefficient $γ$ is approximately 112 mJ / (mol K$^2$) at $T = 80$ K.

KINNEWS and KIRNEWS: Benchmarking Cross-Lingual Text Classification for Kinyarwanda and Kirundi

Recent progress in text classification has been focused on high-resource languages such as English and Chinese. For low-resource languages, amongst them most African languages, the lack of well-annotated data and effective preprocessing, is hindering the progress and the transfer of successful methods. In this paper, we introduce two news datasets (KINNEWS and KIRNEWS) for multi-class classification of news articles in Kinyarwanda and Kirundi, two low-resource African languages. The two languages are mutually intelligible, but while Kinyarwanda has been studied in Natural Language Processing (NLP) to some extent, this work constitutes the first study on Kirundi. Along with the datasets, we provide statistics, guidelines for preprocessing, and monolingual and cross-lingual baseline models. Our experiments show that training embeddings on the relatively higher-resourced Kinyarwanda yields successful cross-lingual transfer to Kirundi. In addition, the design of the created datasets allows for a wider use in NLP beyond text classification in future studies, such as representation learning, cross-lingual learning with more distant languages, or as base for new annotations for tasks such as parsing, POS tagging, and NER. The datasets, stopwords, and pre-trained embeddings are publicly available at https://github.com/Andrews2017/KINNEWS-and-KIRNEWS-Corpus .

Pseudoscalar pair production via off-shell Higgs in composite Higgs models

We propose a new type of search for a pseudoscalar particle $η$ pair produced via an off-shell Higgs, $pp\to h^*\to ηη$. The search is motivated by a composite Higgs model in which the $η$ is extremely narrow and decays almost exclusively into $Zγ$ in the mass range $65$ GeV$\lesssim m_η\lesssim 160$ GeV. We devise an analysis strategy to observe the novel $ZγZγ$ channel and estimate potential bounds on the Higgs-$η$ coupling. The experimental sensitivity to the signatures depends on the power to identify fake photons and on the ability to predict large photon multiplicities. This search allows us to exclude large values of the compositeness scale $f$, being thus complementary to other typical processes.

LoAdaBoost: loss-based AdaBoost federated machine learning with reduced computational complexity on IID and non-IID intensive care data

Intensive care data are valuable for improvement of health care, policy making and many other purposes. Vast amount of such data are stored in different locations, on many different devices and in different data silos. Sharing data among different sources is a big challenge due to regulatory, operational and security reasons. One potential solution is federated machine learning, which is a method that sends machine learning algorithms simultaneously to all data sources, trains models in each source and aggregates the learned models. This strategy allows utilization of valuable data without moving them. One challenge in applying federated machine learning is the possibly different distributions of data from diverse sources. To tackle this problem, we proposed an adaptive boosting method named LoAdaBoost that increases the efficiency of federated machine learning. Using intensive care unit data from hospitals, we investigated the performance of learning in IID and non-IID data distribution scenarios, and showed that the proposed LoAdaBoost method achieved higher predictive accuracy with lower computational complexity than the baseline method.

Temperature dependence of correlated electronic states in archetypal kagome metal CoSn

Hexagonal CoSn is a newly-discovered frustrated kagome metal. It shows close-to-textbook flat bands and orbital-selective Dirac fermions, which are largely associated with its strongly correlated Co-3$d$ orbitals. Because correlated electronic states are easily regulated by external conditions (such as chemical doping, pressure, and temperature), the fate of these kagome-derived electronic bands upon temperature becomes an interesting and unsolved question. In this work, we try to study the temperature-dependent electronic structures of hexagonal CoSn by means of the density functional theory in conjunction with the embedded dynamical mean-field theory. We find that hexagonal CoSn is in close proximity to a Mott insulating state at ambient condition. Special attention is devoted to the evolution of its Co-3$d$ electronic states with respect to temperature. At least six different temperatures (or energy scales), namely $T^{*}$, $T_{\text{FL}}$, $T_{\text{S1}}$ (and $T_{\text{S2}}$), $T_{\text{SF}}$, and $\bar{T}$, are figured out. They are related to stabilization of the "pseudogap" state, emergence of the non-Fermi-liquid phase, onset (and completeness) of the intermediate spin state, occurrence of the spin-frozen phase, beginning of the orbital freezing transition, respectively.

AFDet: Anchor Free One Stage 3D Object Detection

High-efficiency point cloud 3D object detection operated on embedded systems is important for many robotics applications including autonomous driving. Most previous works try to solve it using anchor-based detection methods which come with two drawbacks: post-processing is relatively complex and computationally expensive; tuning anchor parameters is tricky. We are the first to address these drawbacks with an anchor free and Non-Maximum Suppression free one stage detector called AFDet. The entire AFDet can be processed efficiently on a CNN accelerator or a GPU with the simplified post-processing. Without bells and whistles, our proposed AFDet performs competitively with other one stage anchor-based methods on KITTI validation set and Waymo Open Dataset validation set.

Reexaming the ground state and magnetic properties of curium dioxide

The ground state electronic structure and magnetic behaviors of curium dioxide (CmO$_{2}$) are controversial. In general, the formal valence of Cm ions in CmO$_{2}$ should be tetravalent. It implies a $5f^{6.0}$ electronic configuration and a non-magnetic ground state. However, it is in sharp contrast with the large magnetic moment measured by painstaking experiments. In order to clarify this contradiction, we tried to study the ground state electronic structure of CmO$_{2}$ by means of a combination of density functional theory and dynamical mean-field theory. We find that CmO$_{2}$ is a wide-gap charge transfer insulator with strong 5$f$ valence state fluctuation. It belongs to a mixed-valence compound indeed. The predominant electronic configurations for Cm ions are $5f^{6.0}$ and $5f^{7.0}$. The resulting magnetic moment agrees quite well with the experimental value. Therefore, the magnetic puzzle in CmO$_{2}$ can be appropriately explained by the mixed-valence scenario.

1st Place Solution for Waymo Open Dataset Challenge -- 3D Detection and Domain Adaptation

In this technical report, we introduce our winning solution "HorizonLiDAR3D" for the 3D detection track and the domain adaptation track in Waymo Open Dataset Challenge at CVPR 2020. Many existing 3D object detectors include prior-based anchor box design to account for different scales and aspect ratios and classes of objects, which limits its capability of generalization to a different dataset or domain and requires post-processing (e.g. Non-Maximum Suppression (NMS)). We proposed a one-stage, anchor-free and NMS-free 3D point cloud object detector AFDet, using object key-points to encode the 3D attributes, and to learn an end-to-end point cloud object detection without the need of hand-engineering or learning the anchors. AFDet serves as a strong baseline in our winning solution and significant improvements are made over this baseline during the challenges. Specifically, we design stronger networks and enhance the point cloud data using densification and point painting. To leverage camera information, we append/paint additional attributes to each point by projecting them to camera space and gathering image-based perception information. The final detection performance also benefits from model ensemble and Test-Time Augmentation (TTA) in both the 3D detection track and the domain adaptation track. Our solution achieves the 1st place with 77.11% mAPH/L2 and 69.49% mAPH/L2 respectively on the 3D detection track and the domain adaptation track.

2nd Place Solution for Waymo Open Dataset Challenge -- 2D Object Detection

A practical autonomous driving system urges the need to reliably and accurately detect vehicles and persons. In this report, we introduce a state-of-the-art 2D object detection system for autonomous driving scenarios. Specifically, we integrate both popular two-stage detector and one-stage detector with anchor free fashion to yield a robust detection. Furthermore, we train multiple expert models and design a greedy version of the auto ensemble scheme that automatically merges detections from different models. Notably, our overall detection system achieves 70.28 L2 mAP on the Waymo Open Dataset v1.2, ranking the 2nd place in the 2D detection track of the Waymo Open Dataset Challenges.

Localized spin-orbit polaron in magnetic Weyl semimetal Co$_3$Sn$_2$S$_2$

The kagome lattice Co$_3$Sn$_2$S$_2$ exhibits the quintessential topological phenomena of a magnetic Weyl semimetal such as the chiral anomaly and Fermi-arc surface states. Probing its magnetic properties is crucial for understanding this correlated topological state. Here, using spin-polarized scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy (STM/S), we report the discovery of localized spin-orbit polarons (SOPs) with three-fold rotation symmetry nucleated around single-S vacancies in Co$_3$Sn$_2$S$_2$. The SOPs carry a spin-polarized magnetic moment and a large orbital magnetization of a topological origin associated with the Berry phase and the persistent circulating current. Appreciable magneto-elastic coupling of the SOP is detected by atomic force microscope and STM. Our findings suggest that the SOPs can enhance magnetism and stability of the magnetic Weyl nodes for more robust time-reversal-symmetry-breaking topological phenomena. Controlled engineering of the SOPs may pave the way toward practical applications in functional quantum devices.

Protracted Kondo screening and kagome bands in heavy-fermion metal Ce$_{3}$Al

Ce$_{3}$Al is an archetypal heavy-fermion compound with multiple crystalline phases. Here, we try to investigate its electronic structures in the hexagonal phase ($α$-Ce$_{3}$Al) and cubic phase ($β$-Ce$_{3}$Al) by means of a combination of density functional theory and single-site dynamical mean-field theory. We confirm that the 4$f$ valence electrons in both phases are itinerant, accompanied with strong valence state fluctuations. Their 4$f$ band structures are heavily renormalized by electronic correlations, resulting in large effective electron masses. The Kondo screening in Ce$_{3}$Al would be protracted over a wide range of temperature since the single-impurity Kondo temperature $T_{K}$ is much higher than the coherent Kondo temperature $T^{*}_{K}$. Especially, the crystal structure of $α$-Ce$_{3}$Al forms a layered kagome lattice. We observe conspicuous kagome-derived flat bands and Dirac cones (or gaps) in its quasiparticle band structure. Therefore, it is concluded that the hexagonal phase of Ce$_{3}$Al will be a promising candidate of heavy-fermion kagome metal.

Nanosized Monoatomic Palladium Metallic Glass

Physically vitrifying single-element metallic glass requires ultrahigh cooling rates, which are still unachievable for most of the closest-packed metals. Here, we report a facile synthetic strategy for creating mono-atomic palladium metallic glass nanoparticles with a purity of 99.35 +/- 0.23 at% from palladium-silicon liquid droplets using a cooling rate below 1000 K/s. In-situ environmental transmission electron microscopy directly detected the leaching of silicon. Further hydrogen absorption experiment showed that this palladium metallic glass expanded little upon hydrogen uptake, exhibiting a great potential application for hydrogen separation. Our results provide insight into the formation of mono-atomic metallic glass at nanoscale.

Signatures of Hundness in Kagome Metals

By means of the density functional theory in combination with the dynamical mean-field theory, we tried to examine the electronic structure of hexagonal FeGe, in which the Fe atoms form a quasi-2D layered Kagome lattice. We predict that it is a representative Kagome metal characterized by orbital selective Dirac fermions and extremely flat bands. Furthermore, Fe's 3$d$ electrons are strongly correlated. They exhibit quite apparent signatures of electronic correlation induced by Hund's rule coupling, such as sizable differentiation in band renormalization, non-Fermi-liquid behavior, spin-freezing state, and spin-orbital separation. Thus, FeGe can be regarded as an ideal platform to study the interplay of Kagome physics and Hundness. 5

Emergence of quasiparticle multiplets in curium

A combination of the density functional theory and the single-site dynamical mean-field theory is employed to study the electronic structures of various allotropes of elemental curium (Cm-I, Cm-II, and Cm-III). We find that the 5$f$ valence electrons in the high-symmetry Cm-I and Cm-II phases remain localized, while they turn into itinerancy in the low-symmetry monoclinic Cm-III phase. In addition, conspicuous quasiparticle multiplets are identified in the 5$f$ electronic density of states of the Cm-III phase. We believe that it is the many-body transition between $5f^{7}$ and $5f^{8}$ configurations that gives rise to these quasiparticle multiplets. Therefore, the Cm-III phase is probably a new realization of the so-called Racah metal.

Effective classical correspondence of the Mott transition

We derive an effective classical model to describe the Mott transition of the half-filled one-band Hubbard model in the framework of the dynamical mean-field theory with hybridization expansion of the continuous time quantum Monte Carlo. We find a simple two-body interaction of exponential form and reveal a classical correspondence of the Mott transition driven by a logarithmically divergent interaction length. Our work provides an alternative angle to view the Mott physics and suggests a renewed possibility to extend the application of the quantum-to-classical mapping in understanding condensed matter physics

Nature of the 5$f$ electronic structure of plutonium

Plutonium (Pu), in which the 5$f$ valence electrons always wander the boundary between localized and itinerant states, exhibits quite complex crystal structures and unprecedentedly anomalous properties with respect to temperature and alloying. Understanding its chemical and physical properties, especially its 5$f$ electronic structure is one of the central and unsolved topics in condensed matter theory. In the present work, the electronic structures of the six allotropes of Pu (including its $α$, $β$, $γ$, $δ$, $δ'$, and $ε$ phases) at ambient pressure are studied comprehensively by means of the density functional theory in combination with the single-site dynamical mean-field theory. The band structures, total and partial density of states, valence state histograms, 5$f$ orbital occupancies, X-ray branching ratios, and self-energy functions are carefully studied. It is suggested that the $α$, $β$, and $γ$ phases of Pu are typical Racah metals in which the atomic multiple effect dominates near the Fermi level. The calculated results reveal that not only the $δ$ phase, but also all the six allotropes are archetypal mixed-valence metals with remarkable atomic eigenstate fluctuation. In consequence of that, the 5$f$ occupancy $n_{5f}$ is around 5.1 $\sim$ 5.4, which varies with respect to the atomic volume and electronic correlation strength of Pu. The 5$f$ electronic correlation in Pu is moderately orbital-dependent. Moreover, the 5$f$ electrons in the $δ'$ phase are the most correlated and localized.

Unraveling the 4f electronic structures of cerium monopnictides

In order to unveil the 4f electronic structures in cerium monopnictides (CeX, where X = N, P, As, Sb, and Bi), we employed a state-of-the-art first-principles many-body approach, namely the density functional theory in combination with the single-site dynamical mean-field theory, to make detailed calculations. We find that the 4f electrons in CeN are highly itinerant and mixed-valence, showing a prominent quasi-particle peak near the Fermi level. On the contrary, they become well localized and display weak valence fluctuation in CeBi. It means that a 4f itinerant-localized crossover could emerge upon changing the X atom from N to Bi. Moreover, according to the low-energy behaviors of 4f self-energy functions, we could conclude that the 4f electrons in CeX also demonstrate interesting orbital-selective electronic correlations, which are similar to the other cerium-based heavy fermion compounds.
