Experimental demonstration of high-rate measurement-device-independent quantum key distribution over asymmetric channels

Measurement-device-independent quantum key distribution (MDI-QKD) can eliminate all detector side channels and it is practical with current technology. Previous implementations of MDI-QKD all use two symmetric channels with similar losses. However, the secret key rate is severely limited when different channels have different losses. Here we report the results of the first high-rate MDI-QKD experiment over $asymmetric$ channels. By using the recent 7-intensity optimization approach, we demonstrate $>$10x higher key rate than previous best-known protocols for MDI-QKD in the situation of large channel asymmetry, and extend the secure transmission distance by more than 20-50 km in standard telecom fiber. The results have moved MDI-QKD towards widespread applications in practical network settings, where the channel losses are asymmetric and user nodes could be dynamically added or deleted.

A Right-of-Way Based Strategy to Implement Safe and Efficient Driving at Non-Signalized Intersections for Automated Vehicles

Non-signalized intersection is a typical and common scenario for connected and automated vehicles (CAVs). How to balance safety and efficiency remains difficult for researchers. To improve the original Responsibility Sensitive Safety (RSS) driving strategy on the non-signalized intersection, we propose a new strategy in this paper, based on right-of-way assignment (RWA). The performances of RSS strategy, cooperative driving strategy, and RWA based strategy are tested and compared. Testing results indicate that our strategy yields better traffic efficiency than RSS strategy, but not satisfying as the cooperative driving strategy due to the limited range of communication and the lack of long-term planning. However, our new strategy requires much fewer communication costs among vehicles.

Efficient Online Quantum Generative Adversarial Learning Algorithms with Applications

The exploration of quantum algorithms that possess quantum advantages is a central topic in quantum computation and quantum information processing. One potential candidate in this area is quantum generative adversarial learning (QuGAL), which conceptually has exponential advantages over classical adversarial networks. However, the corresponding learning algorithm remains obscured. In this paper, we propose the first quantum generative adversarial learning algorithm-- the quantum multiplicative matrix weight algorithm (QMMW)-- which enables the efficient processing of fundamental tasks. The computational complexity of QMMW is polynomially proportional to the number of training rounds and logarithmically proportional to the input size. The core concept of the proposed algorithm combines QuGAL with online learning. We exploit the implementation of QuGAL with parameterized quantum circuits, and numerical experiments for the task of entanglement test for pure state are provided to support our claims.

Anomalous scalings of the cuprate strange metals from nonlinear electrodynamics

We examine transport in a holographic model which describes, through a nonlinear gauge field sector, generic nonlinear interactions between the charge carriers. Scaling exponents are introduced by using geometries which are nonrelativistic and hyperscaling-violating in the infrared. In the dilute charge limit in which the gauge field sector does not backreact on the geometry, a particularly simple nonlinear theory reproduces the anomalous temperature dependence of the resistivity and Hall angle of the cuprate strange metals, $R \sim T$ and $\cotΘ_H \sim T^2$ while also allowing for a linear entropy $S \sim T$, and predicts that the magnetoresistance for small values of the magnetic field $h$ should scale as $\sim h^2 T^{-4}$. Our study lends evidence to the idea that the strange metal behavior of the cuprates relies crucially on the linear temperature dependence of the entropy.

Accelerating Minibatch Stochastic Gradient Descent using Typicality Sampling

Machine learning, especially deep neural networks, has been rapidly developed in fields including computer vision, speech recognition and reinforcement learning. Although Mini-batch SGD is one of the most popular stochastic optimization methods in training deep networks, it shows a slow convergence rate due to the large noise in gradient approximation. In this paper, we attempt to remedy this problem by building more efficient batch selection method based on typicality sampling, which reduces the error of gradient estimation in conventional Minibatch SGD. We analyze the convergence rate of the resulting typical batch SGD algorithm and compare convergence properties between Minibatch SGD and the algorithm. Experimental results demonstrate that our batch selection scheme works well and more complex Minibatch SGD variants can benefit from the proposed batch selection strategy.

Experimental validation of quantum steering ellipsoids and tests of volume monogamy relations

The set of all qubit states that can be steered to by measurements on a correlated qubit is predicted to form an ellipsoid---called the quantum steering ellipsoid---in the Bloch ball. This ellipsoid provides a simple visual characterisation of the initial 2-qubit state, and various aspects of entanglement are reflected in its geometric properties. We experimentally verify these properties via measurements on many different polarisation-entangled photonic qubit states. Moreover, for pure 3-qubit states, the volumes of the two quantum steering ellipsoids generated by measurements on the first qubit are predicted to satisfy a tight monogamy relation, which is strictly stronger than the well-known monogamy of entanglement for concurrence. We experimentally verify these predictions, using polarisation and path entanglement. We also show experimentally that this monogamy relation can be violated by a mixed entangled state, which nevertheless satisfies a weaker monogamy relation.

Optimization of Molecules via Deep Reinforcement Learning

We present a framework, which we call Molecule Deep $Q$-Networks (MolDQN), for molecule optimization by combining domain knowledge of chemistry and state-of-the-art reinforcement learning techniques (double $Q$-learning and randomized value functions). We directly define modifications on molecules, thereby ensuring 100\% chemical validity. Further, we operate without pre-training on any dataset to avoid possible bias from the choice of that set. Inspired by problems faced during medicinal chemistry lead optimization, we extend our model with multi-objective reinforcement learning, which maximizes drug-likeness while maintaining similarity to the original molecule. We further show the path through chemical space to achieve optimization for a molecule to understand how the model works.

A Roadmap-Path Reshaping Algorithm for Real-Time Motion Planning

Real-time motion planning is a vital function of robotic systems. Different from existing roadmap algorithms which first determine the free space and then determine the collision-free path, researchers recently proposed several convex relaxation based smoothing algorithms which first select an initial path to link the starting configuration and the goal configuration and then reshape this path to meet other requirements (e.g., collision-free conditions) by using convex relaxation. However, convex relaxation based smoothing algorithms often fail to give a satisfactory path, since the initial paths are selected randomly. Moreover, the curvature constraints were not considered in the existing convex relaxation based smoothing algorithms. In this paper, we show that we can first grid the whole configuration space to pick a candidate path and reshape this shortest path to meet our goal. This new algorithm inherits the merits of the roadmap algorithms and the convex feasible set algorithm. We further discuss how to meet the curvature constraints by using both the Beamlet algorithm to select a better initial path and an iterative optimization algorithm to adjust the curvature of the path. Theoretical analyzing and numerical testing results show that it can almost surely find a feasible path and use much less time than the recently proposed convex feasible set algorithm.

Fast MVAE: Joint separation and classification of mixed sources based on multichannel variational autoencoder with auxiliary classifier

This paper proposes an alternative algorithm for multichannel variational autoencoder (MVAE), a recently proposed multichannel source separation approach. While MVAE is notable in its impressive source separation performance, the convergence-guaranteed optimization algorithm and that it allows us to estimate source-class labels simultaneously with source separation, there are still two major drawbacks, i.e., the high computational complexity and unsatisfactory source classification accuracy. To overcome these drawbacks, the proposed method employs an auxiliary classifier VAE, an information-theoretic extension of the conditional VAE, for learning the generative model of the source spectrograms. Furthermore, with the trained auxiliary classifier, we introduce a novel algorithm for the optimization that is able to not only reduce the computational time but also improve the source classification performance. We call the proposed method "fast MVAE (fMVAE)". Experimental evaluations revealed that fMVAE achieved comparative source separation performance to MVAE and about 80% source classification accuracy rate while it reduced about 93% computational time.

Occupancy-map-based rate distortion optimization for video-based point cloud compression

The state-of-the-art video-based point cloud compression scheme projects the 3D point cloud to 2D patch by patch and organizes the patches into frames to compress them using the efficient video compression scheme. Such a scheme shows a good trade-off between the number of points projected and the video continuity to utilize the video compression scheme. However, some unoccupied pixels between different patches are compressed using almost the same quality with the occupied pixels, which will lead to the waste of lots of bits since the unoccupied pixels are useless for the reconstructed point cloud. In this paper, we propose to consider only the rate instead of the rate distortion cost for the unoccupied pixels during the rate distortion optimization process. The proposed scheme can be applied to both the geometry and attribute frames. The experimental results show that the proposed algorithm can achieve an average of 11.9% and 15.4% bitrate savings for the geometry and attribute, respectively.

Cooperative Driving at Unsignalized Intersections Using Tree Search

In this paper, we propose a new cooperative driving strategy for connected and automated vehicles (CAVs) at unsignalized intersections. Based on the tree representation of the solution space for the passing order, we combine Monte Carlo tree search (MCTS) and some heuristic rules to find a nearly global-optimal passing order (leaf node) within a very short planning time. Testing results show that this new strategy can keep a good tradeoff between performance and computation flexibility.

Homogeneous solutions of stationary Navier-Stokes equations with isolated singularities on the unit sphere. III. Two singularities

All $(-1)$-homogeneous axisymmetric no-swirl solutions of incompressible stationary Navier-Stokes equations in three dimension which are smooth on the unit sphere minus north and south poles have been classified in our earlier work as a four dimensional surface with boundary. In this paper, we establish near the no-swirl solution surface existence, non-existence and uniqueness results on $(-1)$-homogeneous axisymmetric solutions with nonzero swirl which are smooth on the unit sphere minus north and south poles.

Holographic Fermions in Striped Phases

We examine the fermionic response in a holographic model of a low temperature striped phase, working for concreteness with the setup we studied in [Cremonini:2016rbd,Cremonini:2017usb], in which a U(1) symmetry and translational invariance are broken spontaneously at the same time. We include an ionic lattice that breaks translational symmetry explicitly in the UV of the theory. Thus, this construction realizes spontaneous crystallization on top of a background lattice. We solve the Dirac equation for a probe fermion in the associated background geometry using numerical techniques, and explore the interplay between spontaneous and explicit breaking of translations. We note that in our model the breaking of the U(1) symmetry doesn't play a role in the analysis of the fermionic spectral function. We investigate under which conditions a Fermi surface can form and focus in particular on how the ionic lattice affects its structure. When the ionic lattice becomes sufficiently strong the spectral weight peaks broaden, denoting a gradual disappearance of the Fermi surface along the symmetry breaking direction. This phenomenon occurs even in the absence of spontaneously generated stripes. The resulting Fermi surface appears to consist of detached segments reminiscent of Fermi arcs.

Rebooting Research on Detecting Repackaged Android Apps: Literature Review and Benchmark

Repackaging is a serious threat to the Android ecosystem as it deprives app developers of their benefits, contributes to spreading malware on users' devices, and increases the workload of market maintainers. In the space of six years, the research around this specific issue has produced 57 approaches which do not readily scale to millions of apps or are only evaluated on private datasets without, in general, tool support available to the community. Through a systematic literature review of the subject, we argue that the research is slowing down, where many state-of-the-art approaches have reported high-performance rates on closed datasets, which are unfortunately difficult to replicate and to compare against. In this work, we propose to reboot the research in repackaged app detection by providing a literature review that summarises the challenges and current solutions for detecting repackaged apps and by providing a large dataset that supports replications of existing solutions and implications of new research directions. We hope that these contributions will re-activate the direction of detecting repackaged apps and spark innovative approaches going beyond the current state-of-the-art.

Efficient prediction of 3D electron densities using machine learning

The Kohn-Sham scheme of density functional theory is one of the most widely used methods to solve electronic structure problems for a vast variety of atomistic systems across different scientific fields. While the method is fast relative to other first principles methods and widely successful, the computational time needed is still not negligible, making it difficult to perform calculations for very large systems or over long time-scales. In this submission, we revisit a machine learning model capable of learning the electron density and the corresponding energy functional based on a set of training examples. It allows us to bypass solving the Kohn-Sham equations, providing a significant decrease in computation time. We specifically focus on the machine learning formulation of the Hohenberg-Kohn map and its decomposability. We give results and discuss challenges, limits and future directions.

An Orchestrated Empirical Study on Deep Learning Frameworks and Platforms

Deep learning (DL) has recently achieved tremendous success in a variety of cutting-edge applications, e.g., image recognition, speech and natural language processing, and autonomous driving. Besides the available big data and hardware evolution, DL frameworks and platforms play a key role to catalyze the research, development, and deployment of DL intelligent solutions. However, the difference in computation paradigm, architecture design and implementation of existing DL frameworks and platforms brings challenges for DL software development, deployment, maintenance, and migration. Up to the present, it still lacks a comprehensive study on how current diverse DL frameworks and platforms influence the DL software development process. In this paper, we initiate the first step towards the investigation on how existing state-of-the-art DL frameworks (i.e., TensorFlow, Theano, and Torch) and platforms (i.e., server/desktop, web, and mobile) support the DL software development activities. We perform an in-depth and comparative evaluation on metrics such as learning accuracy, DL model size, robustness, and performance, on state-of-the-art DL frameworks across platforms using two popular datasets MNIST and CIFAR-10. Our study reveals that existing DL frameworks still suffer from compatibility issues, which becomes even more severe when it comes to different platforms. We pinpoint the current challenges and opportunities towards developing high quality and compatible DL systems. To ignite further investigation along this direction to address urgent industrial demands of intelligent solutions, we make all of our assembled feasible toolchain and dataset publicly available.

12-photon entanglement and scalable scattershot boson sampling with optimal entangled-photon pairs from parametric down-conversion

Entangled photon sources with simultaneously near-unity heralding efficiency and indistinguishability are the fundamental elements for scalable photonic quantum technologies. We design and realize a degenerate entangled-photon source from an ultrafast pulsed laser pumped spontaneous parametric down-conversion (SPDC), which show simultaneously ~97% heralding efficiency and ~96% indistinguishability between independent single photons. Such a high-efficiency and frequency-uncorrelated SPDC source allows generation of the first 12-photon genuine entanglement with a state fidelity of 0.572(24). We further demonstrate a blueprint of scalable scattershot boson sampling using 12 SPDC sources and a 12*12-modes interferometer for three-, four-, and five-boson sampling, which yields count rates more than four orders of magnitudes higher than all previous SPDC experiments. Our work immediately enables high-efficiency implementations of multiplexing, scattershot boson sampling, and heralded creation of remotely entangled photons, opening up a promising pathway to scalable photonic quantum technologies.

Generalized Multichannel Variational Autoencoder for Underdetermined Source Separation

This paper deals with a multichannel audio source separation problem under underdetermined conditions. Multichannel Non-negative Matrix Factorization (MNMF) is one of powerful approaches, which adopts the NMF concept for source power spectrogram modeling. This concept is also employed in Independent Low-Rank Matrix Analysis (ILRMA), a special class of the MNMF framework formulated under determined conditions. While these methods work reasonably well for particular types of sound sources, one limitation is that they can fail to work for sources with spectrograms that do not comply with the NMF model. To address this limitation, an extension of ILRMA called the Multichannel Variational Autoencoder (MVAE) method was recently proposed, where a Conditional VAE (CVAE) is used instead of the NMF model for source power spectrogram modeling. This approach has shown to perform impressively in determined source separation tasks thanks to the representation power of DNNs. While the original MVAE method was formulated under determined mixing conditions, this paper generalizes it so that it can also deal with underdetermined cases. We call the proposed framework the Generalized MVAE (GMVAE). The proposed method was evaluated on a underdetermined source separation task of separating out three sources from two microphone inputs. Experimental results revealed that the GMVAE method achieved better performance than the MNMF method.
