Tunable even- and odd-denominator fractional quantum Hall states in trilayer graphene

The fractional quantum Hall (FQH) states are exotic quantum many-body phases whose elementary charged excitations are neither bosons nor fermions but anyons, obeying fractional braiding statistics. While most FQH states are believed to have Abelian anyons, the Moore-Read type states with even denominators, appearing at half filling of a Landau level (LL), are predicted to possess non-Abelian excitations with appealing potentials in topological quantum computation. These states, however, depend sensitively on the orbital contents of the single-particle LL wavefunction and the mixing between different LLs. Although they have been observed in a few materials, their non-Abelian statistics still awaits experimental confirmation. Here we show magnetotransport measurements on Bernal-stacked trilayer graphene (TLG), whose unique multiband structure facilitates the interlaced LL mixing, which can be controlled by external magnetic and displacement fields. We observe a series of robust FQH states including even-denominator ones at filling factors $ν=-9/2$, $-3/2$, $3/2$ and $9/2$. In addition, we are able to finetune the LL mixing and crossings to drive quantum phase transitions of these half-filling states and their neighboring odd-denominator ones, exhibiting a related emerging and waning behavior. Our results establish TLG as a controllable system for tuning the weights of LL orbitals and mixing strength, and a fresh platform to seek for non-Abelian quasi-particles.

FLTracer: Accurate Poisoning Attack Provenance in Federated Learning

Federated Learning (FL) is a promising distributed learning approach that enables multiple clients to collaboratively train a shared global model. However, recent studies show that FL is vulnerable to various poisoning attacks, which can degrade the performance of global models or introduce backdoors into them. In this paper, we first conduct a comprehensive study on prior FL attacks and detection methods. The results show that all existing detection methods are only effective against limited and specific attacks. Most detection methods suffer from high false positives, which lead to significant performance degradation, especially in not independent and identically distributed (non-IID) settings. To address these issues, we propose FLTracer, the first FL attack provenance framework to accurately detect various attacks and trace the attack time, objective, type, and poisoned location of updates. Different from existing methodologies that rely solely on cross-client anomaly detection, we propose a Kalman filter-based cross-round detection to identify adversaries by seeking the behavior changes before and after the attack. Thus, this makes it resilient to data heterogeneity and is effective even in non-IID settings. To further improve the accuracy of our detection method, we employ four novel features and capture their anomalies with the joint decisions. Extensive evaluations show that FLTracer achieves an average true positive rate of over $96.88\%$ at an average false positive rate of less than $2.67\%$, significantly outperforming SOTA detection methods. \footnote{Code is available at \url{https://github.com/Eyr3/FLTracer}.}

Entropy of monomial algebras and derived categories

Let A be a finitely presented associative monomial algebra. We study the category qgr(A) which is a quotient of the category of graded finitely presented A-modules by the finite-dimensional ones. As this category plays a role of the category of coherent sheaves on the corresponding noncommutative variety, we consider its bounded derived category. We calculate the categorical entropy of the Serre twist functor this derived category and show that it is equal to logarithm of the entropy of the algebra A itself. Moreover, we relate these two kinds of entropy with the topological entropy of the Ufnarovski graph of A and the entropy of the path algebra of the graph. If A is a path algebra of some quiver, the categorical entropy is equal to the logarithm of the spectral radius of the quiver's adjacency matrix.

Observation of first-order quantum phase transitions and ferromagnetism in twisted double bilayer graphene

Twisted graphene multilayers are highly tunable flatband systems for developing new phases of matter. Thus far, while orbital ferromagnetism has been observed in valley polarized phases, the long-range orders of other correlated phases as well as the quantum phase transitions between different orders mostly remain unknown. Here, we report an observation of Coulomb interaction driven first-order quantum phase transitions and ferromagnetism in twisted double bilayer graphene (TDBG). At zero magnetic field, the transitions are revealed in a series of step-like abrupt resistance jumps with prominent hysteresis loop when either the displacement field (D) or the carrier density (n) is tuned across symmetry-breaking boundary near half filling, indicating a formation of ordered domains. It is worth noting that the good turnability and switching of these states gives a rise to a memory performance with a large on/off ratio. Moreover, when both spin and valley play the roles at finite magnetic field, we observe abundant first-order quantum phase transitions among normal metallic states from charge neutral point, orbital ferromagnetic states from quarter filling, and spin-polarized states from half filling. We interpret these first-order phase transitions in the picture of phase separations and spin domain percolations driven by multi-field tunable Coulomb interactions, in agreement with Lifshitz transition from Hartree-Fock calculations. The observed multi-filed tunable domain structure and its hysteresis resembles the characteristics of multiferroics, revealing intriguing magnetoelectric properties. Our result enriches the correlated phase diagram in TDBG for discovering novel exotic phases and quantum phase transitions, and it would benefit other twisted moiré systems as well.

Quantum oscillations in field-induced correlated insulators of a moiré superlattice

We report an observation of quantum oscillations (QOs) in the correlated insulators with valley anisotropy of twisted double bilayer graphene (TDBG). The anomalous QOs are best captured in the magneto resistivity oscillations of the insulators at v = -2, with a period of 1/B and an oscillation amplitude as high as 150 kΩ. The QOs can survive up to ~10 K, and above 12 K, the insulating behaviors are dominant. The QOs of the insulator are strongly D dependent: the carrier density extracted from the 1/B periodicity decreases almost linearly with D from -0.7 to -1.1 V/nm, suggesting a reduced Fermi surface; the effective mass from Lifshitz-Kosevich analysis depends nonlinearly on D, reaching a minimal value of 0.1 me at D = ~ -1.0 V/nm. Similar observations of QOs are also found at v = 2, as well as in other devices without graphite gate. We interpret the D sensitive QOs of the correlated insulators in the picture of band inversion. By reconstructing an inverted band model with the measured effective mass and Fermi surface, the density of state at the gap, calculated from thermal broadened Landau levels, agrees qualitatively with the observed QOs in the insulators. While more theoretical understandings are needed in the future to fully account for the anomalous QOs in this moiré system, our study suggests that TDBG is an excellent platform to discover exotic phases where correlation and topology are at play.

Supercurrent, Multiple Andreev Reflections and Shapiro Steps in InAs Nanosheet Josephson Junctions

High-quality free-standing InAs nanosheets are emerging layered semiconductor materials with potentials in designing planar Josephson junction devices for novel physics studies due to their unique properties including strong spin-orbit couplings, large Landé g-factors and the two dimensional nature. Here, we report an experimental study of proximity induced superconductivity in planar Josephson junction devices made from free-standing InAs nanosheets. The nanosheets are grown by molecular beam epitaxy and the Josephson junction devices are fabricated by directly contacting the nanosheets with superconductor Al electrodes. The fabricated devices are explored by low-temperature carrier transport measurements. The measurements show that the devices exhibit a gate-tunable supercurrent, multiple Andreev reflections, and a good quality superconductor-semiconductor interface. The superconducting characteristics of the Josephson junctions are investigated at different magnetic fields and temperatures, and are analyzed based on the Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) theory. The measurements of ac Josephson effect are also conducted under microwave radiations with different radiation powers and frequencies, and integer Shapiro steps are observed. Our work demonstrates that InAs nanosheet based hybrid devices are desired systems for investigating forefront physics, such as the two-dimensional topological superconductivity.

Magnetic field filtering of the hinge supercurrent in unconventional metal NiTe$_2$-based Josephson junctions

Topological materials with boundary (surface/edge/hinge) states have attracted tremendous research interest. Besides, unconventional (obstructed atomic) materials have recently drawn lots of attention owing to their obstructed boundary states. Experimentally, Josephson junctions (JJs) constructed on materials with boundary states produce the peculiar boundary supercurrent, which was utilized as a powerful diagnostic approach. Here, we report the observations of conspicuous hinge supercurrent in NiTe$_2$-based JJs. Particularly, applying an in-plane magnetic field along the Josephson current could rapidly suppress the bulk supercurrent and retain the nearly pure hinge supercurrent, namely the magnetic field filtering of supercurrent. Further systematic comparative analysis and theoretical calculations demonstrate the existence of unconventional nature and obstructed hinge states in NiTe$_2$. Our results revealed the unique hinge states in unconventional metal NiTe$_2$, and demonstrated in-plane magnetic field as an efficient method to filter out the futile bulk contributions and thereby to highlight the hinge states hidden in topological/unconventional materials.

Quantifying quantum coherence of multiple-charge states in tunable Josephson junctions

Coherence and tunneling play central roles in quantum phenomena. In a tunneling event, the time that a particle spends inside the barrier has been fiercely debated. This problem becomes more complex when tunneling repeatedly occurs back and forth, and when involving many particles. Here we report the measurement of the coherence time of various charge states tunneling in a nanowire-based tunable Josephson junction; including single charges, multiple charges, and Cooper pairs. We studied all the charge tunneling processes using Landau-Zener-Stückelberg-Majorana (LZSM) interferometry, and observed high-quality interference patterns. In particular, the coherence time of the charge states was extracted from the interference fringes in Fourier space. In addition, our measurements show the break-up of Cooper pairs, from a macroscopic quantum coherent state to individual particle states. Besides the fundamental research interest, our results also establish LZSM interferometry as a powerful technique to explore the coherence time of charges in hybrid devices.

Gate-tunable negative differential conductance in hybrid semiconductor-superconductor devices

Negative differential conductance (NDC) manifests as a significant characteristic of various underlying physics and transport processes in hybrid superconducting devices. In this work, we report the observation of gate-tunable NDC outside the superconducting energy gap on two types of hybrid semiconductor-superconductor devices, i.e., normal metal-superconducting nanowire-normal metal and normal metal-superconducting nanowire-superconductor devices. Specifically, we study the dependence of the NDCs on back-gate voltage and magnetic field. When the back-gate voltage decreases, these NDCs weaken and evolve into positive differential conductance dips; and meanwhile they move away from the superconducting gap towards high bias voltage, and disappear eventually. In addition, with the increase of magnetic field, the NDCs/dips follow the evolution of the superconducting gap, and disappear when the gap closes. We interpret these observations and reach a good agreement by combining the Blonder-Tinkham-Klapwijk (BTK) model and the critical supercurrent effect in the nanowire, which we call the BTK-supercurrent model. Our results provide an in-depth understanding of the tunneling transport in hybrid semiconductor-superconductor devices.

WeSinger 2: Fully Parallel Singing Voice Synthesis via Multi-Singer Conditional Adversarial Training

This paper aims to introduce a robust singing voice synthesis (SVS) system to produce very natural and realistic singing voices efficiently by leveraging the adversarial training strategy. On one hand, we designed simple but generic random area conditional discriminators to help supervise the acoustic model, which can effectively avoid the over-smoothed spectrogram prediction and improve the expressiveness of SVS. On the other hand, we subtly combined the spectrogram with the frame-level linearly-interpolated F0 sequence as the input for the neural vocoder, which is then optimized with the help of multiple adversarial conditional discriminators in the waveform domain and multi-scale distance functions in the frequency domain. The experimental results and ablation studies concluded that, compared with our previous auto-regressive work, our new system can produce high-quality singing voices efficiently by fine-tuning different singing datasets covering from several minutes to a few hours. A large number of synthesized songs with different timbres are available online https://zzw922cn.github.io/wesinger2 and we highly recommend readers to listen to them.

Bi2O2Se nanowires presenting high mobility and strong spin-orbit coupling

Systematic electrical transport characterizations were performed on high-quality Bi2O2Se nanowires to illustrate its great transport properties and further application potentials in spintronics. Bi2O2Se nanowires synthesized by chemical vapor deposition method presented a high field-effect mobility up to 1.34*104 cm2V-1s-1, and exhibited ballistic transport in the low back-gate voltage (Vg) regime where conductance plateaus were observed. When further increasing the electron density by increasing Vg, we entered the phase coherent regime and weak antilocalization (WAL) was observed. The spin relaxation length extracted from the WAL was found to be gate tunable, ranging from ~100 nm to ~250 nm and reaching a stronger spin-obit coupling (SOC) than the two-dimensional counterpart (flakes). We attribute the strong SOC and the gate tunability to the presence of a surface accumulation layer which induces a strong inversion asymmetry on the surface. Such scenario was supported by the observation of two Shubnikov-de Haas oscillation frequencies that correspond to two types of carriers, one on the surface, and the other in the bulk. The high-quality Bi2O2Se nanowires with a high mobility and a strong SOC can act as a very prospective material in future spintronics.

Quasiparticle poisoning rate in a superconducting transmon qubit involving Majorana zero modes

Majorana zero modes have been attracting considerable attention because of their prospective applications in fault-tolerant topological quantum computing. In recent years, some schemes have been proposed to detect and manipulate Majorana zero modes using superconducting qubits. However, manipulating and reading the Majorana zero modes must be kept in the time window of quasiparticle poisoning. In this work, we study the problem of quasiparticle poisoning in a split transmon qubit containing hybrid Josephson junctions involving Majorana zero modes. We show that Majorana coupling will cause parity mixing and 4π Josephson effect. In addition, we obtained the expression of qubit parameter-dependent parity switching rate and demonstrated that quasiparticle poisoning can be greatly suppressed by reducing E_J/E_C via qubit design.

Privacy-Utility Balanced Voice De-Identification Using Adversarial Examples

Faced with the threat of identity leakage during voice data publishing, users are engaged in a privacy-utility dilemma when enjoying convenient voice services. Existing studies employ direct modification or text-based re-synthesis to de-identify users' voices, but resulting in inconsistent audibility in the presence of human participants. In this paper, we propose a voice de-identification system, which uses adversarial examples to balance the privacy and utility of voice services. Instead of typical additive examples inducing perceivable distortions, we design a novel convolutional adversarial example that modulates perturbations into real-world room impulse responses. Benefit from this, our system could preserve user identity from exposure by Automatic Speaker Identification (ASI) while remaining the voice perceptual quality for non-intrusive de-identification. Moreover, our system learns a compact speaker distribution through a conditional variational auto-encoder to sample diverse target embeddings on demand. Combining diverse target generation and input-specific perturbation construction, our system enables any-to-any identify transformation for adaptive de-identification. Experimental results show that our system could achieve 98% and 79% successful de-identification on mainstream ASIs and commercial systems with an objective Mel cepstral distortion of 4.31dB and a subjective mean opinion score of 4.48.

FBNet: Feedback Network for Point Cloud Completion

The rapid development of point cloud learning has driven point cloud completion into a new era. However, the information flows of most existing completion methods are solely feedforward, and high-level information is rarely reused to improve low-level feature learning. To this end, we propose a novel Feedback Network (FBNet) for point cloud completion, in which present features are efficiently refined by rerouting subsequent fine-grained ones. Firstly, partial inputs are fed to a Hierarchical Graph-based Network (HGNet) to generate coarse shapes. Then, we cascade several Feedback-Aware Completion (FBAC) Blocks and unfold them across time recurrently. Feedback connections between two adjacent time steps exploit fine-grained features to improve present shape generations. The main challenge of building feedback connections is the dimension mismatching between present and subsequent features. To address this, the elaborately designed point Cross Transformer exploits efficient information from feedback features via cross attention strategy and then refines present features with the enhanced feedback features. Quantitative and qualitative experiments on several datasets demonstrate the superiority of proposed FBNet compared to state-of-the-art methods on point completion task.

WeSinger: Data-augmented Singing Voice Synthesis with Auxiliary Losses

In this paper, we develop a new multi-singer Chinese neural singing voice synthesis (SVS) system named WeSinger. To improve the accuracy and naturalness of synthesized singing voice, we design several specifical modules and techniques: 1) A deep bi-directional LSTM-based duration model with multi-scale rhythm loss and post-processing step; 2) A Transformer-alike acoustic model with progressive pitch-weighted decoder loss; 3) a 24 kHz pitch-aware LPCNet neural vocoder to produce high-quality singing waveforms; 4) A novel data augmentation method with multi-singer pre-training for stronger robustness and naturalness. To our knowledge, WeSinger is the first SVS system to adopt 24 kHz LPCNet and multi-singer pre-training simultaneously. Both quantitative and qualitative evaluation results demonstrate the effectiveness of WeSinger in terms of accuracy and naturalness, and WeSinger achieves state-of-the-art performance on the recent public Chinese singing corpus Opencpop\footnote{https://wenet.org.cn/opencpop/}. Some synthesized singing samples are available online\footnote{https://zzw922cn.github.io/wesinger/}.

Continuously Doping Bi 2 Sr 2 CaCu 2 O 8+δ into Electron-Doped Superconductor by CaH 2 Annealing Method

As a typical hole-doped cuprate superconductor, Bi 2 Sr 2 CaCu 2 O 8+δ (Bi2212) carrier doping is mostly determined by its oxygen content. Traditional doping methods can regulate its doping level within the range of hole doping. Here we report the first application of CaH 2 annealing method in regulating the doping level of Bi2212. By continuously controlling the anneal time, a series of differently doped samples can be obtained. The combined experimental results of x-ray diffraction, scanning transmission electron microscopy, resistance and Hall measurements demonstrate that the CaH 2 induced topochemical reaction can effectively change the oxygen content of Bi2212 within a very wide range, even switching from hole doping to electron doping. We also found evidence of a low-T c superconducting phase in the electron doping side.

Tunable wavefront control in the visible spectrum using low-loss chalcogenide phase change metasurfaces

All-dielectric metasurfaces provide unique solutions for advanced wavefront manipulation of light with complete control of amplitude and phase at sub-wavelength scales. One limitation, however, for most of these devices is the lack of any post-fabrication tunability of their response. To break this limit, a promising approach is employing phase-change-materials (PCM), which provide a fast, low energy and non-volatile means to endow metasurfaces with a switching mechanism. In this regard, great advancements have been done in the mid infrared and near infrared spectrum using different chalcogenides. In the visible spectral range, however, very few devices have demonstrated full phase manipulation, high efficiencies, and reversible switching. Here, we experimentally demonstrate a tunable all-dielectric Huygens metasurface made of antimony sulfide (Sb2S3) PCM, a low loss and high-index material in the visible spectral range with a large contrast (nearly 0.5) between its amorphous and crystalline states. We show close to 2pi phase modulation with high associated transmittance and use it to create switchable beam steering and holographic display devices. These novel chalcogenide PCM metasurfaces have the potential to emerge as a platform for next generation spatial light modulators and to impact application areas such as tunable and adaptive flat optics, LiDAR, and many more.

Asymmetric Fraunhofer pattern in Josephson junctions from heterodimensional superlattice V$_5$S$_8$

Introduction of spin-orbit coupling (SOC) in a Josephson junction (JJ) gives rise to unusual Josephson effects. We investigate JJs based on a newly discovered heterodimensional superlattice V$_5$S$_8$ with a special form of SOC. The unique homointerface of our JJs enables elimination of extrinsic effects due to interfaces and disorder. We observe asymmetric Fraunhofer patterns with respect to both the perpendicular magnetic field and the current. The asymmetry is influenced by an in-plane magnetic field. Analysis of the pattern points to a nontrivial spatial distribution of the Josephson current that is intrinsic to the SOC in V$_5$S$_8$.
