Small Covers, infra-solvmanifolds and curvature

It is shown that a small cover (resp. real moment-angle manifold) over a simple polytope is an infra-solvmanifold if and only if it is diffeomorphic to a real Bott manifold (resp. flat torus). Moreover, we obtain several equivalent conditions for a small cover being homeomorphic to a real Bott manifold. In addition, we study Riemannian metrics on small covers and real moment-angle manifolds with certain conditions on the Ricci or sectional curvature. We will see that these curvature conditions put very strong restrictions on the topology of the corresponding small covers and real moment-angle manifolds and the combinatorial structure of the underlying simple polytopes.

Orbital Origin of Extremely Anisotropic Superconducting Gap in Nematic Phase of FeSe Superconductor

The iron-based superconductors are characterized by multiple-orbital physics where all the five Fe 3$d$ orbitals get involved. The multiple-orbital nature gives rise to various novel phenomena like orbital-selective Mott transition, nematicity and orbital fluctuation that provide a new route for realizing superconductivity. The complexity of multiple-orbital also asks to disentangle the relationship between orbital, spin and nematicity, and to identify dominant orbital ingredients that dictate superconductivity. The bulk FeSe superconductor provides an ideal platform to address these issues because of its simple crystal structure and unique coexistence of superconductivity and nematicity. However, the orbital nature of the low energy electronic excitations and its relation to the superconducting gap remain controversial. Here we report direct observation of highly anisotropic Fermi surface and extremely anisotropic superconducting gap in the nematic state of FeSe superconductor by high resolution laser-based angle-resolved photoemission measurements. We find that the low energy excitations of the entire hole pocket at the Brillouin zone center are dominated by the single $d_{xz}$ orbital. The superconducting gap exhibits an anti-correlation relation with the $d_{xz}$ spectral weight near the Fermi level, i.e., the gap size minimum (maximum) corresponds to the maximum (minimum) of the $d_{xz}$ spectral weight along the Fermi surface. These observations provide new insights in understanding the orbital origin of the extremely anisotropic superconducting gap in FeSe superconductor and the relation between nematicity and superconductivity in the iron-based superconductors.

Fano resonance of radiative direction in Krestchmann configuration induced by strong coupling

We investigate the strong coupling phenomenon in Kretschmann configuration involving molecular J-aggregates by using surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) as a light source. SPPs are injected in molecular J-aggregates and propagate along the interface between molecular J-aggregates and the metal film. Both the classical method and Finite difference time domain method are used to show the radiative characteristics of light converted from SPPs in our proposed structure, with the results from the two methods being consistent with each other. Our results show that the radiative angle versus the wavelength shows a Fano line shape and the conversion efficiency of SPPs into light exhibits the strong coupling phenomenon in form of Rabi splitting. Our structure is quite sensitive to the wavelength, which has potential applications in sensing, lasing, optical switching, and nonlinear slow-light devices.

Femtosecond pulse with THz repetition frequency based on strong coupling between quantum emitters and a plasmonic resonator

Nanoscale pulsed light is highly desirable in nano-integrated optics. In this letter, we obtained femtosecond pulses with THz repetition frequency via the strong coupling between quantum emitters (QEs) and plasmonic resonators. Our structure consists of a V-groove (VG) plasmonic resonator and a nanowire embedded with two-level QEs. The influences of the incident light intensity and QE number density on the transmission response for this hybrid system are investigated through semi-classical theory and simulation. It is found that the transmission response can be modulated to the pulse form. The reason is the strong coupling causes the output power of nanowire to behave as an oscillating form, the oscillating output power in turn causes the field amplitude in the resonator to oscillate over time. A feedback system is formed between the plasmonic resonator and the QEs in nanowire. This provides a new method for generating narrow pulsed lasers with ultrahigh repetition frequency in plasmonic systems using a continous wave input, which has potential applications in generating optical clock signals at the nanoscale.

Product states and Schmidt rank of mutually unbiased bases in dimension six

We show that if a set of four mutually unbiased bases (MUBs) in $\mathbb{C}^6$ exists and contains the identity, then any other basis in the set contains at most two product states and at the same time has Schmidt rank at least three. Here both the product states and the Schmidt rank are defined over the bipartite space $\mathbb{C}^2\otimes\mathbb{C}^3$. We also investigate the connection of the Sinkhorn normal form of unitary matrices to the fact that there is at least one vector unbiased to any two orthonormal bases in any dimension.

Dynamic Mobile Edge Caching with Location Differentiation

Mobile edge caching enables content delivery directly within the radio access network, which effectively alleviates the backhaul burden and reduces round-trip latency. To fully exploit the edge resources, the most popular contents should be identified and cached. Observing that content popularity varies greatly at different locations, to maximize local hit rate, this paper proposes an online learning algorithm that dynamically predicts content hit rate, and makes location-differentiated caching decisions. Specifically, a linear model is used to estimate the future hit rate. Considering the variations in user demand, a perturbation is added to the estimation to account for uncertainty. The proposed learning algorithm requires no training phase, and hence is adaptive to the time-varying content popularity profile. Theoretical analysis indicates that the proposed algorithm asymptotically approaches the optimal policy in the long term. Extensive simulations based on real world traces show that, the proposed algorithm achieves higher hit rate and better adaptiveness to content popularity fluctuation, compared with other schemes.

On descriptions of products of simplices

We give several new criteria to judge whether a simple convex polytope in a Euclidean space is combinatorially equivalent to a product of simplices. These criteria are mixtures of combinatorial, geometrical and topological conditions that are inspired by the ideas from toric topology.

Evidence of Electron-Hole Imbalance in WTe2 from High-Resolution Angle-Resolved Photoemission Spectroscopy

WTe2 has attracted a great deal of attention because it exhibits extremely large and nonsaturating magnetoresistance. The underlying origin of such a giant magnetoresistance is still under debate. Utilizing laser-based angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy with high energy and momentum resolutions, we reveal the complete electronic structure of WTe2. This makes it possible to determine accurately the electron and hole concentrations and their temperature dependence. We find that, with increasing the temperature, the overall electron concentration increases while the total hole concentration decreases. It indicates that the electron-hole compensation, if it exists, can only occur in a narrow temperature range, and in most of the temperature range there is an electron-hole imbalance. Our results are not consistent with the perfect electron-hole compensation picture that is commonly considered to be the cause of the unusual magnetoresistance in WTe2. We identified a flat band near the Brillouin zone center that is close to the Fermi level and exhibits a pronounced temperature dependence. Such a flat band can play an important role in dictating the transport properties of WTe2. Our results provide new insight on understanding the origin of the unusual magnetoresistance in WTe2.

Universal controlled-phase gate with cat-state qubits in circuit QED

Cat-state qubits (qubits encoded with cat states) have recently drawn intensive attention due to their enhanced life times with quantum error correction. We here propose a method to implement a universal controlled-phase gate of two cat-state qubits, via two microwave resonators coupled to a superconducting transmon qutrit. During the gate operation, the qutrit remains in the ground state; thus decoherence from the qutrit is greatly suppressed. This proposal requires only two basic operations and neither classical pulse nor measurement is needed; therefore the gate realization is simple. Numerical simulations show that high-fidelity implementation of this gate is feasible with current circuit QED technology. The proposal is quite general and can be applied to implement the proposed gate with two microwave resonators or two optical cavities coupled to a single three-level natural or artificial atom.

Mutually unbiased bases in dimension six containing a product-vector basis

Excluding the existence of four MUBs in $\bbC^6$ is an open problem in quantum information. We investigate the number of product vectors in the set of four mutually unbiased bases (MUBs) in dimension six, by assuming that the set exists and contains a product-vector basis. We show that in most cases the number of product vectors in each of the remaining three MUBs is at most two. We further construct the exceptional case in which the three MUBs respectively contain at most three, two and two product vectors. We also investigate the number of vectors mutually unbiased to an orthonormal basis.

Electronic structure of heavy fermion system CePt2In7 from angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy

We have carried out high-resolution angle-resolved photoemission measurements on the Cebased heavy fermion compound CePt2In7 that exhibits stronger two-dimensional character than the prototypical heavy fermion system CeCoIn5. Multiple Fermi surface sheets and a complex band structure are clearly resolved. We have also performed detailed band structure calculations on CePt2In7. The good agreement found between our measurements and the calculations suggests that the band renormalization effect is rather weak in CePt2In7. A comparison of the common features of the electronic structure of CePt2In7 and CeCoIn5 indicates that CeCoIn5 shows a much stronger band renormalization effect than CePt2In7. These results provide new information for understanding the heavy fermion behaviors and unconventional superconductivity in Ce-based heavy fermion systems.

Electronic structure and nematic phase transition in superconducting multi-layer FeSe films grown by pulsed laser deposition method

We report comprehensive angle-resolved photoemission investigations on the electronic structure of single crystal multiple-layer FeSe films grown on CaF2 substrate by pulsed laser deposition (PLD) method. Measurements on FeSe/CaF2 samples with different superconducting transition temperatures Tc of 4 K, 9 K and 14 K reveal electronic difference in their Fermi surface and band structure. Indication of the nematic phase transition is observed from temperature-dependent measurements of these samples; the nematic transition temperature is 140-160 K, much higher than 90 K for the bulk FeSe. Potassium deposition is applied onto the surface of these samples; the nematic phase is suppressed by potassium deposition which introduces electrons to these FeSe films and causes a pronounced electronic structure change. We compared and discussed the electronic structure and superconductivity of the FeSe/CaF2 films by PLD method with the FeSe/SrTiO3 films by molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) method and bulk FeSe. The PLD-grown multilayer FeSe/CaF2 is more hole-doped than that in MBE-grown multiple-layer FeSe films. Our results on FeSe/CaF2 films by PLD method establish a link between bulk FeSe single crystal and FeSe/SrTiO3 films by MBE method, and provide important information to understand superconductivity in FeSe-related systems.

Experimental simulation of quantum temporal steering beyond rotating-wave approximation

Characterizing the dynamics of open systems usually starts with a perturbative theory and involves various approximations, such as the Born, Markov and rotating-wave approximation (RWA). However, the approximation approaches could introduce more or less incompleteness in describing the bath behaviors. Here, we consider a quantum channel, which is modeled by a qubit (a two-level system) interacting with a bosonic bath. Unlike the traditional works, we experimentally simulate the system-bath interaction without applying the Born, Markov, and rotating-wave approximations. To our knowledge, this is the first experimental simulation of the quantum channels without any approximations mentioned above, by using linear optical devices. The results are quite useful and interesting, which not only reveal the effect of the counter-rotating terms but also present a more accurate picture of the quantum channel dynamics. Besides, we experimentally investigate the dynamics of the quantum temporal steering (TS), i.e., a temporal analogue of Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen steering. The experimental and theoretical results are in good agreement and show that the counter-rotating terms significantly influence the TS dynamics. When one monogamously associates TS with the security of the cryptographic protocols (e.g., BB84), our experimental tests reveal that the channels based on RWA will provide exaggerated security durations, while they are actually insecure in non-RWA channel cases. This implies that doing RWA may result in a risk for the security of quantum key distribution. Our findings are expected to have useful applications in secure quantum communications and future interesting TS studies.

Generating double NOON states of photons in circuit QED

To generate a NOON state with a large photon number $N$, the number of operational steps could be large and the fidelity will decrease rapidly with $N$. Here we propose a method to generate a new type of quantum entangled states, $(|NN00\rangle+|00NN\rangle)/\sqrt{2}$ called "double NOON" states, with a setup of two superconducting flux qutrits and five circuit cavities. This scheme operates essentially by employing a two-photon process, i.e., two photons are simultaneously and separately emitted into two cavities when each coupler qutrit is initially in a higher-energy excited state. As a consequence, the "double" NOON state creation needs only $N$+2 operational steps. One application of double NOON states is to get a phase error of $1/(2N)$ in phase measurement. In comparison, to achieve the same error, a normal NOON state of the form $(|2N,0\rangle+|0,2N\rangle)/\sqrt{2}$ is needed, which requires at least $2N$ operational steps to prepare by using the existing schemes. Our numerical simulation demonstrates that high-fidelity generation of the double NOON states with $N\leq 10$ even for the imperfect devices is feasible with the present circuit QED technique.

Catalyzing Cloud-Fog Interoperation in 5G Wireless Networks: An SDN Approach

The piling up storage and compute stacks in cloud data center are expected to accommodate the majority of internet traffic in the future. However, as the number of mobile devices significantly increases, getting massive data into and out of the cloud wirelessly inflicts high pressure on the bandwidth, and meanwhile induces unpredictable latency. Fog computing, which advocates extending clouds to network edge, guarantees low latency and location-aware service provisioning. In this article, we consider fog computing as an ideal complement rather than a substitute of cloud computing, and we propose a software defined networking (SDN) enabled framework for cloud-fog interoperation, aiming at improving quality of experience and optimizing network resource usage. Two case studies are provided to illuminate the feasibility and advantage of the proposed framework. At last, potential research issues are presented for further investigation.

Self-dual binary codes from small covers and simple polytopes

We explore the connection between simple polytopes and self-dual binary codes via the theory of small covers. We first show that a small cover $M^n$ over a simple $n$-polytope $P^n$ produces a self-dual code in the sense of Kreck-Puppe if and only if $P^n$ is $n$-colorable and $n$ is odd. Then we show how to describe such a self-dual binary code in terms of the combinatorial information of $P^n$. Moreover, we can define a family of binary codes $\mathfrak{B}_k(P^n)$, $0\leq k\leq n$, from an arbitrary simple $n$-polytope $P^n$. We will give some necessary and sufficient conditions for $\mathfrak{B}_k(P^n)$ to be a self-dual code. A spinoff of our study of such binary codes gives some new ways to judge whether a simple $n$-polytope $P^n$ is $n$-colorable in terms of the associated binary codes $\mathfrak{B}_k(P^n)$. In addition, we prove that the minimum distance of the self-dual binary code obtained from a $3$-colorable simple $3$-polytope is always $4$.

Entangling and assisted entangling power of bipartite unitary operations

Nonlocal unitary operations can create quantum entanglement between distributed particles, and the quantification of created entanglement is a hard problem. It corresponds to the concepts of entangling and assisted entangling power when the input states are, respectively, product and arbitrary pure states. We analytically derive them for Schmidt-rank-two bipartite unitary and some complex bipartite permutation unitaries. In particular, the entangling power of permutation unitary of Schmidt rank three can take only one of two values: $\log_2 9 - 16/9$ or $\log_2 3$ ebits. The entangling power, assisted entangling power and disentangling power of $2\times d_B$ permutation unitaries of Schmidt rank four are all $2$ ebits. These quantities are also derived for generalized Clifford operators. We further show that any bipartite permutation unitary of Schmidt rank greater than two has entangling power greater than $1.223$ ebits. We construct the generalized controlled-NOT (CNOT) gates whose assisted entangling power reaches the maximum. We quantitatively compare the entangling power and assisted entangling power for general bipartite unitaries, and study their connection to the disentangling power. We also propose a probabilistic protocol for implementing bipartite unitaries.
