Photovoltaic Self-Powered Gas Sensing: A Review

The self-powered sensing system could harness ambient energy to power the sensor without the need for external electrical energy. Recently, the concept of photovoltaic (PV) self-powered gas sensing has aroused wider attentions due to room-temperature operation, low power consumption, small size and potential applications. The PV self-powered gas sensors integrate the photovoltaic effects and the gas sensing function into a single chip, which could truly achieve the goal of zero power consumption for an independent gas sensing device. As an emerging concept, the PV self-powered gas sensing has been achieved by using different strategies, including integrated gas sensor and solar cell, integrated light filter and solar cell, gas-sensitive heterojunction photovoltaics, and gas-sensitive lateral photovoltaics, respectively. The purpose of this review is to summarize recent advances of PV self-powered gas sensing and also remark on the directions for future research in this topic.

A conjecture of thermo-gravitation based on geometry, classical physics and classical thermodynamics

One of the goals that physicists have been pursuing is to get the same explanation from different angles for the same phenomenon, so as to realize the unity of basic physical laws. Geometry, classical mechanics and classical thermodynamics are three relatively old disciplines. Their research methods and perspectives for the same phenomenon are quite different. However, there must be some undetermined connections and symmetries among them. In previous studies, there is a lack of horizontal analogical research on the basic theories of different disciplines, but revealing the deep connections between them will help to deepen the understanding of the existing system and promote the common development of multiple disciplines. Using the method of analogy analysis, five basic axioms of geometry, four laws of classical mechanics and four laws of thermodynamics are compared and analyzed. The similarity and relevance of basic laws between different disciplines is proposed. Then, by comparing the axiom of circle in geometry and Newton's law of universal gravitation, the conjecture of the law of thermo-gravitation is put forward.

Weak deflection angle by electrically and magnetically charged black holes from nonlinear electrodynamics

Nonlinear electrodynamic (NLED) theories are well-motivated for their extensions to classical electrodynamics in the strong field regime, and have been extensively investigated in seeking for regular black hole solutions. In this paper, we focus on two spherically symmetric and static black hole solutions based on two types of NLED models: the Euler-Heisenberg NLED model and the Bronnikov NLED model, and calculate the weak deflection angle of light by these two black holes with the help of the Gauss-Bonnet theorem. We investigate the effects of the one-loop corrections to quantum electrodynamics on the deflection angle and analyse the behavior of the deflection angle by a regular magnetically charged black hole. It is found that the weak deflection angle of the electrically charged Einstein-Euler-Heisenberg black hole increases with the one-loop corrections and the regular magnetically charged black hole based on the Bronnikov NLED model has a smaller deflection angle than the singular one. Besides, we also calculate the deflection angle of light by the geodesic method for verification. In addition, we discuss the effects of a cold non-magnetized plasma on the deflection angle and find that the deflection angle increases with the plasma parameter.

Transfer Learning from Speech Synthesis to Voice Conversion with Non-Parallel Training Data

This paper presents a novel framework to build a voice conversion (VC) system by learning from a text-to-speech (TTS) synthesis system, that is called TTS-VC transfer learning. We first develop a multi-speaker speech synthesis system with sequence-to-sequence encoder-decoder architecture, where the encoder extracts robust linguistic representations of text, and the decoder, conditioned on target speaker embedding, takes the context vectors and the attention recurrent network cell output to generate target acoustic features. We take advantage of the fact that TTS system maps input text to speaker independent context vectors, and reuse such a mapping to supervise the training of latent representations of an encoder-decoder voice conversion system. In the voice conversion system, the encoder takes speech instead of text as input, while the decoder is functionally similar to TTS decoder. As we condition the decoder on speaker embedding, the system can be trained on non-parallel data for any-to-any voice conversion. During voice conversion training, we present both text and speech to speech synthesis and voice conversion networks respectively. At run-time, the voice conversion network uses its own encoder-decoder architecture. Experiments show that the proposed approach outperforms two competitive voice conversion baselines consistently, namely phonetic posteriorgram and variational autoencoder methods, in terms of speech quality, naturalness, and speaker similarity.

Internal Calibration of the PandaX-II Detector with Radon Gaseous Sources

We have developed a low-energy electron recoil (ER) calibration method with $^{220}$Rn for the PandaX-II detector. $^{220}$Rn, emanated from natural thorium compounds, was fed into the detector through the xenon purification system. From 2017 to 2019, we performed three dedicated calibration campaigns with different radon sources. We studied the detector response to $α$, $β$, and $γ$ particles with focus on low energy ER events. During the runs in 2017 and 2018, the amount of radioactivity of $^{222}$Rn were on the order of 1\% of that of $^{220}$Rn and thorium particulate contamination was negligible, especially in 2018. We also measured the background contribution from $^{214}$Pb for the first time in PandaX-II with the help from a $^{222}$Rn injection. Calibration strategy with $^{220}$Rn and $^{222}$Rn will be implemented in the upcoming PandaX-4T experiment and can be useful for other xenon-based detectors as well.

Results of Dark Matter Search using the Full PandaX-II Exposure

We report the dark matter search results obtained using the full 132 ton$\cdot$day exposure of the PandaX-II experiment, including all data from March 2016 to August 2018. No significant excess of events is identified above the expected background. Upper limits are set on the spin-independent dark matter-nucleon interactions. The lowest 90% confidence level exclusion on the spin-independent cross section is $2.2\times 10^{-46}$ cm$^2$ at a WIMP mass of 30 GeV/$c^2$.

Tensor Perturbations and Thick Branes in Higher-dimensional $f(R)$ Gravity

We study brane worlds in an anisotropic higher-dimensional spacetime within the context of $f(R)$ gravity. Firstly, we demonstrate that this spacetime with a concrete metric ansatz is stable against linear tensor perturbations under certain conditions. Moreover, the Kaluza-Klein modes of the graviton are analyzed. Secondly, we investigate thick brane solutions in six dimensions and their properties. We further exhibit two sets of solutions for thick branes. At last, the effective potential of the Kaluza-Klein modes of the graviton is discussed for the two solved $f(R)$ models in higher dimensions.

The Cryogenics and Xenon handling system for the PandaX-4T Experiment

PandaX-4T, the new generation of the PandaX detector, is a xenon dual-phase detector with about six tons of liquid xenon as target for dark matter search. A cryogenics and xenon handling system is designed to liquify and purify this large detector. In this paper, the results on the commission of the cryogenics and gas handling system are reported. The maximum cooling power of ~ 580 W at 178 K with three cooperating coldheads has been achieved. The filling rate with an assisted liquid nitrogen cooling can reach ~ 700 kg/day. The average rate of recuperation by liquid nitrogen is around 440 kg/day. The maximum total purification speed of two circulation loops is up to ~ 155 slpm. Each loop is using a large heat exchanger with a measured heat exchange efficiency of ~ 97.5+-0.5%.

Flat and bent branes with inner structure in two-field mimetic gravity

Inspired by the work [Eur. Phys. J. C 78 (2018) 45], we study the linear tensor perturbation of both the flat and bent thick branes with inner structure in two-field mimetic gravity. The master equations for the linear tensor perturbations are derived by taking the transverse and traceless gauge. For the Minsowskii and Anti-de-Sitter brane, the brane systems are stable against the tensor perturbation. The effective potentials of the tensor perturbations of both the flat and bent thick branes are volcano-like, and this structure may potentially lead to the zero-mode and the resonant modes of the tensor perturbation. We further illustrate the results of massive resonant modes.

A Multi-stream Convolutional Neural Network for Micro-expression Recognition Using Optical Flow and EVM

Micro-expression (ME) recognition plays a crucial role in a wide range of applications, particularly in public security and psychotherapy. Recently, traditional methods rely excessively on machine learning design and the recognition rate is not high enough for its practical application because of its short duration and low intensity. On the other hand, some methods based on deep learning also cannot get high accuracy due to problems such as the imbalance of databases. To address these problems, we design a multi-stream convolutional neural network (MSCNN) for ME recognition in this paper. Specifically, we employ EVM and optical flow to magnify and visualize subtle movement changes in MEs and extract the masks from the optical flow images. And then, we add the masks, optical flow images, and grayscale images into the MSCNN. After that, in order to overcome the imbalance of databases, we added a random over-sampler after the Dense Layer of the neural network. Finally, extensive experiments are conducted on two public ME databases: CASME II and SAMM. Compared with many recent state-of-the-art approaches, our method achieves more promising recognition results.

Excited states of holographic superconductors from massive gravity

In this paper, we generalize the study of the model of holographic superconductor in the excited states to the framework of massive gravity. By taking into account the effect of massive graviton, we numerically present a family of solutions of the holographic superconductor in excited states, and find that the critical temperatures can be higher due to the effect of massive graviton comparing with the superconductor in Einstein gravity. We also investigate the condensates and conductivities in the ground state and the excited states with studying various parameters that determine the framework of gravity background.

Kaluza-Klein modes of $U(1)$ gauge vector field on brane with codimension-$d$

From the paper [JHEP 01 (2019) 021], it is known that the effective action of a massless $U(1)$ gauge vector field on a codimension-2 brane is gauge invariant due to the coupling between the vector Kaluza-Klein (KK) modes with two types of scalar KK modes. It is interesting to generalize this result to a brane world model with an arbitrary number of extra dimensions. In this work, we first investigate the case with three extra dimensions. After KK decomposition, there are three types of scalar KK modes. In addition to the mutual coupling between these scalar modes, there are also coupling between the scalar and the vector KK modes. The coupling constants are not all independent. The relationships between the coupling constants enable us to obtain a gauge invariant effective action, from which we can see that the masses of the vector KK modes depend on all the three extra dimensions. The masses of the scalar modes, however, depend only on two of the three extra dimensions. Then we generalize the results into branes with codimension $d$ ($d=1, 2...$), and find that $d$ will directly affect the masses of the KK modes. But there is always a gauge invariant effective action for the massive vector KK modes.

Matter flow method for alleviating checkerboard oscillations in triangular mesh SGH Lagrangian simulation

When the SGH Lagrangian based on triangle mesh is used to simulate compressible hydrodynamics, because of the stiffness of triangular mesh, the problem of physical quantity cell-to-cell spatial oscillation (also called "checkerboard oscillation") is easy to occur. A matter flow method is proposed to alleviate the oscillation of physical quantities caused by triangular stiffness. The basic idea of this method is to attribute the stiffness of triangle to the fact that the edges of triangle mesh can not do bending motion, and to compensate the effect of triangle edge bending motion by means of matter flow. Three effects are considered in our matter flow method: (1) transport of the mass, momentum and energy carried by the moving matter; (2) the work done on the element, since the flow of matter changes the specific volume of the grid element; (3) the effect of matter flow on the strain rate in the element. Numerical experiments show that the proposed matter flow method can effectively alleviate the spatial oscillation of physical quantities.

Spherical Accretion Flow onto General Parameterized Spherically Symmetric Black Hole Spacetimes

The transonic phenomenon of black hole accretion and the existence of the photon sphere are the characteristics of strong gravitational fields near a black hole horizon. In this work, we study spherical accretion flow onto a general parametrized spherically symmetric black hole spacetimes. For this purpose, we analyze the accretion process of various perfect fluids, such as the isothermal fluid of ultra-stiff, ultra-relativistic, and sub-relativistic types and polytropic fluid, respectively. The influences of extra parameters beyond the Schwarzschild black hole in the general parameterized spherically symmetric black hole on the flow behaviors of the above-mentioned test fluids are studied in detail. In addition, by studying the accretion of ideal photon gas, we further discuss the correspondence between the sonic radius of accreting photon gas and the photon sphere for the general parameterized spherically symmetric black hole. Some possible future extensions of our analysis are also discussed.

Fully Parameterized Quantile Function for Distributional Reinforcement Learning

Distributional Reinforcement Learning (RL) differs from traditional RL in that, rather than the expectation of total returns, it estimates distributions and has achieved state-of-the-art performance on Atari Games. The key challenge in practical distributional RL algorithms lies in how to parameterize estimated distributions so as to better approximate the true continuous distribution. Existing distributional RL algorithms parameterize either the probability side or the return value side of the distribution function, leaving the other side uniformly fixed as in C51, QR-DQN or randomly sampled as in IQN. In this paper, we propose fully parameterized quantile function that parameterizes both the quantile fraction axis (i.e., the x-axis) and the value axis (i.e., y-axis) for distributional RL. Our algorithm contains a fraction proposal network that generates a discrete set of quantile fractions and a quantile value network that gives corresponding quantile values. The two networks are jointly trained to find the best approximation of the true distribution. Experiments on 55 Atari Games show that our algorithm significantly outperforms existing distributional RL algorithms and creates a new record for the Atari Learning Environment for non-distributed agents.

Multi-Site Infant Brain Segmentation Algorithms: The iSeg-2019 Challenge

To better understand early brain growth patterns in health and disorder, it is critical to accurately segment infant brain magnetic resonance (MR) images into white matter (WM), gray matter (GM), and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). Deep learning-based methods have achieved state-of-the-art performance; however, one of major limitations is that the learning-based methods may suffer from the multi-site issue, that is, the models trained on a dataset from one site may not be applicable to the datasets acquired from other sites with different imaging protocols/scanners. To promote methodological development in the community, iSeg-2019 challenge (http://iseg2019.web.unc.edu) provides a set of 6-month infant subjects from multiple sites with different protocols/scanners for the participating methods. Training/validation subjects are from UNC (MAP) and testing subjects are from UNC/UMN (BCP), Stanford University, and Emory University. By the time of writing, there are 30 automatic segmentation methods participating in iSeg-2019. We review the 8 top-ranked teams by detailing their pipelines/implementations, presenting experimental results and evaluating performance in terms of the whole brain, regions of interest, and gyral landmark curves. We also discuss their limitations and possible future directions for the multi-site issue. We hope that the multi-site dataset in iSeg-2019 and this review article will attract more researchers on the multi-site issue.

Excited states of holographic superconductors

In this paper we re-investigate the model of the anti-de Sitter gravity coupled to Maxwell and charged scalar fields, which has been studied as the gravitational dual to a superconductor for a long time since the famous work [Phys.\ Rev.\ Lett.\ {\bf 101}, 031601 (2008)]. By numerical method, we present a novel family of solutions of holographical superconductor with excited states, and find there exists a lower critical temperature in the corresponding excited state. Moreover, we study the condensate and conductivity in the excited states. It is very interesting that the conductivity $σ$ of each excited state has an additional pole in $\text{Im}[σ]$ and a delta function in $\text{Re}[σ]$ arising at the low temperature inside the gap, which is just the evidence of the existence of excited states.
