Quantile Treatment Effects in High Dimensional Panel Data

We introduce novel estimators for quantile causal effects with high dimensional panel data (large $N$ and $T$), where only one or a few units are affected by the intervention or policy. Our method extends the generalized synthetic control method \citep{xu_2017} from average treatment effects on the treated to quantile treatment effects on the treated, allowing the underlying factor structure to change across the quantile of the interested outcome distribution. Our method involves estimating the quantile-dependent factors using the control group, followed by a quantile regression to estimate the quantile treatment effect using the treated units. We establish the asymptotic properties of our estimators and propose a bootstrap procedure for statistical inference, supported by simulation studies. An empirical application of the 2008 China Stimulus Program is provided.

Enhancing Hyperbole and Metaphor Detection with Their Bidirectional Dynamic Interaction and Emotion Knowledge

Text-based hyperbole and metaphor detection are of great significance for natural language processing (NLP) tasks. However, due to their semantic obscurity and expressive diversity, it is rather challenging to identify them. Existing methods mostly focus on superficial text features, ignoring the associations of hyperbole and metaphor as well as the effect of implicit emotion on perceiving these rhetorical devices. To implement these hypotheses, we propose an emotion-guided hyperbole and metaphor detection framework based on bidirectional dynamic interaction (EmoBi). Firstly, the emotion analysis module deeply mines the emotion connotations behind hyperbole and metaphor. Next, the emotion-based domain mapping module identifies the target and source domains to gain a deeper understanding of the implicit meanings of hyperbole and metaphor. Finally, the bidirectional dynamic interaction module enables the mutual promotion between hyperbole and metaphor. Meanwhile, a verification mechanism is designed to ensure detection accuracy and reliability. Experiments show that EmoBi outperforms all baseline methods on four datasets. Specifically, compared to the current SoTA, the F1 score increased by 28.1% for hyperbole detection on the TroFi dataset and 23.1% for metaphor detection on the HYPO-L dataset. These results, underpinned by in-depth analyses, underscore the effectiveness and potential of our approach for advancing hyperbole and metaphor detection.

VIS-Shepherd: Constructing Critic for LLM-based Data Visualization Generation

Data visualization generation using Large Language Models (LLMs) has shown promising results but often produces suboptimal visualizations that require human intervention for improvement. In this work, we introduce VIS-Shepherd, a specialized Multimodal Large Language Model (MLLM)-based critic to evaluate and provide feedback for LLM-generated data visualizations. At the core of our approach is a framework to construct a high-quality visualization critique dataset, where we collect human-created visualization instances, synthesize corresponding LLM-generated instances, and construct high-quality critiques. We conduct both model-based automatic evaluation and human preference studies to evaluate the effectiveness of our approach. Our experiments show that even small (7B parameters) open-source MLLM models achieve substantial performance gains by leveraging our high-quality visualization critique dataset, reaching levels comparable to much larger open-source or even proprietary models. Our work demonstrates significant potential for MLLM-based automated visualization critique and indicates promising directions for enhancing LLM-based data visualization generation. Confidence-Guided Human-AI Collaboration: Reinforcement Learning with Distributional Proxy Value Propagation for Autonomous Driving

Autonomous driving promises significant advancements in mobility, road safety and traffic efficiency, yet reinforcement learning and imitation learning face safe-exploration and distribution-shift challenges. Although human-AI collaboration alleviates these issues, it often relies heavily on extensive human intervention, which increases costs and reduces efficiency. This paper develops a confidence-guided human-AI collaboration (C-HAC) strategy to overcome these limitations. First, C-HAC employs a distributional proxy value propagation method within the distributional soft actor-critic (DSAC) framework. By leveraging return distributions to represent human intentions C-HAC achieves rapid and stable learning of human-guided policies with minimal human interaction. Subsequently, a shared control mechanism is activated to integrate the learned human-guided policy with a self-learning policy that maximizes cumulative rewards. This enables the agent to explore independently and continuously enhance its performance beyond human guidance. Finally, a policy confidence evaluation algorithm capitalizes on DSAC's return distribution networks to facilitate dynamic switching between human-guided and self-learning policies via a confidence-based intervention function. This ensures the agent can pursue optimal policies while maintaining safety and performance guarantees. Extensive experiments across diverse driving scenarios reveal that C-HAC significantly outperforms conventional methods in terms of safety, efficiency, and overall performance, achieving state-of-the-art results. The effectiveness of the proposed method is further validated through real-world road tests in complex traffic conditions. The videos and code are available at: https://github.com/lzqw/C-HAC.

Multi-Granular Multimodal Clue Fusion for Meme Understanding

With the continuous emergence of various social media platforms frequently used in daily life, the multimodal meme understanding (MMU) task has been garnering increasing attention. MMU aims to explore and comprehend the meanings of memes from various perspectives by performing tasks such as metaphor recognition, sentiment analysis, intention detection, and offensiveness detection. Despite making progress, limitations persist due to the loss of fine-grained metaphorical visual clue and the neglect of multimodal text-image weak correlation. To overcome these limitations, we propose a multi-granular multimodal clue fusion model (MGMCF) to advance MMU. Firstly, we design an object-level semantic mining module to extract object-level image feature clues, achieving fine-grained feature clue extraction and enhancing the model's ability to capture metaphorical details and semantics. Secondly, we propose a brand-new global-local cross-modal interaction model to address the weak correlation between text and images. This model facilitates effective interaction between global multimodal contextual clues and local unimodal feature clues, strengthening their representations through a bidirectional cross-modal attention mechanism. Finally, we devise a dual-semantic guided training strategy to enhance the model's understanding and alignment of multimodal representations in the semantic space. Experiments conducted on the widely-used MET-MEME bilingual dataset demonstrate significant improvements over state-of-the-art baselines. Specifically, there is an 8.14% increase in precision for offensiveness detection task, and respective accuracy enhancements of 3.53%, 3.89%, and 3.52% for metaphor recognition, sentiment analysis, and intention detection tasks. These results, underpinned by in-depth analyses, underscore the effectiveness and potential of our approach for advancing MMU.

HyperCAN: Hypernetwork-Driven Deep Parameterized Constitutive Models for Metamaterials

We introduce HyperCAN, a machine learning framework that utilizes hypernetworks to construct adaptable constitutive artificial neural networks for a wide range of beam-based metamaterials exhibiting diverse mechanical behavior under finite deformations. HyperCAN integrates an input convex network that models the nonlinear stress-strain map of a truss lattice, while ensuring adherence to fundamental mechanics principles, along with a hypernetwork that dynamically adjusts the parameters of the convex network as a function of the lattice topology and geometry. This unified framework demonstrates robust generalization in predicting the mechanical behavior of previously unseen metamaterial designs and loading scenarios well beyond the training domain. We show how HyperCAN can be integrated into multiscale simulations to accurately capture the highly nonlinear responses of large-scale truss metamaterials, closely matching fully resolved simulations while significantly reducing computational costs. This offers new efficient opportunities for the multiscale design and optimization of truss metamaterials.

A Flat Plasmonic Biosensing Interface on Optical Fiber End-Facet via SPP-MIM Hybridization

We found that the specific dispersion of metal-insulator-metal (MIM) waveguide allows the hybridization of surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) and the waveguide, which is not possible with dielectric waveguides. The SPP-MIM hybridization structure forms such a meta-film that integrates the previously incompatible respective merits of SPR and LSPR, including flat interfaces, high sensitivities, short evanescent fields and easy coupling with confined light. On the other hand, to achieve stable and reproducible performance is one of the greatest unresolved challenges for the development of nanophotonic biosensors. We point out that the key is to obtain well-controlled biomolecular behaviors using simple physical interfaces, for which the SPP-MIM meta-film provides a capable solution. We embed the SPP-MIM meta-film with a plasmonic crystal cavity and integrate it on a single-mode fiber's end-facet to detect biomolecular interactions. This device demonstrates highly reproducible sensorgrams and convincing detection of biotinylated proteins at down to 30 fM, with the sensorgrams following the Langmuir model. By unprecedentedly having both high sensitivity and high reproducibility, our device proposal provides a comprehensive solution for optical fiber-tip plasmonic devices to turn into a useful industrial biosensing technology.

Study Objectives: To evaluate the agreement between the millimeter-wave radar-based device and polysomnography (PSG) in diagnosis of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and classification of sleep stage in children. Methods: 281 children, aged 1 to 18 years, who underwent sleep monitoring between September and November 2023 at the Sleep Center of Beijing Children's Hospital, Capital Medical University, were recruited in the study. All enrolled children underwent sleep monitoring by PSG and the millimeter-wave radar-based device, QSA600, simultaneously. QSA600 recordings were automatically analyzed using a deep learning model meanwhile the PSG data was manually scored. Results: The Obstructive Apnea-Hypopnea Index (OAHI) obtained from QSA600 and PSG demonstrates a high level of agreement with an intraclass correlation coefficient of 0.945 (95% CI: 0.93 to 0.96). Bland-Altman analysis indicates that the mean difference of OAHI between QSA600 and PSG is -0.10 events/h (95% CI: -11.15 to 10.96). The deep learning model evaluated through cross-validation showed good sensitivity (81.8%, 84.3% and 89.7%) and specificity (90.5%, 95.3% and 97.1%) values for diagnosing children with OAHI>1, OAHI>5 and OAHI>10. The area under the receiver operating characteristic curve is 0.923, 0.955 and 0.988, respectively. For sleep stage classification, the model achieved Kappa coefficients of 0.854, 0.781, and 0.734, with corresponding overall accuracies of 95.0%, 84.8%, and 79.7% for Wake-sleep classification, Wake-REM-Light-Deep classification, and Wake-REM-N1-N2 N3 classification, respectively. Conclusions: QSA600 has demonstrated high agreement with PSG in diagnosing OSA and performing sleep staging in children. The device is portable, low-load and suitable for follow up and long-term pediatric sleep assessment.

AgentCoord: Visually Exploring Coordination Strategy for LLM-based Multi-Agent Collaboration

The potential of automatic task-solving through Large Language Model (LLM)-based multi-agent collaboration has recently garnered widespread attention from both the research community and industry. While utilizing natural language to coordinate multiple agents presents a promising avenue for democratizing agent technology for general users, designing coordination strategies remains challenging with existing coordination frameworks. This difficulty stems from the inherent ambiguity of natural language for specifying the collaboration process and the significant cognitive effort required to extract crucial information (e.g. agent relationship, task dependency, result correspondence) from a vast amount of text-form content during exploration. In this work, we present a visual exploration framework to facilitate the design of coordination strategies in multi-agent collaboration. We first establish a structured representation for LLM-based multi-agent coordination strategy to regularize the ambiguity of natural language. Based on this structure, we devise a three-stage generation method that leverages LLMs to convert a user's general goal into an executable initial coordination strategy. Users can further intervene at any stage of the generation process, utilizing LLMs and a set of interactions to explore alternative strategies. Whenever a satisfactory strategy is identified, users can commence the collaboration and examine the visually enhanced execution result. We develop AgentCoord, a prototype interactive system, and conduct a formal user study to demonstrate the feasibility and effectiveness of our approach.

Unifying the design space and optimizing linear and nonlinear truss metamaterials by generative modeling

The rise of machine learning has fueled the discovery of new materials and, especially, metamaterials--truss lattices being their most prominent class. While their tailorable properties have been explored extensively, the design of truss-based metamaterials has remained highly limited and often heuristic, due to the vast, discrete design space and the lack of a comprehensive parameterization. We here present a graph-based deep learning generative framework, which combines a variational autoencoder and a property predictor, to construct a reduced, continuous latent representation covering an enormous range of trusses. This unified latent space allows for the fast generation of new designs through simple operations (e.g., traversing the latent space or interpolating between structures). We further demonstrate an optimization framework for the inverse design of trusses with customized mechanical properties in both the linear and nonlinear regimes, including designs exhibiting exceptionally stiff, auxetic, pentamode-like, and tailored nonlinear behaviors. This generative model can predict manufacturable (and counter-intuitive) designs with extreme target properties beyond the training domain.

Reverse Multi-Choice Dialogue Commonsense Inference with Graph-of-Thought

With the proliferation of dialogic data across the Internet, the Dialogue Commonsense Multi-choice Question Answering (DC-MCQ) task has emerged as a response to the challenge of comprehending user queries and intentions. Although prevailing methodologies exhibit effectiveness in addressing single-choice questions, they encounter difficulties in handling multi-choice queries due to the heightened intricacy and informational density. In this paper, inspired by the human cognitive process of progressively excluding options, we propose a three-step Reverse Exclusion Graph-of-Thought (ReX-GoT) framework, including Option Exclusion, Error Analysis, and Combine Information. Specifically, our ReX-GoT mimics human reasoning by gradually excluding irrelevant options and learning the reasons for option errors to choose the optimal path of the GoT and ultimately infer the correct answer. By progressively integrating intricate clues, our method effectively reduces the difficulty of multi-choice reasoning and provides a novel solution for DC-MCQ. Extensive experiments on the CICERO and CICERO$_{v2}$ datasets validate the significant improvement of our approach on DC-MCQ task. On zero-shot setting, our model outperform the best baseline by 17.67% in terms of F1 score for the multi-choice task. Most strikingly, our GPT3.5-based ReX-GoT framework achieves a remarkable 39.44% increase in F1 score.

A Bi-directional Multi-hop Inference Model for Joint Dialog Sentiment Classification and Act Recognition

The joint task of Dialog Sentiment Classification (DSC) and Act Recognition (DAR) aims to predict the sentiment label and act label for each utterance in a dialog simultaneously. However, current methods encode the dialog context in only one direction, which limits their ability to thoroughly comprehend the context. Moreover, these methods overlook the explicit correlations between sentiment and act labels, which leads to an insufficient ability to capture rich sentiment and act clues and hinders effective and accurate reasoning. To address these issues, we propose a Bi-directional Multi-hop Inference Model (BMIM) that leverages a feature selection network and a bi-directional multi-hop inference network to iteratively extract and integrate rich sentiment and act clues in a bi-directional manner. We also employ contrastive learning and dual learning to explicitly model the correlations of sentiment and act labels. Our experiments on two widely-used datasets show that BMIM outperforms state-of-the-art baselines by at least 2.6% on F1 score in DAR and 1.4% on F1 score in DSC. Additionally, Our proposed model not only improves the performance but also enhances the interpretability of the joint sentiment and act prediction task.

ECQED: Emotion-Cause Quadruple Extraction in Dialogs

The existing emotion-cause pair extraction (ECPE) task, unfortunately, ignores extracting the emotion type and cause type, while these fine-grained meta-information can be practically useful in real-world applications, i.e., chat robots and empathic dialog generation. Also the current ECPE is limited to the scenario of single text piece, while neglecting the studies at dialog level that should have more realistic values. In this paper, we extend the ECPE task with a broader definition and scenario, presenting a new task, Emotion-Cause Quadruple Extraction in Dialogs (ECQED), which requires detecting emotion-cause utterance pairs and emotion and cause types. We present an ECQED model based on a structural and semantic heterogeneous graph as well as a parallel grid tagging scheme, which advances in effectively incorporating the dialog context structure, meanwhile solving the challenging overlapped quadruple issue. Via experiments we show that introducing the fine-grained emotion and cause features evidently helps better dialog generation. Also our proposed ECQED system shows exceptional superiority over baselines on both the emotion-cause quadruple or pair extraction tasks, meanwhile being highly efficient.

Magnon squeezing enhanced entanglement in a cavity magnomechanical system

We investigate the generation of the entanglement in a cavity magnomechanical system, which consists of three modes: a magnon mode, a microwave cavity mode and a mechanical vibration mode, the couplings of the magnon-photon and the magnon-phonon are achieved by the magnetic dipole interaction and the magnetostrictive interaction, respectively. By introducing a squeezing of the magnon mode, the magnon-photon and the magnon-phonon entanglements are significantly enhanced compared with the case without inserting the magnon squeezing. We find that an optimal parameter of the squeezing exists, which yields the maximum entanglement. This study provides a new idea for exploring the properties of quantum entanglement in the the cavity magnomechanical systems, and may have some potential applications in the quantum state engineering.

Design of a Flying Humanoid Robot Based on Thrust Vector Control

Achieving short-distance flight helps improve the efficiency of humanoid robots moving in complex environments (e.g., crossing large obstacles or reaching high places) for rapid emergency missions. This study proposes a design of a flying humanoid robot named Jet-HR2. The robot has 10 joints driven by brushless motors and harmonic drives for locomotion. To overcome the challenge of the stable-attitude takeoff in small thrust-to-weight conditions, the robot was designed based on the concept of thrust vectoring. The propulsion system consists of four ducted fans, that is, two fixed on the waist of the robot and the other two mounted on the feet, for thrust vector control. The thrust vector is controlled by adjusting the attitude of the foot during the flight. A simplified model and control strategies are proposed to solve the problem of attitude instability caused by mass errors and joint position errors during takeoff. The experimental results show that the robot's spin and dive behaviors during takeoff were effectively suppressed by controlling the thrust vector of the ducted fan on the foot. The robot successfully achieved takeoff at a thrust-to-weight ratio of 1.17 (17 kg / 20 kg) and maintained a stable attitude, reaching a takeoff height of over 1000 mm.

Data-driven topology optimization of spinodoid metamaterials with seamlessly tunable anisotropy

We present a two-scale topology optimization framework for the design of macroscopic bodies with an optimized elastic response, which is achieved by means of a spatially-variant cellular architecture on the microscale. The chosen spinodoid topology for the cellular network on the microscale (which is inspired by natural microstructures forming during spinodal decomposition) admits a seamless spatial grading as well as tunable elastic anisotropy, and it is parametrized by a small set of design parameters associated with the underlying Gaussian random field. The macroscale boundary value problem is discretized by finite elements, which in addition to the displacement field continuously interpolate the microscale design parameters. By assuming a separation of scales, the local constitutive behavior on the macroscale is identified as the homogenized elastic response of the microstructure based on the local design parameters. As a departure from classical FE$^2$-type approaches, we replace the costly microscale homogenization by a data-driven surrogate model, using deep neural networks, which accurately and efficiently maps design parameters onto the effective elasticity tensor. The model is trained on homogenized stiffness data obtained from numerical homogenization by finite elements. As an added benefit, the machine learning setup admits automatic differentiation, so that sensitivities (required for the optimization problem) can be computed exactly and without the need for numerical derivatives - a strategy that holds promise far beyond the elastic stiffness. Therefore, this framework presents a new opportunity for multiscale topology optimization based on data-driven surrogate models.

Phonon laser in a cavity magnomechanical system

The phonon analog of an optical laser has become the focus of research. We theoretically study phonon laser in a cavity magnomechanical system, which consist of a microwave cavity, a small ferromagnetic sphere and an uniform external bias magnetic field. This system can realize the phonon-magnon coupling and the cavity photon-magnon coupling via magnetostrictive interaction and magnetic dipole interaction respectively, the magnons are driven directly by a strong microwave field simultaneously. Frist, the intensity of driving magnetic field which can reach the threshold condition of phonon laser is given. Then, we demonstrate that the phonon laser can be well controlled by an adjustable external magnetic field without changing other parameters, which provides an additional degree of freedom compared to the phonon laser in optomechanical systems. Finally, with the experimentally feasible parameters, threshold power in our scheme is close to the case of optomechanical systems. Our results provide a theoretical basis for the realization of phonon lasers in magnomechanical systems.

Ground-state cooling of an magnomechanical resonator induced by magnetic damping

Quantum manipulation of mechanical resonators has been widely applied in fundamental physics and quantum information processing. Among them, cooling the mechanical system to its quantum ground state is regarded as a key step. In this work, we propose a scheme which one can realize ground-state cooling of resonator in a cavity magnomechanical system. The system consists of a microwave cavity and a small ferromagnetic sphere, in which phonon-magnon coupling and cavity photon-magnon coupling can be achieved via magnetostrictive interaction and magnetic dipole interaction, respectively. After adiabatically eliminating the cavity mode, an effective Hamiltonian which consists of magnon and mechanical modes is obtained. Within experimentally feasible parameters, we demonstrate that the ground-state cooling of the magnomechanical resonator can be achieved by extra magnetic damping. Unlike optomechanical cooling, magnomechanical interaction is utilized to realize the cooling of resonators. We further illustrate the ground-state cooling can be effectively controlled by the external magnetic field.
