A Freeform Dielectric Metasurface Modeling Approach Based on Deep Neural Networks

Metasurfaces have shown promising potentials in shaping optical wavefronts while remaining compact compared to bulky geometric optics devices. Design of meta-atoms, the fundamental building blocks of metasurfaces, relies on trial-and-error method to achieve target electromagnetic responses. This process includes the characterization of an enormous amount of different meta-atom designs with different physical and geometric parameters, which normally demands huge computational resources. In this paper, a deep learning-based metasurface/meta-atom modeling approach is introduced to significantly reduce the characterization time while maintaining accuracy. Based on a convolutional neural network (CNN) structure, the proposed deep learning network is able to model meta-atoms with free-form 2D patterns and different lattice sizes, material refractive indexes and thicknesses. Moreover, the presented approach features the capability to predict meta-atoms' wide spectrum responses in the timescale of milliseconds, which makes it attractive for applications such as fast meta-atom/metasurface on-demand designs and optimizations.

Relational Proofs for Quantum Programs

Relational verification of quantum programs has many potential applications in quantum and post-quantum security and other domains. We propose a relational program logic for quantum programs. The interpretation of our logic is based on a quantum analogue of probabilistic couplings. We use our logic to verify non-trivial relational properties of quantum programs, including uniformity for samples generated by the quantum Bernoulli factory, reliability of quantum teleportation against noise (bit and phase flip), security of quantum one-time pad and equivalence of quantum walks.

The local properties of supernova explosions and their host galaxies

We aim to understand the properties at the locations of supernova (SN) explosion in their host galaxies and compare with the global properties of the host galaxies. We use the integral field spectrograph (IFS) of Mapping Nearby Galaxies (MaNGA) at Apache Point Observatory (APO) to get the 2D maps of the parameter properties for eleven SN host galaxies. The sample galaxies are analyzed one by one in details on their properties of velocity field, star formation rate, oxygen abundance and stellar mass etc. This sample of SN host galaxies have redshifts around $z$ $\sim$ 0.03, which is higher than those of the previous related works. The higher redshift distribution allows us to obtain the properties of more distant SN host galaxies. Metallicity (gas-phase oxygen abundance) estimated from integrated spectra could represent the local metallicity at SN explosion sites with small bias. All the host galaxies in our sample are metal-rich galaxies (12+log(O/H) $>$ 8.5) except for NGC 6387, which means supernovae (SNe) may be more inclined to explode in rich-metallicity galaxies. There is a positive relation between global gas-phase oxygen abundance and the stellar mass of host galaxies. We also try to compare the differences of the host galaxies between SN Ia and SN II. In our sample, both SNe Ia and SNe II could explode in normal galaxies, while SNe II also could explode in an interactive or merger system, which has star formation in the galaxy.

Peak-to-Average Power Ratio Analysis for OFDM-Based Mixed-Numerology Transmissions

In this paper, the probability distribution of the peak to average power ratio (PAPR) is analyzed for the mixed numerologies transmission based on orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM). State of the art theoretical analysis implicitly assumes continuous and symmetric frequency spectrum of OFDM signals. Thus, it is difficult to be applied to the mixed-numerology system due to its complication. By comprehensively considering system parameters, including numerology, bandwidth and power level of each subband, we propose a generic analytical distribution function of PAPR for continuous-time signals based on level-crossing theory. The proposed approach can be applied to both conventional single numerology and mixed-numerology systems. In addition, it also ensures the validity for the noncontinuous-OFDM (NC-OFDM). Given the derived distribution expression, we further investigate the effect of power allocation between different numerologies on PAPR. Simulations are presented and show the good match of the proposed theoretical results.

Reasoning about Parallel Quantum Programs

We initiate the study of parallel quantum programming by defining the operational and denotational semantics of parallel quantum programs. The technical contributions of this paper include: (1) find a series of useful proof rules for reasoning about correctness of parallel quantum programs; (2) prove a (relative) completeness of our proof rules for partial correctness of disjoint parallel quantum programs; and (3) prove a strong soundness theorem of the proof rules showing that partial correctness is well maintained at each step of transitions in the operational semantics of a general parallel quantum program (with shared variables). This is achieved by partially overcoming the following conceptual challenges that are never present in classical parallel programming: (i) the intertwining of nondeterminism caused by quantum measurements and introduced by parallelism; (ii) entanglement between component quantum programs; and (iii) combining quantum predicates in the overlap of state Hilbert spaces of component quantum programs with shared variables. Applications of the techniques developed in this paper are illustrated by a formal verification of Bravyi-Gosset-König's parallel quantum algorithm solving a linear algebra problem, which gives for the first time an unconditional proof of a computational quantum advantage.

Entirety of Quantum Uncertainty and Its Experimental Verification

As a foundation of modern physics, uncertainty relations describe an ultimate limit for the measurement uncertainty of incompatible observables. Traditionally, uncertain relations are formulated by mathematical bounds for a specific state. Here we present a method for geometrically characterizing uncertainty relations as an entire area of variances of the observables, ranging over all possible input states. We find that for the pair of position $x$ and momentum $p$ operators, Heisenberg's uncertainty principle points exactly to the area of the variances of $x$ and $p$. Moreover, for finite-dimensional systems, we prove that the corresponding area is necessarily semialgebraic; in other words, this set can be represented via finite polynomial equations and inequalities, or any finite union of such sets. In particular, we give the analytical characterization of the areas of variances of (a) a pair of one-qubit observables, (b) a pair of projective observables for arbitrary dimension, and give the first experimental observation of such areas in a photonic system.

The Design and Implementation of XiaoIce, an Empathetic Social Chatbot

This paper describes the development of Microsoft XiaoIce, the most popular social chatbot in the world. XiaoIce is uniquely designed as an AI companion with an emotional connection to satisfy the human need for communication, affection, and social belonging. We take into account both intelligent quotient (IQ) and emotional quotient (EQ) in system design, cast human-machine social chat as decision-making over Markov Decision Processes (MDPs), and optimize XiaoIce for long-term user engagement, measured in expected Conversation-turns Per Session (CPS). We detail the system architecture and key components including dialogue manager, core chat, skills, and an empathetic computing module. We show how XiaoIce dynamically recognizes human feelings and states, understands user intent, and responds to user needs throughout long conversations. Since her launch in 2014, XiaoIce has communicated with over 660 million active users and succeeded in establishing long-term relationships with many of them. Analysis of large scale online logs shows that XiaoIce has achieved an average CPS of 23, which is significantly higher than that of other chatbots and even human conversations.

A Novel Modeling Approach for All-Dielectric Metasurfaces Using Deep Neural Networks

Metasurfaces have become a promising means for manipulating optical wavefronts in flat and high-performance optical devices. Conventional metasurface device design relies on trial-and-error methods to obtain target electromagnetic (EM) response, an approach that demands significant efforts to investigate the enormous number of possible meta-atom structures. In this paper, a deep neural network approach is introduced that significantly improves on both speed and accuracy compared to techniques currently used to assemble metasurface-based devices. Our neural network approach overcomes three key challenges that have limited previous neural-network-based design schemes: input/output vector dimensional mismatch, accurate EM-wave phase prediction, as well as adaptation to 3-D dielectric structures, and can be generically applied to a wide variety of metasurface device designs across the entire electromagnetic spectrum. Using this new methodology, examples of neural networks capable of producing on-demand designs for meta-atoms, metasurface filters, and phase-change reconfigurable metasurfaces are demonstrated.

On Parameter Estimation of the Hidden Gaussian Process in perturbed SDE

We present results on parameter estimation and non-parameter estimation of the linear partially observed Gaussian system of stochastic differential equations. We propose new one-step estimators which have the same asymptotic properties as the MLE, but much more simple to calculate, the estimators are so-called "estimator-processes". The construction of the estimators is based on the equations of Kalman-Bucy filtration and the asymptotic corresponds to the small noises in the observations and state (hidden process) equations. We propose conditions which provide the consistency and asymptotic normality and asymptotic efficiency of the estimators.

Cycle-SUM: Cycle-consistent Adversarial LSTM Networks for Unsupervised Video Summarization

In this paper, we present a novel unsupervised video summarization model that requires no manual annotation. The proposed model termed Cycle-SUM adopts a new cycle-consistent adversarial LSTM architecture that can effectively maximize the information preserving and compactness of the summary video. It consists of a frame selector and a cycle-consistent learning based evaluator. The selector is a bi-direction LSTM network that learns video representations that embed the long-range relationships among video frames. The evaluator defines a learnable information preserving metric between original video and summary video and "supervises" the selector to identify the most informative frames to form the summary video. In particular, the evaluator is composed of two generative adversarial networks (GANs), in which the forward GAN is learned to reconstruct original video from summary video while the backward GAN learns to invert the processing. The consistency between the output of such cycle learning is adopted as the information preserving metric for video summarization. We demonstrate the close relation between mutual information maximization and such cycle learning procedure. Experiments on two video summarization benchmark datasets validate the state-of-the-art performance and superiority of the Cycle-SUM model over previous baselines.

Quantum Earth mover's distance, No-go Quantum Kantorovich-Rubinstein theorem, and Quantum Marginal Problem

The earth mover's distance is a measure of the distance between two probabilistic measures. It plays a fundamental role in mathematics and computer science. The Kantorovich-Rubinstein theorem provides a formula for the earth mover's distance on the space of regular probability Borel measures on a compact metric space. In this paper, we investigate the quantum earth mover's distance. We show a no-go Kantorovich-Rubinstein theorem in the quantum setting. More precisely, we show that the trace distance between two quantum states can not be determined by their earth mover's distance. The technique here is to track the bipartite quantum marginal problem. Then we provide inequality to describe the structure of quantum coupling, which can be regarded as quantum generalization of Kantorovich-Rubinstein theorem. After that, we generalize it to obtain into the tripartite version, and build a new class of necessary criteria for the tripartite marginal problem.

Modeling Treatment Delays for Patients using Feature Label Pairs in a Time Series

Pharmaceutical targeting is one of key inputs for making sales and marketing strategy planning. Targeting list is built on predicting physician's sales potential of certain type of patient. In this paper, we present a time-sensitive targeting framework leveraging time series model to predict patient's disease and treatment progression. We create time features by extracting service history within a certain period, and record whether the event happens in a look-forward period. Such feature-label pairs are examined across all time periods and all patients to train a model. It keeps the inherent order of services and evaluates features associated to the imminent future, which contribute to improved accuracy.

Object Relation Detection Based on One-shot Learning

Detecting the relations among objects, such as "cat on sofa" and "person ride horse", is a crucial task in image understanding, and beneficial to bridging the semantic gap between images and natural language. Despite the remarkable progress of deep learning in detection and recognition of individual objects, it is still a challenging task to localize and recognize the relations between objects due to the complex combinatorial nature of various kinds of object relations. Inspired by the recent advances in one-shot learning, we propose a simple yet effective Semantics Induced Learner (SIL) model for solving this challenging task. Learning in one-shot manner can enable a detection model to adapt to a huge number of object relations with diverse appearance effectively and robustly. In addition, the SIL combines bottom-up and top-down attention mech- anisms, therefore enabling attention at the level of vision and semantics favorably. Within our proposed model, the bottom-up mechanism, which is based on Faster R-CNN, proposes objects regions, and the top-down mechanism selects and integrates visual features according to semantic information. Experiments demonstrate the effectiveness of our framework over other state-of-the-art methods on two large-scale data sets for object relation detection.

Understanding Humans in Crowded Scenes: Deep Nested Adversarial Learning and A New Benchmark for Multi-Human Parsing

Despite the noticeable progress in perceptual tasks like detection, instance segmentation and human parsing, computers still perform unsatisfactorily on visually understanding humans in crowded scenes, such as group behavior analysis, person re-identification and autonomous driving, etc. To this end, models need to comprehensively perceive the semantic information and the differences between instances in a multi-human image, which is recently defined as the multi-human parsing task. In this paper, we present a new large-scale database "Multi-Human Parsing (MHP)" for algorithm development and evaluation, and advances the state-of-the-art in understanding humans in crowded scenes. MHP contains 25,403 elaborately annotated images with 58 fine-grained semantic category labels, involving 2-26 persons per image and captured in real-world scenes from various viewpoints, poses, occlusion, interactions and background. We further propose a novel deep Nested Adversarial Network (NAN) model for multi-human parsing. NAN consists of three Generative Adversarial Network (GAN)-like sub-nets, respectively performing semantic saliency prediction, instance-agnostic parsing and instance-aware clustering. These sub-nets form a nested structure and are carefully designed to learn jointly in an end-to-end way. NAN consistently outperforms existing state-of-the-art solutions on our MHP and several other datasets, and serves as a strong baseline to drive the future research for multi-human parsing.

Learning for Disparity Estimation through Feature Constancy

Stereo matching algorithms usually consist of four steps, including matching cost calculation, matching cost aggregation, disparity calculation, and disparity refinement. Existing CNN-based methods only adopt CNN to solve parts of the four steps, or use different networks to deal with different steps, making them difficult to obtain the overall optimal solution. In this paper, we propose a network architecture to incorporate all steps of stereo matching. The network consists of three parts. The first part calculates the multi-scale shared features. The second part performs matching cost calculation, matching cost aggregation and disparity calculation to estimate the initial disparity using shared features. The initial disparity and the shared features are used to calculate the feature constancy that measures correctness of the correspondence between two input images. The initial disparity and the feature constancy are then fed to a sub-network to refine the initial disparity. The proposed method has been evaluated on the Scene Flow and KITTI datasets. It achieves the state-of-the-art performance on the KITTI 2012 and KITTI 2015 benchmarks while maintaining a very fast running time.

Quantum Coupling and Strassen Theorem

We introduce a quantum generalisation of the notion of coupling in probability theory. Several interesting examples and basic properties of quantum couplings are presented. In particular, we prove a quantum extension of Strassen theorem for probabilistic couplings, a fundamental theorem in probability theory that can be used to bound the probability of an event in a distribution by the probability of an event in another distribution coupled with the first.

Immediate Causality Network of Stock Markets

A financial system contains many elements networked by their relationships. Extensive works show that topological structure of the network stores rich information on evolutionary behaviors of the system such as early warning signals of collapses and/or crises. Existing works focus mainly on the network structure within a single stock market, while a collapse/crisis occurs in a macro-scale covering several or even all markets in the world. This mismatch of scale leads to unacceptable noise to the topological structure, and lack of information stored in relationships between different markets. In this work by using the transfer entropy we reconstruct the influential network between ten typical stock markets distributed in the world. Interesting findings include, before a financial crisis the connection strength reaches a maxima, which can act as an early warning signal of financial crises; The markets in America are mono-directionally and strongly influenced by that in Europe and act as the center; Some strongly linked pairs have also close correlations. The findings are helpful in understanding the evolution and modelling the dynamical process of the global financial system.

Quenching of fluorescence for linear alkylbenzene

Linear alkylbenzene (LAB) based liquid scintillator is adopted as the central detector for the Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO) liquid scintillator detectors. A quenching factor measurement instrument is designed based on the Compton scattering process. Two different quenchers for the liquid scintillator have been investigated and the result shows that the scintillation light of the JUNO liquid scintillator can be quenched to a level. The emission spectrum with the absence of the quencher is also showing a desired behavior.
