Constraints on Yukawa-type New Forces from the Lamb Shift in Muonic Hydrogen and Deuterium

We develop an analytical framework to constrain Yukawa-type fifth-force interactions using the Lamb shift in hydrogen and deuterium. The sixfold coordinate-space integral for the energy shift is transformed into a one-dimensional momentum-space convolution of the atomic form factor and the Yukawa potential, eliminating the need for approximations. This formulation directly incorporates empirical nuclear charge distributions through their form factors, making the implementation of experimental results straightforward. Applying this method to the latest hydrogen and deuterium spectroscopy data, we derive constraints on the coupling constant $\alpha$ in the interaction range $\lambda \in [10^{-4}, 10^{6}]$~fm. A resonance-like cancellation between the $2s$ and $2p$ orbital shifts is identified at a critical range $\lambda \sim 10^{5}$~fm, where the energy shift vanishes and the constraint on $\alpha$ diverges, marking a transition between attractive and repulsive regimes. The constraints are shown to be independent of the nuclear charge distribution model. Our results indicate that the transition frequency shifts induced by such new forces lie well below current spectroscopic resolution, establishing spectroscopic precision as the primary bottleneck for probing these interactions.

Absolute frequency measurement of molecular iodine hyperfine transitions at 647 nm

We report absolute frequency measurements of the molecular iodine P(46) 5-4 $a_{1}$, $a_{10}$, and $a_{15}$ hyperfine transitions at 647 nm with a fiber-based frequency comb. The light source is based on a Littrow-type external-cavity diode laser. A frequency stability of 5 $\times$ 10$^{-12}$ at a 200 s integration time is achieved when the light source is stabilized to the P(46) 5-4 $a_{15}$ line. The pressure shift is determined to be -8.3(7) kHz/Pa. Our determination of the line centers reached a precision of 21 kHz. The light source can serve as a reference laser for lithium atom spectroscopy ($2P \to 3P$).

Precise Frequency Measurement of the 2$^{1}$S$_{0}$-3$^{1}$D$_{2}$ Two-Photon Transition in atomic $^{4}$He

We present the first precise frequency measurement of the 2$^{1}$S$_{0}$-3$^{1}$D$_{2}$ two-photon transition in $^{4}$He at 1009 nm. The laser source at 1009 nm is stabilized on an optical frequency comb to perform the absolute frequency measurement. The absolute frequency of 2$^{1}$S$_{0}$-3$^{1}$D$_{2}$ transition is experimentally determined to be 594 414 291 803(13) kHz with a relative uncertainty of 1.6 $\times$ 10$^{-11}$ which is more precise than previous determination by a factor of 25. Combined with the theoretical ionization energy of the 3$^{1}$D$_{2}$ state, the ionization energy of the 2$^{1}$S$_{0}$ state is determined to be 960 332 040 866(24) kHz. In addition, the deduced 2$^{1}$S$_{0}$ and 2$^{3}$S$_{1}$ Lamb shifts are 2806.817(24) and 4058.8(24) MHz respectively which are 1.6 times better than previous determinations.

Doppler-free intermodulated fluorescence spectroscopy of $^4He$ $2^3P-3^{1,3}D$ transitions at 588 nm with a one-watt compact laser system

We have demonstrated Doppler-free intermodulated fluorescence spectroscopy of helium $2^3P-3^{1,3}D$ transitions in an rf discharged sealed-off cell using a compact laser system at 588 nm. An external cavity diode laser at 1176 nm was constructed to seed a Raman fiber amplifier. Laser power of more than one watt at 588 nm was produced by frequency doubling of the fiber amplifier output using a MgO:PPLN crystal. A doubling efficiency of 23 % was achieved. The power-dependent spectra of the $2^3P-3^3D$ transitions were investigated. Furthermore, the Doppler-free spectrum of the spin-forbidden $2^3P-3^1D$ transitions was observed for the first time. Our results are crucial towards precision test of QED atomic calculations, especially for improving the determination of the helium $3^1D-3^3D$ separation.

New Determination of Muonium-Deuterium 1S-2S Isotope Shift

We report a new determination of muonium 1S-2S transition frequency and its isotope shift with deuterium by recalibrating the iodine reference lines using an optical frequency comb. The reference lines for the muonium and deuterium 1S-2S transitions are determined with a precision of 2.4*10^-10 and 1.7*10^-10 respectively. A new muonium-deuterium 1S-2S isotope-shift frequency is derived from these references to be 11 203 464.9(9.2)(4.0) MHz, in agreement with an updated bound-state quantum-electrodynamics prediction based on 2010 adjustments of Committee on Data for Science and Technology and 2.3 times better in the systematic uncertainty than the previous best determination.

Proton radius puzzle and large extra dimensions

We propose a theoretical scenario to solve the proton radius puzzle which recently arises from the muonic hydrogen experiment. In this framework, 4 + n dimensional theory is incorporated with modified gravity. The extra gravitational interaction between the proton and muon at very short range provides an energy shift which accounts for the discrepancy between spectroscopic results from muonic and electronic hydrogen experiments. Assuming the modified gravity is a small perturbation to the existing electromagnetic interaction, we find the puzzle can be solved with stringent constraint on the range of the new force. Our result not only provides a possible solution to the proton radius puzzle but also suggest a direction to test new physics at very small length scale.
