Moon night sky brightness simulation for Xinglong station

With a sky brightness monitor in Xinglong station of National Astronomical Observatories of China (NAOC), we collected data from 22 dark clear nights and 90 lunar nights. We first measured the sky brightness variation with time in dark nights, found a clear correlation between the sky brightness and human activity. Then with a modified sky brightness model of moon night and data from moon night, we derived the typical value for several important parameters in the model. With these results, we calculated the sky brightness distribution under a given moon condition for Xinglong station. Furthermore, we simulated the moon night sky brightness distribution in a 5 degree field of view telescope (such as LAMOST). These simulations will be helpful to determine the magnitude limit, exposure time as well as the survey design for LAMOST at lunar night.

Modeling blue stragglers in young clusters

In this paper, a grid of the binary evolution models are calculated for the study of blue straggler (BS) population in intermediate age ($\log Age$=7.85-8.95) star clusters. The BS formation via mass transfer and merging is studied systematically using our models. Both Case A and B close binary evolutionary tracks are calculated in a large range of parameters. The results show that BSs formed via Case B are generally bluer and even more luminous than those produced by Case A. Furthermore, the larger range in orbital separations of Case B models provide a probability of producing more BSs than Case A. Based on the grid of models, several Monte-Carlo simulations of BS populations in the clusters in the age range are carried out. The results show that BSs formed via different channels populate different areas in color magnitude diagram(CMD). The locations of BSs in CMD for a number of clusters are compared to our simulations as well. In order to investigate the influence of mass transfer efficiency in the models and simulations, a set of models are also calculated by implementing a constant mass transfer efficiency, $β$=0.5 during Roche lobe overflow (Case A binary evolution excluded). The result shows BSs can be formed via mass transfer at any given age in both cases. However, the distributions of the BS populations on CMD are different.

Multiwavelength study of nearly face-on low surface brightness disk galaxies

We study the ages of a large sample (1,802) of nearly face-on disk low surface brightness galaxies (LSBGs) by using the evolutionary population synthesis (EPS) model PEGASE with exponential decreasing star formation rate to fit their multiwavelength spectral energy distributions (SEDs) from far-ultraviolet (FUV) to near-infrared (NIR). The derived ages of LSBGs are 1-5 Gyr for most of the sample no matter the constant or varying dust extinction is adopted, which are similar to most of the previous studies on smaller samples. This means that these LSBGs formed their majority of stars quite recently. However, a small part of the sample (~2-3%) have larger ages as 5-8 Gyr, meaning their major star forming process may occur earlier. At the same time, a large sample (5,886) of high surface brightness galaxies (HSBGs) are selected and studied in the same method for comparisons. The derived ages are 1-5 Gyr for most of the sample (97%) as well. These may mean that probably these LSBGs have no much different star formation history from their HSBGs counterparts. But we should notice that the HSBGs are about 0.2 Gyr younger generally, which could mean that the HSBGs may have more recent star forming activities than the LSBGs.

Efficient Turbulent Compressible Convection in the Deep Stellar Atmosphere

This paper reports an application of gas-kinetic BGK scheme to the computation of turbulent compressible convection in the stellar interior. After incorporating the Sub-grid Scale (SGS) turbulence model into the BGK scheme, we tested the effects of numerical parameters on the quantitative relationships among the thermodynamic variables, their fluctuations and correlations in a very deep, initially gravity-stratified stellar atmosphere. Comparison indicates that the thermal properties and dynamic properties are dominated by different aspects of numerical models separately. An adjustable Deardorff constant in the SGS model $c_μ=0.25$ and an amplitude of artificial viscosity in the gas-kinetic BGK scheme $C_2=0$ are appropriate for current study. We also calculated the density-weighted auto- and cross-correlation functions in Xiong's (\cite{xiong77}) turbulent stellar convection theories based on which the gradient type of models of the non-local transport and the anisotropy of the turbulence are preliminarily studied. No universal relations or constant parameters were found for these models.
