Mapping Cone Connections and their Yang-Mills Functional

For a given closed two-form, we introduce the cone Yang-Mills functional which is a Yang-Mills-type functional for a pair $(A,B)$, a connection one-form $A$ and a scalar $B$ taking value in the adjoint representation of a Lie group. The functional arises naturally from dimensionally reducing the Yang-Mills functional over the fiber of a circle bundle with the two-form being the Euler class. We write down the Euler-Lagrange equations of the functional and present some of the properties of its critical solutions, especially in comparison with Yang-Mills solutions. We show that a special class of three-dimensional solutions satisfy a duality condition which generalizes the Bogomolny monopole equations. Moreover, we analyze the zero solutions of the cone Yang-Mills functional and give an algebraic classification characterizing principal bundles that carry such cone-flat solutions when the two-form is non-degenerate.

Mapping Cone and Morse Theory

On a smooth manifold, we associate to any closed differential form a mapping cone complex. The cohomology of this mapping cone complex can vary with the de Rham cohomology class of the closed form. We present a novel Morse theoretical description for the mapping cone cohomology. Specifically, we introduce a Morse complex for the mapping cone complex which is generated by pairs of critical points with the differential defined by gradient flows and an integration of the closed form over spaces of gradient flow lines. We prove that the cohomology of our cone Morse complex is isomorphic to the mapping cone cohomology and hence independent of both the Riemannian metric and the Morse function used to define the complex. We also obtain sharp inequalities that bound the dimension of the mapping cone cohomology in terms of the number of Morse critical points and the properties of the specified closed form. Our results are widely applicable, especially for any manifold equipped with a geometric structure described by a closed differential form. We also obtain a bound on the difference between the number of Morse critical points and the Betti numbers.

Symplectic Morse Theory and Witten Deformation

On symplectic manifolds, we introduce a Morse-type complex with elements generated by pairs of critical points of a Morse function. The differential of the complex consists of gradient flows and an integration of the symplectic structure over spaces of gradient flow lines. Using the Witten deformation method, we prove that the cohomology of this complex is independent of both the Riemannian metric and the Morse function used to define the complex and is in fact isomorphic to the cohomology of differential forms of Tsai, Tseng and Yau (TTY). We also obtain Morse-type inequalities that bound the dimensions of the TTY cohomologies by the number of Morse critical points and the interaction of symplectic structure with the critical points.

Symplectically Flat Connections and Their Functionals

We continue our study of symplectically flat bundles. We broaden the notion of symplectically flat connections on symplectic manifolds to $\zeta$-flat connections on smooth manifolds. These connections on principal bundles can be represented by maps from an extension of the base's fundamental group to the structure group. We introduce functionals with zeroes being symplectically flat connections and study their critical points. Such functionals lead to novel geometric flows. We also describe some characteristic classes of the $\zeta$-flat bundles.

Symplectic Flatness and Twisted Primitive Cohomology

We introduce the notion of symplectic flatness for connections and fiber bundles over symplectic manifolds. Given an $A_\infty$-algebra, we present a flatness condition that enables the twisting of the differential complex associated with the $A_\infty$-algebra. The symplectic flatness condition arises from twisting the $A_\infty$-algebra of differential forms constructed by Tsai, Tseng and Yau. When the symplectic manifold is equipped with a compatible metric, the symplectic flat connections represent a special subclass of Yang-Mills connections. We further study the cohomologies of the twisted differential complex and give a simple vanishing theorem for them.

Symplectic Structures with Non-Isomorphic Primitive Cohomology on open 4-Manifolds

We analyze four-dimensional symplectic manifolds of type $X=S^1 \times M^3$ where $M^3$ is an open $3$-manifold admitting inequivalent fibrations leading to inequivalent symplectic structures on $X$. For the case where $M^3 \subset S^3$ is the complement of a $4$-component link constructed by McMullen-Taubes, we provide a general algorithm for computing the monodromy of the fibrations explicitly. We use this algorithm to show that certain inequivalent symplectic structures are distinguished by the dimensions of the primitive cohomologies of differential forms on $X$. We also calculate the primitive cohomologies on $X$ for a class of open $3$-manifolds that are complements of a family of fibered graph links in $S^3$. In this case, we show that there exist pairs of symplectic forms on $X$, arising from either equivalent or inequivalent pairs of fibrations on the link complement, that have different dimensions of the primitive cohomologies.

Symplectic Boundary Conditions and Cohomology

We introduce new boundary conditions for differential forms on symplectic manifolds with boundary. These boundary conditions, dependent on the symplectic structure, allows us to write down elliptic boundary value problems for both second-order and fourth-order symplectic Laplacians and establish Hodge theories for the cohomologies of primitive forms on manifolds with boundary. We further use these boundary conditions to define a relative version of the primitive cohomologies and to relate primitive cohomologies with Lefschetz maps on manifolds with boundary. As we show, these cohomologies of primitive forms can distinguish certain K\"ahler structures of K\"ahler manifolds with boundary.

Odd sphere bundles, symplectic manifolds, and their intersection theory

Recently, Tsai-Tseng-Yau constructed new invariants of symplectic manifolds: a sequence of Aoo-algebras built of differential forms on the symplectic manifold. We show that these symplectic Aoo-algebras have a simple topological interpretation. Namely, when the cohomology class of the symplectic form is integral, these Aoo-algebras are equivalent to the standard de Rham differential graded algebra on certain odd-dimensional sphere bundles over the symplectic manifold. From this equivalence, we deduce for a closed symplectic manifold that Tsai-Tseng-Yau's symplectic Aoo-algebras satisfy the Calabi-Yau property, and importantly, that they can be used to define an intersection theory for coisotropic/isotropic chains. We further demonstrate that these symplectic Aoo-algebras satisfy several functorial properties and lay the groundwork for addressing Weinstein functoriality and invariance in the smooth category.

Hodge Theory and Symplectic Boundary Conditions

We study symplectic Laplacians on compact symplectic manifolds with boundary. These Laplacians are associated with symplectic cohomologies of differential forms and can be of fourth-order. We introduce several natural boundary conditions on differential forms and use them to establish Hodge theory by proving various form decomposition and also isomorphisms between the symplectic cohomologies and the spaces of harmonic fields. These novel boundary conditions can be applied in certain cases to study relative symplectic cohomologies and Lefschetz maps between relative de Rham cohomologies. As an application, our results are used to solve boundary value problems of differential forms.

Non-Kaehler SYZ mirror symmetry

We study SYZ mirror symmetry in the context of non-Kaehler Calabi-Yau manifolds. In particular, we study the six-dimensional Type II supersymmetric $SU(3)$ systems with Ramond-Ramond fluxes, and generalize them to higher dimensions. We show that Fourier-Mukai transform provides the mirror map between these Type IIA and Type IIB supersymmetric systems in the semi-flat setting. This is concretely exhibited by nilmanifolds.

Cohomology and Hodge Theory on Symplectic Manifolds: III

We introduce filtered cohomologies of differential forms on symplectic manifolds. They generalize and include the cohomologies discussed in Paper I and II as a subset. The filtered cohomologies are finite-dimensional and can be associated with differential elliptic complexes. Algebraically, we show that the filtered cohomologies give a two-sided resolution of Lefschetz maps, and thereby, they are directly related to the kernels and cokernels of the Lefschetz maps. We also introduce a novel, non-associative product operation on differential forms for symplectic manifolds. This product generates an A-infinity algebra structure on forms that underlies the filtered cohomologies and gives them a ring structure. As an application, we demonstrate how the ring structure of the filtered cohomologies can distinguish different symplectic four-manifolds in the context of a circle times a fibered three-manifold.

Cohomology and Hodge Theory on Symplectic Manifolds: I

We introduce new finite-dimensional cohomologies on symplectic manifolds. Each exhibits Lefschetz decomposition and contains a unique harmonic representative within each class. Associated with each cohomology is a primitive cohomology defined purely on the space of primitive forms. We identify the dual currents of lagrangians and more generally coisotropic submanifolds with elements of a primitive cohomology, which dualizes to a homology on coisotropic chains.

Cohomology and Hodge Theory on Symplectic Manifolds: II

We show that the exterior derivative operator on a symplectic manifold has a natural decomposition into two linear differential operators, analogous to the Dolbeault operators in complex geometry. These operators map primitive forms into primitive forms and therefore lead directly to the construction of primitive cohomologies on symplectic manifolds. Using these operators, we introduce new primitive cohomologies that are analogous to the Dolbeault cohomology in the complex theory. Interestingly, the finiteness of these primitive cohomologies follows directly from an elliptic complex. We calculate the known primitive cohomologies on a nilmanifold and show that their dimensions can vary depending on the class of the symplectic form.

Generalized Cohomologies and Supersymmetry

We show that the complex cohomologies of Bott, Chern, and Aeppli and the symplectic cohomologies of Tseng and Yau arise in the context of type II string theory. Specifically, they can be used to count a subset of scalar moduli fields in Minkowski compactification with RR fluxes in the presence of either O5/D5 or O6/D6 brane sources, respectively. Further, we introduce a new set of cohomologies within the generalized complex geometry framework which interpolate between these known complex and symplectic cohomologies. The generalized complex cohomologies play the analogous role for counting massless fields for a general supersymmetric Minkowski type II compactification with Ramond-Ramond flux.

New Heterotic Non-Kahler Geometries

New heterotic torsional geometries are constructed as orbifolds of T^2 bundles over K3. The discrete symmetries considered can be freely-acting or have fixed points and/or fixed curves. We give explicit constructions when the base K3 is Kummer or algebraic. The orbifold geometries can preserve N=1,2 supersymmetry in four dimensions or be non-supersymmetric.

Local Heterotic Torsional Models

We present a class of smooth supersymmetric heterotic solutions with a non-compact Eguchi-Hanson space. The non-compact geometry is embedded as the base of a six-dimensional non-Kahler manifold with a non-trivial torus fiber. We solve the non-linear anomaly equation in this background exactly. We also define a new charge that detects the non-Kahlerity of our solutions.

Moduli Space of Torsional Manifolds

We characterize the geometric moduli of non-Kaehler manifolds with torsion. Heterotic supersymmetric flux compactifications require that the six-dimensional internal manifold be balanced, the gauge bundle be hermitian Yang-Mills, and also the anomaly cancellation be satisfied. We perform the linearized variation of these constraints to derive the defining equations for the local moduli. We explicitly determine the metric deformations of the smooth flux solution corresponding to a torus bundle over K3.

Heterotic Kahler/non-Kahler Transitions

We show how two topologically distinct spaces - the Kahler K3 x T^2 and the non-Kahler T^2 bundle over K3 - can be smoothly connected in heterotic string theory. The transition occurs when the base K3 is deformed to the T^4/Z_2 orbifold limit. The orbifold theory can be mapped via duality to M-theory on K3 x K3 where the transition corresponds to an exchange of the two K3's.
