Gemini Planet Imager Observations of the AU Microscopii Debris Disk: Asymmetries within One Arcsecond

We present Gemini Planet Imager (GPI) observations of AU Microscopii, a young M dwarf with an edge-on, dusty debris disk. Integral field spectroscopy and broadband imaging polarimetry were obtained during the commissioning of GPI. In our broadband imaging polarimetry observations, we detect the disk only in total intensity and find asymmetries in the morphology of the disk between the southeast and northwest sides. The southeast side of the disk exhibits a bump at 1$''$ (10 AU projected separation) that is three times more vertically extended and three times fainter in peak surface brightness than the northwest side at similar separations. This part of the disk is also vertically offset by 69$\pm$30 mas to the northeast at 1$''$ when compared to the established disk mid-plane and consistent with prior ALMA and Hubble Space Telescope/STIS observations. We see hints that the southeast bump might be a result of detecting a horizontal sliver feature above the main disk that could be the disk backside. Alternatively when including the morphology of the northwest side, where the disk mid-plane is offset in the opposite direction $\sim$50 mas between 0$.''$4 and 1$.''$2, the asymmetries suggest a warp-like feature. Using our integral field spectroscopy data to search for planets, we are 50% complete for $\sim$4 $M_\mathrm{Jup}$ planets at 4 AU. We detect a source, resolved only along the disk plane, that could either be a candidate planetary mass companion or a compact clump in the disk.

Discovery of Resolved Debris Disk Around HD 131835

We report the discovery of the resolved disk around HD 131835 and present the analysis and modeling of its thermal emission. HD 131835 is a ~15 Myr A2 star in the Scorpius-Centaurus OB association at a distance of 122.7 +16.2 -12.8 parsec. The extended disk has been detected to ~1.5" (200 AU) at 11.7 μm and 18.3 μm with T-ReCS on Gemini South. The disk is inclined at an angle of ~75° with the position angle of ~61°. The flux of HD 131835 system is 49.3+-7.6 mJy and 84+-45 mJy at 11.7 μm and 18.3 μm respectively. A model with three grain populations gives a satisfactory fit to both the spectral energy distribution and the images simultaneously. This best-fit model is composed of a hot continuous power-law disk and two rings. We characterized the grain temperature profile and found that the grains in all three populations are emitting at temperatures higher than blackbodies. In particular, the grains in the continuous disk are unusually warm; even when considering small graphite particles as the composition.

Suzaku X-ray Spectra and Pulse Profile Variations during the Superorbital Cycle of LMC X-4

We present results from spectral and temporal analyses of Suzaku and RXTE observations of the high mass X-ray binary LMC X-4. Using the full 13 years of available RXTE/ASM data, we apply the ANOVA and Lomb normalized Periodogram methods to obtain an improved superorbital period measurement of 30.32 +/- 0.04 days. The phase-averaged X-ray spectra from Suzaku observations during the high state of the superorbital period can be modeled in the 0.6--50 keV band as the combination of a power-law with Gamma ~ 0.6 and a high-energy cutoff at ~ 25 keV, a blackbody with kT_BB ~ 0.18 keV, and emission lines from Fe K_alpha, O VIII, and Ne IX (X Lyalpha). Assuming a distance of 50 kpc, The source has luminosity L_X ~ 3 x 10^38 ergs s^-1 in the 2--50 keV band, and the luminosity of the soft (blackbody) component is L_BB ~ 1.5 x 10^37 ergs s^-1. The energy resolved pulse profiles show single-peaked soft (0.5-1 keV) and hard (6-10 keV) pulses but a more complex pattern of medium (2-10 keV) pulses; cross-correlation of the hard with the soft pulses shows a phase shift that varies between observations. We interpret these results in terms of a picture in which a precessing disk reprocesses the hard X-rays and produces the observed soft spectral component, as has been suggested for the similar sources Her X-1 and SMC X-1.

The faint end of the galaxy luminosity function in Abell 1689: a steep red faint end upturn at $z=0.18$

We present a deep and wide $I$ luminosity function for galaxies in Abell 1689 ($z=0.183$) from a mosaic of HST WFPC2 images covering $10'$ on the side. The main result of this work is the detection of a steep upturn in the dwarf galaxy LF, with $α\sim -2$. The dwarf to giant ratio appears to increase outwards, but this is because giant galaxies are missing in the cluster outskirts, indicating luminosity segregation. The red sequence LF has the same parameters, within errors, as the total LF, showing that the faint end upturn consists of red quiescent galaxies. We speculate that the upturn is connected to the `filling-in' of the red sequence at $z < 0.4$ and may represent the latest installment of `downsizing' as the least massive galaxies are being quenched at the present epoch.

The galaxy alignment effect in Abell 1689: evolution, radial and luminosity dependence

We measure alignments on scales of 1 Mpc $h^{-1}_{71}$ for galaxies in Abell 1689 ($z=0.18$) from an existing Hubble Space Telescope mosaic. We find evidence of galaxy alignment in the inner 500 $h^{-1}_{71}$ kpc. The alignment appears to be stronger towards the centre and is mostly present among the fainter galaxies, while bright galaxies are unaligned. This is consistent with a model where alignments originate from tidal locking.
