Landau damping on expanding backgrounds

We analyse the effect of expansion in Newtonian cosmology on the asymptotic behaviour of charged self-interacting plasmas close to Poisson equilibria. To this end, we study the Vlasov-Poisson system on the phase space of a $3$-torus which is expanding with respect to the scale factor $a(t)$. We show that, for $a(t)=t^q$ with $q\in(0,\frac12)$, solutions to this system exhibit nonlinear Landau damping for initial data that is small with respect to a suitably strong Gevrey class, i.e., the charge density contrast of the plasma decays superpolynomially. For larger choices of $q$ within this range, the initial data requirements become stricter while the decay weakens. To our knowledge, this is the first result showing Landau damping in a cosmological setting.

Quiescent Big Bang formation in $2+1$ dimensions

In this paper, we study the past asymptotics of $(2+1)$-dimensional solutions to the Einstein scalar-field Vlasov system which are close to Friedman-Lema\^itre-Robertson-Walker spacetimes on an initial hypersurface diffeomorphic to a closed orientable surface $M$ of arbitrary genus. We prove that such solutions are past causally geodesically incomplete, form a curvature singularity and exhibit stable Kretschmann scalar blow-up in the contracting direction. In particular, the spacetime is $C^2$-inextendible towards the past where causal geodesics become incomplete. Moreover, we show that geometry and matter are asymptotically velocity term dominated toward the past, remaining close to their background counterparts. When viewed on the co-mass shell, the Vlasov distribution in particular converges to a limiting distribution on the Big Bang hypersurface, while asymptotics of the spatial metric lead to slight degeneracies when trying to control the components of the Vlasov energy-momentum tensor. These also manifest when viewing the distribution function on the mass shell, where velocities generally approach a smooth one-dimensional subbundle of the tangent bundle, leading the distribution to become highly anisotropic, when viewed in terms of the geometry induced by the constant curvature spatial reference metric. Compared to previous results in higher dimensions, in particular [FU25b], inhomogeneous terms in the wave and Vlasov equations factor in more strongly in our setting, which a priori creates additional hurdles at high orders while largely keeping the quiescent system intact. As a corollary, our main result shows that the Strong Cosmic Censorship conjecture holds for certain polarized $U(1)$-symmetric solutions to the Einstein vacuum equations that emanate from a spatial hypersurface diffeomorphic to $M\times\mathbb{S}^1$.

On the past maximal development of near-FLRW data for the Einstein scalar-field Vlasov system

We show that the maximal globally hyperbolic development of near-FLRW initial data for the Einstein scalar-field Vlasov system exhibits stable Big Bang formation in the collapsing direction. The solutions exhibit stable Kretschmann scalar blow-up, causing the spacetime to become causally geodesically past incomplete, and are asymptotically velocity term dominated. This is the first stability result for the Einstein equations in the collapsing spacetime direction in presence of Vlasov matter that does not rely on any symmetry assumptions. Furthermore, the Vlasov distribution remains close to that of the FLRW solution as a function on the co-mass shell, and so does its momentum support if one assumes it to be close to that of the FLRW distribution initially. On the other hand, the leading order terms in components of the Vlasov energy-momentum tensor exbihit an offset in asymptotic order controlled by the perturbation size, and when viewed on the mass shell, the distribution asymptotically concentrates in certain preferred velocity directions. To ensure that this behaviour is sufficiently mitigated by the scalar field, we crucially exploit a scaling hierarchy between horizontal and vertical derivatives in the commuted Vlasov equation.

Cosmic Censorship near FLRW spacetimes with negative spatial curvature

We consider general initial data for the Einstein scalar-field system on a closed $3$-manifold $(M,\gamma)$ which is close to data for a Friedman-Lema\^itre-Robertson-Walker solution with homogeneous scalar field matter and a negative Einstein metric $\gamma$ as spatial geometry. We prove that the maximal globally hyperbolic development of such initial data in the Einstein scalar-field system is past incomplete in the contracting direction and exhibits stable collapse into a Big Bang curvature singularity. Under an additional condition on the first positive eigenvalue of $-\Delta_\gamma$ satisfied, for example, by closed hyperbolic 3-manifolds of small diameter, we prove that the data evolves to a future complete spacetime in the expanding direction which asymptotes to a vacuum Friedman solution with $(M,\gamma)$ as the expansion normalized spatial geometry. In particular, the Strong Cosmic Censorship conjecture holds for this class of solutions in the $C^{2}$-sense.

Blow-up of waves on singular spacetimes with generic spatial metrics

We study the asymptotic behaviour of solutions to the linear wave equation on cosmological spacetimes with Big Bang singularities and show that appropriately rescaled waves converge against a blow-up profile. Our class of spacetimes includes Friedman-Lemaître-Robertson-Walker (FLRW) spacetimes with negative sectional curvature that solve the Einstein equations in presence of a perfect irrotational fluid with $p=(γ-1)ρ$. As such, these results are closely related to the still open problem of past nonlinear stability of such FLRW spacetimes within the Einstein scalar field equations. In contrast to earlier works, our results hold for spatial metrics of arbitrary geometry, hence indicating that the matter blow-up in the aforementioned problem is not dependent on spatial geometry. Additionally, we use the energy estimates derived in the proof in order to formulate open conditions on the initial data that ensure a non-trivial blow-up profile, for initial data sufficiently close to the Big Bang singularity and with less harsh assumptions for $γ<2$.

Space versus energy oscillations of Prüfer phases for matrix Sturm-Liouville and Jacobi operators

This note considers Sturm oscillation theory for regular matrix Sturm-Liouville operators on finite intervals and for matrix Jacobi operators. The number of space oscillations of the eigenvalues of the matrix Prüfer phases at a given energy, defined by a suitable lift in the Jacobi case, is shown to be equal to the number of eigenvalues below that energy. This results from a positivity property of the Prüfer phases, namely they cannot cross $-1$ in the negative direction, and is also shown to be closely linked to the positivity of the matrix Prüfer phase in the energy variable. The theory is illustrated by numerical calculations for an explicit example.
