Instructive Feature Enhancement for Dichotomous Medical Image Segmentation

Deep neural networks have been widely applied in dichotomous medical image segmentation (DMIS) of many anatomical structures in several modalities, achieving promising performance. However, existing networks tend to struggle with task-specific, heavy and complex designs to improve accuracy. They made little instructions to which feature channels would be more beneficial for segmentation, and that may be why the performance and universality of these segmentation models are hindered. In this study, we propose an instructive feature enhancement approach, namely IFE, to adaptively select feature channels with rich texture cues and strong discriminability to enhance raw features based on local curvature or global information entropy criteria. Being plug-and-play and applicable for diverse DMIS tasks, IFE encourages the model to focus on texture-rich features which are especially important for the ambiguous and challenging boundary identification, simultaneously achieving simplicity, universality, and certain interpretability. To evaluate the proposed IFE, we constructed the first large-scale DMIS dataset Cosmos55k, which contains 55,023 images from 7 modalities and 26 anatomical structures. Extensive experiments show that IFE can improve the performance of classic segmentation networks across different anatomies and modalities with only slight modifications. Inverted Non-maximum Suppression for more Accurate and Neater Face Detection

CNN-based face detection methods have achieved significant progress in recent years. In addition to the strong representation ability of CNN, post-processing methods are also very important for the performance of face detection. In general, the face detection method predicts several candidate bounding-boxes for one face. NMS is used to filter out inaccurate candidate boxes to get the most accurate box. The principle of NMS is to select the box with a higher score as the basic box and then delete the box which has a large overlapping area with the basic box but has a lower score. However, the current NMS method and its improved versions do not perform well when face image quality is poor or faces are in a cluster. In these situations, even after NMS filtering, there is often a face corresponding to multiple predicted boxes. To reduce this kind of negative result, in this paper, we propose a new NMS method that operates in the reverse order of other NMS methods. Our method performs well on low-quality and tiny face samples. Experiments demonstrate that our method is effective as a post-processor for different face detection methods.

The universal scaling of kinetic freeze-out parameters across different collision systems at the LHC energy

In this paper, we perform the Tsallis Blast-Wave analysis on the transverse momentum spectra of identified hadrons produced in a wide range of collision systems at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) including pp, pPb, XeXe and PbPb collisions. The kinetic freeze-out properties are investigated across these systems varying with the event multiplicity. We find that the extracted kinetic freeze-out temperature, radial flow velocity and the non-extensive parameter exhibit a universal scaling behavior for these systems with very different geometric size, especially when the independent baryon Tsallis non-extensive parameter is considered. This universality may indicate the existence of a unified partonic evolution stage in different collision systems at the LHC energies.

Uniaxial pressure effect on the magnetic ordered moment and transition temperatures in BaFe$_{2-x}T_x$As$_2$ ($T=$Co, Ni)

We use neutron diffraction and muon spin relaxation to study the effect of in-plane uniaxial pressure on the antiferromagnetic (AF) orthorhombic phase in BaFe$_2$As$_2$ and its Co- and Ni-substituted members near optimal superconductivity. In the low temperature AF ordered state, uniaxial pressure necessary to detwin the orthorhombic crystals also increases the magnetic ordered moment, reaching an 11$\%$ increase under 40 MPa for BaFe$_{1.9}$Co$_{0.1}$As$_2$, and a 15$\%$ increase for BaFe$_{1.915}$Ni$_{0.085}$As$_2$. We also observe an increase of the AF ordering temperature ($T_N$) of about 0.25 K/MPa in all compounds, consistent with density functional theory calculations that reveal better Fermi surface nesting for itinerant electrons under uniaxial pressure. The doping dependence of the magnetic ordered moment is captured by combining dynamical mean field theory with density functional theory, suggesting that the pressure-induced moment increase near optimal superconductivity is closely related to quantum fluctuations and the nearby electronic nematic phase.

Volume-wise destruction of the antiferromagnetic Mott insulating state through quantum tuning

Metal-to-insulator transitions (MITs) are a dramatic manifestation of strong electron correlations in solids1. The insulating phase can often be suppressed by quantum tuning, i.e. varying a nonthermal parameter such as chemical composi- tion or pressure, resulting in a zero-temperature quantum phase transition (QPT) to a metallic state driven by quantum fluctuations, in contrast to conventional phase transitions driven by thermal fluctuations. Theories of exotic phenomena known to occur near the Mott QPT such as quantum criticality and high-temperature superconductivity often assume a second-order QPT, but direct experimental evidence for either first- or second-order behavior at the magnetic QPT associated with the Mott transition has been scarce and further masked by the superconducting phase in unconventional superconductors. Most measurements of QPTs have been performed by volume-integrated probes, such as neutron scattering, magnetization, and transport, in which discontinuous behavior, phase separation, and spatially inhomogeneous responses are averaged and smeared out, leading at times to misidentification as continuous second-order transitions. Here, we demonstrate through muon spin relaxation/rotation (MuSR) experiments on two archetypal Mott insulating systems, composition-tuned RENiO3 (RE=rare earth element) and pressured-tuned V2O3, that the QPT from antiferromagnetic insulator to paramagnetic metal is first-order: the magnetically ordered volume fraction decreases to zero at the QPT, resulting in a broad region of intrinsic phase separation, while the ordered magnetic moment retains its full value across the phase diagram until it is suddenly destroyed at the QPT. These findings call for further investigation into the role of inelastic soft modes and the nature of dynamic spin and charge fluctuations underlying the transition.

Coexistence of superconductivity and antiferromagnetism in Ca$_{0.74(1)}$La$_{0.26(1)}$(Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_{x}$)As$_{2}$ single crystals

We report the transport, thermodynamic, $μ$SR and neutron study of the Ca$_{0.74(1)}$La$_{0.26(1)}$(Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_{x}$)As$_{2}$ single crystals, mapping out the temperature-doping level phase diagram. Upon Co substitution on the Fe site, the structural/magnetic phase transitions in this 112 compound are suppressed and superconductivity up to 20 K occurs. Our measurements of the superconducting and magnetic volume fractions show that these two phases coexist microscopically in the underdoped region, in contrast to the related 10-3-8 Ca$_{10}$(Pt$_{3}$As$_{8}$)((Fe$_{1-x}$Pt$_x$)$_{2}$As$_{2}$)$_{5}$ compound, where coexistence is absent. Supported by model calculations, we discuss the differences in the phase diagrams of the 112 and 10-3-8 compounds in terms of the FeAs interlayer coupling, whose strength is affected by the character of the spacer layer, which is metallic in the 112 and insulating in the 10-3-8.

Structural and magnetic phase transitions in Ca$_{0.73}$La$_{0.27}$FeAs$_2$ with electron overdoped FeAs layers

We report a study of the Ca$_{0.73}$La$_{0.27}$FeAs$_2$ single crystals. We unravel a monoclinic to triclinic phase transition at 58 K, and a paramagnetic to stripe antiferromagnetic (AFM) phase transition at 54 K, below which spins order 45$^\circ$ away from the stripe direction. Furthermore, we demonstrate this material is substantially structurally untwinned at ambient pressure with the formation of spin rotation walls (S-walls). Finally, in addition to the central-hole and corner-electron Fermi pockets usually appearing in Fe pnictide superconductors, angle-resolved photoemission (ARPES) measurements resolve a Fermiology where an extra electron pocket of mainly As chain character exists at the Brillouin zone edge.

Wake Potential in Strong Coupling Plasma from AdS/CFT Correspondence

With the dielectric function computed from AdS/CFT correspondence, we studied the wake potential induced by a fast moving charge in strong coupling plasma, and compared it with the weak coupling wake potential for different particle velocities as $v=0.55c$ and $v=0.99c$. The most prominent difference between strong and weak wake potential is that when $v=0.99c$ the remarkable oscillation due to Cerenkov-like radiation and Mach cone in weak coupling disappears in strong coupling, which implies that the plasmon mode with phase velocity lower than the speed of light dose not exist in strong coupling plasma.

The Statics Dielectric Function and Interaction Potential In Strong Coupling With AdS/CFT

In this paper, we studied the static dielectric function and interaction potential in strong coupling limit with AdS/CFT correspondence. The dielectric function is depressed compared with that in weak coupling. The interaction potential then presents a weaker screening characteristics in strong coupling, which indicates a smaller Debye mass compared with weak coupling.

We calculate all components of thermal R-current correlators from AdS/CFT correspondence for non-zero momentum and energy. In zero momentum limit, we find an analytic expression for the components Gxx(Gyy). The dielectric function of strong coupling is also presented and compared with that in weak coupling.

New Diluted Ferromagnetic Semiconductor isostructural to 122 type iron pnictide superconductor with TC up to 180 K

Diluted magnetic semiconductors (DMS) have received much attention due to its potential applications to spintronics devices. A prototypical system (Ga,Mn)As has been widely studied since 1990s. The simultaneous spin and charge doping via hetero-valence (Ga3+,Mn2+) substitution, however, resulted in severely limited solubility without availability of bulk specimens. Previously we synthesized a new diluted ferromagnetic semiconductor of bulk Li(Zn,Mn)As with Tc up to 50K, where isovalent (Zn,Mn) spin doping was separated from charge control via Li concentrations. Here we report the synthesis of a new diluted ferromagnetic semiconductor (Ba1-xKx)(Zn1-yMny)2As2, isostructural to iron 122 system, where holes are doped via (Ba2+, K1+), while spins via (Zn2+,Mn2+) substitutions. Bulk samples with x=0.1-0.3 and y=0.05-0.15 exhibit ferromagnetic order with TC up to 180K, comparable to that of record high Tc for Ga(MnAs), significantly enhanced than Li(Zn,Mn)As. Moreover the (Ba,K)(Zn,Mn)2As2 shares the same 122 crystal structure with semiconducting BaZn2As2, antiferromagnetic BaMn2As2, and superconducting (Ba,K)Fe2As2, which makes them promising to the development of multilayer functional devices.
