Symmetry restoration and quantumness reestablishment

A realistic quantum many-body system, characterized by a generic microscopic Hamiltonian, is accessible only through approximation methods. The mean field theories, as the simplest practices of approximation methods, commonly serve as a powerful tool, but unfortunately often violate the symmetry of the Hamiltonian. The conventional BCS theory, as an excellent mean field approach, violates the particle number conservation and completely erases quantumness characterized by concurrence and quantum discord between different modes. We restore the symmetry by using the projected BCS theory and the exact numerical solution and find that the lost quantumness is synchronously reestablished. We show that while entanglement remains unchanged with the particle numbers, quantum discord behaves as an extensive quantity with respect to the system size. Surprisingly, discord is hardly dependent on the interaction strengths. The new feature of discord offers promising applications in modern quantum technologies.

Uhrig Dynamical Control of a Three-Level System Via Non-Markovian Quantum State Diffusion

In this paper, we use the quantum state diffusion (QSD) equation to implement the Uhrig dynamical decoupling (UDD) to a three-level quantum system coupled to a non-Markovian reservoir comprising of infinite numbers of degrees of freedom. For this purpose, we first reformulate the non-Markovian QSD to incorporate the effect of the external control fields. With this stochastic QSD approach, we demonstrate that an unknown state of the three-level quantum system can be universally protected against both colored phase and amplitude noises when the control-pulse sequences and control operators are properly designed. The advantage of using non-Markovian quantum state diffusion equations is that the control dynamics of open quantum systems can be treated exactly without using Trotter product formula and be efficiently simulated even when the environment comprise of infinite numbers of degrees of freedom. We also show how the control efficacy depends on the environment memory time and the designed time points of applied control pulses.

Quantum circuits for amplification of Kerr nonlinearity via quadrature squeezing

Phase shifts induced by the Kerr effect are usually very small at the single-photon level. We propose two circuits for enhancing the cross-Kerr phase shift by applying one- and two-mode quadrature squeezing operators. Our results are based on the vector coherent state theory and can be implemented by physical operations satisfying the commutation relations for generators of the generalized special unitary group SU(1,1). While the proposed methods could be useful for the realization of quantum optical entangling gates based on Kerr nonlinear media at the single-photon level, they also indicate a general alternative approach to enhance higher-order nonlinearities by applying lower-order nonlinear effects.

Random Control over Quantum Open Systems

Parametric fluctuations or stochastic signals are introduced into the control pulse sequence to investigate the feasibility of random control over quantum open systems. In a large parameter error region, the out-of-order control pulses work as well as the regular pulses for dynamical decoupling and dissipation suppression. Calculations and analysis are based on a non-perturbative control approach allowed by an exact quantum-state-diffusion equation. When the average frequency and duration of the pulse sequence take proper values, the random control sequence is robust, fault- tolerant, and insensitive to pulse strength deviations and interpulse temporal separation in the quasi-periodic sequence. This relaxes the operational requirements placed on quantum control experiments to a great deal.

Quantum correlations in bulk properties of solids obtained from neutron scattering

We demonstrate that inelastic neutron scattering technique can be used to indirectly detect and measure the macroscopic quantum correlations quantified by both entanglement and discord in a quantum magnetic material, VODPO4 . 1D2O. The amount of quantum correlations is obtained 2 by analyzing the neutron scattering data of magnetic excitations in isolated V4+ spin dimers. Our quantitative analysis shows that the critical temperature of this material can reach as high as Tc = 82.5 K, where quantum entanglement drops to zero. Significantly, quantum discord can even survive at Tc = 300 K and may be used in room temperature quantum devices. Taking into account the spin-orbit (SO) coupling, we also predict theoretically that entanglement can be significantly enhanced and the critical temperature Tc increases with the strength of spin-orbit coupling.

Fault-tolerant breathing pattern in optical lattices as a dynamical quantum memory

Proposals for quantum information processing often require the development of new quantum tech- nologies. However, here we build quantum memory by ultracold atoms in one-dimensional optical lattices with existing state-of-the-art technology. Under a parabolic external field, we demonstrate that an arbitrary initial state at an end of the optical lattices can time-evolve and revive, with very high fidelity, at predictable discrete time intervals. Physically, the parabolic field, can catalyze a breathing pattern. The initial state is memorized by the pattern and can be retrieved at any of the revival time moments. In comparison with usual time-independent memory, we call this a dynamical memory. Furthermore, we show that the high fidelity of the quantum state at revival time moments is fault-tolerant against the fabrication defects and even time-dependent noise.

Driving a mechanical resonator in to coherent states via random measurements

We propose dynamical schemes to engineer coherent states of a mechanical resonator coupled to an ancillary, superconducting flux qubit. The flux qubit, when repeatedly projected on to its ground state drives the mechanical resonator in to a coherent state in probabilistic, albeit heralded fashion. Assuming no operations on the state of the mechanical resonator during the protocol, coherent states are successfully generated only up to a certain value of the displacement parameter. This restriction can be overcome at the cost of a one-time operation on the initial state of the mechanical resonator. We discuss the possibility of experimental realization of the presented schemes.

Non-Perturbative Quantum Dynamical Decoupling

Current dynamical control based on the bang-bang control mechanism involving various types of pulse sequences is essentially a perturbative theory. This paper presents a non-perturbative dynamical control approach based on the exact stochastic Schrödinger equation. We report our findings on the pulse parameter regions in which the effective dynamical control can be exercised. The onset of the effective control zones reflects the non-perturbative feature of our approach. The non-perturbative methods offer possible new implementations when several different parameter regions are available.

One Component Dynamical Equation and Noise Induced Adiabaticity

The adiabatic theorem addresses the dynamics of a target instantaneous eigenstate of a time-dependent Hamiltonian. We use a Feshbach P-Q partitioning technique to derive a closed one-component integro-differential equation. The resultant equation properly traces the footprint of the target eigenstate. The physical significance of the derived dynamical equation is illustrated by both general analysis and concrete examples. Surprisingly, we find an anomalous phenomenon showing that a dephasing white noise can enhance and even induce adiabaticity. This new phenomenon may naturally occur in many physical systems. We also show that white noises can also shorten the total duration of dynamic processes such as adiabatic quantum computing.

Control of decoherence with no control

Common philosophy in control theory is the control of disorder by order. It is not exceptional for strategies suppressing quantum decoherence. Here we predict an anomalous quantum phenomenon. Suppression of decoherence can be made via more disordered white noise field, in particular white Poissonian noise. The phenomenon seems to be another anomaly in quantum mechanics, and may offer a new strategy in quantum control practices.

No-go theorem for passive single-rail linear optical quantum computing

Photonic quantum systems are among the most promising architectures for quantum computers. It is well known that for dual-rail photons effective non-linearities and near-deterministic non-trivial two-qubit gates can be achieved via the measurement process and by introducing ancillary photons. While in principle this opens a legitimate path to scalable linear optical quantum computing, the technical requirements are still very challenging and thus other optical encodings are being actively investigated. One of the alternatives is to use single-rail encoded photons, where entangled states can be deterministically generated. Here we prove that even for such systems universal optical quantum computing using only passive optical elements such as beam splitters and phase shifters is not possible. This no-go theorem proves that photon bunching cannot be passively suppressed even when extra ancilla modes and arbitrary number of photons are used. Our result provides useful guidance for the design of optical quantum computers.

Quantum states experimentally achieving high-fidelity transmission over a spin chain

A uniformly coupled double quantum Hamiltonian for a spin chain has recently been implemented experimentally. We propose a method for the determination of initial quantum states that will provide perfect or near-perfect state transmission for an arbitrary Hamiltonian including this one. By calculating the eigenvalues and eigenvectors of a unitary operator obtained from the free evolution plus an exchange operator, we find that the double quantum Hamiltonian spin chain will support a three-spin initial encoding that will transfer along the chain with remarkably high fidelity. The fidelity is also found to decrease very slowly with increasing chain length. In addition, we are able to explain previous results showing exceptional transfer using this method.

Ground state cooling is not possible given initial system-thermal bath factorization

In this paper we prove that a fundamental constraint on the cooling dynamic implies that it is impossible to cool, via a unitary system-bath quantum evolution, a system that is embedded in a thermal environment down to its ground state, if the initial state is a factorized product of system and bath states. The latter is a crucial but artificial assumption often included in many descriptions of system-bath dynamics. The analogous conclusion holds for 'cooling' to any pure state of the system.

Revisiting the quantum Szilard engine with fully quantum considerations

By considering level shifting during the insertion process we revisit the quantum Szilard engine (QSZE) with fully quantum consideration. We derive the general expressions of the heat absorbed from thermal bath and the total work done to the environment by the system in a cycle with two different cyclic strategies. We find that only the quantum information contributes to the absorbed heat, and the classical information acts like a feedback controller and has no direct effect on the absorbed heat. This is the first demonstration of the different effects of quantum information and classical information for extracting heat from the bath in the QSZE. Moreover, when the well width $L\rightarrow \infty $ or the temperature of the bath $T\rightarrow \infty $ the QSZE reduces to the classical Szilard engine (CSZE), and the total work satisfies the relation $W_{\mathtt{tot}}=k_{B}T \mathtt{ln}2$ as obtained by Sang Wook Kim et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 106, 070401 (2011)] for one particle case.

Exact dynamics of interacting qubits in a thermal environment: Results beyond the weak coupling limit

We demonstrate an exact mapping of a class of models of two interacting qubits in thermal reservoirs to two separate spin-bath problems. Based on this mapping, exact numerical simulations of the qubits dynamics can be performed, beyond the weak system-bath coupling limit. Given the time evolution of the system, we study, in a numerically exact way, the dynamics of entanglement between pair of qubits immersed in boson thermal baths, showing a rich phenomenology, including an intermediate oscillatory behavior, the entanglement sudden birth, sudden death, and revival. We find that stationary entanglement develops between the qubits due to their coupling to a thermal environment, unlike the isolated qubits case in which the entanglement oscillates. We also show that the occurrence of entanglement sudden death in this model depends on the portion of the zero and double excitation states in the subsystem initial state. In the long-time limit, analytic expressions are presented at weak system-bath coupling, for a range of relevant qubit parameters.

Quantum discord and its asymptotic behaviors in a time-dependent XY spin chain

We study the dynamics and the asymptotic behaviors of quantum discord in a one-dimensional XY model coupled through time-dependent nearest-neighbor interactions and in the presence of a time-dependent magnetic field. We find that the time evolution of the nearest-neighbor quantum discord in this system shows non-ergodic behaviors but is asymptotic to its steady value at the long-time limit. The zero-temperature asymptotic behaviors of quantum discord is only determined by the ratio between the coupling parameter and magnetic field, whereas the finite-temperature asymptotic behaviors determined by both of them. These asymptotic behaviors are sensitive not only to the initial values of the coupling parameter and magnetic field, but also to the final values. It is interesting to note that quantum discords are more robust than entanglement against the effect of temperature. We also find particular parameter regimes, where the nearest-neighbor quantum discord is enhanced significantly.

Fault-Tolerant Exact State Transmission

We show that a category of one-dimensional XY-type models may enable high-fidelity quantum state transmissions, regardless of details of coupling configurations. This observation leads to a fault- tolerant design of a state transmission setup. The setup is fault-tolerant, with specified thresholds, against engineering failures of coupling configurations, fabrication imperfections or defects, and even time-dependent noises. We propose the implementation of the fault-tolerant scheme using hard-core bosons in one-dimensional optical lattices.

Feshbach Projection Operator Partitioning for Quantum Open Systems: Stochastic Approach

Dynamics of a state of interest coupled to a non-Markovian environment is studied for the first time by concatenating the non-Markovian quantum state diffusion (QSD) equation and the Feshbach projection operator partitioning technique. An exact one-dimensional stochastic master equation is derived as a general tool for controlling an arbitrary component of the system. We show that the exact one-dimensional stochastic master equation can be efficiently solved beyond the widely adapted second-order master equations. The generality and applicability of this hybrid approach is justified and exemplified by several coherence control problems concerning quantum state protection against leakage and decoherence.
