Berry-phase effects in dipole density and Mott relation

We provide a unified semiclassical theory for thermoelectric responses of any observable represented by an operator $\hat{\boldsymbolθ}$ that is well-defined in periodic crystals. The Einstein and Mott relations are established generally, in the presence of Berry-phase effects, for various physical realizations of $\hat{\boldsymbolθ}$ in electronic systems, including the familiar case of the electric current as well as the currently controversial cases of the spin polarization and spin current. The magnetization current, which has been proven indispensable in the thermoelectric response of electric current, is generalized to the cases of various $\hat{\boldsymbolθ}$. In our theory the dipole density of a physical quantity emerges and plays a vital role, which contains not only the statistical sum of the dipole moment of $\hat{\boldsymbolθ}$ but also a Berry-phase correction.

Geometrodynamics of electrons in a crystal under position and time dependent deformation

Semiclassical dynamics of Bloch electrons in a crystal under slowly varying deformation is developed in the geometric language of a lattice bundle. Berry curvatures and gradients of energy are introduced in terms of lattice covariant derivatives, with the corresponding connections given by the gradient and rate of strain. A number of physical effects are discussed: an effective post-Newtonian gravity at band bottom, polarization induced by spatial gradient of strain, orbital magnetization induced by strain rate, and electron energy stress tensor.

Secure Location-Aided Routing Protocols With Wi-Fi Direct For Vehicular Ad Hoc Networks

Secure routing protocols are proposed for the vehicular ad hoc networks. The protocols integrate the security authentication process with the Location-Aided Routing (LAR) protocol to support Wi-Fi Direct communications between the vehicles. The methods are robust against various security threats. The security authentication process adopts a modified Diffie-Hellman key agreement protocol. The Diffie-Hellman protocol is used with a short authentication string (SAS)-based key agreement over Wi-Fi Direct out-of-band communication channels. It protects the communication from any man-in-the-middle security threats. In particular, the security process is integrated into two LAR routing schemes, i.e., the request-zone LAR scheme and the distance-based LAR scheme. We conduct extensive simulations with different network parameters such as the vehicular node density, the number of the malicious nodes, and the speed of the nodes. Simulation results show that the proposed routing protocols provide superior performance in secure data delivery and average total packet delay. Also, the secure distance-based LAR protocol outperforms the secure request-zone LAR protocol.

Energy Efficiency in Multiuser Transmission Over Parallel Frequency Channels

Energy efficiency is an important design criterion for wireless communications. When parallel frequency channels are used for multiuser transmission, the channel bandwidths and user power are adjusted to maximize the sum information rate with the bandwidth budget, the transmit power budget, and the user-specific rate requirements. The maximum sum rate is used in measuring the energy efficiency. With fixed or flexible bandwidths of the frequency channels, practical methods are developed to find the total transmit power with the unique optimal resource (bandwidth and power) allocation for maximum energy efficiency. This resource allocation ensures that, while each user's minimum rate requirement is satisfied, all the excess resource of the spectrum and transmit power is dedicated to the one user with the best channel quality. Simulation results validate the optimal solutions of total transmit power and resource allocation that support the energy-efficient multiuser transmission.

Artificial gravity field, astrophysical analogues, and topological phase transitions in strained topological semimetals

Effective gravity and gauge fields are emergent properties intrinsic for low-energy quasiparticles in topological semimetals. Here, taking two Dirac semimetals as examples, we demonstrate that applied lattice strain can generate warped spacetime, with fascinating analogues in astrophysics. Particularly, we study the possibility of simulating black-hole/white-hole event horizons and gravitational lensing effect. Furthermore, we discover strain-induced topological phase transitions, both in the bulk materials and in their thin films. Especially in thin films, the transition between the quantum spin Hall and the trivial insulating phases can be achieved by a small strain, naturally leading to the proposition of a novel piezo-topological transistor device. Possible experimental realizations and analogue of Hawking radiation effect are discussed. Our result bridges multiple disciplines, revealing topological semimetals as a unique table-top platform for exploring interesting phenomena in astrophysics and general relativity; it also suggests realistic materials and methods to achieve controlled topological phase transitions with great potential for device applications.

Janus Monolayer Transition Metal Dichalcogenides

A novel crystal configuration of sandwiched S-Mo-Se structure (Janus SMoSe) at the monolayer limit has been synthesized and carefully characterized in this work. By controlled sulfurization of monolayer MoSe2 the top layer of selenium atoms are substituted by sulfur atoms while the bottom selenium layer remains intact. The peculiar structure of this new material is systematically investigated by Raman, photoluminescence and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and confirmed by transmission-electron microscopy and time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry. Density-functional theory calculations are performed to better understand the Raman vibration modes and electronic structures of the Janus SMoSe monolayer, which are found to correlate well with corresponding experimental results. Finally, high basal plane hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) activity is discovered for the Janus monolayer and DFT calculation implies that the activity originates from the synergistic effect of the intrinsic defects and structural strain inherent in the Janus structure.

Transmission Game in MIMO Interference Channels With Radio-Frequency Energy Harvesting

For multi-user transmissions over MIMO interference channels, each user designs the transmit covariance matrix to maximize its information rate. When passive radio-frequency (RF) energy harvesters are present in the network, the transmissions are constrained by both the transmit power limits and the energy harvesting requirements. A passive RF energy harvester collects the radiated energy from nearby wireless information transmitters instead of using a dedicated wireless power source. It needs multiple transmitters to concentrate their RF radiation on it because typical electric field strengths are weak. In this paper, strategic games are proposed for the multi-user transmissions. First, in a non-cooperative game, each transmitter has a best-response strategy for the transmit covariance matrix that follows a multi-level water-filling solution. A pure-strategy Nash equilibrium exists. Secondly, in a cooperative game, there is no need to estimate the proportion of the harvested energy from each transmitter. Rather, the transmitters bargain over the unit-reward of the energy contribution. An approximation of the information rate is used in constructing the individual utility such that the problem of network utility maximization can be decomposed and the bargaining process can be implemented distributively. The bargaining solution gives a point of rates that is superior to the Nash equilibria and close to the Pareto front. Simulation results verify the algorithms that provide good communication performance while satisfying the RF energy-harvesting requirements.

Clarifying Trust in Social Internet of Things

A social approach can be exploited for the Internet of Things (IoT) to manage a large number of connected objects. These objects operate as autonomous agents to request and provide information and services to users. Establishing trustworthy relationships among the objects greatly improves the effectiveness of node interaction in the social IoT and helps nodes overcome perceptions of uncertainty and risk. However, there are limitations in the existing trust models. In this paper, a comprehensive model of trust is proposed that is tailored to the social IoT. The model includes ingredients such as trustor, trustee, goal, trustworthiness evaluation, decision, action, result, and context. Building on this trust model, we clarify the concept of trust in the social IoT in five aspects such as (1) mutuality of trustor and trustee, (2) inferential transfer of trust, (3) transitivity of trust, (4) trustworthiness update, and (5) trustworthiness affected by dynamic environment. With network connectivities that are from real-world social networks, a series of simulations are conducted to evaluate the performance of the social IoT operated with the proposed trust model. An experimental IoT network is used to further validate the proposed trust model.

The Apps You Use Bring The Blogs to Follow

We tackle the blog recommendation problem in Tumblr for mobile users in this paper. Blog recommendation is challenging since most mobile users would suffer from the cold start when there are only a limited number of blogs followed by the user. Specifically to address this problem in the mobile domain, we take into account mobile apps, which typically provide rich information from the users. Based on the assumption that the user interests can be reflected from their app usage patterns, we propose to exploit the app usage data for improving blog recommendation. Building on the state-of-the-art recommendation framework, Factorization Machines (FM), we implement app-based FM that integrates app usage data with the user-blog follow relations. In this approach the blog recommendation is generated not only based on the blogs that the user followed before, but also the apps that the user has often used. We demonstrate in a series of experiments that app-based FM can outperform other alternative approaches to a significant extent. Our experimental results also show that exploiting app usage information is particularly effective for improving blog recommendation quality for cold start users.

G-Bean: an ontology-graph based web tool for biomedical literature retrieval

Currently, most people use PubMed to search the MEDLINE database, an important bibliographical information source for life science and biomedical information. However, PubMed has some drawbacks that make it difficult to find relevant publications pertaining to users' individual intentions, especially for non-expert users. To ameliorate the disadvantages of PubMed, we developed G-Bean, a graph based biomedical search engine, to search biomedical articles in MEDLINE database more efficiently.G-Bean addresses PubMed's limitations with three innovations: parallel document index creation,ontology-graph based query expansion, and retrieval and re-ranking of documents based on user's search intention.Performance evaluation with 106 OHSUMED benchmark queries shows that G-Bean returns more relevant results than PubMed does when using these queries to search the MEDLINE database. PubMed could not even return any search result for some OHSUMED queries because it failed to form the appropriate Boolean query statement automatically from the natural language query strings. G-Bean is available at http://bioinformatics.clemson.edu/G-Bean/index.php.G-Bean addresses PubMed's limitations with ontology-graph based query expansion, automatic document indexing, and user search intention discovery. It shows significant advantages in finding relevant articles from the MEDLINE database to meet the information need of the user.

Ultra-Broadband Coherent Supercontinuum Frequency Comb

We present detailed studies of the coherence properties of an ultra-broadband super-continuum, enabled by a new approach involving continuous wave laser sources to independently probe both the amplitude and phase noise quadratures across the entire spectrum. The continuum coherently spans more than 1.5 octaves, supporting Hz-level comparison of ultrastable lasers at 698 nm and 1.54 μm. We present the first numerical simulation of the accumulated comb coherence in the limit of many pulses, in contrast to the single-pulse level, with systematic experimental verification. The experiment and numerical simulations reveal the presence of quantum-seeded broadband amplitude noise without phase coherence degradation, including the discovery of a dependence of the super-continuum coherence on the fiber fractional Raman gain.
