Spin-dependent gain and loss in photonic quantum spin Hall systems

Topological phases are greatly enriched by including non-Hermiticity. While most works focus on the topology of the eigenvalues and eigenstates, how topologically nontrivial non-Hermitian systems behave in dynamics has only drawn limited attention. Here, we consider a breathing honeycomb lattice known to emulate the quantum spin Hall effect and exhibits higher-order corner modes. We find that non-reciprocal intracell couplings introduce gain in one pseudo-spin subspace while loss with the same magnitude in the other. In addition, non-reciprocal intracell couplings can also suppress the spin mixture of the edge modes at the boundaries and delocalize the higher-order corner mode. Our findings deepen the understanding of non-Hermitian topological phases and bring in the spin degree of freedom in manipulating the dynamics in non-Hermitian systems.

High-responsivity MoS$_2$ hot-electron telecom-band photodetector integrated with microring resonator

We report a high-responsive hot-electron photodetector based on the integration of an Au-MoS$_2$ junction with a silicon nitride microring resonator (MRR) for detecting telecom-band light. The coupling of the evanescent field of the silicon nitride MRR with the Au-MoS$_2$ Schottky junction region enhances the hot-electron injection efficiency. The device exhibits a high responsivity of 154.6 mA W-1 at the wavelength of 1516 nm, and the moderately uniform responsivities are obtained over the wavelength range of 1500 nm-1630 nm. This MRR-enhanced MoS2 hot-electron photodetector offers possibilities for integrated optoelectronic systems.

CHES: a space-borne astrometric mission for the detection of habitable planets of the nearby solar-type stars

The Closeby Habitable Exoplanet Survey (CHES) mission is proposed to discover habitable-zone Earth-like planets of the nearby solar-type stars ($\sim 10~\mathrm{pc}$ away from our solar system) via micro-arcsecond relative astrometry. The major scientific objectives of CHES are: to search for Earth Twins or terrestrial planets in habitable zones orbiting 100 FGK nearby stars; further to conduct a comprehensive survey and extensively characterize the nearby planetary systems. The primary payload is a high-quality, low-distortion, high-stability telescope. The optical subsystem is a coaxial three-mirror anastigmat (TMA) with a $1.2 \mathrm{~m}$-aperture, $0.44^{\circ} \times 0.44^{\circ}$ field of view and $500 \mathrm{~nm}-900 \mathrm{~nm}$ working waveband. The camera focal plane is composed of 81 MOSAIC scientific CMOS detectors each with $4 \mathrm{~K} \times 4 \mathrm{~K}$ pixels. The heterodyne laser interferometric calibration technology is employed to ensure micro-arcsecond level (1 $μ$as) relative astrometry precision to meet the requirements for detection of Earth-like planets. CHES satellite operates at the Sun-Earth L2 point and observes the entire target stars for 5 years. CHES will offer the first direct measurements of true masses and inclinations of Earth Twins and super-Earths orbiting our neighbor stars based on micro-arcsecond astrometry from space. This will definitely enhance our understanding of the formation of diverse nearby planetary systems and the emergence of other worlds for solar-type stars, and finally to reflect the evolution of our own solar system.

High-efficiency second-harmonic and sum-frequency generation in a silicon nitride microring integrated with few-layer GaSe

Silicon nitride (SiN) photonics platform has attributes of ultra-low linear and nonlinear propagation losses and CMOS-compatible fabrication process, promising large-scale multifunctional photonic circuits. However, the centrosymmetric nature of SiN inhibits second-order nonlinear optical responses in its photonics platform, which is desirable for developing efficient nonlinear active devices. Here, we demonstrate high-efficiency second-order nonlinear processes in SiN photonics platform by integrating a few-layer GaSe flake on a SiN microring resonator. With the pump of microwatts continuous-wave lasers, second-harmonic generation and sum-frequency generation with the conversion efficiencies of 849%/W and 123%/W, respectively, are achieved, which benefit from the ultrahigh second-order nonlinear susceptibility of GaSe, resonance enhanced GaSe-light interaction, and phase-matching condition satisfied by the mode engineering. Combining with the easy integration, the GaSe-assisted high-efficiency second-order nonlinear processes offer a new route to enriching already strong functionality of SiN photonics platform in nonlinear optics.

Exciting Magnetic Dipole Mode of Split Ring Plasmonic Nano Resonator by Photonic Crystal Nanocavity

On chip exciting electric modes in individual plasmonic nanostructures are realized widely; nevertheless, the excitation of their magnetic counterparts is seldom reported. Here, we propose a highly efficient on chip excitation approach of the magnetic dipole mode of an individual split ring resonator (SRR) by integrating it onto a photonic crystal nanocavity (PCNC). A high excitation efficiency of up to 58% is realized through the resonant coupling between the modes of the SRR and PCNC. A further fine adjustment of the excited magnetic dipole mode is demonstrated by tuning the relative position and twist angle between the SRR and PCNC. Finally, a structure with a photonic crystal waveguide side coupled with the hybrid SRR PCNC is illustrated, which could excite the magnetic dipole mode with an in plane coupling geometry and potentially facilitate the future device application. Our result may open a way for developing chip integrated photonic devices employing a magnetic field component in the optical field.

Dynamic behavior of polar nanoregions in re-entrant relaxor 0.6Bi(Mg1/2Ti1/2)O3-0.4PbTiO3

The existence of polar nanoregions is the most important characteristic of ferroelectric relaxors, however, the size determination and dynamic of PNRs remains uncertain. We reveal a re-entrant relaxor behavior and ferroelectric-paraelectric transition coexists in complex perovskite oxide 0.6Bi(Mg1/2Ti1/2)O3-0.4PbTiO3. Two dielectric anomalies (i) the low-temperature re-entrant relaxor transition and (ii) the high-temperature diffuse phase transition (DPT) were described by the phenomenological statistical model. The sizes of the two kinds of polar nanoregions (PNRs) corresponding to two ferroelectric states were obtained. The dynamic of PNRs were analyzed using isothermal electrical modulus, which shows three critical temperatures associated with the diffuse phase transition, the formation and freezing of PNRs, respectively. The temperature evolution of the PNRs evolution depends on the stoichiometry of bismuth. The results provide new insights into the dynamic behavior of PNRs and the modification way of re-entrant relaxor behavior.

Fano resonance from a one-dimensional topological photonic crystal

An ultra-compact one-dimensional topological photonic crystal (1D-TPC) is designed in a single mode silicon bus-waveguide to generate Fano resonance lineshape. The Fano resonance comes from the interference between the discrete topological boundary state of the 1D-TPC and the continuum high-order leaky mode of the bus-waveguide. Standalone asymmetric Fano resonance lineshapes are obtained experimentally in the waveguide transmission spectrum with a maximum extinction ratio of 33 dB and a slope ratio of 10 dB/nm over a broadband flat background.

Giant Enhancement of Nonlinear Harmonic Generation in a Silicon Topological Photonic Crystal Nanocavity Chain

Strongly enhanced third-harmonic generation (THG) by the topological localization of an edge mode in a Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) chain of silicon photonic crystal nanocavities is demonstrated. The edge mode of the nanocavity chain not only naturally inherits resonant properties of the single nanocavity, but also exhibits the topological feature with mode robustness extending well beyond individual nanocavity. By engineering the SSH nanocavities with alternating strong and weak coupling strengths on a silicon slab, we observe the edge mode formation that entails a THG signal with three orders of magnitude enhancement compared with that in a trivial SSH structure. Our results indicate that the photonic crystal nanocavity chain could provide a promising on-chip platform for topology-driven nonlinear photonics.

A topologically protected ring-resonator formed in valley photonic crystals is proposed and fabricated on a silicon slab. The unidirectional transmission and robustness against structure defects of its resonant modes are illustrated. Coupled with topological waveguides, the topological ring is functioned as notch and channel-drop filters. The work opens up a new avenue for developing advanced chip-integrated photonic circuits with attributes of topological photonics.

Adaptive L2 Regularization in Person Re-Identification

We introduce an adaptive L2 regularization mechanism in the setting of person re-identification. In the literature, it is common practice to utilize hand-picked regularization factors which remain constant throughout the training procedure. Unlike existing approaches, the regularization factors in our proposed method are updated adaptively through backpropagation. This is achieved by incorporating trainable scalar variables as the regularization factors, which are further fed into a scaled hard sigmoid function. Extensive experiments on the Market-1501, DukeMTMC-reID and MSMT17 datasets validate the effectiveness of our framework. Most notably, we obtain state-of-the-art performance on MSMT17, which is the largest dataset for person re-identification. Source code is publicly available at https://github.com/nixingyang/AdaptiveL2Regularization.

Structured light interferometry

Optical interferometry has made tremendous development in fundamentals and applications of light. Traditional optical interferometry using simplex plane phase light just allows one dimensional measurement, but incapable of retrieving multidimensional movement. Here, we present new structured light interferometry to achieve simultaneous determination of rotational and translational dimensionalities (magnitudes and directions) of moving objects by fully exploiting multiple degree of freedoms of structured light. Such multidimensional detectability benefits from multiple amplitude and sign distinguishable Doppler shifts of structured light by analyzing relative amplitude and phase information of Doppler signals. We experimentally demonstrate two interferometric schemes to individually retrieve both translational and rotational velocity vectors of two kinds of moving objects (small particles and bulk targets). These interferometric schemes based on structured light show remarkable function enhancement for simultaneous measurement of multidimensional motion vectors, compared with traditional interferometry, and thus may expand optical interferometry to multidimensional metrology in remote sensing, intelligent manufacturing and engineering.

A vectorial Doppler effect with spatially variant polarized light fields

The Doppler effect of light was implemented by interference with a reference wave to infer linear velocities in early manifestations, and more recently lateral and angular velocities with scalar phase structured light. A consequence of the scalar wave approach is that it is impossible to deduce the motion direction and position of moving targets directly. Here we overcome this limitation with vectorially structured light, exhibiting spatially variant polarization, allowing both the position and velocity of a particle to be robustly determined by a new vectorial Doppler effect. We use this to successfully implement real time monitoring of instantaneous angular position and velocity of a complicated moving particle, and interpret its physical mechanism as evidence of time reversal symmetry breaking in classically entangled light fields. Our demonstration can easily be extended with arbitrary vector structured fields for complete motion tracking of nontrivial trajectories, offering new vectorial Doppler metrology for universal motion vectors.

Sharing a common origin between the rotational and linear Doppler effects

The well-known linear Doppler effect arises from the linear motion between source and observer, while the less well-known rotational Doppler effect arises from the rotational motion. Here, we present both theories and experiments illustrating the relationship between the rotational and linear Doppler effects. A spiral phaseplate is used to generate a light beam carrying orbital angular momentum and the frequency shift is measured arising from its rotational and/or linear motion. By considering either the motion-induced time-evolving phase or the momentum and energy conservation in light-matter interactions, we derive the rotational Doppler shift, linear Doppler shift, and overall Doppler shift associated with rotational and linear motions. We demonstrate the relationship between rotational and linear Doppler shifts, either of which can be derived from the other effect, thereby illustrating their shared origin. Moreover, the close relationship between rotational and linear Doppler effects is also deduced for a more general moving rough surface.

Intrinsic transverse spin angular momentum of fiber eigenmodes

We study the transverse spin angular momentum of fiber eigenmodes. As an intrinsic property of fiber eigenmodes, it becomes considerable in optical nanofibers and, especially, increases sharply in the evanescent field. We derive analytical expressions of this angular momentum, and present its density distribution inside andoutside nanofibers. Significantly, we find the optimal ratio of the fiber core radius to the wavelength to obtain the maximum surface transverse spin. For instance, the optimal fiber radius is one fourth of the wavelength for the fundamental mode. Furthermore, we investigate the spin flow of each guided mode on the nanofiber surface and the transverse mechanical effects originated from the transverse spin on small particles.

Mode conversion and orbital angular momentum transfer among multiple modes by helical gratings

The coupling feature of helical gratings (HGs) has been studied on flexible conversion between two orbital angular momentum (OAM) modes by both the transverse and longitudinal modulation of HGs. Apart from one to one OAM exchange, HGs can achieve OAM transfer among multiple modes, provided both the helix and phase matching conditions are well satisfied for successive coupling. It is contributed from the fold number of modulation fringes of HGs and the difference multiplication of propagation constants between two of the successive modes. Based on the coupled mode theory, we investigate the mode conversion and OAM transfer among three modes using a 3 fold HGs in a ring core fiber, and numerically simulate it by transmission matrix. Our work about the multiple modes transferring can be regarded as an extension of mode coupling for optical gratings, and might flourish the mode conversion, as well as OAM manipulation in optics fields.

Full-Vectorial Mode Coupling in Optical Fibers

Optical full vectorial modes have closely attracted much attention because of their unique optical features and thus may develop the fundamental researches and new functionalities of light. Beyond the conventional linear polarization modal coupling, we thoroughly investigate the inherent polarizationdependence and polarization-isolation features for full vectorial mode coupling in optical fibers, as well as the coupling crosstalk in view of the modal degeneracy. We present the general full vectorial coupling mechanism and numerically simulate the full vectorial mode coupling for both fiber directional and grating assisted coupling cases. Furthermore, we give the detailed analyses of coupling crosstalk based on the unified threemode coupling model. Apart from lifting the modal degeneracy, significantly, the crosstalk can also be reduced by weakening the coupling coefficient and meanwhile increasing the coupling length. This extended full vectorial mode coupling mechanismmay provide theoretical guidance on exploiting new all fiberbased polarization-sensitive passive elements to control fullvectorial fields and modal polarization states.

Optical angular momentum derivation and evolution from vectorial field superposition

Optical intrinsic angular momentum can be regarded as derivation from spatial superposition of optical vector fields embodied by spinning or and spiraling the electric field vector. We employ vectorial formulation derivation to comprehensively study all angular momentum contents of optical vector fields in arbitrary superposition states, including the longitudinal and transverse, spin and orbital (SAM and OAM) components. As for the orthogonal superposition fields, there inherently exists spin-orbit shift from longitudinal SAM to OAM, and the whole local spin flow manifests local multiple fold helical trajectories. Especially, both the spin-orbit shift and transverse SAM could become considerable in the non-paraxial condition. Our studies here provide an explicit insight into the derivation and evolution, intrinsic correlations and salient features of various types of angular momentum components.
