Master integrals for mixed QCD-QED corrections to charged-current Drell-Yan production of a massive charged lepton

The master integrals for the mixed QCD-QED two-loop virtual corrections to the charged-current Drell-Yan process $q\bar{q}^{\prime} \rightarrow \ell ν$ are computed analytically by using the differential equation method. A suitable choice of master integrals makes it successful to cast the differential equation system into the canonical form. We keep the dependence on charged lepton mass in the building of differential equations and then expand the system against the ratio of small charged lepton mass to large $W$-boson mass. In such a way the final results will contain large logarithms of the form $\log(m_{\ell}^2/m_W^2)$. Finally, all the canonical master integrals are given as Taylor series around $d = 4$ spacetime dimensions up to order four, with coefficients expressed in terms of Goncharov polylogarithms up to weight four.

Indoor Localization for Quadrotors using Invisible Projected Tags

Augmented reality (AR) technology has been introduced into the robotics field to narrow the visual gap between indoor and outdoor environments. However, without signals from satellite navigation systems, flight experiments in these indoor AR scenarios need other accurate localization approaches. This work proposes a real-time centimeter-level indoor localization method based on psycho-visually invisible projected tags (IPT), requiring a projector as the sender and quadrotors with high-speed cameras as the receiver. The method includes a modulation process for the sender, as well as demodulation and pose estimation steps for the receiver, where screen-camera communication technology is applied to hide fiducial tags using human vision property. Experiments have demonstrated that IPT can achieve accuracy within ten centimeters and a speed of about ten FPS. Compared with other localization methods for AR robotics platforms, IPT is affordable by using only a projector and high-speed cameras as hardware consumption and convenient by omitting a coordinate alignment step. To the authors' best knowledge, this is the first time screen-camera communication is utilized for AR robot localization.

Two-loop master integrals for the single top production associated with $W$ boson

The $tW$ associated production has the second-largest cross section among three single top production channels. A complete study of NNLO QCD corrections to $tW$ production is still missing in literature. We present the calculation of part of the requisite two-loop master integrals for the process $b+g \to t+W$ at NNLO QCD. It turns out that the 80 master integrals in two families, involving up to three massive internal lines, can be expressed by Goncharov polylogarithms. The canonical differential equations that these integrals obey contain at most three square roots. By separating the canonical master integrals into groups according to their dependences on roots, we succeed in achieving optimization of final expressions, which are validated by independent numerical checks.

Reduction of the electroweak correlation in the PDF updating by using the forward-backward asymmetry of Drell-Yan process

We propose a new observable for the measurement of the forward-backward asymmetry $(A_{FB})$ in Drell-Yan lepton production. At hadron colliders, the $A_{FB}$ distribution is sensitive to both the electroweak (EW) fundamental parameter $\sin^2 θ_{W}$, the weak mixing angle, and the parton distribution functions (PDFs). Hence, the determination of $\sin^2 θ_{W}$ and the updating of PDFs by directly using the same $A_{FB}$ spectrum are strongly correlated. This correlation would introduce large bias or uncertainty into both precise measurements of EW and PDF sectors. In this article, we show that the sensitivity of $A_{FB}$ on $\sin^2 θ_{W}$ is dominated by its average value around the $Z$ pole region, while the shape (or gradient) of the $A_{FB}$ spectrum is insensitive to $\sin^2 θ_{W}$ and contains important information on the PDF modeling. Accordingly, a new observable related to the gradient of the spectrum is introduced, and demonstrated to be able to significantly reduce the potential bias on the determination of $\sin^2 θ_{W}$ when updating the PDFs using the same $A_{FB}$ data.

Price Suggestion for Online Second-hand Items with Texts and Images

This paper presents an intelligent price suggestion system for online second-hand listings based on their uploaded images and text descriptions. The goal of price prediction is to help sellers set effective and reasonable prices for their second-hand items with the images and text descriptions uploaded to the online platforms. Specifically, we design a multi-modal price suggestion system which takes as input the extracted visual and textual features along with some statistical item features collected from the second-hand item shopping platform to determine whether the image and text of an uploaded second-hand item are qualified for reasonable price suggestion with a binary classification model, and provide price suggestions for second-hand items with qualified images and text descriptions with a regression model. To satisfy different demands, two different constraints are added into the joint training of the classification model and the regression model. Moreover, a customized loss function is designed for optimizing the regression model to provide price suggestions for second-hand items, which can not only maximize the gain of the sellers but also facilitate the online transaction. We also derive a set of metrics to better evaluate the proposed price suggestion system. Extensive experiments on a large real-world dataset demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed multi-modal price suggestion system.

Vision-based Price Suggestion for Online Second-hand Items

Different from shopping in physical stores, where people have the opportunity to closely check a product (e.g., touching the surface of a T-shirt or smelling the scent of perfume) before making a purchase decision, online shoppers rely greatly on the uploaded product images to make any purchase decision. The decision-making is challenging when selling or purchasing second-hand items online since estimating the items' prices is not trivial. In this work, we present a vision-based price suggestion system for the online second-hand item shopping platform. The goal of vision-based price suggestion is to help sellers set effective prices for their second-hand listings with the images uploaded to the online platforms. First, we propose to better extract representative visual features from the images with the aid of some other image-based item information (e.g., category, brand). Then, we design a vision-based price suggestion module which takes the extracted visual features along with some statistical item features from the shopping platform as the inputs to determine whether an uploaded item image is qualified for price suggestion by a binary classification model, and provide price suggestions for items with qualified images by a regression model. According to two demands from the platform, two different objective functions are proposed to jointly optimize the classification model and the regression model. For better model training, we also propose a warm-up training strategy for the joint optimization. Extensive experiments on a large real-world dataset demonstrate the effectiveness of our vision-based price prediction system.

Reduction of PDF uncertainty in the measurement of the weak mixing angle at the ATLAS experiment

We investigate the parton distribution function (PDF) uncertainty in the measurement of the effective weak mixing angle $\sin^2θ_{\text{eff}}^{\ell}$ at the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC). The PDF-induced uncertainty is large in the proton-proton collisions at the LHC due to the dilution effect. The measurement of the Drell-Yan forward-backward asymmetry ($A_{FB}$) at the LHC can be used to reduce the PDF uncertainty in the $\sin^2θ_{\text{eff}}^{\ell}$ measurement. However, when including the full mass range of lepton pairs in the $A_{FB}$ data analysis, the correlation between the PDF updating procedure and the $\sin^2θ_{\text{eff}}^{\ell}$ extraction leads to a sizable bias in the obtained $\sin^2θ_{\text{eff}}^{\ell}$ value. From our studies, we find that the bias can be significantly reduced by removing Drell-Yan events with invariant mass around the $Z$ pole region, while most of the sensitivity in reducing the PDF uncertainty remains. Furthermore, the lepton charge asymmetry in the $W$ boson events as a function of the rapidity of the charged leptons, $A_\pm(η_\ell)$, is known to be another observable which can be used to reduce the PDF uncertainty in the $\sin^2θ_{\text{eff}}^{\ell}$ measurement. The constraint from $A_\pm(η_\ell)$ is complementary to that from the $A_{FB}$, thus no bias affects the $\sin^2θ_{\text{eff}}^{\ell}$ extraction. The studies are performed using the Error PDF Updating Method Package ({\sc ePump}), which is based on the Hessian updating methods. In this article, the CT14HERA2 PDF set is used as an example.

A novel method for lepton energy calibration at Hadron Collider Experiments

This report is to provide a novel method for the lepton energy calibration at Hadron Collider Experiments. The method improves the classic lepton energy calibration procedure widely used at hadron collider experiments. The classic method parameterizes the potential bias in the lepton en- ergy calibration, and determines the value of the parameter by the invariant mass of $Z/γ^*\rightarrow \ell^+\ell^-$ events. The precision of the calibration is dominated by the number of parameters or terms consid- ered in the parameterization, for example, a polynomial extension. With one physics constraint of the reconstructed Z boson mass, the classic procedure can use and determine one parameter. The novel method improves the precision of lepton calibration by introducing more terms in the parameterization. To precisely determine the values of multiple parameters, the method first ac- quires more constraints by separating the $Z/γ^*\rightarrow \ell^+\ell^-$ samples according to the decay kinematics, and then reduces the correlation between multiple parameters. Since the new method is still using the reconstructed Z boson masses as the only constraints, it is much faster and easier than detailed study of detector simulations.

Adding high time resolution to charge-state-specific ion energy measurements for pulsed copper vacuum arc plasmas

Charge-state-resolved ion energy-time-distributions of pulsed Cu arc plasma were obtained by using direct (time dependent) acquisition of the ion detection signal from a commercial ion mass-per-charge and energy-per-charge analyzer. We find a shift of energies of Cu2+, Cu3+ and Cu4+ ions to lower values during the first few hundred microseconds after arc ignition, which is evidence for particle collisions in the plasma. The generation of Cu1+ ions in the later part of the pulse, measured by the increase of Cu1+ signal intensity and an associated slight reduction of the mean charge state point to charge exchange reactions between ions and neutrals. At the very beginning of the pulse, when the plasma expands into vacuum and the plasma potential strongly fluctuates, ions with much higher energy (over 200 eV) were observed. Early in the pulse, the ion energies observed are approximately proportional to the ion charge state, and we conclude that the acceleration mechanism is primarily based on acceleration in an electric field. This field is directed away from the cathode, indicative for a potential hump. Measurements by a floating probe suggest that potential structures travel and ions moving in the traveling field can gain high energies up to a few hundred electron-volt. Later in the pulse, the approximate proportionality is lost, which is either related to increased smearing out of different energies due to collisions with neutrals, and/or a change of the acceleration character from electrostatic to "gas-dynamic", i.e., dominated by pressure gradient.

Identifying the orbital angular momentum of light based on atomic ensembles

We propose a scheme to distinguish the orbital angular momentum state of the Laguerre-Gaussian (LG) beam based on the electromagnetically induced transparency modulated by a microwave field in atomic ensembles. We show that the transverse phase variation of a probe beam with the LG mode can be mapped into the spatial intensity distribution due to the change of atomic coherence caused by the microwave. The proposal may provide a useful tool for studying higher-dimensional quantum information based on atomic ensembles.

Spin polarization separation of reflected light at Brewster angle

A novel spin polarization separation of reflected light is observed, when a linearly polarized Gaussian beam impinges on an air-glass interface at Brewster angle. In the far-field zone, spins of photons are oppositely polarized in two regions along the direction perpendicular to incident plane. Spatial scale of this polarization is related to optical properties of dielectric and can be controlled by experimental configuration. We believe that this study benefits the manipulation of spins of photons and the development of methods for investigating optical properties of materials.

Seesaw Type I and III at the LHeC

We study the potential of testing the seesaw type I and III models at the LHeC, an e-p collision mode at the CERN collider. The e-p collision mode provides an excellent place to study lepton number violating process e^- p \to N j + X \to l^+ W^- j + X with W^- into hadron jets. Here N is a heavy Majorana neutrino and j is a hard hadron jet. With the electron energy E_e = 140 GeV and proton energy E_p = 7 TeV, we find that the cross section for the heavy neutrino N production can be as large as a few fb for the mass scale as high as 1 TeV, higher than what can be achieved by the p-p collision mode of LHC with the same related heavy neutrino couplings.

The entanglement of damped noon-state and its performance in phase measurement

The state evolution of the initial optical \textit{noon} state is investigated. The residue entanglement of the state is calculated after it is damped by amplitude and phase damping. The relative entropy of entanglement of the damped state is exactly obtained. The performance of direct application of the damped \textit{noon} state is compared with that of firstly distilling the docoherence damped state then applying it in measurement.

Charged Higgs boson pair production via gluon-gluon collisions in MSSM with CP violation

The CP-violating effects to the subprocess $gg\to H^+H^-$ is studied in the mSUGRA scenario at the CERN LHC, by taking into account the experimental bounds of electron and neutron EDM's. The CP violation effects in this process are related to the complex phases of $μ$ and $A_{f}$ in the mSUGRA scenario. In our calculation we consider small CP phases of $μ$ and $A_{f}$ and neglect the effects of neutral Higgs bosons mixing. In this case the CP effects to the process mainly come from the complex couplings of Higgs-squark-squark. We find a strong dependence of charged Higgs boson pair production rate on the complex couplings in the MSSM parameter space.

Probing flavor changing interactions in hadron collisions

The subprocess $gg \to t\bar{c}+\bar{t}c$ in the two-Higgs-doublet model with flavor-changing scalar couplings is examined at the one loop level. With perturbative QCD factorization theorem, the corresponding cross sections for hadron-hadron collisions are computed numerically. The results are applicable to the whole mass range of the weakly coupled Higgs bosons. In case we could efficiently exclude the severe backgrounds of the $t\bar{c}(\bar{t}c)$ production signal, probing the flavor-changing top-charm-scalar vertex at hadron colliders would be very promising and accessible experimentally.

The QCD corrections to scalar top pair production in photon-photon collisions

The complete QCD corrections to the scalar top quark pair production via $γγ$ fusion in parent $e^{+}e^{-}$ collider are calculated in the Supersymmetric Model. The various origins of corrections are discussed. We find that the correction due to gluino exchange is smaller than that due to conventional gluonic contribution, and the contribution due to squark quartic interactions is much smaller. Moreover, the dependences of the corrections on the masses and the mixing angle of the supersymmetric particles are also investigated.
