Consistent Warped $\mathbb R\times T^{1,1}$ Reduction of Heterotic Supergravity

We find a curious duality between the bosonic sector of heterotic supergravity and the noncritical bosonic string with conformal anomaly. This allows us to map the Mink$_4\times S^3\times S^3$ vacuum of the bosonic string to a new warped $\mathbb R\times (T^{1,1}\times$Mink$_4)$ vacuum of the heterotic theory, which turns out to be supersymmetric, preserving $1/4$ of the supersymmetry. We perform consistent dimensional reduction of the heterotic theory on the warped $\mathbb R\times T^{1,1}$ internal space and obtain ${\cal N}=1$, $D=4$ supergravity, with one complex scalar multiplet and $SU(2)\times SU(2)$ Yang-Mills multiplets, where the gauge symmetry is originated from the isometry group of $T^{1,1}$.

EACO: Enhancing Alignment in Multimodal LLMs via Critical Observation

Multimodal large language models (MLLMs) have achieved remarkable progress on various visual question answering and reasoning tasks leveraging instruction fine-tuning specific datasets. They can also learn from preference data annotated by human to enhance their reasoning ability and mitigate hallucinations. Most of preference data is generated from the model itself. However, existing methods require high-quality critical labels, which are costly and rely on human or proprietary models like GPT-4V. In this work, we propose Enhancing Alignment in MLLMs via Critical Observation (EACO), which aligns MLLMs by self-generated preference data using only 5k images economically. Our approach begins with collecting and refining a Scoring Evaluation Instruction-tuning dataset to train a critical evaluation model, termed the Critic. This Critic observes model responses across multiple dimensions, selecting preferred and non-preferred outputs for refined Direct Preference Optimization (DPO) tuning. To further enhance model performance, we employ an additional supervised fine-tuning stage after preference tuning. EACO reduces the overall hallucinations by 65.6% on HallusionBench and improves the reasoning ability by 21.8% on MME-Cognition. EACO achieves an 8.5% improvement over LLaVA-v1.6-Mistral-7B across multiple benchmarks. Remarkably, EACO also shows the potential critical ability in open-source MLLMs, demonstrating that EACO is a viable path to boost the competence of MLLMs.

Charging the Love numbers: Charged scalar response coefficients of Kerr-Newman black holes

We study the electrically-charged massless scalar response to the general Kerr-Newman black hole and obtain the exact (complex) response coefficients, whose real parts are the Love numbers. We find there is a curious discontinuity between the neutral and charged scalar. The Love numbers vanish for the neutral scalar, but are inversely proportional to the electric charge of the scalar in the small charge limit. We study the near-zone of the dynamical equation with non-vanishing frequency $ω$, and show that the system have an $SL(2,\mathbb{R})$ Love-like symmetry. The symmetry selects a special frequency $ω_{\rm cr}$, which vanishes in the neutral case, so that the real part of the response coefficient vanishes identically. We also generalize the results into higher dimensions to some extend.

Chemical versus physical pressure effects on the structure transition of bilayer nickelates

The observation of high-$T_c$ superconductivity (HTSC) in concomitant with pressure-induced orthorhombic-tetragonal structural transition in the bilayer La$_{3}$Ni$_2$O$_7$ has sparked hopes of achieving HTSC by stabilizing the tetragonal phase at ambient pressure. To mimic the effect of external physical pressures, the application of chemical pressure via replacing La$^3$$^+$ with smaller rare-earth R$^3$$^+$ has been considered as a potential route. Here we clarify the distinct effects of chemical and physical pressures on the structural transition of bilayer nickelates through a combined experimental and theoretical investigation. Contrary to general expectations, we find that substitutions of smaller R$^3$$^+$ for La$^3$$^+$ in La$_{3-x}$R$_x$Ni$_2$O$_{7-δ}$, despite of an overall lattice contraction, produce stronger orthorhombic structural distortions and thus require higher pressures to induce the structural transition. We established a quantitative relationship between the critical pressure $P_c$ for structural transition and the average size of $A$-site cations. A linear extrapolation of $P_c$ versus <$r_A$> yields a putative critical value of <$r_A$>$_c$ ~ 1.23 angstrom for $P_c$ ~ 1 bar. The negative correlation between $P_c$ and <$r_A$> indicates that it is unlikely to reduce $P_c$ to ambient by replacing La$^3$$^+$ with smaller R$^3$$^+$ ions. Instead, partial substitution of La$^3$$^+$ with larger cations such as alkaline-earth Sr$^2$$^+$ or Ba$^2$$^+$ might be a feasible approach. Our results provide valuable guidelines in the quest of ambient-pressure HTSC in bilayer nickelates.

An Outline of Prognostics and Health Management Large Model: Concepts, Paradigms, and Challenges

Prognosis and Health Management (PHM), critical for ensuring task completion by complex systems and preventing unexpected failures, is widely adopted in aerospace, manufacturing, maritime, rail, energy, etc. However, PHM's development is constrained by bottlenecks like generalization, interpretation and verification abilities. Presently, generative artificial intelligence (AI), represented by Large Model, heralds a technological revolution with the potential to fundamentally reshape traditional technological fields and human production methods. Its capabilities, including strong generalization, reasoning, and generative attributes, present opportunities to address PHM's bottlenecks. To this end, based on a systematic analysis of the current challenges and bottlenecks in PHM, as well as the research status and advantages of Large Model, we propose a novel concept and three progressive paradigms of Prognosis and Health Management Large Model (PHM-LM) through the integration of the Large Model with PHM. Subsequently, we provide feasible technical approaches for PHM-LM to bolster PHM's core capabilities within the framework of the three paradigms. Moreover, to address core issues confronting PHM, we discuss a series of technical challenges of PHM-LM throughout the entire process of construction and application. This comprehensive effort offers a holistic PHM-LM technical framework, and provides avenues for new PHM technologies, methodologies, tools, platforms and applications, which also potentially innovates design, research & development, verification and application mode of PHM. And furthermore, a new generation of PHM with AI will also capably be realized, i.e., from custom to generalized, from discriminative to generative, and from theoretical conditions to practical applications.

The Surprising Effectiveness of Weyl Gravity in Probing Quantum Corrections to AdS Black Holes

Computing leading higher curvature contributions to thermodynamic quantities of AdS black hole is drastically simplified once the higher curvature terms are expressed in terms of powers of Weyl tensor by applying proper field redefinitions, avoiding the usual complications caused by higher derivative Gibbons-Hawking-York (GHY) term or surface counterterms. We establish the method by computing the Euclidean action of general rotating AdS black holes in five dimensional quadratic curvature theories with or without supersymmetry and verifying the results numerically. Our result is the state of the art for charged rotating AdS black holes in five dimensional minimal gauged supergravity including corrections from all three supersymmetric curvature squared terms. Our approach facilitates precision tests in the AdS/CFT correspondence and should be applicable in diverse dimensions.

MIPI 2024 Challenge on Demosaic for HybridEVS Camera: Methods and Results

The increasing demand for computational photography and imaging on mobile platforms has led to the widespread development and integration of advanced image sensors with novel algorithms in camera systems. However, the scarcity of high-quality data for research and the rare opportunity for in-depth exchange of views from industry and academia constrain the development of mobile intelligent photography and imaging (MIPI). Building on the achievements of the previous MIPI Workshops held at ECCV 2022 and CVPR 2023, we introduce our third MIPI challenge including three tracks focusing on novel image sensors and imaging algorithms. In this paper, we summarize and review the Nighttime Flare Removal track on MIPI 2024. In total, 170 participants were successfully registered, and 14 teams submitted results in the final testing phase. The developed solutions in this challenge achieved state-of-the-art performance on Nighttime Flare Removal. More details of this challenge and the link to the dataset can be found at https://mipi-challenge.org/MIPI2024/.

Improved Reall-Santos method for AdS black holes in general 4-derivative gravities

For asymptotically flat black holes, Reall-Santos method is a convenient tool to compute leading higher derivative corrections to the thermodynamic quantities without actually solving the modified field equations. However, there are subtleties in its generalization to asymptotically AdS black holes with general higher derivative corrections. First of all, it is necessary to know all the higher derivative holographic counterterms and the surface terms implementing the variational principle and subtracting the divergence. One then needs to solve for the modified AdS radius and rescale the time coordinate in an appropriate way such that the induced metric on the conformal boundary of AdS black hole is not modified. We observe that Reall-Santos method can be directly applied to a particular 4-derivative gravity model, known as the Einstein-Weyl gravity, which does not modify the AdS radius and requires only the Gibbons-Hawking-York term and holographic counterterms for the 2-derivative theory. We thus suggest that to compute the thermodynamic quantities of AdS black holes in general 4-derivative theories of gravity, one simply needs to transform it to a Einstein-Weyl gravity with identical thermodynamic variables by appropriate field redefinitions. We explicitly verify this proposal with spherically-symmetric and static charged black holes in Einstein-Maxwell theory extended with generic 4-derivative interactions.

Boosted Rotating Dyonic Strings in Salam-Sezgin Model

We show that the bosonic sector of the $N=(1,0),\, 6D$ Salam-Sezgin gauged supergravity model possesses a $T$-duality symmetry upon a circle reduction to $D=5$. We then construct a simple magnetic rotating string solution with two equal angular momenta. Applying the $T$-duality transformation to this solution, we obtain the general boosted rotating dyonic black string solutions whose global structures and thermodynamic quantities are also analyzed. Owing to the fact that the solutions are not asymptotically flat, we find that there are two distinct globally-different non-extremal solutions with two different sets of thermal dynamic variables, with both satisfying the thermodynamic first law and the corresponding Small relations. However, their BPS limit becomes the same and we show that it preserves one quarter of supersymmetry by directly solving the corresponding Killing spinor equations.

Versatile Medical Image Segmentation Learned from Multi-Source Datasets via Model Self-Disambiguation

A versatile medical image segmentation model applicable to images acquired with diverse equipment and protocols can facilitate model deployment and maintenance. However, building such a model typically demands a large, diverse, and fully annotated dataset, which is challenging to obtain due to the labor-intensive nature of data curation. To address this challenge, we propose a cost-effective alternative that harnesses multi-source data with only partial or sparse segmentation labels for training, substantially reducing the cost of developing a versatile model. We devise strategies for model self-disambiguation, prior knowledge incorporation, and imbalance mitigation to tackle challenges associated with inconsistently labeled multi-source data, including label ambiguity and modality, dataset, and class imbalances. Experimental results on a multi-modal dataset compiled from eight different sources for abdominal structure segmentation have demonstrated the effectiveness and superior performance of our method compared to state-of-the-art alternative approaches. We anticipate that its cost-saving features, which optimize the utilization of existing annotated data and reduce annotation efforts for new data, will have a significant impact in the field.

CorNav: Autonomous Agent with Self-Corrected Planning for Zero-Shot Vision-and-Language Navigation

Understanding and following natural language instructions while navigating through complex, real-world environments poses a significant challenge for general-purpose robots. These environments often include obstacles and pedestrians, making it essential for autonomous agents to possess the capability of self-corrected planning to adjust their actions based on feedback from the surroundings. However, the majority of existing vision-and-language navigation (VLN) methods primarily operate in less realistic simulator settings and do not incorporate environmental feedback into their decision-making processes. To address this gap, we introduce a novel zero-shot framework called CorNav, utilizing a large language model for decision-making and comprising two key components: 1) incorporating environmental feedback for refining future plans and adjusting its actions, and 2) multiple domain experts for parsing instructions, scene understanding, and refining predicted actions. In addition to the framework, we develop a 3D simulator that renders realistic scenarios using Unreal Engine 5. To evaluate the effectiveness and generalization of navigation agents in a zero-shot multi-task setting, we create a benchmark called NavBench. Extensive experiments demonstrate that CorNav consistently outperforms all baselines by a significant margin across all tasks. On average, CorNav achieves a success rate of 28.1\%, surpassing the best baseline's performance of 20.5\%.

GarchingSim: An Autonomous Driving Simulator with Photorealistic Scenes and Minimalist Workflow

Conducting real road testing for autonomous driving algorithms can be expensive and sometimes impractical, particularly for small startups and research institutes. Thus, simulation becomes an important method for evaluating these algorithms. However, the availability of free and open-source simulators is limited, and the installation and configuration process can be daunting for beginners and interdisciplinary researchers. We introduce an autonomous driving simulator with photorealistic scenes, meanwhile keeping a user-friendly workflow. The simulator is able to communicate with external algorithms through ROS2 or Socket.IO, making it compatible with existing software stacks. Furthermore, we implement a highly accurate vehicle dynamics model within the simulator to enhance the realism of the vehicle's physical effects. The simulator is able to serve various functions, including generating synthetic data and driving with machine learning-based algorithms. Moreover, we prioritize simplicity in the deployment process, ensuring that beginners find it approachable and user-friendly.

Thermodynamics of Taub-NUT and Plebanski Solutions

We observe the parallel between the null Killing vector on the horizon and degenerate Killing vectors at both north and south poles in Kerr-Taub-NUT and general Plebanski solutions. This suggests a correspondence between the pairs of the angular momentum/velocity and the NUT charge/potential. We treat the time as a real line such that the Misner strings are physical. We find that the NUT charge spreads along the Misner strings, analogous to that the mass in the Schwarzschild black hole sits at its spacetime singularity. We develop procedures to calculate all the thermodynamic quantities and we find that the results are consistent with the first law (Wald formalism), the Euclidean action and the Smarr relation. We also apply the Wald formalism, the Euclidean action approach, and the (generalized) Komar integration to the electric and magnetic black holes in a class of EMD theories, and also to boosted black strings and Kaluza-Klein monopoles in five dimensions, to gain better understandings of how to deal with the subtleties associated with Dirac and Misner strings.

$D=5$ Rotating Black Holes in Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet Gravity: Mass and Angular Momentum in Extremality

We consider perturbative solutions in Einstein gravity with higher-derivative extensions and address some subtle issues of taking extremal limit. As a concrete new result, we construct the perturbative rotating black hole in five dimensions with equal angular momenta $J$ and general mass $M$ in Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity, up to and including the linear order of the standard Gauss-Bonnet coupling constant $α$. We obtain the near horizon structure of the near extremal solution, with the blackening factor of the order $α$. In the extremal limit, the mass-angular momentum relation reduces to $M=\frac32 π^{\frac13} J^{\frac23} + πα$. The positive sign of the $α$-correction implies that the centrifugal repulsion associated with rotations becomes weaker than the gravitational attraction under the unitary requirement for the Gauss-Bonnet term.

Dyonic Black Strings and the Charge Lattice in Salam-Sezgin model

We obtain a class of dyonic black string solutions in 6D Salam-Sezgin model. We then calculate various thermodynamic quantities associated with this solution. Interestingly, for the thermodynamic quantities to be well defined, the temperature is bounded from above. However, the mass and entropy can still grow without any upper bound, reaching infinity at the maximal temperature. The quantization condition obeyed by various charges is also analyzed. In particular, we find that the Dirac quantization condition selects one particular sign choice for the magnetic string charges.

Prediction of fully metallic σ-bonded boron framework induced high superconductivity above 100 K in thermodynamically stable Sr2B5 at 40 GPa

Metal borides have been considered as potential high-temperature superconductors since the discovery of record-holding 39 K superconductivity in bulk MgB2. In this work, we identified a superconducting yet thermodynamically stable F43m Sr2B5 at 40 GPa with a unique covalent sp3-hybridized boron framework through extensive first-principles structure searches. Remarkably, solving the anisotropic Migdal-Eliashberg equations resulted in a high superconducting critical temperature (Tc) around 100 K, exceeding the boiling point (77 K) of liquid nitrogen. Our in-depth analysis revealed that the high-temperature superconductivity mainly originates from the strong coupling between the metalized σ-bonded electronic bands and E phonon modes of boron atoms. Moreover, anharmonic phonon simulations suggest that F43m Sr2B5 might be recovered to ambient pressure. Our current findings provide a prototype structure with a full σ-bonded boron framework for the design of high-Tc superconducting borides that may expand to a broader variety of lightweight compounds.

Negative Corrections to Black Hole Entropy from String Theory

We report for the first time that in heterotic string compactified on 4-torus or equivalently IIA string compactified on K3, the leading $α'$ corrections to the rotating black string entropy at fixed conserved charges can be negative. This further implies that the correction to the mass of extremal rotating string is positive, opposite to the standard expectation from the weak gravity conjecture. Our result suggests that the validity of positivity of entropy shift due to higher order operators depends on other factors omitted previously in the effective field theory analysis.

Pressure-induced superconductivity in polycrystalline La3Ni2O7

We synthesized polycrystalline La3Ni2O7 samples by using the sol-gel method without post-annealing under high oxygen pressure, and then measured temperature-dependent resistivity under various hydrostatic pressures up to 14.5 GPa in a cubic anvil cell apparatus. We find that the density-wave-like anomaly in resistivity is progressively suppressed with increasing pressure and the resistivity drop corresponding to the onset of superconductivity emerges at pressure as low as 7 GPa. Zero resistivity is achieved at 9 GPa below 6.6 K, which increases quickly with pressure to 35.6 K at 14.5 GPa. The observation of zero-resistance state in the polycrystalline La3Ni2O7 samples under high pressures not only corroborates the recent report of superconductivity in the pressurized La3Ni2O7 crystals but also facilitates further studies on this emerging family of nickelate high-Tc superconductors.
