Measurement of the topological surface state optical conductance in bulk-insulating Sn-doped Bi$_{1.1}$Sb$_{0.9}$Te$_2$S single crystals

Topological surface states have been extensively observed via optics in thin films of topological insulators. However, in typical thick single crystals of these materials, bulk states are dominant and it is difficult for optics to verify the existence of topological surface states definitively. In this work, we studied the charge dynamics of the newly formulated bulk-insulating Sn-doped Bi$_{1.1}$Sb$_{0.9}$Te$_2$S crystal by using time-domain terahertz spectroscopy. This compound shows much better insulating behavior than any other bulk-insulating topological insulators reported previously. The transmission can be enhanced an amount which is 5$\%$ of the zero-field transmission by applying magnetic field to 7 T, an effect which we believe is due to the suppression of topological surface states. This suppression is essentially independent of the thicknesses of the samples, showing the two-dimensional nature of the transport. The suppression of surface states in field allows us to use the crystal slab itself as a reference sample to extract the surface conductance, mobility, charge density and scattering rate. Our measurements set the stage for the investigation of phenomena out of the semi-classical regime, such as the topological magneto-electric effect.

Magneto-optical signature of massless Kane electrons in Cd3As2

We report on optical reflectivity experiments performed on Cd3As2 over a broad range of photon energies and magnetic fields. The observed response clearly indicates the presence of 3D massless charge carriers. The specific cyclotron resonance absorption in the quantum limit implies that we are probing massless Kane electrons rather than symmetry-protected 3D Dirac particles. The latter may appear at a smaller energy scale and are not directly observed in our infrared experiments.

SlangSD: Building and Using a Sentiment Dictionary of Slang Words for Short-Text Sentiment Classification

Sentiment in social media is increasingly considered as an important resource for customer segmentation, market understanding, and tackling other socio-economic issues. However, sentiment in social media is difficult to measure since user-generated content is usually short and informal. Although many traditional sentiment analysis methods have been proposed, identifying slang sentiment words remains untackled. One of the reasons is that slang sentiment words are not available in existing dictionaries or sentiment lexicons. To this end, we propose to build the first sentiment dictionary of slang words to aid sentiment analysis of social media content. It is laborious and time-consuming to collect and label the sentiment polarity of a comprehensive list of slang words. We present an approach to leverage web resources to construct an extensive Slang Sentiment word Dictionary (SlangSD) that is easy to maintain and extend. SlangSD is publicly available for research purposes. We empirically show the advantages of using SlangSD, the newly-built slang sentiment word dictionary for sentiment classification, and provide examples demonstrating its ease of use with an existing sentiment system.

Tuning and Stabilizing Topological Insulator Bi2Se3 in the Intrinsic Regime by Charge Extraction with Organic Overlayers

In this work, we use charge extraction via organic overlayer deposition to lower the chemical potential of topological insulator Bi2Se3 thin films into the intrinsic (bulk-insulating) regime. We demonstrate the tuning and stabilization of intrinsic topological insulators at high mobility with low-cost organic films. With the protection of the organic charge extraction layers tetrafluorotetracyanoquinodimethane(F4TCNQ) or tris(acetylacetonato)cobalt(III) (Co(acac)3), the sample is stable in the atmosphere with chemical potential ~135 meV above the Dirac point (85 meV below the conduction band minimum, well within the topological insulator regime) after four months, which is an extraordinary level of environmental stability. The Co complex represents the first use of an organometallic for modulating TI charge density. The mobility of surface state electrons is enhanced as high as ~2000 cm2/Vs. Even at room temperature, a true topologically insulating state is realized and stabilized for months' exposure to the atmosphere.

High-Resolution Faraday Rotation and Electron-Phonon Coupling in Surface States of the Bulk-Insulating Topological Insulator Cu$_{0.02}$Bi$_2$Se$_3$

We have utilized time-domain magneto-terahertz spectroscopy to investigate the low frequency optical response of topological insulator Cu$_{0.02}$Bi$_2$Se$_3$ and Bi$_2$Se$_3$ films. With both field and frequency dependence, such experiments give sufficient information to measure the mobility and carrier density of multiple conduction channels simultaneously. We observe sharp cyclotron resonances (CRs) in both materials. The small amount of Cu incorporated into the Cu$_{0.02}$Bi$_2$Se$_3$ induces a true bulk insulator with only a \textit{single} type of conduction with total sheet carrier density $\sim4.9\times10^{12}/$cm$^{2}$ and mobility as high as 4000 cm$^{2}/$V$\cdot$s. This is consistent with conduction from two virtually identical topological surface states (TSSs) on top and bottom of the film with a chemical potential $\sim$145 meV above the Dirac point and in the bulk gap. The CR broadens at high fields, an effect that we attribute to an electron-phonon interaction. This assignment is supported by an extended Drude model analysis of the zero field Drude conductance. In contrast, in normal Bi$_2$Se$_3$ films two conduction channels were observed and we developed a self-consistent analysis method to distinguish the dominant TSSs and coexisting trivial bulk/2DEG states. Our high-resolution Faraday rotation spectroscopy on Cu$_{0.02}$Bi$_2$Se$_3$ paves the way for the observation of quantized Faraday rotation under experimentally achievable conditions to push chemical potential in the lowest Landau Level.

Anomalous gap edge dissipation in disordered superconductors on the brink of localization

Superconductivity in disordered systems close to an incipient localization transition has been an area of investigation for many years. It has been noted that in such highly disordered superconductors, anomalous spectral weight develops in their conductivity near and below the superconducting gap energy. In this work we investigate the low frequency conductivity in disordered superconducting NbN thin films close to the localization transition with time-domain terahertz spectroscopy. In the normal state, strong deviations from the Drude form due to incipient localization are found. In the superconducting state we find substantial spectral weight at frequencies well below the superconducting gap scale derived from tunneling. We analyze this spectral weight in the context of a model of disorder induced broadening of the quasiparticle density of states and effective pair-breaking. We find that although aspects of the optical and tunneling data can be consistently modeled in terms of this effect of mesoscopic disorder, the optical conductivity returns to the normal state value much faster than any model predicts. This points to the non-trivial interplay of superconductivity and disorder close to localization.

On the Scale free laws of Urban Facilities

We implement a double stochastic process as the mathematical model for the spatial point patterns of urban facilities. We find that the model with power covariance function can produce the best fit not only to $K$ function (whose derivative gives the radial distribution $ρ(t) = K'(t)/2πt$) but also to additional facts of spatial point patterns. These facts include the mean-variance relationship of number of events in a series of expanding bins, and other statistics beyond the first two orders, such as inter-event distribution function $H(t)$ and nearest neighbor distribution functions $G(t)$ and $F(t)$.

Record Surface State Mobility and Quantum Hall Effect in Topological Insulator Thin Films via Interface Engineering

Material defects remain as the main bottleneck to the progress of topological insulators (TIs). In particular, efforts to achieve thin TI samples with dominant surface transport have always led to increased defects and degraded mobilities, thus making it difficult to probe the quantum regime of the topological surface states. Here, by utilizing a novel buffer layer scheme composed of an In2Se3/(Bi0.5In0.5)2Se3 heterostructure, we introduce a quantum generation of Bi2Se3 films with an order of magnitude enhanced mobilities than before. This scheme has led to the first observation of the quantum Hall effect in Bi2Se3.

Deleveraging, short sale constraints and market crash

In this paper, we develop a theory of market crashes resulting from a deleveraging shock. We consider two representative investors in a market holding different opinions about the public available information. The deleveraging shock forces the high confidence investors to liquidate their risky assets to pay back their margin loans. When short sales are constrained, the deleveraging shock creates a liquidity vacuum in which no trades can occur between the two representative investors until the price drop to a threshold below which low confidence investors take over the reduced demands. There are two roles short sellers could play to stabilize the market. First, short sellers provide extra supply in a bullish market so that the price of the asset is settled lower than otherwise. Second, short sellers catch the falling price earlier in the deleveraging process if they are previously allowed to hold a larger short position. We apply our model to explain the recent deleveraging crisis of the Chinese market with great success.

Positive skewness, anti-leverage, reverse volatility asymmetry, and short sale constraints: Evidence from the Chinese markets

There are some statistical anomalies in the Chinese stock market, i.e., positive return skewness, anti-leverage effect (positive returns induce higher volatility than negative returns); and reverse volatility asymmetry (contemporaneous return-volatility correlation is positive). In this paper, we first confirm the existence of these anomalies using daily firm-level stock return data on the raw returns, excess returns and normalized excess returns. We empirically show that the asymmetry response of investors to news is one cause of the statistical anomalies if short sales are constrained. Then in the context of slow adoption of security lending policy, we conduct panel analysis and empirically verify that the lifting of short sale constraints leads to significantly less skewness, less anti-leverage effect and less reverse volatility asymmetry. Positive skewness is a feature of lottery. Investors are encouraged to bet on the upside lottery like potentials in the Chinese markets where the stocks skew more to the upside when short sales are constrained.

Soliton metrics for two-loop renormalization group flow on 3D unimodular Lie groups

The two-loop renormalization group flow is studied via the induced bracket flow on 3D unimodular Lie groups. A number of steady solitons are found. Some of these steady solitons come from maximally symmetric metrics that are steady, shrinking, or expanding solitons under Ricci flow, while others are not obviously related to Ricci flow solitons.

Stability of low-carrier-density topological-insulator Bi$_2$Se$_3$ thin films and effect of capping layers

Although over the past number of years there have been many advances in the materials aspects of topological insulators (TI), one of the ongoing challenges with these materials is the protection of them against aging. In particular, the recent development of low-carrier-density bulk-insulating Bi$_2$Se$_3$ thin films and their sensitivity to air demands reliable capping layers to stabilize their electronic properties. Here, we study the stability of the low-carrier-density Bi$_2$Se$_3$ thin films in air with and without various capping layers using DC and THz probes. Without any capping layers, the carrier density increases by ~150% over a week and by ~280% over 9 months. In situ-deposited Se and ex situ-deposited Poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) suppresses the aging effect to ~27% and ~88% respectively over 9 months. The combination of effective capping layers and low-carrier-density TI films will open up new opportunities in topological insulators.

Orientational ordering and phase behaviour of a binary mixture of hard spheres and hard spherocylinders

We study structure and fluid-phase behaviour of a binary mixture of hard spheres (HSs) and hard spherocylinders (HSCs) in isotropic and nematic states using the $NP_nAT$ ensemble Monte Carlo (MC) method in which a normal pressure tensor component is fixed in a system confined between two hard walls. The method allows one to estimate the location of the isotropic-nematic phase transition and to observe the asymmetry in the composition between the coexisting phases, with the expected increase of the HSC concentration in the nematic phase. This is in stark contrast with the previously reported MC simulations where a conventional isotropic $NPT$ ensemble was used. We further compare the simulation results with the theoretical predictions of two analytic theories that extend the original Parsons-Lee theory using the one-fluid and the many-fluid approximation [Malijevský {\it at al} J. Chem. Phys. \textbf{129}, 144504 (2008)]. In the one-fluid version of the theory the properties of the mixture are mapped on an effective one-component HS system while in the many-fluid theory the components of the mixtures are represented as separate effective HS particles. The comparison reveals that both the one- and the many-fluid approaches provide a reasonably accurate quantitative description of the mixture including the predictions of the isotropic-nematic phase boundary and degree of orientational order of the HSC-HS mixtures.

Wavelet-based Estimator for the Hurst Parameters of Fractional Brownian Sheet

It is proposed a class of statistical estimators $\hat H =(\hat H_1, \ldots, \hat H_d)$ for the Hurst parameters $H=(H_1, \ldots, H_d)$ of fractional Brownian field via multi-dimensional wavelet analysis and least squares, which are asymptotically normal. These estimators can be used to detect self-similarity and long-range dependence in multi-dimensional signals, which is important in texture classification and improvement of diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) of nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR). Some fractional Brownian sheets will be simulated and the simulated data are used to validate these estimators. We find that when $H_i \geq 1/2$, the estimators are efficient, and when $H_i < 1/2$, there are some bias.

Heterogeneous Metric Learning with Content-based Regularization for Software Artifact Retrieval

The problem of software artifact retrieval has the goal to effectively locate software artifacts, such as a piece of source code, in a large code repository. This problem has been traditionally addressed through the textual query. In other words, information retrieval techniques will be exploited based on the textual similarity between queries and textual representation of software artifacts, which is generated by collecting words from comments, identifiers, and descriptions of programs. However, in addition to these semantic information, there are rich information embedded in source codes themselves. These source codes, if analyzed properly, can be a rich source for enhancing the efforts of software artifact retrieval. To this end, in this paper, we develop a feature extraction method on source codes. Specifically, this method can capture both the inherent information in the source codes and the semantic information hidden in the comments, descriptions, and identifiers of the source codes. Moreover, we design a heterogeneous metric learning approach, which allows to integrate code features and text features into the same latent semantic space. This, in turn, can help to measure the artifact similarity by exploiting the joint power of both code and text features. Finally, extensive experiments on real-world data show that the proposed method can help to improve the performances of software artifact retrieval with a significant margin.

Taylor's Law and the Spatial Distribution of Urban Facilities

Taylor's law is the footprint of ecosystems, which admits a power function relationship $S^{2}=am^{b}$ between the variance $S^{2}$ and mean number $m$ of organisms in an area. We examine the distribution of spatial coordinate data of seven urban facilities (beauty salons, banks, stadiums, schools, pharmacy, convenient stores and restaurants) in 37 major cities in China, and find that Taylor's law is validated among all 7 considered facilities, in the fashion that either all cities are combined together or each city is considered separately. Moreover, we find that the exponent $b$ falls between 1 and 2, which reveals that the distribution of urban facilities resembles that of the organisms in ecosystems. Furthermore, through decomposing the inverse of exponent $b$, we examine two different factors affecting\emph{ }the numbers of facilities in an area of a city respectively, which are the city-specific factor and the facility-specific factor. The city-specific factor reflects the overall density of all the facilities in a city, while the facility-specific factor indicates the overall aggregation level of each type of facility in all the cities. For example, Beijing ranks the first in the overall density, while restaurant tops the overall aggregation level.

Scaling Properties of Urban Facilities

Two measurements are employed to quantitatively investigate the scaling properties of the spatial distribution of urban facilities, the K function by number counting and the variance-mean relationship with the method of expanding bins. The K function and the variance-mean relationship are both power functions. It means that the spatial distribution of urban facilities are scaling invariant. Further analysis of more data (which includes 8 types of facilities in 37 major Chinese cities) shows that the exponents of the power function do not have systematic variations across facilities and cities, which suggests the possibility that the scaling rule is universal. A double stochastic process (DSP) model is proposed such that the two empirical results can both be embedded. Simulation of DSP yields better agreement with the urban data than of the correlated percolation model.

A sudden collapse in the transport lifetime across the topological phase transition in $(Bi_{1-x}In_x)_2 Se_3$

Topological insulators (TIs) are newly discovered states of matter with robust metallic surface states protected by the topological properties of the bulk wavefunctions. A quantum phase transition (QPT) from a TI to a conventional insulator and a change in topological class can only occur when the bulk band gap closes. In this work, we have utilized time-domain terahertz spectroscopy (TDTS) to investigate the low frequency conductance in (Bi$_{1-x}$In$_x$)$_2$Se$_3$ as we tune through this transition by indium substitution. Above certain substitution levels we observe a collapse in the transport lifetime that indicates the destruction of the topological phase. We associate this effect with the threshold where states from opposite surfaces hybridize. The substitution level of the threshold is thickness dependent and only asymptotically approaches the bulk limit $x \approx 0.06$ where a maximum in the mid-infrared absorption is exhibited. This absorption can be identified with the bulk band gap closing and a change in topological class. The correlation length associated with the QPT appears as the evanescent length of the surface states. The observation of the thickness-dependent collapse of the transport lifetime shows the unusual role that finite size effects play in this topological QPT.
