Incorporating Graph Attention Mechanism into Geometric Problem Solving Based on Deep Reinforcement Learning

In the context of online education, designing an automatic solver for geometric problems has been considered a crucial step towards general math Artificial Intelligence (AI), empowered by natural language understanding and traditional logical inference. In most instances, problems are addressed by adding auxiliary components such as lines or points. However, adding auxiliary components automatically is challenging due to the complexity in selecting suitable auxiliary components especially when pivotal decisions have to be made. The state-of-the-art performance has been achieved by exhausting all possible strategies from the category library to identify the one with the maximum likelihood. However, an extensive strategy search have to be applied to trade accuracy for ef-ficiency. To add auxiliary components automatically and efficiently, we present deep reinforcement learning framework based on the language model, such as BERT. We firstly apply the graph attention mechanism to reduce the strategy searching space, called AttnStrategy, which only focus on the conclusion-related components. Meanwhile, a novel algorithm, named Automatically Adding Auxiliary Components using Reinforcement Learning framework (A3C-RL), is proposed by forcing an agent to select top strategies, which incorporates the AttnStrategy and BERT as the memory components. Results from extensive experiments show that the proposed A3C-RL algorithm can substantially enhance the average precision by 32.7% compared to the traditional MCTS. In addition, the A3C-RL algorithm outperforms humans on the geometric questions from the annual University Entrance Mathematical Examination of China.

A universal programmable Gaussian Boson Sampler for drug discovery

Gaussian Boson Sampling (GBS) exhibits a unique ability to solve graph problems, such as finding cliques in complex graphs. It is noteworthy that many drug discovery tasks can be viewed as the clique-finding process, making them potentially suitable for quantum computation. However, to perform these tasks in their quantum-enhanced form, a large-scale quantum hardware with universal programmability is essential, which is yet to be achieved even with the most advanced GBS devices. Here, we construct a time-bin encoded GBS photonic quantum processor that is universal, programmable, and software-scalable. Our processor features freely adjustable squeezing parameters and can implement arbitrary unitary operations with a programmable interferometer. Using our processor, we have demonstrated the clique-finding task in a 32-node graph, where we found the maximum weighted clique with approximately twice the probability of success compared to classical sampling. Furthermore, a multifunctional quantum pharmaceutical platform is developed. This GBS processor is successfully used to execute two different drug discovery methods, namely molecular docking and RNA folding prediction. Our work achieves the state-of-the-art in GBS circuitry with its distinctive universal and programmable architecture which advances GBS towards real-world applications.

Inter-X: Towards Versatile Human-Human Interaction Analysis

The analysis of the ubiquitous human-human interactions is pivotal for understanding humans as social beings. Existing human-human interaction datasets typically suffer from inaccurate body motions, lack of hand gestures and fine-grained textual descriptions. To better perceive and generate human-human interactions, we propose Inter-X, a currently largest human-human interaction dataset with accurate body movements and diverse interaction patterns, together with detailed hand gestures. The dataset includes ~11K interaction sequences and more than 8.1M frames. We also equip Inter-X with versatile annotations of more than 34K fine-grained human part-level textual descriptions, semantic interaction categories, interaction order, and the relationship and personality of the subjects. Based on the elaborate annotations, we propose a unified benchmark composed of 4 categories of downstream tasks from both the perceptual and generative directions. Extensive experiments and comprehensive analysis show that Inter-X serves as a testbed for promoting the development of versatile human-human interaction analysis. Our dataset and benchmark will be publicly available for research purposes.

Experimental 3D super-localization with Laguerre-Gaussian modes

Improving three-dimensional (3D) localization precision is of paramount importance for super-resolution imaging. By properly engineering the point spread function (PSF), such as utilizing Laguerre-Gaussian (LG) modes and their superposition, the ultimate limits of 3D localization precision can be enhanced. However, achieving these limits is challenging, as it often involves complicated detection strategies and practical limitations. In this work, we rigorously derive the ultimate 3D localization limits of LG modes and their superposition, specifically rotation modes, in the multi-parameter estimation framework. Our findings reveal that a significant portion of the information required for achieving 3D super-localization of LG modes can be obtained through feasible intensity detection. Moreover, the 3D ultimate precision can be achieved when the azimuthal index $l$ is zero. To provide a proof-of-principle demonstration, we develop an iterative maximum likelihood estimation (MLE) algorithm that converges to the 3D position of a point source, considering the pixelation and detector noise. The experimental implementation exhibits an improvement of up to two-fold in lateral localization precision and up to twenty-fold in axial localization precision when using LG modes compared to Gaussian mode. We also showcase the superior axial localization capability of the rotation mode within the near-focus region, effectively overcoming the limitations encountered by single LG modes. Notably, in the presence of realistic aberration, the algorithm robustly achieves the Cramér-Rao lower bound. Our findings provide valuable insights for evaluating and optimizing the achievable 3D localization precision, which will facilitate the advancements in super-resolution microscopy.

Strength-dependent Transition of Graphite Under Shock Condition Resolved by First Principles

The shock strength dependent formation of diamond represents one of the most intriguing questions in graphite research. Using ab initio DFT-trained carbon GNN model, we observe a strength-dependent graphite transition under shock. The poor sliding caused by scarce sliding time under high-strength shock forms hexagonal diamond with an orientation of (001)G//(100)HD+[010]G//[010]HD; under low-strength shock, cubic diamond forms after enough sliding time, unveiling the strength-dependent graphite transition. We provide computational evidence of the strength-dependent graphite transition from first principles, clarifying the long-term shock-induced hexagonal formation and structural strength-dependent trend source.

SC-Safety: A Multi-round Open-ended Question Adversarial Safety Benchmark for Large Language Models in Chinese

Large language models (LLMs), like ChatGPT and GPT-4, have demonstrated remarkable abilities in natural language understanding and generation. However, alongside their positive impact on our daily tasks, they can also produce harmful content that negatively affects societal perceptions. To systematically assess the safety of Chinese LLMs, we introduce SuperCLUE-Safety (SC-Safety) - a multi-round adversarial benchmark with 4912 open-ended questions covering more than 20 safety sub-dimensions. Adversarial human-model interactions and conversations significantly increase the challenges compared to existing methods. Experiments on 13 major LLMs supporting Chinese yield the following insights: 1) Closed-source models outperform open-sourced ones in terms of safety; 2) Models released from China demonstrate comparable safety levels to LLMs like GPT-3.5-turbo; 3) Some smaller models with 6B-13B parameters can compete effectively in terms of safety. By introducing SC-Safety, we aim to promote collaborative efforts to create safer and more trustworthy LLMs. The benchmark and findings provide guidance on model selection. A Hierarchy-based Analysis Approach for Blended Learning: A Case Study with Chinese Students

Blended learning is generally defined as the combination of traditional face-to-face learning and online learning. This learning mode has been widely used in advanced education across the globe due to the COVID-19 pandemic's social distance restriction as well as the development of technology. Online learning plays an important role in blended learning, and as it requires more student autonomy, the quality of blended learning in advanced education has been a persistent concern. Existing literature offers several elements and frameworks regarding evaluating the quality of blended learning. However, most of them either have different favours for evaluation perspectives or simply offer general guidance for evaluation, reducing the completeness, objectivity and practicalness of related works. In order to carry out a more intuitive and comprehensive evaluation framework, this paper proposes a hierarchy-based analysis approach. Applying gradient boosting model and feature importance evaluation method, this approach mainly analyses student engagement and its three identified dimensions (behavioral engagement, emotional engagement, cognitive engagement) to eliminate some existing stubborn problems when it comes to blended learning evaluation. The results show that cognitive engagement and emotional engagement play a more important role in blended learning evaluation, implying that these two should be considered to improve for better learning as well as teaching quality.

HAKE: A Knowledge Engine Foundation for Human Activity Understanding

Human activity understanding is of widespread interest in artificial intelligence and spans diverse applications like health care and behavior analysis. Although there have been advances in deep learning, it remains challenging. The object recognition-like solutions usually try to map pixels to semantics directly, but activity patterns are much different from object patterns, thus hindering success. In this work, we propose a novel paradigm to reformulate this task in two stages: first mapping pixels to an intermediate space spanned by atomic activity primitives, then programming detected primitives with interpretable logic rules to infer semantics. To afford a representative primitive space, we build a knowledge base including 26+ M primitive labels and logic rules from human priors or automatic discovering. Our framework, the Human Activity Knowledge Engine (HAKE), exhibits superior generalization ability and performance upon canonical methods on challenging benchmarks. Duration-adaptive Video Highlight Pre-caching for Vehicular Communication Network

Video traffic in vehicular communication networks (VCNs) faces exponential growth. However, different segments of most videos reveal various attractiveness for viewers, and the pre-caching decision is greatly affected by the dynamic service duration that edge nodes can provide services for mobile vehicles driving along a road. In this paper, we propose an efficient video highlight pre-caching scheme in the vehicular communication network, adapting to the service duration. Specifically, a highlight entropy model is devised with the consideration of the segments' popularity and continuity between segments within a period of time, based on which, an optimization problem of video highlight pre-caching is formulated. As this problem is non-convex and lacks a closed-form expression of the objective function, we decouple multiple variables by deriving candidate highlight segmentations of videos through wavelet transform, which can significantly reduce the complexity of highlight pre-caching. Then the problem is solved iteratively by a highlight-direction trimming algorithm, which is proven to be locally optimal. Simulation results based on real-world video datasets demonstrate significant improvement in highlight entropy and jitter compared to benchmark schemes.

Multimodal data, which can comprehensively perceive and recognize the physical world, has become an essential path towards general artificial intelligence. However, multimodal large models trained on public datasets often underperform in specific industrial domains. This paper proposes a multimodal federated learning framework that enables multiple enterprises to utilize private domain data to collaboratively train large models for vertical domains, achieving intelligent services across scenarios. MCPA: Multi-scale Cross Perceptron Attention Network for 2D Medical Image Segmentation

The UNet architecture, based on Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN), has demonstrated its remarkable performance in medical image analysis. However, it faces challenges in capturing long-range dependencies due to the limited receptive fields and inherent bias of convolutional operations. Recently, numerous transformer-based techniques have been incorporated into the UNet architecture to overcome this limitation by effectively capturing global feature correlations. However, the integration of the Transformer modules may result in the loss of local contextual information during the global feature fusion process. To overcome these challenges, we propose a 2D medical image segmentation model called Multi-scale Cross Perceptron Attention Network (MCPA). The MCPA consists of three main components: an encoder, a decoder, and a Cross Perceptron. The Cross Perceptron first captures the local correlations using multiple Multi-scale Cross Perceptron modules, facilitating the fusion of features across scales. The resulting multi-scale feature vectors are then spatially unfolded, concatenated, and fed through a Global Perceptron module to model global dependencies. Furthermore, we introduce a Progressive Dual-branch Structure to address the semantic segmentation of the image involving finer tissue structures. This structure gradually shifts the segmentation focus of MCPA network training from large-scale structural features to more sophisticated pixel-level features. We evaluate our proposed MCPA model on several publicly available medical image datasets from different tasks and devices, including the open large-scale dataset of CT (Synapse), MRI (ACDC), fundus camera (DRIVE, CHASE_DB1, HRF), and OCTA (ROSE). The experimental results show that our MCPA model achieves state-of-the-art performance. The code is available at https://github.com/simonustc/MCPA-for-2D-Medical-Image-Segmentation.

SuperCLUE: A Comprehensive Chinese Large Language Model Benchmark

Large language models (LLMs) have shown the potential to be integrated into human daily lives. Therefore, user preference is the most critical criterion for assessing LLMs' performance in real-world scenarios. However, existing benchmarks mainly focus on measuring models' accuracy using multi-choice questions, which limits the understanding of their capabilities in real applications. We fill this gap by proposing a comprehensive Chinese benchmark SuperCLUE, named after another popular Chinese LLM benchmark CLUE. SuperCLUE encompasses three sub-tasks: actual users' queries and ratings derived from an LLM battle platform (CArena), open-ended questions with single and multiple-turn dialogues (OPEN), and closed-ended questions with the same stems as open-ended single-turn ones (CLOSE). Our study shows that accuracy on closed-ended questions is insufficient to reflect human preferences achieved on open-ended ones. At the same time, they can complement each other to predict actual user preferences. We also demonstrate that GPT-4 is a reliable judge to automatically evaluate human preferences on open-ended questions in a Chinese context. Our benchmark will be released at https://www.CLUEbenchmarks.com

A Surrogate Data Assimilation Model for the Estimation of Dynamical System in a Limited Area

We propose a novel learning-based surrogate data assimilation (DA) model for efficient state estimation in a limited area. Our model employs a feedforward neural network for online computation, eliminating the need for integrating high-dimensional limited-area models. This approach offers significant computational advantages over traditional DA algorithms. Furthermore, our method avoids the requirement of lateral boundary conditions for the limited-area model in both online and offline computations. The design of our surrogate DA model is built upon a robust theoretical framework that leverages two fundamental concepts: observability and effective region. The concept of observability enables us to quantitatively determine the optimal amount of observation data necessary for accurate DA. Meanwhile, the concept of effective region substantially reduces the computational burden associated with computing observability and generating training data.

P-vectors: A Parallel-Coupled TDNN/Transformer Network for Speaker Verification

Typically, the Time-Delay Neural Network (TDNN) and Transformer can serve as a backbone for Speaker Verification (SV). Both of them have advantages and disadvantages from the perspective of global and local feature modeling. How to effectively integrate these two style features is still an open issue. In this paper, we explore a Parallel-coupled TDNN/Transformer Network (p-vectors) to replace the serial hybrid networks. The p-vectors allows TDNN and Transformer to learn the complementary information from each other through Soft Feature Alignment Interaction (SFAI) under the premise of preserving local and global features. Also, p-vectors uses the Spatial Frequency-channel Attention (SFA) to enhance the spatial interdependence modeling for input features. Finally, the outputs of dual branches of p-vectors are combined by Embedding Aggregation Layer (EAL). Experiments show that p-vectors outperforms MACCIF-TDNN and MFA-Conformer with relative improvements of 11.5% and 13.9% in EER on VoxCeleb1-O.

Rotating spokes, potential hump and modulated ionization in radio frequency magnetron discharges

In this work, the rotating spoke mode in the radio frequency (RF) magnetron discharge, which features the potential hump and the RF-modulated ionization, is observed and analyzed by means of the two dimensional axial-azimuthal (z-y) particle-in-cell/Monte Carlo collision method. The kinetic model combined with the linear analysis of the perturbation reveals that the cathode sheath (axial) electric field $E_z$ triggers the gradient drift instability (GDI), deforming the local potential until the instability condition is not fulfilled and the fluctuation growth stops in which moment the instability becomes saturated. The potential deformation consequently leads to the formation of the potential hump, surrounding which the azimuthal electric field $E_y$ is present. The saturation level of $E_y$ is found to be synchronized with and proportional to the time-changing voltage applied at the cathode, resulting in the RF-modulation of the electron heating in the $E_y$ due to $\nabla B$ drift. In the instability saturated stage, it is shown that the rotation velocity and direction of the spoke present in the simulations agree well with the experimental observation. In the instability linear stage, the instability mode wavelength and the growth rate are also found to be in good agreement with the prediction of the GDI linear fluid theory.

Surprisingly, our investigation leads to a Sobolev inequality without a mean curvature term, provided the hypersurface is mean convex.

Phased Progressive Learning with Coupling-Regulation-Imbalance Loss for Imbalanced Data Classification

Deep convolutional neural networks often perform poorly when faced with datasets that suffer from quantity imbalances and classification difficulties. Despite advances in the field, existing two-stage approaches still exhibit dataset bias or domain shift. To counter this, a phased progressive learning schedule has been proposed that gradually shifts the emphasis from representation learning to training the upper classifier. This approach is particularly beneficial for datasets with larger imbalances or fewer samples. Another new method a coupling-regulation-imbalance loss function is proposed, which combines three parts: a correction term, Focal loss, and LDAM loss. This loss is effective in addressing quantity imbalances and outliers, while regulating the focus of attention on samples with varying classification difficulties. These approaches have yielded satisfactory results on several benchmark datasets, including Imbalanced CIFAR10, Imbalanced CIFAR100, ImageNet-LT, and iNaturalist 2018, and can be easily generalized to other imbalanced classification models.
