Multiple Symmetry-Protected Dirac Nodal Lines in A Quasi-One-Dimensional Semimetal

Nodal-line semimetals (NLSMs) contains Dirac/Weyl type band-crossing nodes extending into shapes of line, loop and chain in the reciprocal space, leading to novel band topology and transport responses. Robust NLSMs against spin-orbit coupling typically occur in three-dimensional materials with more symmetry operations to protect the line nodes of band crossing, while the possibilities in lower-dimensional materials are rarely discussed. Here we demonstrate robust NLSM phase in a quasi-one-dimensional nonmagnetic semimetal TaNiTe5. Combining angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy measurements and first-principles calculations, we reveal how reduced dimension can interact with nonsymmorphic symmetry and result into multiple Dirac-type nodal lines with four-fold degeneracy. Our findings suggest rich physics and application in (quasi-)one-dimensional topological materials and call for further investigation on the interplay between the quantum confinement and nontrivial band topology.

Characterization of Low-Pressure MWPC from 1E3 to 1E5 Pa

The LPMWPC can be used as the ΔE detector for the low-energy charged particle detection. In order to increase the transmittance, the wires were adopted as the cathode. This work investigated the LPMWPC signal characteristics of this configuration and measured the gas gain with a mixture of 90%Ar and 10% CO2 from 1E3 to 1E5 Pa. From the test, the second pulse after the avalanche signal was observed, which proved to be caused by the ions' drifting near the cathode wire.

Data-Driven Space-Filling Curves

We propose a data-driven space-filling curve method for 2D and 3D visualization. Our flexible curve traverses the data elements in the spatial domain in a way that the resulting linearization better preserves features in space compared to existing methods. We achieve such data coherency by calculating a Hamiltonian path that approximately minimizes an objective function that describes the similarity of data values and location coherency in a neighborhood. Our extended variant even supports multiscale data via quadtrees and octrees. Our method is useful in many areas of visualization, including multivariate or comparative visualization, ensemble visualization of 2D and 3D data on regular grids, or multiscale visual analysis of particle simulations. The effectiveness of our method is evaluated with numerical comparisons to existing techniques and through examples of ensemble and multivariate datasets.

H-VGRAE: A Hierarchical Stochastic Spatial-Temporal Embedding Method for Robust Anomaly Detection in Dynamic Networks

Detecting anomalous edges and nodes in dynamic networks is critical in various areas, such as social media, computer networks, and so on. Recent approaches leverage network embedding technique to learn how to generate node representations for normal training samples and detect anomalies deviated from normal patterns. However, most existing network embedding approaches learn deterministic node representations, which are sensitive to fluctuations of the topology and attributes due to the high flexibility and stochasticity of dynamic networks. In this paper, a stochastic neural network, named by Hierarchical Variational Graph Recurrent Autoencoder (H-VGRAE), is proposed to detect anomalies in dynamic networks by the learned robust node representations in the form of random variables. H-VGRAE is a semi-supervised model to capture normal patterns in training set by maximizing the likelihood of the adjacency matrix and node attributes via variational inference. Comparing with existing methods, H-VGRAE has three main advantages: 1) H-VGRAE learns robust node representations through stochasticity modeling and the extraction of multi-scale spatial-temporal features; 2) H-VGRAE can be extended to deep structure with the increase of the dynamic network scale; 3) the anomalous edge and node can be located and interpreted from the probabilistic perspective. Extensive experiments on four real-world datasets demonstrate the outperformance of H-VGRAE on anomaly detection in dynamic networks compared with state-of-the-art competitors.

Fast and Robust Registration of Aerial Images and LiDAR data Based on Structrual Features and 3D Phase Correlation

Co-Registration of aerial imagery and Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) data is quilt challenging because the different imaging mechanism causes significant geometric and radiometric distortions between such data. To tackle the problem, this paper proposes an automatic registration method based on structural features and three-dimension (3D) phase correlation. In the proposed method, the LiDAR point cloud data is first transformed into the intensity map, which is used as the reference image. Then, we employ the Fast operator to extract uniformly distributed interest points in the aerial image by a partition strategy and perform a local geometric correction by using the collinearity equation to eliminate scale and rotation difference between images. Subsequently, a robust structural feature descriptor is build based on dense gradient features, and the 3D phase correlation is used to detect control points (CPs) between aerial images and LiDAR data in the frequency domain, where the image matching is accelerated by the 3D Fast Fourier Transform (FFT). Finally, the obtained CPs are employed to correct the exterior orientation elements, which is used to achieve co-registration of aerial images and LiDAR data. Experiments with two datasets of aerial images and LiDAR data show that the proposed method is much faster and more robust than state of the art methods

Measurement of the neutron beam profile of the Back-n white neutron facility at CSNS with a Micromegas detector

The Back-n white neutron beam line, which uses back-streaming white neutrons from the spallation target of the China Spallation Neutron Source, is used for nuclear data measurements. A Micromegas-based neutron detector with two variants was specially developed to measure the beam spot distribution for this beam line. In this article, the design, fabrication, and characterization of the detector are described. The results of the detector performance tests are presented, which include the relative electron transparency, the gain and the gain uniformity, and the neutron beam profile reconstruction capability. The result of the first measurement of the Back-n neutron beam spot distribution is also presented.

Molecular Beam Epitaxy Grown $Cr_2Te_3$ Thin Films with Tunable Curie Temperatures

Materials with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (PMA) effect with high Curie temperature ($T_C$) is essential in applications. In this work, $Cr_2Te_3$ thin films showing PMA with $T_C$ ranging from 165 K to 295 K were successfully grown on $Al_2O_3$ by the molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) technique. The structural analysis, magneto-transport and magnetic characterizations were conducted to study the physical origin of the improved $T_C$. In particular, ferromagnetic (FM) and antiferromagnetic (AFM) ordering competition were investigated. A phenomenological model based on the coupling degree between FM and AFM ordering was proposed to explain the observed $T_C$ enhancement. Our findings indicate that the $T_C$ of $Cr_2Te_3$ thin film can be tuned, which make it hold the potential for various magnetic applications.

Measurements of differential and angle-integrated cross sections for the $^{10}$B($n, α$)$^{7}$Li reaction in the neutron energy range from 1.0 eV to 2.5 MeV

Differential and angle-integrated cross sections for the $^{10}$B($n, α$)$^{7}$Li, $^{10}$B($n, α$$_{0}$)$^{7}$Li and $^{10}$B($n, α$$_{1}$)$^{7}$Li$^{*}$ reactions have been measured at CSNS Back-n white neutron source. Two enriched (90%) $^{10}$B samples 5.0 cm in diameter and ~85.0 $μ$g/cm$^{2}$ in thickness each with an aluminum backing were prepared, and back-to-back mounted at the sample holder. The charged particles were detected using the silicon-detector array of the Light-charged Particle Detector Array (LPDA) system. The neutron energy E$_{n}$ was determined by TOF (time-of-flight) method, and the valid $α$ events were extracted from the E$_{n}$-Amplitude two-dimensional spectrum. With 15 silicon detectors, the differential cross sections of $α$-particles were measured from 19.2° to 160.8°. Fitted with the Legendre polynomial series, the ($n, α$) cross sections were obtained through integration. The absolute cross sections were normalized using the standard cross sections of the $^{10}$B($n, α$)$^{7}$Li reaction in the 0.3 - 0.5 MeV neutron energy region. The measurement neutron energy range for the $^{10}$B($n, α$)$^{7}$Li reaction is 1.0 eV $\le$ En < 2.5 MeV (67 energy points), and for the $^{10}$B($n, α$$_{0}$)$^{7}$Li and $^{10}$B($n, α$$_{1}$)$^{7}$Li$^{*}$ reactions is 1.0 eV $\le$ En < 1.0 MeV (59 energy points). The present results have been analyzed by the resonance reaction mechanism and the level structure of the $^{11}$B compound system, and compared with existing measurements and evaluations.

Spectral Visualization Sharpening

In this paper, we propose a perceptually-guided visualization sharpening technique. We analyze the spectral behavior of an established comprehensive perceptual model to arrive at our approximated model based on an adapted weighting of the bandpass images from a Gaussian pyramid. The main benefit of this approximated model is its controllability and predictability for sharpening color-mapped visualizations. Our method can be integrated into any visualization tool as it adopts generic image-based post-processing, and it is intuitive and easy to use as viewing distance is the only parameter. Using highly diverse datasets, we show the usefulness of our method across a wide range of typical visualizations.

A TDMA-like Access Scheme with Splitting Request and Transmission for Vehicular Networks

In this paper, we consider safety message transmission in a dense vehicular network. With increasing vehicular network density, the collision rate increases when multiple vehicles transmit safety messages simultaneously. To address this issue, we propose a request-transmission split time division multiple access (TDMA) scheme, referred to as RTS-TDMA. In our scheme, we divide a frame into three phases, i.e., a contention access phase, a broadcast feedback phase, and a contention-free transmission phase. Each vehicle selects a repetition rate according to a given probability distribution and repeats the transmission of its request packet to improve the reliability of the request. In addition, a roadside unit acts as the coordinator and uses a successive interference cancellation technique to resolve request collisions. RTS-TDMA also reduces the request time percentage by containing only the vehicle identity in each request packet. Both theoretical analysis and numerical results verify that the RTS-TDMA scheme can provide higher throughput than the coded slotted ALOHA scheme.

Polarity and spin-orbit coupling induced large interfacial exchange coupling an asymmetric charge transfer in iridate-manganite heterostructure

Charge transfer is of particular importance in manipulating the interface physics in transition-metal oxide heterostructures. In this work, we have fabricated epitaxial bilayers composed of polar 3d LaMnO3 and nonpolar 5d SrIrO3. Systematic magnetic measurements reveal an unexpectedly large exchange bias effect in the bilayer, together with a dramatic enhancement of the coercivity of LaMnO3. Based on first-principles calculations and x-ray absorption spectroscopy measurements, such a strong interfacial magnetic coupling is found closely associated with the polar nature of LaMnO3 and the strong spin-orbit interaction in SrIrO3, which collectively drives an asymmetric interfacial charge transfer and leads to the emergence of an interfacial spin glass state. Our study provides new insight into the charge transfer in transition-metal oxide heterostructures and offers a novel means to tune the interfacial exchange coupling for a variety of device applications.

Interfacial superconductivity induced by single-quintuple-layer Bi$_2$Te$_3$ on top of FeTe forming van-der-Waals heterostructure

We report the first clear observation of interfacial superconductivity on top of FeTe(FT) covered by one quintuple-layer Bi$_2$Te$_3$(BT) forming van-der-Waals heterojunction. Both transport and scanning tunneling spectroscopy measurements confirm the occurrence of superconductivity at a transition temperature T$_c$ = 13~K, when a single-quintuple-layer BT is deposited on the non-superconducting FT surface. The superconductivity gap decays exponentially with the thickness of BT, suggesting it occurs at the BT-FT interface and the proximity length is above 5-6~nm. We also measure the work function's dependence on the thickness of BT, implying a charge transfer may occur at the BT/FT interface to introduce hole doping into the FT layer, which may serve as a possible candidate for the superconducting mechanism. Our BT/FT heterojunction provides a clean system to study the unconventional interfacial superconductivity.

Topological Hall effect in bulk ferromagnet Cr$_2$Te$_3$ embedded with black-phosphorus-like bismuth nanosheets

We implement the molecular beam epitaxy method to embed the black-phosphorus-like bismuth nanosheets into the bulk ferromagnet Cr$_2$Te$_3$. As a typical surfactant, bismuth lowers the surface tensions and mediates the layer-by-layer growth of Cr$_2$Te$_3$. Meanwhile, the bismuth atoms precipitate into black-phosphorus-like nanosheets with the lateral size of several tens of nanometers. In Cr$_2$Te$_3$ embedded with Bi-nanosheets, we observe simultaneously a large topological Hall effect together with the magnetic susceptibility plateau and magnetoresistivity anomaly. As a control experiment, none of these signals is observed in the pristine Cr$_2$Te$_3$ samples. Therefore, the Bi-nanosheets serve as seeds of topological Hall effect induced by non-coplanar magnetic textures planted into Cr$_2$Te$_3$. Our experiments demonstrate a new method to generates a large topological Hall effect by planting strong spin-orbit couplings into the traditional ferromagnet, which may have potential applications in spintronics.

A Hardware-Efficient Hybrid Beamforming Solution for mmWave MIMO Systems

In millimeter wave (mmWave) communication systems, existing hybrid beamforming solutions generally require a large number of high-resolution phase shifters (PSs) to realize analog beamformers, which still suffer from high hardware complexity and power consumption. Targeting at this problem, this article introduces a novel hardware-efficient hybrid precoding/combining architecture, which only employs a limited number of simple phase over-samplers (POSs) and a switch (SW) network to achieve maximum hardware efficiency while maintaining satisfactory spectral efficiency performance. The POS can be realized by a simple circuit and simultaneously outputs several parallel signals with different phases. With the aid of a simple switch network, the analog precoder/combiner is implemented by feeding the signals with appropriate phases to antenna arrays or RF chains. We analyze the design challenges of this POS-SW-based hybrid beamforming architecture and present potential solutions to the fundamental issues, especially the precoder/combiner design and the channel estimation strategy. Simulation results demonstrate that this hardware-efficient structure can achieve comparable spectral efficiency but much higher energy efficiency than that of the traditional structures.

A Fowler-Nordheim Integrator can Track the Density of Prime Numbers

"Does there exist a naturally occurring counting device that might elucidate the hidden structure of prime numbers ?" is a question that has fascinated computer scientists and mathematical physicists for decades. While most recent research in this area have explored the role of the Riemann zeta-function in different formulations of statistical mechanics, condensed matter physics and quantum chaotic systems, the resulting devices (quantum or classical) have only existed in theory or the fabrication of the device has been found to be not scalable to large prime numbers. Here we report for the first time that any hypothetical prime number generator, to our knowledge, has to be a special case of a dynamical system that is governed by the physics of Fowler-Nordheim (FN) quantum-tunneling. In this paper we report how such a dynamical system can be implemented using a counting process that naturally arises from sequential FN tunneling and integration of electrons on a floating-gate (FG) device. The self-compensating physics of the FG device makes the operation reliable and repeatable even when tunneling-currents approach levels below 1 attoamperes. We report measured results from different variants of fabricated prototypes, each of which shows an excellent match with the asymptotic prime number statistics. We also report similarities between the spectral signatures produced by the FN device and the spectral statistics of a hypothetical prime number sequence generator. We believe that the proposed floating-gate device could have future implications in understanding the process that generates prime numbers with applications in security and authentication.

Cost and Actual Causation

I propose the purpose our concept of actual causation serves is minimizing various cost in intervention practice. Actual causation has three features: nonredundant sufficiency, continuity and abnormality; these features correspond to the minimization of exploitative cost, exploratory cost and risk cost in intervention practice. Incorporating these three features, a definition of actual causation is given. I test the definition in 66 causal cases from actual causation literature and show that this definition's application fit intuition better than some other causal modelling based definitions.

A Privacy-preserving Community-based P2P OSNs Using Broadcast Encryption Supporting Recommendation Mechanism

Online Social Networks (OSNs) have become one of the most important activities on the Internet, such as Facebook and Google+. However, security and privacy have become major concerns in existing C/S based OSNs. In this paper, we propose a novel scheme called a Privacy-preserving Community-based P2P OSNs Using Broadcast Encryption Supporting Recommendation Mechanism (PCBE) that supports cross-platform availability in stringent privacy requirements. For the first time, we introduce recommendation mechanism into a privacy-preserving P2P based OSNs, in which we firstly employ the Open Directory Project to generate user interest model. We firstly introduce broadcast encryption into P2P community-based social networks together with reputation mechanism to decrease the system overhead. We formulate the security requirements and design goals for privacy- preserving P2P based OSNs supporting recommendation mechanism. The RESTful web-services help to ensure cross-platform availability and transmission security. As a result, thorough security analysis and performance evaluation on experiments demonstrate that the PCBE scheme indeed accords with our proposed design goals.

The New Multi-Edge Metric-Constrained PEG/QC-PEG Algorithms for Designing the Binary LDPC Codes With Better Cycle-Structures

To obtain a better cycle-structure is still a challenge for the low-density parity-check (LDPC) code design. This paper formulates two metrics firstly so that the progressive edge-growth (PEG) algorithm and the approximate cycle extrinsic message degree (ACE) constrained PEG algorithm are unified into one integrated algorithm, called the metric-constrained PEG algorithm (M-PEGA). Then, as an improvement for the M-PEGA, the multi-edge metric-constrained PEG algorithm (MM-PEGA) is proposed based on two new concepts, the multi-edge local girth and the edge-trials. The MM-PEGA with the edge-trials, say a positive integer $r$, is called the $r$-edge M-PEGA, which constructs each edge of the non-quasi-cyclic (non-QC) LDPC code graph through selecting a check node whose $r$-edge local girth is optimal. In addition, to design the QC-LDPC codes with any predefined valid design parameters, as well as to detect and even to avoid generating the undetectable cycles in the QC-LDPC codes designed by the QC-PEG algorithm, the multi-edge metric constrained QC-PEG algorithm (MM-QC-PEGA) is proposed lastly. It is verified by the simulation results that increasing the edge-trials of the MM-PEGA/MM-QC-PEGA is expected to have a positive effect on the cycle-structures and the error performances of the LDPC codes designed by the MM-PEGA/MM-QC-PEGA.
