Defect screening and load transfer in minimal hard-soft double networks

Double network (DN) materials exhibit anomalous strength and toughness that far exceed the sum of their constituents. While widely exploited, the fundamental physical mechanisms underlying this synergy remain elusive. Here, we show that a minimal three-dimensional model of two coupled, disordered linear-elastic networks is sufficient to capture the essential physics of DN nonlinear mechanics. The model reproduces the full suite of unique mechanical behaviors, including yielding, necking, strain hardening, and the brittle-to-ductile transition. Mechanical contrast between the hard and soft networks drives inter-network load transfer, which screens defects and suppresses stress concentrations in the hard network. By defining a stress-concentration factor, K_sc, we find that the hard-network failure strain scales universally as 1/K_sc, directly bridging microscopic defect screening to macroscopic yielding. We further show that complete defect screening triggers the shift from localized necking to delocalized damage. Furthermore, the stable necking plateau is identified as an energetic selection governed by the balance between potential energy release and irreversible dissipation. These findings reveal that a simple linear-elastic framework can account for the rich nonlinear landscape of DN materials, providing a general principle for designing next-generation tough solids.

Entropy-Driven Preordering Assists Nucleation in Polyethylene

Non-classical two-step nucleation including preordering and crystal nucleation has been widely proposed to challenge the one-step nucleation framework in diverse materials, while what drives preordering has not been explicitly resolved yet. With molecular dynamics simulation, we find that two-step nucleation occurs in polyethylene, during which preordering precedes through the coupling between intrachain conformation and interchain orientation orders. Unexpectedly, preordering is driven by entropy rather than enthalpy, during which the interchain translational entropy gain compensates for the intrachain conformation entropy loss. This entropy-driven mechanism resolves the longstanding puzzle why flexible polymers with high entropy penalty still show high nucleation rate and opens a new perspective for understanding nucleation of synthetic and bio-polymers with conformation and orientation orders.

Challenges and Contributing Factors in the Utilization of Large Language Models (LLMs)

With the development of large language models (LLMs) like the GPT series, their widespread use across various application scenarios presents a myriad of challenges. This review initially explores the issue of domain specificity, where LLMs may struggle to provide precise answers to specialized questions within niche fields. The problem of knowledge forgetting arises as these LLMs might find it hard to balance old and new information. The knowledge repetition phenomenon reveals that sometimes LLMs might deliver overly mechanized responses, lacking depth and originality. Furthermore, knowledge illusion describes situations where LLMs might provide answers that seem insightful but are actually superficial, while knowledge toxicity focuses on harmful or biased information outputs. These challenges underscore problems in the training data and algorithmic design of LLMs. To address these issues, it's suggested to diversify training data, fine-tune models, enhance transparency and interpretability, and incorporate ethics and fairness training. Future technological trends might lean towards iterative methodologies, multimodal learning, model personalization and customization, and real-time learning and feedback mechanisms. In conclusion, future LLMs should prioritize fairness, transparency, and ethics, ensuring they uphold high moral and ethical standards when serving humanity.

Shear banding in monodisperse polymer melt

We performed a series of molecular dynamics simulations on monodisperse polymer melts to investigate the formation of shear banding. Under high shear rates, shear banding occurs, which is accompanied with the entanglement heterogeneity intimately. Interestingly, the same linear relationship between the end-to-end distance $R_{ee}$ and entanglement density $Z$ is observed at homogeneous flow before the onset of shear banding and at shear banding state, where $R_{ee} \sim [ln(W_i^{0.87})- \xi_0]Z$ is proposed as the criterion to describe the dynamic force balance of molecular chain in flow with a high rate. We establish a scaling relation between the disentanglement rate $V_d$ and Weissenberg number $W_i$ as $V_d \sim W_i^{0.87}$ for stable flow in homogeneous shear and shear banding states. Deviating from this relation leads to force imbalance and results in the emergence of shear banding. The formation of shear banding prevents chain from further stretching and disentanglement. The transition from homogeneous shear to shear banding partially dissipates the increased free energy from shear and reduces the free energy of the system.

Ultrahigh ion diffusion in oxide crystal by engineering the interfacial transporter channels

The mass storage and removal in solid conductors always played vital role on the technological applications such as modern batteries, permeation membranes and neuronal computations, which were seriously lying on the ion diffusion and kinetics in bulk lattice. However, the ions transport was kinetically limited by the low diffusional process, which made it a challenge to fabricate applicable conductors with high electronic and ionic conductivities at room temperature. It was known that at essentially all interfaces, the existed space charge layers could modify the charge transport, storage and transfer properties. Thus, in the current study, we proposed an acid solution/WO3/ITO structure and achieved an ultrafast hydrogen transport in WO3 layer by interfacial job-sharing diffusion. In this sandwich structure, the transport pathways of the protons and electrons were spatially separated in acid solution and ITO layer respectively, resulting the pronounced increasing of effective hydrogen diffusion coefficient (Deff) up to 106 times. The experiment and theory simulations also revealed that this accelerated hydrogen transport based on the interfacial job-sharing diffusion was universal and could be extended to other ions and oxide materials as well, which would potentially stimulate systematic studies on ultrafast mixed conductors or faster solid-state electrochemical switching devices in the future.

Entanglement on nucleation barrier of polymer crystal

We propose a theoretical approach to quantitatively account for the role of entanglement in the nucleation of polymer melts, which is the unique feature of polymer differentiated from small molecules. By performing molecular dynamics simulations, we obtain the nucleation barriers of polymer systems with different entanglement densities, which exhibits an opposite trend compared to the prediction of the classic nucleation theory (CNT). To amend the deficiency of the CNT in polymer crystallization, we introduce the entanglement free energy to reflect the role of entanglement in polymer nucleation. Specifically, the polymer nucleation not only involves free energies of monomers inside and on the surface of a nucleus as considered in the CNT, but also affects the entanglement network around the nucleus. Our theoretical approach provides a reasonable interpretation for the unsolved nucleation phenomena of polymers in simulations and experiments.

Mixed displacement-pressure-phase field framework for finite strain fracture of nearly incompressible hyperelastic materials

The favored phase field method (PFM) has encountered challenges in the finite strain fracture modeling of nearly or truly incompressible hyperelastic materials. We identified that the underlying cause lies in the innate contradiction between incompressibility and smeared crack opening. Drawing on the stiffness-degradation idea in PFM, we resolved this contradiction through loosening incompressible constraint of the damaged phase without affecting the incompressibility of intact material. By modifying the perturbed Lagrangian approach, we derived a novel mixed formulation. In numerical aspects, the finite element discretization uses the classical Q1/P0 and high-order P2/P1 schemes, respectively. To ease the mesh distortion at large strains, an adaptive mesh deletion technology is also developed. The validity and robustness of the proposed mixed framework are corroborated by four representative numerical examples. By comparing the performance of Q1/P0 and P2/P1, we conclude that the Q1/P0 formulation is a better choice for finite strain fracture in nearly incompressible cases. Moreover, the numerical examples also show that the combination of the proposed framework and methodology has vast potential in simulating complex peeling and tearing problems

Numerical calculation of free-energy barriers for entangled polymer nucleation

The crystallisation of entangled polymers from their melt is investigated using computer simulation with a coarse-grained model. Using hybrid Monte Carlo simulations enables us to probe the behaviour of long polymer chains. We identify solid-like beads with a centrosymmetry local order parameter and compute the nucleation free-energy barrier at relatively high supercooling with adaptive-bias windowed umbrella sampling. Our results demonstrate that the critical nucleus sizes and the heights of free-energy barriers do not significantly depend on the molecular weight of the polymer; however, the nucleation rate decreases with increasing molecular weight. Moreover, an analysis of the composition of the critical nucleus suggests that intramolecular growth of the nucleated cluster does not contribute significantly to crystallisation for this system.

Spectral self-adaptive absorber/emitter for harvesting energy from the sun and outer space

The sun (~6000 K) and outer space (~3 K) are the original heat source and sink for human beings on Earth. The energy applications of absorbing solar irradiation and harvesting the coldness of outer space for energy utilization have attracted considerable interest from researchers. However, combining these two functions in a static device for continuous energy harvesting is unachievable due to the intrinsic infrared spectral conflict. In this study, we developed spectral self-adaptive absorber/emitter (SSA/E) for daytime photothermal and nighttime radiative sky cooling modes depending on the phase transition of the vanadium dioxide coated layer. A 24-hour day-night test showed that the fabricated SSA/E has continuous energy harvesting ability and improved overall energy utilization performance, thus showing remarkable potential in future energy applications.

An adaptive edge-based smoothed finite element method (ES-FEM) for phase-field modeling of fractures at large deformations

This work presents the Griffith-type phase-field formation at large deformation in the framework of adaptive edge-based smoothed finite element method (ES-FEM) for the first time. Therein the phase-field modeling of fractures has attracted widespread interest by virtue of its outstanding performance in dealing with complex cracks. The ES-FEM is an excellent member of the S-FEM family developed in combination with meshless ideas and finite element method (FEM), which is characterized by higher accuracy, softer stiffness, and insensitive to mesh distortion. Given that, the advantages of the phase-field method (PFM) and ES-FEM are fully combined by the approach proposed in this paper. With the costly computational overhead of PFM and ES-FEM in mind, a well-designed multi-level adaptive mesh strategy was developed, which considerably improved the computational efficiency. Furthermore, the detailed numerical implementation for the coupling of PFM and ES-FEM is outlined. Several representative numerical examples were recalculated based on the proposed method, and its effectiveness is verified by comparison with the results in experiments and literature. In particular, an experiment in which cracks deflected in rubber due to impinging on a weak interface was firstly reproduced.

Flow-induced Density Fluctuation assisted Nucleation in Polyethylene

The nucleation process of polyethylene under quiescent and shear flow conditions are comparatively studied with all_atom molecular dynamical simulations. At both conditions, nucleation are demonstrated to be two_step processes, which, however, proceed via different intermediate orders. Quiescent nucleation is assisted by local structure order coupling conformational and local rotational symmetric orderings, while flow_induced nucleation is promoted by density fluctuation, which is a coupling effect of conformational and orientation orderings. Flow drives the transformation from flexible chains to rigid conformational ordered segments and circumvents the entropic penalty, which is the most peculiar and rate_limited step in polymer crystallization. Current work suggests that flow accelerates nucleation in orders of magnitude is not simply due to flow_induced entropic reduction of melt as early models proposed, which is mainly attributed to the different kinetic pathway via conformational/orientational ordering_density fluctuation_nucleation.

Local Structure Order Assisted Two-step Crystal Nucleation in Polyethylene

Homogeneous nucleation process of polyethylene (PE) is studied with full-atom molecular dynamic simulation. To account the complex shape with low symmetry and the peculiar intra-chain conformational order of polymer, we introduce a shape descriptor OCB coupling conformational order and inter-chain rotational symmetry, which is able to differentiate hexagonal and orthorhombic clusters from melt. With the shape descriptor OCB, we find that coupling between conformational and inter-chain rotational orderings results in the formation of hexagonal clusters first, which is dynamic in nature. Whilst nucleation of orthorhombic structure occurs inside of hexagonal clusters later, which proceeds via the coalescence of neighboring hexagonal clusters rather than standard stepwise growth process. This demonstrates that nucleation of PE crystal is a two-step process with the assistance of OCB order, which is different from early models for polymer crystallization but similar with that proposed for spherical 'atoms' like colloid and metal.

Interference Reduction in Multi-Cell Massive MIMO Systems I: Large-Scale Fading Precoding and Decoding

A wireless massive MIMO system entails a large number (tens or hundreds) of base station antennas serving a much smaller number of users, with large gains in spectral-efficiency and energy-efficiency compared with conventional MIMO technology. Until recently it was believed that in multi-cellular massive MIMO system, even in the asymptotic regime, as the number of service antennas tends to infinity, the performance is limited by directed inter-cellular interference. This interference results from unavoidable re-use of reverse-link training sequences (pilot contamination) by users in different cells. We devise a new concept that leads to the effective elimination of inter-cell interference in massive MIMO systems. This is achieved by outer multi-cellular precoding, which we call Large-Scale Fading Precoding (LSFP). The main idea of LSFP is that each base station linearly combines messages aimed to users from different cells that re-use the same training sequence. Crucially, the combining coefficients depend only on the slow-fading coefficients between the users and the base stations. Each base station independently transmits its LSFP-combined symbols using conventional linear precoding that is based on estimated fast-fading coefficients. Further, we derive estimates for downlink and uplink SINRs and capacity lower bounds for the case of massive MIMO systems with LSFP and a finite number of base station antennas.

Interference Reduction in Multi-Cell Massive MIMO Systems II: Downlink Analysis for a Finite Number of Antennas

Sharing global channel information at base stations (BSs) is commonly assumed for downlink multi-cell precoding. In the context of massive multi-input multi-output (MIMO) systems where each BS is equipped with a large number of antennas, sharing instant fading channel coefficients consumes a large amount of resource. To consider practically implementable methods, we study in this paper interference reduction based on precoding using the large-scale fading coefficients that depend on the path-loss model and are independent of a specific antenna. We focus on the downlink multi-cell precoding designs when each BS is equipped with a practically finite number of antennas. In this operation regime, pilot contamination is not the dominant source of interference, and mitigation of all types of interference is required. This paper uses an optimization approach to design precoding methods for equal qualities of service (QoS) to all users in the network, i.e.,maximizing the minimum signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratios (SINRs) among all users. The formulated optimization is proved to be quasi-convex, and can be solved optimally. We also propose low-complexity suboptimal algorithms through uplink and downlink duality. Simulation results show that the proposed precoding methods improve 5% outage rate for more than 1000 times, compared to other known interference mitigation techniques.

Maximum-rate Transmission with Improved Diversity Gain for Interference Networks

Interference alignment (IA) was shown effective for interference management to improve transmission rate in terms of the degree of freedom (DoF) gain. On the other hand, orthogonal space-time block codes (STBCs) were widely used in point-to-point multi-antenna channels to enhance transmission reliability in terms of the diversity gain. In this paper, we connect these two ideas, i.e., IA and space-time block coding, to improve the designs of alignment precoders for multi-user networks. Specifically, we consider the use of Alamouti codes for IA because of its rate-one transmission and achievability of full diversity in point-to-point systems. The Alamouti codes protect the desired link by introducing orthogonality between the two symbols in one Alamouti codeword, and create alignment at the interfering receiver. We show that the proposed alignment methods can maintain the maximum DoF gain and improve the ergodic mutual information in the long-term regime, while increasing the diversity gain to 2 in the short-term regime. The presented examples of interference networks have two antennas at each node and include the two-user X channel, the interferring multi-access channel (IMAC), and the interferring broadcast channel (IBC).

Multi-Antenna System Design with Bright Transmitters and Blind Receivers

This paper considers a scenario for multi-input multi-output (MIMO) communication systems when perfect channel state information at the transmitter (CSIT) is given while the equivalent channel state information at the receiver (CSIR) is not available. Such an assumption is valid for the downlink multi-user MIMO systems with linear precoders that depend on channels to all receivers. We propose a concept called dual systems with zero-forcing designs based on the duality principle, originally proposed to relate Gaussian multi-access channels (MACs) and Gaussian broadcast channels (BCs). For the two-user N*2 MIMO BC with N antennas at the transmitter and two antennas at each of the receivers, we design a downlink interference cancellation (IC) transmission scheme using the dual of uplink MAC systems employing IC methods. The transmitter simultaneously sends two precoded Alamouti codes, one for each user. Each receiver can zero-force the unintended user's Alamouti codes and decouple its own data streams using two simple linear operations independent of CSIR. Analysis shows that the proposed scheme achieves a diversity gain of 2(N-1) for equal energy constellations with short-term power and rate constraints. Power allocation between two users can also be performed, and it improves the array gain but not the diversity gain. Numerical results demonstrate that the bit error rate of the downlink IC scheme has a substantial gain compared to the block diagonalization method, which requires global channel information at each node.

Short-term Performance Limits of MIMO Systems with Side Information at the Transmitter

The fundamental performance limits of space-time block code (STBC) designs when perfect channel information is available at the transmitter (CSIT) are studied in this report. With CSIT, the transmitter can perform various techniques such as rate adaption, power allocation, or beamforming. Previously, the exploration of these fundamental results assumed long-term constraints, for example, channel codes can have infinite decoding delay, and power or rate is normalized over infinite channel-uses. With long-term constraints, the transmitter can operate at the rate lower than the instantaneous mutual information and error-free transmission can be supported. In this report, we focus on the performance limits of short-term behavior for STBC systems. We assume that the system has block power constraint, block rate constraint, and finite decoding delay. With these constraints, although the transmitter can perform rate adaption, power control, or beamforming, we show that decoding-error is unavoidable. In the high SNR regime, the diversity gain is upperbounded by the product of the number of transmit antennas, receive antennas, and independent fading block channels that messages spread over. In other words, fading cannot be completely combatted with short-term constraints. The proof is based on a sphere-packing argument.

Multi-Source Transmission for Wireless Relay Networks with Linear Complexity

This paper considers transmission schemes in multi-access relay networks (MARNs) where $J$ single-antenna sources send independent information to one $N$-antenna destination through one $M$-antenna relay. For complexity considerations, we propose a linear framework, where the relay linearly transforms its received signals to generate the forwarded signals without decoding and the destination uses its multi-antennas to fully decouple signals from different sources before decoding, by which the decoding complexity is linear in the number of sources. To achieve a high symbol rate, we first propose a scheme called DSTC-ICRec in which all sources' information streams are concurrently transmitted in both the source-relay link and the relay-destination link. In this scheme, distributed space-time coding (DSTC) is applied at the relay, which satisfies the linear constraint. DSTC also allows the destination to conduct the zero-forcing interference cancellation (IC) scheme originally proposed for multi-antenna systems to fully decouple signals from different sources. Our analysis shows that the symbol rate of DSTC-ICRec is $1/2$ symbols/source/channel use and the diversity gain of the scheme is upperbounded by $M-J+1$. To achieve a higher diversity gain, we propose another scheme called TDMA-ICRec in which the sources time-share the source-relay link. The relay coherently combines the signals on its antennas to maximize the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of each source, then concurrently forwards all sources' information. The destination performs zero-forcing IC. It is shown through both analysis and simulation that when $N \ge 2J-1$, TDMA-ICRec achieves the same maximum diversity gain as the full TDMA scheme in which the information stream from each source is assigned to an orthogonal channel in both links, but with a higher symbol rate.
