From finite to infinite length modules over tame hereditary algebras

A self-contained introduction to infinite dimensional representations over a tame hereditary algebra is provided, assuming a basic knowledge of the category of finite dimensional representations. This includes a complete description of all pure-injective modules. Of particular interest are the torsionfree divisible modules, which are precisely the direct sums of copies of the unique generic module.

Fishing for complements

Given a presilting object in a triangulated category, we find necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of a complement. This is done both for classic (pre)silting objects and for large (pre)silting objects. The key technique is the study of associated co-t-structures. As a consequence of our techniques we recover some known cases of the existence of complements, including for derived categories of some hereditary abelian categories and for silting-discrete algebras. Moreover, we also show that a finite-dimensional algebra is silting discrete if and only if every bounded large silting complex is equivalent to a compact one.

Torsion pairs via cosilting mutation

For a left artinian ring A, we study the lattice torsA of torsion pairs in the category of finitely generated A-modules by considering an isomorphic lattice formed by certain closed sets in a topological space associated to A, the Ziegler spectrum of the unbounded derived category of ModA. Torsion pairs in torsA turn out to be adjacent if and only if the associated closed sets are related by an operation which is induced by mutation of cosilting complexes. We describe this operation from several perspectives and present a number of applications in the case when A is a finite dimensional algebra.

Mutation of torsion pairs for finite-dimensional algebras

We study the lattice $\mathbf{tors}(A)$ of torsion pairs in the category $\mathrm{mod}(A)$ of finitely generated modules over an artinian ring $A$. It was shown by the authors in previous work that $\mathbf{tors}(A)$ is isomorphic to a lattice formed by certain closed sets, called maximal rigid, in the Ziegler spectrum of the unbounded derived category $\mathrm{D}(A)$ of $A$. Moreover, the structure of this lattice is described by an operation on maximal rigid sets which encompasses (the dual of) silting mutation. In this paper we provide an explicit description of this operation and we discuss how it is reflected in the lattice $\mathbf{tors}(A)$. We establish a bijection between the wide intervals in $\mathbf{tors}(A)$ and the closed rigid sets in the Ziegler spectrum of $\mathrm{D}(A)$. Moreover, we show that the arrows in the Hasse quiver of $\mathbf{tors}(A)$ correspond to the closed rigid sets that are almost complete, or equivalently, that can be completed to a maximal rigid set in exactly two ways. Our results are most interesting in the case when $A$ is a finite dimensional algebra. In fact, we generalise results by Adachi, Iyama and Reiten, with an important difference: not every point in a maximal rigid set is mutable. We use the topology on the Ziegler spectrum to determine the mutable points. In the last section of the paper we illustrate our results by the example of a finite dimensional algebra arising from a triangulation of an annulus.

Endomorphism algebras of silting complexes

We consider endomorphism algebras of $n$-term silting complexes in derived categories of hereditary algebras, and we show that the module category of such an endomorphism algebra has a separated $n$-section. For $n=3$ we obtain a trisection in the sense of [2].

Simples in a cotilting heart

Every cotilting module over a ring R induces a t-structure with a Grothendieck heart in the derived category D(Mod R). We determine the simple objects in this heart and their injective envelopes, combining torsion-theoretic aspects with methods from the model theory of modules and Auslander-Reiten theory.

Torsion pairs via the Ziegler spectrum

We establish a bijection between torsion pairs in the category of finite-dimensional modules over a finite-dimensional algebra A and pairs (Z, I) formed by a closed rigid set Z in the Ziegler spectrum of A and a set I of indecomposable injective A-modules. This can be regarded as an extension of a result from $τ$-tilting theory which parametrises the functorially finite torsion pairs over A. We also obtain a one-one-correspondence between finite-dimensional bricks and certain (possibly infinite-dimensional) indecomposable modules satisfying a rigidity condition. Our results also hold when A is an artinian ring.

Wide coreflective subcategories and torsion pairs

We revisit a construction of wide subcategories going back to work of Ingalls and Thomas. To a torsion pair in the category $ R\operatorname{-}\operatorname{mod}$ of finitely presented modules over a left artinian ring $R$, we assign two wide subcategories in the category $ R\operatorname{-}\operatorname{Mod}$ of all $R$-modules and describe them explicitly in terms of an associated cosilting module. It turns out that these subcategories are coreflective, and we address the question of which wide coreflective subcategories can be obtained in this way. Over a tame hereditary algebra, they are precisely the categories which are perpendicular to collections of pure-injective modules.

Mutation and torsion pairs

Mutation of compact silting objects is a fundamental operation in the representation theory of finite-dimensional algebras due to its connections to cluster theory and to the lattice of torsion pairs in module or derived categories. In this paper we develop a theory of mutation in the broader framework of silting or cosilting t-structures in triangulated categories. We show that mutation of pure-injective cosilting objects encompasses the classical concept of mutation for compact silting complexes. As an application we prove that any minimal inclusion of torsion classes in the category of finitely generated modules over an artinian ring corresponds to an irreducible mutation. This generalises a well-known result for functorially finite torsion classes.

Parametrizing torsion pairs in derived categories

We investigate parametrizations of compactly generated t-structures, or more generally, t-structures with a definable coaisle, in the unbounded derived category D(Mod-A) of a ring A. To this end, we provide a construction of t-structures from chains in the lattice of ring epimorphisms starting in A, which is a natural extension of the construction of compactly generated t-structures from chains of subsets of the Zariski spectrum known for the commutative noetherian case. We also provide constructions of silting and cosilting objects in D(Mod-A). This leads us to classification results over some classes of commutative rings and over finite dimensional hereditary algebras.

Minimal silting modules and ring extensions

Ring epimorphisms often induce silting modules and cosilting modules, termed minimal silting or minimal cosilting. The aim of this paper is twofold. Firstly, we determine the minimal tilting and minimal cotilting modules over a tame hereditary algebra. In particular, we show that a large cotilting module is minimal if and only if it has an adic module as a direct summand. Secondly, we discuss the behaviour of minimality under ring extensions. We show that minimal cosilting modules over a commutative noetherian ring extend to minimal cosilting modules along any flat ring epimorphism. Similar results are obtained for commutative rings of small homological dimension.

Partial silting objects and smashing subcategories

We study smashing subcategories of a triangulated category with coproducts via silting theory. Our main result states that for derived categories of dg modules over a non-positive differential graded ring, every compactly generated localising subcategory is generated by a partial silting object. In particular, every such smashing subcategory admits a silting t-structure.

Flat ring epimorphisms and universal localisations of commutative rings

We study different types of localisations of a commutative noetherian ring. More precisely, we provide criteria to decide: (a) if a given flat ring epimorphism is a universal localisation in the sense of Cohn and Schofield; and (b) when such universal localisations are classical rings of fractions. In order to find such criteria, we use the theory of support and we analyse the specialisation closed subset associated to a flat ring epimorphism. In case the underlying ring is locally factorial or of Krull dimension one, we show that all flat ring epimorphisms are universal localisations. Moreover, it turns out that an answer to the question of when universal localisations are classical depends on the structure of the Picard group. We furthermore discuss the case of normal rings, for which the divisor class group plays an essential role to decide if a given flat ring epimorphism is a universal localisation. Finally, we explore several (counter)examples which highlight the necessity of our assumptions.

Silting objects

We give an overview of recent developments in silting theory. After an introduction on torsion pairs in triangulated categories, we discuss and compare different notions of silting and explain the interplay with t-structures and co-t-structures. We then focus on silting and cosilting objects in a triangulated category with coproducts and study the case of the unbounded derived category of a ring. We close the survey with some classification results over commutative noetherian rings and silting-discrete algebras.

On the abundance of silting modules

Silting modules are abundant. Indeed, they parametrise the definable torsion classes over a noetherian ring, and the hereditary torsion pairs of finite type over a commutative ring. Also the universal localisations of a hereditary ring, or of a finite dimensional algebra of finite representation type, can be parametrised by silting modules. In these notes, we give a brief introduction to the fairly recent concepts of silting and cosilting module, and we explain the classification results mentioned above.

A characterisation of $τ$-tilting finite algebras

We prove that a finite dimensional algebra is $τ$-tilting finite if and only if it does not admit large silting modules. Moreover, we show that for a $τ$-tilting finite algebra $A$ there is a bijection between isomorphism classes of basic support $τ$-tilting (that is, finite dimensional silting) modules and equivalence classes of ring epimorphisms $A\longrightarrow B$ with ${\rm Tor}_1^A(B,B)=0$. It follows that a finite dimensional algebra is $τ$-tilting finite if and only if there are only finitely many equivalence classes of such ring epimorphisms.

Torsion pairs in silting theory

In the setting of compactly generated triangulated categories, we show that the heart of a (co)silting t-structure is a Grothendieck category if and only if the (co)silting object satisfies a purity assumption. Moreover, in the cosilting case the previous conditions are related to the coaisle of the t-structure being a definable subcategory. If we further assume our triangulated category to be algebraic, it follows that the heart of any nondegenerate compactly generated t-structure is a Grothendieck category.

Approximations and Mittag-Leffler conditions --- the applications

A classic result by Bass says that the class of all projective modules is covering, if and only if it is closed under direct limits. Enochs extended the if-part by showing that every class of modules $\mathcal C$, which is precovering and closed under direct limits, is covering, and asked whether the converse is true. We employ the tools developed in [18] and give a positive answer when $\mathcal C = \mathcal A$, or $\mathcal C$ is the class of all locally $\mathcal A ^{\leq ω}$-free modules, where $\mathcal A$ is any class of modules fitting in a cotorsion pair $(\mathcal A, \mathcal B)$ such that $\mathcal B$ is closed under direct limits. This setting includes all cotorsion pairs and classes of locally free modules arising in (infinite-dimensional) tilting theory. We also consider two particular applications: to pure-semisimple rings, and artin algebras of infinite representation type.
