Constraining the Skyrme effective interactions and the neutron skin thickness of nuclei using isospin diffusion data from heavy ion collisions

Recent analysis of the isospin diffusion data from heavy-ion collisions based on an isospin- and momentum-dependent transport model with in-medium nucleon-nucleon cross sections has led to the extraction of a value of $L=88\pm 25$ MeV for the slope of the nuclear symmetry energy at saturation density. This imposes stringent constraints on both the parameters in the Skyrme effective interactions and the neutron skin thickness of heavy nuclei. Among the 21 sets of Skyrme interactions commonly used in nuclear structure studies, the 4 sets SIV, SV, G$_σ$, and R$_σ$ are found to give $L$ values that are consistent with the extracted one. Further study on the correlations between the thickness of the neutron skin in finite nuclei and the nuclear matter symmetry energy in the Skyrme Hartree-Fock approach leads to predicted thickness of the neutron skin of $0.22\pm 0.04$ fm for $^{208}$Pb, $0.29\pm 0.04$ fm for $^{132}$Sn, and $0.22\pm 0.04$ fm for $^{124}$Sn.

Evolution of the symmetry energy of hot neutron-rich matter formed in heavy-ion reactions

It is shown that the experimentally observed decrease of the nuclear symmetry energy with the increasing centrality or the excitation energy in isotopic scaling analyses of heavy-ion reactions can be well understood analytically within a degenerate Fermi gas model. The evolution of the symmetry energy is found to be mainly due to the variation in the freeze-out density rather than temperature. The isoscaling analyses are useful for probing the interaction part of the nuclear symmetry energy, provided that both the freeze-out temperature and density of the fragments can be inferred simultaneously from the experiments.

$ϕ$ and $Ω$ production in relativistic heavy ion collisions in a dynamical quark coalescence model

Based on the phase-space information obtained from a multi-phase transport model within the string melting scenario for strange and antistrange quarks, we study the yields and transverse momentum spectra of $ϕ$ mesons and $Ω$ ($Ω^{-}+\barΩ^{+}$) baryons as well as their anisotropic flows in Au+Au collisions at RHIC using a dynamical quark coalescence model that includes the effect due to quark phase-space distributions inside hadrons. With current quark masses and fixing the $ϕ$ and $Ω$ radii from fitting measured yields, we first study the ratio of the yield of $Ω$ baryons to that of $ϕ$ mesons as well as their elliptic and fourth-order flows as functions of their transverse momentum. How the elliptic and fourth-order flows of $ϕ$ mesons and $Ω$ baryons are related to those of strange and antistrange quarks is then examined. The dependence of above results on $ϕ$ and $Ω$ radii as well as on the strange quark mass is also studied.

Single and double pi^{-}/pi^{+} ratios in heavy-ion reactions as probes of the high-density behavior of the nuclear symmetry energy

Based on an isospin- and momentum-dependent hadronic transport model IBUU04, effects of the nuclear symmetry energy on the single and double pi^{-}/pi^{+}ratios in central reactions of ^{132}Sn+^{124}Sn and ^{112}Sn+^{112}Sn at a beam energy of 400 MeV/nucleon are studied. It is found that around the Coulomb peak of the single pi^{-}/pi^{+} ratio the double pi^{-}/pi^{+} ratio taken from the two isotopic reactions retains about the same sensitivity to the density dependence of nuclear symmetry energy. Because the double pi^{-}/pi^{+}ratio can reduce significantly the systematic errors, it is thus a more effective probe for the high-density behavior of the nuclear symmetry energy.

System size dependence of elliptic flows in relativistic heavy-ion collisions

The elliptic flows in both Cu+Cu and Au+Au collisions at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider are studied in a multi-phase transport model. For both collisions at same reduced impact parameter and minimum bias collisions, the elliptic flow of partons in Cu+Cu collisions is about a factor of three smaller than that in Au+Au collisions at same energy. The reduction factor is similar to the ratio of the sizes of the two colliding systems and is also related to the combined effects of initial energy density and spatial elliptic deformation in the two reactions. A similar system size dependence is also seen in the elliptic flow of charged hadrons from minimum bias collisions.

Anisotropic flow in Cu+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=200$ GeV

The anisotropic flow of charged hadrons in asymmetric Cu+Au collisions at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider is studied in a multi-phase transport model. Compared with previous results for symmetric Au+Au collisions, charged hadrons produced around midrapidity in asymmetric collisions are found to have a stronger directed flow $v_{1}$ and their elliptic flow $% v_{2} $ is also more sensitive to the parton scattering cross section. While higher-order flows $v_{3}$ and $v_{4}$ are small at all rapidities, both $% v_{1}$ and $v_{2}$ in these collisions are appreciable and show an asymmetry in forward and backward rapidities.

Probing the equation of state of neutron-rich matter with intermediate energy heavy-ion collisions

Nuclear reactions induced by stable and/or radioactive neutron-rich nuclei provide the opportunity to pin down the equation of state of neutron-rich matter, especially the density ($ρ$) dependence of its isospin-dependent part, i.e., the nuclear symmetry energy $E_{\rm sym}$. A conservative constraint, $32(ρ/ρ_{0})^{0.7} < E_{\rm sym}(ρ) < 32(ρ/ρ_{0})^{1.1}$, around the nuclear matter saturation density $ρ_0$ has recently been obtained from the isospin diffusion data in intermediate energy heavy-ion collisions. We review this exciting result and discuss its consequences and implications on nuclear effective interactions, radii and cooling mechanisms of neutron stars.

Nuclear matter symmetry energy and the neutron skin thickness of heavy nuclei

Correlations between the thickness of the neutron skin in finite nuclei and the nuclear matter symmetry energy are studied in the Skyrme Hartree-Fock model. From the most recent analysis of the isospin diffusion data in heavy-ion collisions based on an isospin- and momentum-dependent transport model with in-medium nucleon-nucleon cross sections, a value of $L=88\pm 25$ MeV for the slope of the nuclear symmetry energy at saturation density is extracted, and this imposes stringent constraints on both the parameters in the Skyrme effective interactions and the neutron skin thickness of heavy nuclei. Predicted thickness of the neutron skin is $0.22\pm 0.04$ fm for $% ^{208}$Pb, $0.29\pm 0.04$ fm for $^{132}$Sn, and $0.22\pm 0.04$ fm for $% ^{124}$Sn.

High-energy behavior of the nuclear symmetry potential in asymmetric nuclear matter

Using the relativistic impulse approximation with empirical NN scattering amplitude and the nuclear scalar and vector densities from the relativistic mean-field theory, we evaluate the Dirac optical potential for neutrons and protons in asymmetric nuclear matter. From the resulting Schrö% dinger-equivalent potential, the high energy behavior of the nuclear symmetry potential is studied. We find that the symmetry potential at fixed baryon density is essentially constant once the nucleon kinetic energy is greater than about 500 MeV. Moreover, for such high energy nucleon, the symmetry potential is slightly negative below a baryon density of about $% ρ=0.22$ fm$^{-3}$ and then increases almost linearly to positive values at high densities. Our results thus provide an important constraint on the energy and density dependence of nuclear symmetry potential in asymmetric nuclear matter.

Double neutron/proton ratio of nucleon emissions in isotopic reaction systems as a robust probe of nuclear symmetry energy

The double neutron/proton ratio of nucleon emissions taken from two reaction systems using four isotopes of the same element, namely, the neutron/proton ratio in the neutron-rich system over that in the more symmetric system, has the advantage of reducing systematically the influence of the Coulomb force and the normally poor efficiencies of detecting low energy neutrons. The double ratio thus suffers less systematic errors. Within the IBUU04 transport model the double neutron/proton ratio is shown to have about the same sensitivity to the density dependence of nuclear symmetry energy as the single neutron/proton ratio in the neutron-rich system involved. The double neutron/proton ratio is therefore more useful for further constraining the symmetry energy of neutron-rich matter.

Charm elliptic flow in Au+Au collisions at RHIC

Using the perturbative method for the simulation of charmed particles, the dynamical origin of charm quark elliptic flow is studied in the framework of a multi-phase transport (AMPT) model. Besides the expected ordering relative to that of light quarks according to quark masses, charm quark elliptic flow is seen to be sensitive to the parton scattering cross section. To describe the observed large elliptic flow of electrons from the decay of charmed mesons, a charm quark elastic scattering cross section much larger than that estimated from the perturbative QCD is required.

Nucleon-nucleon cross sections in neutron-rich matter and isospin transport in heavy-ion reactions at intermediate energies

Nucleon-nucleon (NN) cross sections are evaluated in neutron-rich matter using a scaling model according to nucleon effective masses. It is found that the in-medium NN cross sections are not only reduced but also have a different isospin dependence compared with the free-space ones. Because of the neutron-proton effective mass splitting the difference between nn and pp scattering cross sections increases with the increasing isospin asymmetry of the medium. Within the transport model IBUU04, the in-medium NN cross sections are found to influence significantly the isospin transport in heavy-ion reactions. With the in-medium NN cross sections, a symmetry energy of $E_{sym}(ρ)\approx 31.6(ρ/ρ_{0})^{0.69}$ was found most acceptable compared with both the MSU isospin diffusion data and the presently acceptable neutron-skin thickness in $^{208}$Pb. The isospin dependent part $K_{asy}(ρ_{0})$ of isobaric nuclear incompressibility was further narrowed down to $-500\pm 50$ MeV. The possibility of determining simultaneously the in-medium NN cross sections and the symmetry energy was also studied. The proton transverse flow, or even better the combined transverse flow of neutrons and protons, can be used as a probe of the in-medium NN cross sections without much hindrance from the uncertainties of the symmetry energy.

Charm elliptic flow at RHIC

Charm elliptic flow in heavy ion collisions at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) is studied in a multiphase transport model. Assuming that the cross section for charm quark scattering with other light quarks is the same as that between light quarks, we find that both charm and light quark elliptic flows are sensitive to the value of the cross section. Compared to that of light quarks, the elliptic flow of charm quarks is smaller at low transverse momentum but approaches comparable values at high transverse momentum. Similar features are seen in the elliptic flow of charmed mesons as well as that of the electrons from their semileptonic decays when the charmed mesons are produced from quark coalescence during hadronization of the partonic matter. To describe the large electron elliptic flow observed in available experimental data requires a charm quark scattering cross section that is much larger than that given by the perturbative QCD.

A Transport Model for Nuclear Reactions Induced by Radioactive Beams

Major ingredients of an isospin and momentum dependent transport model for nuclear reactions induced by radioactive beams are outlined. Within the IBUU04 version of this model we study several experimental probes of the equation of state of neutron-rich matter, especially the density dependence of the nuclear symmetry energy. Comparing with the recent experimental data from NSCL/MSU on isospin diffusion, we found a nuclear symmetry energy of $% E_{sym}(ρ)\approx 31.6(ρ/ρ_{0})^{1.05}$ at subnormal densities. Predictions on several observables sensitive to the density dependence of the symmetry energy at supranormal densities accessible at GSI and the planned Rare Isotope Accelerator (RIA) are also made.

Progress Towards Determining the Density Dependence of the Nuclear Symmetry Energy Using Heavy-Ion Reactions

The latest development in determining the density dependence of the nuclear symmetry energy using heavy-ion collisions is reviewed. Within the IBUU04 version of an isospin- and momentum-dependent transport model using a modified Gogny effective interaction, recent experimental data from NSCL/MSU on isospin diffusion are found to be consistent with a nuclear symmetry energy of $E_{sym}(ρ)\approx 31.6(ρ/ρ_{0})^{1.05}$ at subnormal densities. Predictions on several observables sensitive to the density dependence of the symmetry energy at supranormal densities accessible at GSI and the planned Rare Isotope Accelerator (RIA) are also made.

Determination of the stiffness of the nuclear symmetry energy from isospin diffusion

With an isospin- and momentum-dependent transport model, we find that the degree of isospin diffusion in heavy ion collisions at intermediate energies is affected by both the stiffness of the nuclear symmetry energy and the momentum dependence of the nucleon potential. Using a momentum dependence derived from the Gogny effective interaction, recent experimental data from NSCL/MSU on isospin diffusion are shown to be consistent with a nuclear symmetry energy given by $E_{\text{sym}}(ρ)\approx 31.6(ρ/ρ_{0})^{1.05} $ at subnormal densities. This leads to a significantly constrained value of about -550 MeV for the isospin-dependent part of the isobaric incompressibility of isospin asymmetric nuclear matter.

Pseudorapidity dependence of anisotropic flows in relativistic heavy-ion collisions

The pseudorapidity dependence of anisotropic flows $v_{1}$, $v_{2}$, $v_{3}$ , and $v_{4}$ of charged hadrons in heavy-ion collisions at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider is studied in a multi-phase transport model. We find that while the string melting scenario, in which hadrons that are expected to be formed from initial strings are converted to their valence quarks and antiquarks, can explain the measured $p_{T}$-dependence of $v_{2}$ and $ v_{4} $ of charged hadrons at midrapidity with a parton scattering cross section of about 10 \textrm{mb}, the scenario without string melting reproduces better the recent data on $v_{1}$ and $v_{2}$ of charged hadrons at large pseudorapidity in Au + Au collisions at $\sqrt{s}=200$ AGeV . Our results thus suggest that a partonic matter is formed during early stage of relativistic heavy ion collisions only around midrapidity and that strings remain dominant at large rapidities. The $p_{T}$-dependence of $v_{1} $, $v_{2}$, $v_{3}$ and $v_{4}$ for charged hadrons at forward pseudorapidity is also predicted, and we find that while $v_{1}$ and $v_{2}$ are appreciable at large pseudorapidity the higher-order anisotropic flows $v_{3}$ and $v_{4} $ are essentially zero.
