Large-mass neutron stars with hyperonization

Within a density-dependent relativistic mean-field model using in-medium meson-hadron coupling constants and meson masses, we explore effects of in-medium hyperon interactions on properties of neutron stars. It is found that the hyperonic constituents in large-mass neutron stars can not be simply ruled out, while the recently measured mass of the millisecond pulsar J1614-2230 can constrain significantly the in-medium hyperon interactions. Moreover, effects of nuclear symmetry energy on hyperonization in neutron stars are also discussed.

Contributions of hyperon-hyperon scattering to subthreshold cascade production in heavy ion collisions

Using a gauged flavor SU(3)-invariant hadronic Lagrangian, we calculate the cross sections for the strangeness-exchange reactions YY to NΞ(Y=Λ, Σ) in the Born approximation. These cross sections are then used in the Relativistic Vlasov-Uehling-Uhlenbeck (RVUU) transport model to study Ξproduction in Ar+KCl collisions at incident energy of 1.76A GeV and impact parameter b=3.5 fm. We find that including the contributions of hyperon-hyperon scattering channels strongly enhances the yield of Ξ, leading to the abundance ratio Ξ^{-}/(Λ+Σ^{0})=3.38E-3, which is essentially consistent with the recently measured value of $(5.6 \pm 1.2_{-1.7}^{+1.8})\times 10^{-3}$ by the HADES collaboration at GSI.

Lorentz covariant nucleon self-energy decomposition of the nuclear symmetry energy

Using the Hugenholtz-Van Hove theorem, we derive analytical expressions for the nuclear symmetry energy $E_{sym}(ρ)$ and its density slope $L(ρ)$ in terms of the Lorentz covariant nucleon self-energies in isospin asymmetric nuclear matter. These general expressions are useful for determining the density dependence of the symmetry energy and understanding the Lorentz structure and the microscopic origin of the nuclear symmetry energy in relativistic covariant formulism. As an example, we analyze the Lorentz covariant nucleon self-energy decomposition of $E_{sym}(ρ)$ and $L(ρ)$ and derive the corresponding analytical expressions within the nonlinear $σ$-$ω$-$ρ$-$δ$ relativistic mean field model.

Nuclear matter fourth-order symmetry energy in the relativistic mean field models

Within the nonlinear relativistic mean field model, we derive the analytical expression of the nuclear matter fourth-order symmetry energy $E_{sym,4}(ρ)$. Based on two accurately calibrated interactions FSUGold and IU-FSU, our results show that the value of $E_{sym,4}(ρ)$ at normal nuclear matter density $ρ_{0}$ is generally less than 1 MeV, confirming the empirical parabolic approximation to the equation of state for asymmetric nuclear matter at $ρ_{0}$. On the other hand, we find that the $E_{sym,4}(ρ)$ may become nonnegligible at high densities. Furthermore, the analytical form of the $E_{sym,4}(ρ)$ provides the possibility to study the higher-order effects on the isobaric incompressibility of asymmetric nuclear matter, i.e., $K_{sat}(δ)=K_{0}+K_{sat,2}δ^{2}+K_{sat,4}δ^{4}+\mathcal{O}(δ^{6})$ where $δ=(ρ_{n}-ρ_{p})/ρ$ is the isospin asymmetry, and we find that the value of $K_{sat,4}$ is generally small compared with that of the $K_{sat,2}$. In addition, we study the effects of the $E_{sym,4}(ρ)$ on the proton fraction $x_{p}$ and the core-crust transition density $ρ_{t}$ and pressure $P_{t}$ in neutron stars. Interestingly, we find that, compared with the results from the empirical parabolic approximation, including the $E_{sym,4}(ρ)$ contribution can significantly enhance the $x_{p}$ at high densities and strongly reduce the $ρ_{t}$ and $P_{t}$ in neutron stars, demonstrating that the widely used empirical parabolic approximation may cause large errors in determining the $x_{p}$ at high densities as well as the $ρ_{t}$ and $P_{t}$ in neutron stars within the nonlinear relativistic mean field model, consistent with previous nonrelativistic calculations.

Single-nucleon potential decomposition of the nuclear symmetry energy

The nuclear symmetry energy $E_{sym}(ρ)$ and its density slope $L(ρ)$ can be decomposed analytically in terms of the single-nucleon potential in isospin asymmetric nuclear matter. Using three popular nuclear effective interaction models which have been extensively used in nuclear structure and reaction studies, namely, the isospin and momentum dependent MDI interaction model, the Skyrme Hartree-Fock approach and the Gogny Hartree-Fock approach, we analyze the contribution of different terms in the single-nucleon potential to the $E_{sym}(ρ)$ and $L(ρ)$. Our results show that the observed different density behaviors of $E_{sym}(ρ)$ for different interactions are essentially due to the variation of the symmetry potential $U_{sym,1}(ρ,k)$. Furthermore, we find that the contribution of the second-order symmetry potential $U_{sym,2}(ρ,k)$ to the $L(ρ)$ generally cannot be neglected. Moreover, our results demonstrate that the magnitude of the $U_{sym,2}(ρ,k)$ is generally comparable with that of $U_{sym,1}(ρ,k)$, indicating the second-order symmetry potential $U_{sym,2}(ρ,k)$ may have significant corrections to the widely used Lane approximation to the single-nucleon potential in extremely neutron(proton)-rich nuclear matter.

Effects of the U-boson on the inner edge of neutron star crusts

We explore effects of the light vector $U$-boson, which is weakly coupled to nucleons, on the transition density $ρ_{t}$ and pressure $P_{t}$ at the inner edge separating the liquid core from the solid crust of neutron stars. Three methods, i.e., the thermodynamical approach, the curvature matrix approach and the Vlasov equation approach are used to determine the transition density $ρ_{t}$ with the Skyrme effective nucleon-nucleon interactions. We find that the $ρ_{t}$ and $P_{t}$ depend on not only the ratio of coupling strength to mass squared of the $U$-boson $g^{2}/μ^{2}$ but also its mass $μ$ due to the finite range interaction from the $U$-boson exchange. In particular, our results indicate that the $ρ_{t}$ and $P_{t}$ are sensitive to both $g^{2}/μ^{2}$ and $μ$ if the $U$-boson mass $μ$ is larger than about 2 MeV. Furthermore, we show that both $g^{2}/μ^{2}$ and $μ$ can have significant influence on the mass-radius relation and the crustal fraction of total moment of inertia of neutron stars. In addition, we study the exchange term contribution of the $U$-boson based on the density matrix expansion method, and demonstrate that the exchange term effects on the nuclear matter equation of state as well as the $ρ_{t}$ and $P_{t}$ are generally negligible.

Effects of hadronic potentials on elliptic flows in relativistic heavy ion collisions

Within the framework of a multiphase transport (AMPT) model that includes both initial partonic and final hadronic interactions, we show that including mean-field potentials in the hadronic phase leads to a splitting of the elliptic flows of particles and their antiparticles, providing thus a plausible explanation of the different elliptic flows between $p$ and ${\bar p}$, $K^+$ and $K^-$, and $π^+$ and $π^-$ observed in recent Beam Energy Scan (BES) program at the Relativistic Heavy-Ion Collider (RHIC).

Correlations between the nuclear breathing mode energy and properties of asymmetric nuclear matter

Based on microscopic Hartree-Fock + random phase approximation calculations with Skyrme interactions, we study the correlations between the nuclear breathing mode energy $E_{ISGMR}$ and properties of asymmetric nuclear matter with a recently developed analysis method. Our results indicate that the $E_{ISGMR}$ of $^{208}$Pb exhibits moderate correlations with the density slope $L$ of the symmetry energy and the isoscalar nucleon effective mass $m_{s,0}^{\ast}$ besides a strong dependence on the incompressibility $K_{0}$ of symmetric nuclear matter. Using the present empirical values of $L=60\pm 30$ MeV and $m_{s,0}^{\ast}=(0.8\pm 0.1)m$, we obtain a theoretical uncertainty of about $\pm 16$ MeV for the extraction of $K_{0}$ from the $E_{ISGMR}$ of $^{208}$Pb. Furthermore, we find the $E_{ISGMR}$ difference between $^{100}$Sn and $^{132}$Sn strongly correlates with $L$ and thus provides a potentially useful probe of the symmetry energy.

Isospin dependent global neutron-nucleus optical model potential

In this paper, we construct a new phenomenological isospin dependent global neutron-nucleus optical model potential. Based on the existing experimental data of elastic scattering angular distributions for neutron as projectile, we obtain a set of the isospin dependent global neutron-nucleus optical model potential parameters, which can basically reproduce the experimental data for target nuclei from $^{24}$Mg to $^{242}$Pu with the energy region up to 200 MeV.

Higher order bulk characteristic parameters of asymmetric nuclear matter

The bulk parameters characterizing the energy of symmetric nuclear matter and the symmetry energy defined at normal nuclear density $ρ_0 $ provide important information on the equation of state (EOS) of isospin asymmetric nuclear matter. While significant progress has been made in determining some lower order bulk characteristic parameters, such as the energy $E_0(ρ_0)$ and incompressibility $K_0$ of symmetric nuclear matter as well as the symmetry energy $E_{sym}(ρ_0)$ and its slope parameter $L$, yet the higher order bulk characteristic parameters are still poorly known. Here, we analyze the correlations between the lower and higher order bulk characteristic parameters within the framework of Skyrme Hartree-Fock energy density functional and then estimate the values of some higher order bulk characteristic parameters. In particular, we obtain $J_0=-355 \pm 95$ MeV and $I_0=1473 \pm 680$ MeV for the third-order and fourth-order derivative parameters of symmetric nuclear matter at $ρ_0 $ and $K_{sym} = -100 \pm 165$ MeV, $J_{sym} = 224 \pm 385$ MeV, $I_{sym} = -1309 \pm 2025$ MeV for the curvature parameter, third-order and fourth-order derivative parameters of the symmetry energy at $ρ_0 $, using the empirical constraints on $E_0(ρ_0)$, $K_0$, $E_{sym}(ρ_0)$, $L$, and the isoscalar and isovector nucleon effective masses. Furthermore, our results indicate that the three parameters $E_0(ρ_0)$, $K_0$, and $J_0$ can reasonably characterize the EOS of symmetric nuclear matter up to $2ρ_0 $ while the symmetry energy up to $2ρ_0 $ can be well described by $E_{sym}(ρ_0)$, $L$, and $K_{sym}$.

Constraining the symmetry energy from the neutron skin thickness of Tin isotopes

We show in the Skyrme-Hartree-Fock approach that unambiguous correlations exist between observables of finite nuclei and nuclear matter properties. Using this correlation analysis to existing data on the neutron skin thickness of Sn isotopes, we find important constraints on the value E_{sym}(rho_0) and density slope L of the nuclear symmetry energy at saturation density. Combining these constraints with those from recent analyses of isospin diffusion and double neutron/proton ratio in heavy ion collisions leads to a value of L=58\pm 18 MeV approximately independent of E_{sym}(ρ_0).

Imprints of Nuclear Symmetry Energy on Properties of Neutron Stars

Significant progress has been made in recent years in constraining the density dependence of nuclear symmetry energy using terrestrial nuclear laboratory data. Around and below the nuclear matter saturation density, the experimental constraints start to merge in a relatively narrow region. At supra-saturation densities, there are, however, still large uncertainties. After summarizing the latest experimental constraints on the density dependence of nuclear symmetry energy, we highlight a few recent studies examining imprints of nuclear symmetry energy on the binding energy, energy release during hadron-quark phase transitions as well as the $w$-mode frequency and damping time of gravitational wave emission of neutron stars.

Nuclear matter symmetry energy and the symmetry energy coefficient in the mass formula

Within the Skyrme-Hartree-Fock (SHF) approach, we show that for a fixed mass number A, both the symmetry energy coefficient a_{sym}(A) in the semi-empirical mass formula and the nuclear matter symmetry energy E_{sym}(ρ_A) at a subsaturation reference density rho_A can be determined essentially by the symmetry energy E_{sym}(rho_0) and its density slope L at saturation density rho_0. Meanwhile, we find the dependence of a_{sym}(A) on E_{sym}(rho_0) or L is approximately linear and is very similar to the corresponding linear dependence displayed by E_{sym}(ρ_A), providing an explanation for the relation E_{sym}(ρ_A) \approx a_{sym}(A). Our results indicate that a value of E_{sym}(ρ_A) leads to a linear correlation between E_{sym}(rho_0) and L and thus can put important constraints on E_{sym}(rho_0) and L. Particularly, the values of E_{sym}(rho_0)= 30.5 +- 3 MeV and L= 52.5 +- 20 MeV are simultaneously obtained by combining the constraints from recently extracted E_{sym}(ρ_A=0.1 fm^{-3}) with those from recent analyses of neutron skin thickness of Sn isotopes in the same SHF approach.

Transport Model Studies of the Baryon-Rich Quark-Gluon Plasma formed in Heavy Ion Collisions

Heavy ion collisions in the low energy run at Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) and future Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research (FAIR) in Germany are expected to produce a quark-gluon plasma that has a finite baryon chemical potential, allowing thus the possibility to study the location of the critical endpoint in the QCD phase diagram. In this talk, using a multiphase transport model, that includes interactions in both initial partonic and final hadronic matters and the transition between these two phases of matter, we discuss the effects of partonic interactions on observables such as the elliptic flow that have played essential roles in studying the properties of the net baryon free quark-gluon plasma produced in heavy ion collisions at higher energies at RHIC. Also, we study the effect of density fluctuations due to a first-order transition between the quark-gluon plasma and hadronic matter on fluctuations of hadron mean transverse momentum and produced deuteron number as well as on two-pion correlations. We further discuss the possibility of studying the mechanism of charm energy loss in the baryon-rich quark-gluon plasma and the properties of phi mesons in hot-dense matter produced in these collisions.

Can the maximum mass of neutron stars rule out any equation of state of dense stellar matter before gravity is well understood?

Probably No! As an example, using soft EOSs consistent with existing terrestrial nuclear laboratory experiments for hybrid neutron stars containing a quark core described with MIT bag model using reasonable parameters, we show that the recently discovered new holder of neutron star maximum mass PSR J1614-2230 of $1.97\pm0.04M_{\odot}$ can be well described by incorporating a Yukawa gravitational correction that is consistent with existing constraints from neutron-proton and neutron-lead scatterings as well as the spectroscopy of antiproton atoms.

Density slope of the nuclear symmetry energy from the neutron skin thickness of heavy nuclei

Expressing explicitly the parameters of the standard Skyrme interaction in terms of the macroscopic properties of asymmetric nuclear matter, we show in the Skyrme-Hartree-Fock approach that unambiguous correlations exist between observables of finite nuclei and nuclear matter properties. We find that existing data on neutron skin thickness $Δr_{np}$ of Sn isotopes give an important constraint on the symmetry energy $E_{sym}({ρ_{0}})$ and its density slope $L$ at saturation density ${ρ_{0}}$. Combining these constraints with those from recent analyses of isospin diffusion and double neutron/proton ratio in heavy-ion collisions at intermediate energies leads to a more stringent limit on $L$ approximately independent of $E_{sym}({ρ_{0}})$. The implication of these new constraints on the $Δr_{np}$ of $^{208}$Pb as well as the core-crust transition density and pressure in neutron stars is discussed.

Nuclear symmetry energy and its density slope at normal density extracted from global nucleon optical potentials

Based on the Hugenholtz-Van Hove theorem, it is shown that both the symmetry energy E$_{sym}(ρ)$ and its density slope $L(ρ)$ at normal density $ρ_0$ are completely determined by the global nucleon optical potentials that can be extracted directly from nucleon-nucleus scatterings, (p,n) charge exchange reactions and single-particle energy levels of bound states. Adopting a value of $m^*/m=0.7$ for the nucleon effective k-mass in symmetric nuclear matter at $ρ_0$ and averaging all phenomenological isovector nucleon potentials constrained by world data available in the literature since 1969, the best estimates of $E_{sym}(ρ_0)=31.3$ MeV and $L(ρ_0)=52.7$ MeV are simultaneously obtained. Uncertainties involved in the estimates are discussed.

Isospin- and momentum-dependent effective interactions for the baryon octet and the properties of hybrid stars

The isospin- and momentum-dependent MDI interaction, which has been extensively used in intermediate-energy heavy-ion reactions to study the properties of asymmetric nuclear matter, is extended to include the nucleon-hyperon and hyperon-hyperon interactions by assuming same density, momentum and isospin dependence as for the nucleon-nucleon interaction. The parameters in these interactions are determined from the empirical hyperon single-particle potentials in symmetric nuclear matter at saturation density. The extended MDI interaction is then used to study in the mean-field approximation the equation of state of hypernuclear matter and also the properties of hybrid stars by including the phase transition from the hypernuclear matter to the quark matter at high densities. In particular, the effects of attractive and repulsive $Σ$N interactions and different values of symmetry energies on the hybrid star properties are investigated.
