A Spectral Localization Method for Time-Fractional Integro-Differential Equations with Nonsmooth Data

In this work, we develop a localized numerical scheme with low regularity requirements for solving time-fractional integro-differential equations. First, a fully discrete numerical scheme is constructed. Specifically, for temporal discretization, we employ the contour integral method (CIM) with parameterized hyperbolic contours to approximate the nonlocal operators. For spatial discretization, the standard piecewise linear Galerkin finite element method (FEM) is used. We then provide a rigorous error analysis, demonstrating that the proposed scheme achieves high accuracy even for problems with nonsmooth/vanishing initial values or low-regularity solutions, featuring spectral accuracy in time and second-order convergence in space. Finally, a series of numerical experiments in both 1-D and 2-D validate the theoretical findings and confirm that the algorithm combines the advantages of spectral accuracy, low computational cost, and efficient memory usage.

Implicit-explicit time discretization schemes for a class of semilinear wave equations with nonautonomous dampings

This paper is concerned about the implicit-explicit (IMEX) methods for a class of dissipative wave systems with time-varying velocity feedbacks and nonlinear potential energies, equipped with different boundary conditions. Firstly, we approximate the problems by using a vanilla IMEX method, which is a second-order scheme for the problems when the damping terms are time-independent. However, rigors analysis shows that the error rate declines from second to first order due to the nonautonomous dampings. To recover the convergence order, we propose a revised IMEX scheme and apply it to the nonautonomous wave equations with a kinetic boundary condition. Our numerical experiments demonstrate that the revised scheme can not only achieve second-order accuracy but also improve the computational efficiency.

The Contour integral method for Feynman-Kac equation with two internal states

We develop the contour integral method for numerically solving the Feynman-Kac equation with two internal states [P. B. Xu and W. H. Deng, Math. Model. Nat. Phenom., 13 (2018), 10], describing the functional distribution of particle's internal states. The striking benefits are obtained, including spectral accuracy, low computational complexity, small memory requirement, etc. We perform the error estimates and stability analyses, which are confirmed by numerical experiments.

Analyses of the contour integral method for time fractional subdiffusion-normal transport equation

In this work, we theoretically and numerically discuss the time fractional subdiffusion-normal transport equation, which depicts a crossover from sub-diffusion (as $t\rightarrow 0$) to normal diffusion (as $t\rightarrow \infty$). Firstly, the well-posedness and regularities of the model are studied by using the bivariate Mittag-Leffler function. Theoretical results show that after introducing the first-order derivative operator, the regularity of the solution can be improved in substance. Then, a numerical scheme with high-precision is developed no matter the initial value is smooth or non-smooth. More specifically, we use the contour integral method (CIM) with parameterized hyperbolic contour to approximate the temporal local and non-local operators, and employ the standard Galerkin finite element method for spacial discretization. Rigorous error estimates show that the proposed numerical scheme has spectral accuracy in time and optimal convergence order in space. Besides, we further improve the algorithm and reduce the computational cost by using the barycentric Lagrange interpolation. Finally, the obtained theoretical results as well as the acceleration algorithm are verified by several 1-D and 2-D numerical experiments, which also show that the numerical scheme developed in this paper is effective and robust.

Stability for nonlinear wave motions damped by time-dependent frictions

We are concerned with the dynamical behavior of solutions to semilinear wave systems with time-varying damping and nonconvex force potential. Our result shows that the dynamical behavior of solution is asymptotically stable without any bifurcation and chaos. And it is a sharp condition on the damping coefficient for the solution to converge to some equilibrium. To illustrate our theoretical results, we provide some numerical simulations for dissipative sine-Gordon equation and dissipative Klein-Gordon equation.

DEMC: A Deep Dual-Encoder Network for Denoising Monte Carlo Rendering

In this paper, we present DEMC, a deep Dual-Encoder network to remove Monte Carlo noise efficiently while preserving details. Denoising Monte Carlo rendering is different from natural image denoising since inexpensive by-products (feature buffers) can be extracted in the rendering stage. Most of them are noise-free and can provide sufficient details for image reconstruction. However, these feature buffers also contain redundant information, which makes Monte Carlo denoising different from natural image denoising. Hence, the main challenge of this topic is how to extract useful information and reconstruct clean images. To address this problem, we propose a novel network structure, Dual-Encoder network with a feature fusion sub-network, to fuse feature buffers firstly, then encode the fused feature buffers and a noisy image simultaneously, and finally reconstruct a clean image by a decoder network. Compared with the state-of-the-art methods, our model is more robust on a wide range of scenes and is able to generate satisfactory results in a significantly faster way.

Characterization of Image Spaces of Riemann-Liouville Fractional Integral Operators on Sobolev Spaces $W^{m,p}(Ω)$

Fractional operators are widely used in mathematical models describing abnormal and nonlocal phenomena. Although there are extensive numerical methods for solving the corresponding model problems, theoretical analysis such as the regularity result, or the relationship between the left-side and right-side fractional operators are seldom mentioned. In stead of considering the fractional derivative spaces, this paper starts from discussing the image spaces of Riemann-Liouville fractional integrals of $L_p(Ω)$ functions, since the fractional derivative operators that often used are all pseudo-differential. Then high regularity situation---the image spaces of Riemann-Liouville fractional integral operators on $W^{m,p}(Ω)$ space are considered. Equivalent characterizations of the defined spaces, as well as of the intersection of the left-side and right-side spaces are given. The behavior of the functions in the defined spaces at both the nearby boundary point/ponits and the points in the domain are demonstrated in a clear way. Besides, tempered fractional operators show to be reciprocal to the corresponding Riemann-Liouville fractional operators, which is expected to make some efforts on theoretical support for relevant numerical methods. Last, we also provide some instructions on how to take advantage of the introduced spaces when numerically solving fractional equations.

Well-Conditioned Galerkin Spectral Method for Two-Sided Fractional Diffusion Equation with Drift

In this paper, we focus on designing a well-conditioned Glarkin spectral methods for solving a two-sided fractional diffusion equations with drift, in which the fractional operators are defined neither in Riemann-Liouville nor Caputo sense, and its physical meaning is clear. Based on the image spaces of Riemann-Liouville fractional integral operators on $L_p([a,b])$ space discussed in our previous work, after a step by step deduction, three kinds of Galerkin spectral formulations are proposed, the final obtained corresponding scheme of which shows to be well-conditioned---the condition number of the stiff matrix can be reduced from $O(N^{2α})$ to $O(N^α)$, where $N$ is the degree of the polynomials used in the approximation. Another point is that the obtained schemes can also be applied successfully to approximate fractional Laplacian with generalized homogeneous boundary conditions, whose fractional order $α\in(0,2)$, not only having to be limited to $α\in(1,2)$. Several numerical experiments demonstrate the effectiveness of the derived schemes. Besides, based on the numerical results, we can observe the behavior of mean first exit time, an interesting quantity that can provide us with a further understanding about the mechanism of abnormal diffusion.

Fast predictor-corrector approach for the tempered fractional ordinary differential equations

The tempered evolution equation describes the trapped dynamics, widely appearing in nature, e.g., the motion of living particles in viscous liquid. This paper proposes the fast predictor-corrector approach for the tempered fractional ordinary differential equations by digging out the potential 'very' short memory principle. The algorithms basing on the idea of equidistributing are detailedly described; their effectiveness and low computation cost, being linearly increasing with time $t$, are numerically demonstrated.

Well-posedness and numerical algorithm for the tempered fractional ordinary differential equations

Trapped dynamics widely appears in nature, e.g., the motion of particles in viscous cytoplasm. The famous continuous time random walk (CTRW) model with power law waiting time distribution ({\em having diverging first moment}) describes this phenomenon. Because of the finite lifetime of biological particles, sometimes it is necessary to temper the power law measure such that the waiting time measure has convergent first moment. Then the time operator of the Fokker-Planck equation corresponding to the CTRW model with tempered waiting time measure is the so-called tempered fractional derivative. This paper focus on discussing the properties of the time tempered fractional derivative, and studying the well-posedness and the Jacobi-predictor-corrector algorithm for the tempered fractional ordinary differential equation. By adjusting the parameter of the proposed algorithm, any desired convergence order can be obtained and the computational cost linearly increases with time. And the effectiveness of the algorithm is numerically confirmed.

High Order Finite Difference Methods on Non-uniform Meshes for Space Fractional Operators

In the past decades, the finite difference methods for space fractional operators develop rapidly; to the best of our knowledge, all the existing finite difference schemes, including the first and high order ones, just work on uniform meshes. The nonlocal property of space fractional operator makes it difficult to design the finite difference scheme on non-uniform meshes. This paper provides a basic strategy to derive the first and high order discretization schemes on non-uniform meshes for fractional operators. And the obtained first and second schemes on non-uniform meshes are used to solve space fractional diffusion equations. The error estimates and stability analysis are detailedly performed; and extensive numerical experiments confirm the theoretical analysis or verify the convergence orders.

A Series of High Order Quasi-Compact Schemes for Space Fractional Diffusion Equations Based on the Superconvergent Approximations for Fractional Derivatives

Based on the superconvergent approximation at some point (depending on the fractional order $\alpha$, but not belonging to the mesh points) for Gr\"{u}nwald discretization to fractional derivative, we develop a series of high order quasi-compact schemes for space fractional diffusion equations. Because of the quasi-compactness of the derived schemes, no points beyond the domain are used for all the high order schemes including second order, third order, fourth order, and even higher order schemes; moreover, the algebraic equations for all the high order schemes have the completely same matrix structure. The stability and convergence analysis for some typical schemes are made; the techniques of treating the nonhomogeneous boundary conditions are introduced; and extensive numerical experiments are performed to confirm the theoretical analysis or verify the convergence orders.

Jacobi-Predictor-Corrector Approach for the Fractional Ordinary Differential Equations

We present a novel numerical method, called {\tt Jacobi-predictor-corrector approach}, for the numerical solution of fractional ordinary differential equations based on the polynomial interpolation and the Gauss-Lobatto quadrature w.r.t. the Jacobi-weight function $\omega(s)=(1-s)^{\alpha-1}(1+s)^0$. This method has the computational cost O(N) and the convergent order $IN$, where $N$ and $IN$ are, respectively, the total computational steps and the number of used interpolating points. The detailed error analysis is performed, and the extensive numerical experiments confirm the theoretical results and show the robustness of this method.
